Story: It was a frosty winter's night when the storm came. Rain bucketed down from the black clouds above and lighting dashed across the black sky. Acrylic shivered in the rain, wandering about looking for shelter. Three weeks had passed since her owner had abandoned her, she was running out of grazing, had very little water and no shelter. The appaloosa mare hobbled around on overgrown hooves, unable to move faster than a very slow trot. The mare pinned her ears at the lightning, she was scared.
Remembering the days when she had an owner who loved her, the mare sighed quietly. Her name was Cassie, she was only 11 years old and loved Acrylic with all her heart. But she had a new horse, a horse that wasn't as silly or hyper as Acrylic. Cassie stopped coming to her as much, and barely paid any attention to her when she did come. Acrylic was forgotten. Then as if Acrylic didn't even exist, Cassie moved and left Acrylic behind in a dirty paddock with bad water sources and not even a tree for shelter.
Hearing footsteps, Acrylic turned around. Although she was frightened the poor mare was too weak to run. It was only a young girl, she looked like Cassie! Acrylic whinnied softly, and snorted quietly tossing her head up and down. But it wasn't Cassie. It was a girl kinder than Cassie. Her name was Zaria, and she was going to rescue Acrylic.
The rain stung the girl's eyes like a million bees as she trudged through the mucky paddock. "Shh girly its alright." She whispered as she drew closer to Acrylic. The mare knew it wasn't Cassie, but could already sense the girl was kind. "Hi sweetie." Zaria said quietly, looking closely at the appaloosa's old halter. "Acyrlic Colors? Is that you name sweetie?" The young girl said quietly, she knew horses couldn't reply, but Zaira liked talking to horses.
"Well you've got a big belly haven't you! There's not much grass around here though..." Zaria frowned as she glanced around the wrecked pasture. Mud covered the floor and the fences were old and broken. There was no water or shelter in sight, and poisonous flowers dotted the land. Yet the mare's stomach was huge, and Zaria was unsure how that was possible. Little did she know that a few months ago, Acrylic had been covered by a star appaloosa stallion.
Patting the mare affectionately, Zaria clipped a lead rope onto Acrylic's worn halter and led her out of the mucky paddock. The mare's hooves squelched and sank in the thick mud as they walked, finally Zaria got a nervous Acrylic into a trailer and drove away. She brought Acrylic to a beautiful place, filled with lots of other mares who all had very sad stories behind them. "Welcome home girl." Zaria whispered as she let the mare out into a nice paddock for the first time in weeks.
Acrylic whinnied with joy as she cantered pain free into the lush green pasture. Everywhere other mares and geldings grazed happily beside her and the water was clean and fresh. Each day when Zaria returned from school she would pamper Acrylic, grooming her for hours and giving her treats. The vet had confirmed that Acrylic was in foal and would give birth any day soon.
It was early spring when the day came. Like most the foal was born at night. A beautiful appaloosa colt. Sadly the rescue barn couldn't afford to keep the foal so he had to be sold once weaned, but Acrylic continued to live a wonderful life. Zaria started to ride her! At first the appaloosa acted up, but with a little help from Zaria's trainer the pair were winning ribbons.
