Primarily because he is extremely manipulative and a relationship with someone who shared those traits would almost certainly be abusive. It sort of creeps me out that people are drawn to people who are that manipulative, even when that person has made their true colors absolutely clear.
I guess I'm just speaking as someone who has seen abuse and is now very aware of it...But still...
[Riff]To respond to both this as well as nerd.'s question about our feelings towards Negan, from what I've seen, fans are often (though not always) polarized in their opinion of him depending on whether or not they've read the comics. I personally really
love Negan--like he is probably my favorite character in the comics--but then, that's because I read the comics and got to know that version of him before we saw too much of him in the show.
While I think JDM is pretty much the perfect Negan, and I'm having a great time with the slightly over-the-top, animated quality he's bringing to the character, the writing is what's bothering me a bit. In the comics at least, Negan, on several occasions, makes it
very clear that he absolutely detests sexual violence--in fact, he isn't all to fond of violence in general, believe it or not--but in the show, to hear him say that would only make him sound like a hypocrite because of how he manipulated Sherry into becoming one of his wives by threatening her and Dwight. In the comic, though, it was her choice; Negan never threatened her, he only promised that she wouldn't have to ever work if she "married" him, and she willingly chose the easy way out. So Negan was pretty much just Sherry's post-apocalyptic sugar daddy.
I've just been really trying to understand why they would choose to change that about Negan in the TV show when imo having at least some kind of strong moral foundation, no matter how warped it might seem, is one of the things that made Negan a really interesting character in the comics... Only thing I can think is that maybe they wanted to make him seem like more of a jerk, which also doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, because I get the feeling that he's supposed to be a kind of charismatic villain, even if you hate to admit it... So then maybe they wanted to make Dwight more sympathetic, but again, I don't think it's really necessary; I think Dwight already becomes complex and likable enough with time...

Anywho, with that out of the way... I've been really enjoying this season so far, but last night's episode in particular was honestly one of my favorite Walking Dead episodes of all time, probably... I had been really looking forward to seeing Ezekiel and Shiva in the show, and they looked awesome as expected; Khary Payton really delivered... Then it was such a trip seeing the Saviors trying their hardest to break Daryl, and him still remaining defiant despite it all... but wow, last night's episode was so much fun! [
I was so happy that Negan got most of his lines from the comic lol. Then the screentime for Rosita and Father Gabriel was great; they're some of my favorite side characters. Rosita is kind of scaring me, though... I really hope she doesn't do anything too rash... I feel like they might be gearing up to give her Holly's comic arc, so if that ends up happening, I hope she at the very least won't get the same death. On the bright side, though, I think we'll see some nice scenes when she gets Eugene to make her "a bullet"--just one, apparently lmao. ]
