Day Zero- Monday, July 1st
Today, my mustang for the big Mustang Makeover event finally arrived back home. Granted, a few nights in a muddy paddock at the penning as well as the long dusty trip back home has left her looking more mudslide than horse! I really want to give her a good brushing and washing, but I don't think she's ready yet. She arrived right after lunch, and after making sure that there wasn't any way she could get out, or hurt herself, I let her straight into the pen from the trailer. The corral I chose has a water trough full of fresh, clean water, and has a pair of trees for shade and shelter. I made sure that none of the wild horses are anywhere near her- only a few older, calmer horses are in the pasture nearby.
I wanted to make it as smooth as possible, so I locked up the dogs in the house. She was still nervous and flighty when we opened up though- she bolted out to canter around the pen a few times. Even after she stopped cantering, she continued to trot for a good quarter hour or so. I knew there would be no touching her today, but still I wanted to stroke that pretty little face of hers and try to console her. Even now she's sort of picking at the hay in the pen, constantly looking around with her nostrils flaring. She's not tall, but most mustangs aren't, but she's got a pretty nice build, or I believe she does under all that mud!
Tomorrow morning I'll start early and after feeding her, try my best to see if she's bold enough to approach me with a fence between us. I need to get that weird rope halter they put on her face for some reason. I'm still pondering a name for her... I think I need to get to know her a little better before I make my final decision on that one.
Well, it's dark now, and I should sleep. The crickets are chirping and the dogs are all curled up inside. Hopefully our new addition gets some rest tonight as well!
