Wolves are among our country’s most iconic wild species, but for years they have been targeted with brutal and deadly harassment.
Since the near extermination of wolves from the American West in the last century, the government has spent millions of dollars to successfully return wolves to the region. But now, federal officials have turned wolf management in Wyoming over to state officials implementing a state law that establishes an eradication policy for wolves throughout most of Wyoming.
We had hoped it wouldn’t come to this. Independent scientists say that 2,000 to 3,000 wolves are needed for a sustainable, fully recovered population. But now Wyoming is set to join Montana and Idaho in implementing policies that are designed to drive the region’s wolf population well below that level.
