"Open it up," the shinigami said, and Ryuga opened it up to the front page, and I walked behind him, reading it over his shoulder.
1. The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
2. This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
3. If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
4. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
5. After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
"How do we know this is real? You can't just kill someone by writing their name down in a book!" I exclaimed, which caused a few people around us to stop and stare, so I lowered my voice. "Who can see you?"
"Only you two. Actually, it should only be one of you, but I guess that both of you have ownership of the Death Note now."
"Ownership? What does that mean? What do we do now?"
"Whatever you want, really."

"Hmm." He thought for a moment. "Only one way to find out." He got a pen. He thought of a name to write down, and started writing it, but stopped before the pen even touched the paper. "Isn't it murder if I write a name down?" He wondered aloud.

"If the person actually dies, of course it's murder. But we need to figure out if they actually die or not," I said, taking the pen and notebook out of his hands, turning to watch a man run through the park, a woman's purse in his arms, and I recognized him as a classmate of mine. I took the cap off the pen and started to write.
"Lelouch... Lamperlouge," I muttered as I wrote, then snapped the notebook shut and watched the man carefully.
"Now you wait forty seconds."

L waited patiently. This was the longest few seconds of his life. He saw the boy have a heart attack 40 seconds later. "How is that even possible?" He looked at the book.

"Did I just kill someone?" I muttered, looking down at the book. Oh, the things I could do with this book. I could cleanse the world, get rid of the people that don't deserve to live. It didn't take long for me pop open the book and start to recall the names of recent convicts.

It wasn't long until I felt a hand clamp down around my wrist, and the pen fell, dragging me back into the world, away from the power of the notebook.

[Hm? I didn't reply to L's comment, just muttered under my breath. I think I'll have Ryuk explain it later once we get out the fact that L won't let Light kill people.]

L took the book from Light's hands. "I'm taking this back to the lab with me." He started walking there. But before he left, he told Light he could come if he wanted. He then continued to walk until he got to the building.

I ran after the man, shinigami floating behind me, and as he neared a building, I set a hand on his shoulder and stopped him.
"What are you doing? You can't just take it!" I exclaimed. "It belongs to both of us right, shinigami?"
"Name's Ryuk. And yeah, both of you have ownership over the Death Note."
As he kept on walking, undisturbed by me, I trailed him inside, following him, making sure that he didn't get out of my sight.
"And how do I know that you wouldn't do the same as me?"

With a sigh, L got handcuffs out of his pocket. "We can handcuff ourselves together if you feel you can't trust me." He offered, still holding the book with his two fingers in the other hand. "If not, we can just take turns holding the death note." L added.
