Well, first you cover the layer in a really dark red / orange or grey, or black. Then select a yellowy orange airbrush with a high opacity, do the basic shape of the fire. Then use the blender tool to sharpen the ends and add a few extra sparks around the big fire. Use the dodge tool in a few seperate areas to add some extra brightness, its all in one layer.
