I would say that you are doing just fine but if you want to make it more realistic, there are a few things to keep in mind. A) where is the light coming from? If you look at an object in the sunlight, you'll notice that usually the bottom is darker as well as the opposite side the sun is shining on depending on the shape of it. B) does the object have depth? As you very well know, horses have convex and concave areas. Around the flank, abdomen, and crest area there is obvious depth. Those areas would be a darker shade. From slightly darker to black, it all depends on depth. Opposite to that, where should highlights be? The upper buttocks area, stomach, and shoulder are good examples of areas that have definite highlights. If you need a reference, get one. They can really help you stay on track.
