Marikuna are guardians - Great and mysterious beasts that roam our world in secret. Each one is half of a pair - They spend their lives seeking out a human that is to become their ward. Fiercely loyal, they will guard their partner with their life, should it come to that. It is considered a blessing to encounter these rare and secretive creatures in many parts of the world - Some claim that being chosen as their charge grants magic, immortality, and even godhood. Are you to be chosen by the Marikuna?

The artist competition is up! If you're interested in working for this species, be sure to check it out!

Size:
- Adults can get to about the size of a small horse, and are often ridden by their bonded human for transportation.
- Teens get to be about the size of a large dog, and are usually too small to ride, unless their human is particularly young and lightweight.
- Children and babies tend to be about the same size, with older children getting to about the size of a small dog.
- Despite their mammalian appearance, Marikuna lay eggs, which are about the size of two-thirds of a loaf of bread from the store.
Aging:
Marikuna have rather odd aging patterns, with no preset periods between one stage and another, though there tends to be at least a month between each stage. There have been no reports of Marikuna dying of old age, suggesting immortality in regards to that aspect, or, at the very least, a long life expectancy. Eggs tend to take between one and two weeks to hatch, though it's not unheard of for generally healthy pups to hatch earlier or later, though there may be complications should this occur. Occasionally, a genetic mutation may occur that prevents a Marikuna from aging to adulthood, referred to as PPS. There are two kinds of this:
- PPS-1 prevents a Marikuna from growing beyond child stage.
- PPS-2 prevents a Marikuna from growing beyond teen stage.
Please note that these symptoms usually only affect the body's growth - A Marikuna with PPS-1 could have the mind of a fully grown one, depending on their actual age. It's not unheard of for them to maintain the mentality of the stage their body develops to, of course.
Diet:
The Marikuna are omnivorous, capable of eating both meat and plants. Many seem to have a bit of a sweet tooth as well, though too much sugar tends to end with them hyperactive or sick. Please note that, while they are capable to consuming alcohol, they are prone to intoxication, just like humans. We've had some... Issues in the past regarding this, so it's highly recommended that any alcohol is kept out of reach and reserved for special occasions only.
Breeding:
Marikuna are often picky about their choice of mate, as they mate for life. They often go through courtship rituals similar to humans dating, and those bonded with humans sometimes enact ceremonies not unlike human weddings. This has only been seen in those who have spent time around humans, suggesting that it it a learned behavior. Only adults are capable of breeding, making those afflicted with PPS incapable of having blood offspring, though it is not uncommon for those with mates of their own to adopt abandoned pups. Interestingly, mates of the same gender actually are capable of breeding. Nobody's quite sure how this works, of course, and the Marikuna don't seem particularly willing to share exactly how they manage this, so it's likely to remain a mystery.
Communication:
The Marikuna's verbal communication consists mostly of growling, whining, barking, and the occasional roar. They cannot speak human languages verbally, though they can communicate with their human telepathically, and can understand both human speech and writing. They are also capable of communicating with most other animal species.
