Erze scraped at the bare ground with one of her boots. The air was pleasantly warm, for the tundra. She looked back at her younger sister, Ibaris. "Here it is."

Ibaris looked at the small town. It was not in good shape. A few of the buildings had collapsed and were laying in piles of rubble on the ground. Many doors were missing or broken, and what was left seemed to be old and likely unusable. The exposed hinges were rusty, and the few spots of paint that were left were peeling off. Inside a house that had no door, she saw that weeds and animals had invaded it. The silence was eerie. "This is where the Ancestors sent you?' Ibaris asked, staring at it with a mix of disgust, worry, and confusion.

Erze looked back at her younger sister, saying, "This is what they showed me. If this is where they think we should live, then we should listen to them. It is still summer, so we should have time to rebuild it enough so that we can sleep and be warm." Changing the subject, she said, "Ibaris, you were always good at healing. Would you be the shaman for the village?"

Ibaris nodded, still looking at the broken city. Her gaze swung around to the flat landscape surrounding them. "Expanse," she said in a whisper.

"What did you say?" Erze asked her. The Head Chief was already looking into the buildings that were in decent shape.

"Expanse. That's what we should call our village. Expanse."

Sultan smiled at his wife as she sat with the new nurse, Endana. She seemed nice enough, she was at least calming Halisi a little as she worried about the baby.
"Caaalm. You're not holding the village on your back, you can go without hunting." Endana cooed. Halisi, however, wasn't going to have it.
"Chanua is distracted! I don't know what to do with her, I'd be taking Mshindi if it wasn't for this baby, but all she wants to do is mess with Ayo!" The hunting chief ranted, obviously steaming.
"Well, looks like Endana'll be dealing with another lady soon." Sultan remarked, smiling at his joke. However, he got a silencing glare from Halisi. 'Too soon?'
"You say that the spirits brought me to you? And Mshindi?" She questioned, glancing at him questingly.
Sultan nodded, getting a small grin. "Yes, my father is the only ancestor right now, but he provides what he can." Sultan said, sending a small thanks to his father in his head.
"Get them to bring me more hunters! If you're right about Chanua and Ayo, then that'll only leave Mshindi to hunt. That won't do." She demanded, staring him down.
'She has a point.' "I'll see what I can do." Sultan leaned over and landed a kiss on his wife's large belly, leaving for the spiritual hut. He saw many totems scattered across the area, his eyes landing on his own family's. A dirty Dollie for Dalila and an Arowana tooth for Halisi. 'And soon there'll be our child's.' He thought with a smile. Sultan was about to kneel and send his prayers when Mshindi and Dalila darted right now with loud laughter.
"You're it, Mshie!" The little girl shouted, slamming right into Sultan's back. "OH! Brother, I'm sorry!!" She yelled, roughly patting his back where she hit.
"What is this place?" Mshindi questioned, glancing around in wonder.
"You haven't been properly shown around, it's the Ancestor's hut." Sultan told him. "A respectful and quiet place to show your love for those who died." He added.
"Would my momma be here?" The boy questioned, his one eye sparkling from what Sultan could tell.
"I don't see why not, she'd follow you to Raven's Brigade." He said. "Want to pray with me?" The chief offered, smiling to the both of them.
Mshindi quickly nodded, both him and Dalila kneeling with him obediently. Dalila was squirming around, but Sultan didn't say much. "Ancestors, please take care of Mshindi's mother on her journey to Raven Brigade. May she rest in her afterlife." Dalila hugged the boy as he started to cry a bit, ignoring her own prayer. "And may you bring us someone to help provide for the living before times get tough in the winter." He asked, getting up.
"I have to go out with Chanua..." Mshindi said, getting up for his patrol. 'He's a good boy, hopefully he'll be good for Dalila too.' He thought as his little sister followed close behind him with a joyful skip.
Sultan stepped out of the Ancestor's hut, looking at the patrols leaving. He couldn't help noticing Ayo giving Chanua a long, loving kiss before they both left for their own patrols. 'Yeah, we were right about those two... A hunter will be needed.'

Then
Seanni was flabbergasted. "You have what?" she asked, for what must have been the fifth time.

"A dragon egg," said Waxinnan, a flirty man who claimed to be a Harper, with a grin. "A bone fide bronze egg."

"How do you even know it's a bronze?"

"Darlin', when you work at a weyr like me," Waxinnan drawled, "you get to know the difference between a metallic and non-metallic."

Seanni bristled. "I'm not your darling," she hissed. "I'm Weyrwoman Seanni of Black Rock Weyr."

"Woah, there, Weyrwoman," said Boldosh, a former Fishercrafter. "We don't mean no harm. See, we were just passin' through the territory, looking for some place to settle for the night. And if you have a weyr..."

Seanni grinned. "You asking to join?"

Boldosh nodded, exchanging a look of excitement with his three companions. "If you're willin' to have us."

"Of course I am!" she exclaimed. "Always. But Wax," she said with a glare, "I will never be your darling."

Waxinnan put his hands up into the air in a gesture of resignation. "Alright, alright," he said. "And we'll be giving the egg to you. Best it's placed in the care of a weyr than with one of us."

Seanni laughed. "C'mon. Rosanth could probably fit you all."

***
Nebereg knew it was time. He was wearing the traditional white clothes provided to all candidates at a Hatching Day, and was standing on the warm grounds of the weyr. They had decided to convert a small section into a hatching ground, where all abandoned or otherwise found eggs could be hatched, while weyrborn dragons would be hatched outside, where their mothers could care for them. Rosanth hummed outside, a deep sound that vibrated through the ground. As the human inhabitants held their breath, the large egg wobbled. Wobbled. Cracked. Eggshell dropped onto the ground as the hatchling inside struggled for freedom. And then...

A bronze head poked out of the shell, chirping nervously. He looked around, pausing for a moment as his gaze settled on Borrin. The farmer looked alarmed and started waving his hands and the hatchling swung his head away. Nebereg's heart started again, as it became clear that the hatchling wouldn't choose Borrin. No. The hatchling chose Nebereg.

My name's Predath, said the baby bronze dragon, looking up at Nebereg. And I'm hungry.

It was the most glorious day of N'reg's life.

***
Half a turn later, Predath was perched on top of a nearby hill, with N'reg sitting astride. Seanni and Rosanth were beside them, and N'reg was again reminded at how long it would take for Predath to reach his full growth. While he had stopped doing nothing but eating and sleeping after his fourth month, the bronze still ate every other day and was growing just as quickly.

"Is Predath ready?" asked Seanni.

Are you? asked N'reg. This was going to be their first flight together, and he could hardly wait. Supposedly, dragons and their riders used to wait until the dragon was a year old before they could fly together. Since the Final Pass, the age had steadily declined until six months for golds, bronzes, and browns, when most of them had reached a large enough size to fly with their riders while blues and greens had to wait the full year as they were smaller.

Yes, replied Predath. I'm ready to fly!

"He's ready," said N'reg out loud to Seanni, excitement clear in his voice.

"Then let's fly!" Seanni's arm dropped in the traditional signal and the dragons sprang into the air.

Now
in weyr

***
Predath beat his wings, trying to catch up to Rosanth. The slightly older gold slowed down, privately amused at the younger bronze’s attempts to impress her. Perhaps she would allow him to catch her for her first mating flight. She sometimes wondered what it would be like. She had heard—and seen—from Seanni that mating flights were chaotic yet wonderful, full of unbridled passion. And of course, she would have to pick the right mate. As there was only one other male dragon in the weyr—Predath—he would have to be her mate unless another male came.

***
"It's a very well-made ship," commented Boldosh.

Jesni beamed. "Thank you!" she said. "We bought it a few turns back and it's worked wonderfully since."

Baridna peered over the sides, waving her hands at a shadowy shape below the waters. "It's so wonderfully calm out here," she said with a delighted sigh. "If it were like this all the time, I would have changed my Craft!"

Jesni and Boldosh laughed together. "Storms can be pretty nasty," said Boldosh.

"And learning which kinds of fish live around the weyr was quite the experience," added Jesni. "I must have caught a thousand (poisonous fish)! Thankfully, there are dolphins everywhere here so they showed me the best places to fish."

"They do that?" asked Baridna curiously.

Jesni nodded. "They’re super smart. They even know when a human’s pregnant! Remember the stories about Mirram of the Final Pass? She found out that she was pregnant when a dolphin told her, and the dolphins have helped so many other dragonriders when they wanted to have children."

"How come?" This time it was Boldosh, who waved his hand at Jesni to continue explaining.

"Well, a short ride between is quite effective at avoiding pregnancy." This was all Jesni would say, as the topic was quite uncomfortable to speak of. So many accidents happened when a female rider didn’t realize she was pregnant and continued her duties on dragonback.

Boldosh and Baridna nodded in understanding.

***
"I should be back with the corn," Borrin grumbled.

"It's going to be fine," Ershar said reassuringly. "A day of gathering won't do too much."

"But what about the bovines?"

"They won't eat it. That fence of yours is secure enough."

"And," added Renolla, "none of your grumbling will help us get more food." Ershar snickered and Borrin sighed.

[ 000. hollow grove | intro ]

Postby d o e » Sat Feb 03, 2018 8:19 pm

          Image

          ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

A thick, treacherous tangle of woods is the home to a new generation of elves. Deep in the forest is the beginning of a new settlement, broken off from a larger homeland. Although small now, the village promises to blossom into a citadel. Homes are carved out of the grandest trees, hundreds of intricate nooks settled in it's trunk. The tallest of them all is the castle, where the high matriarch or patriarch will live and take court.

An hour's trek away leads to the life pool, a sacred place for the elves of this forest. The water is purified and watched over by the Moonheir. Although the life pool is mostly used for healing and blessed rituals, occasionally a festival will be held for the birth of child or other grand event.

Deeper into the forest lays the Emerald Deeproot. This is an even greater place of worship, where only the high matriarch/patriach are allowed to go. A day's journey through the harshest part of the woods, it is forbidden for anyone else to go, except for the current Moonheir. This is where the patriarch speaks to the heart of their forest, meditating and becoming one with their homeland. It is thought to bring great luck and blessings, as well as fulfill several of the kingdom's needs. This often takes many days, in which the patriarch's spouse or heir will sit the throne for them.

The elves of Hollow Grove are a prideful people, who believe themselves to be very in tune with the environment around them. Among themselves, they are kind and gracious, but don't look very kindly upon outsiders to their group. Alliances are forged under great trust and shared interest, rarely upon resources. To dishonor them or their culture is considered a great insult and many wars have been started under a perceived slight to their race.

Although they dislike most other races, occasionally they will allow someone of a different race to join their ranks. This usually happens only after said race has proven their worth, sometimes in the form of a gift or service. The following races are those that could potentially be found in Hollow Grove.

          ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Elves. Very Common. The main residences of Hollow Grove. They are just as varied as humans, with their distinct features being their pointed ears and additional skin tones. Elves with tones of colored skin (pink, green, blue, etc.) are considered blessed and thought to be more susceptible to magic - the odd colors are not always inherited and may come from nowhere. Life expectancy is 80-100 years.

Centaur. Uncommon. Sharing a home with the elves, they get along rather nicely with them. Their eagerness to fight make them great allies and it isn't uncommon that they seek to join the tribe. Life expectancy is 50-60 years.

Hybrid Centaurs. Rare. Similar to their equine cousins, though these centaurs share genetics with other animals; felines, canines, griffins. They dislike being seen by others and prefer to be alone. Life expectancy is 70-80 years.

Satyrs. Uncommon. Mystical, whimsical spirits of the forest. Satyrs are commonly seen as pranksters and bards, an a bit immature. They are more in tune to nature than most other races, however, which make them a precious ally for the elves. Life expectancy is 70 years.

Sirens. Very Rare. Conniving and manipulative, sirens are considered bad luck to everyone in the forest. Although rare, they will sometimes appear in the life pool, luring the elves to the water. However, they are valuable as they can traverse the waters past the forest and return with precious treasures. Life expectancy is 120-150 years.

Season: Spring (Sorry, skipping winter this time)
Weather: Spring, the time of prosperity. Food will be in abundance, both prey and plants. There is an increase in nomadic groups as well, some do not come in peace.

Sprung up around the edges of a fertile oasis, the desert city of Nancledra is a quiet place where it's inhabitants mind their own business. All sorts of races make their home here, just so as long as they are accustomed to the sweltering sun and the wind that so often chases it's own tail aimlessly over the dunes. The citizens go about their days, fishing and growing what crops they can;
they also look after the those that've escaped from war-torn cities and towns until it's safe for them to return to their homes. They often trade with other places but seldom make allies or enemies for the fear of getting involved in a needless war, and losing. The city of Nancledra lives off a diet of cactus juice, lizards, birds, fish, bread, fruit and rice; they have many cultures such as lantern painting, boat racing and tunneling. They make excellent survivors and are often employed as adventurers by others.

This often takes many days, in which the patriarch's spouse or heir will sit the throne for them.

next emerald deeproot visit • now

how lunall had managed to acquire the new elven land was uncertain even to her. she had stumbled upon the abandoned grove many moons ago, deciding it would suit her needs well enough until it's owner came to reclaim it. only that had never happened and as she continued her routine living, she realized she had become rather attached to it. elven arcana ran through the surrounding dirt and trees, pulsating through the lands like a fading heartbeat, growing weaker as the days passed - soon it would disappear, taking with it the magical pull the elves had left.

though it went against all of her natural instincts, lunall felt the urge to travel to the life pool for an answer to the lost magic. pacing through the forest, she intertwined her fingers together, debating if she shouldn't just leave the elven force alone and enjoy the quiet they had left behind. then again, she would like some social contact, even if elves weren't the best source of hospitality. and yet, at the end of it all, it seemed she didn't have a choice, as her paws led her to the glowing azure lake on their own.

peering down into the murky water, lunall frowned in discontent. she had visited many life pools before; enough to understand that something wasn't right. "you're dying," she whispered softly, a hint of sorrow in her words. the pool seemed to speak back to her, radiating with a weak pulse of energy. a pregnant pause hung in the air as her deep blue eyes searched the still surface of the water. finally, she spoke. "what do you want me to do?" as if to answer her, an image splashed across her vision. a grand mangled tree, surrounded by thick vines and gnarled roots. it's center pulsed bright with green mana. the emerald deeproot, it spoke to her. that is where she would find her answers.

the trek deeper into the forest was a long one, but she was prepared for it. her muscular feline body made it easier to traverse the treacherous woods than the elves and the life pool linked her to the deeproot, guiding her straight to it. when she arrived to her destination, lunall was overcome with awe. the behemoth tree stood before her proudly, emitting a bright emerald glow from it's core. she approached it cautiously, aware of her surroundings. when she arrived at it's trunk, lunall kneeled before it in respect, her head bowed low. gingerly, she rested her fingertips against its ancient, gnarled bark, its energy radiating through to her touch. "oulla," she whispered, feeling the resonating shock beneath her flesh, as though it responded to the name. "i will care for the grove, if it's what you ask of me. but i won't be able to do it alone. the life pool is fading and i can't help it. please, send me someone to be your vessel, who can care for the pools and link us together."

oulla had heard her words, she was certain of it. even after she departed from the deeproot, she could feel the warmth resting against her palm, reminding her of her promise. clenching her fist, lunall exhaled deeply, settling in for the night before she would continue the journey back to the citadel. before she would leave, she'd hunt for food for the long trek back.

Number of People: One
Next visit with Ancestors: Now

The sun glided like a golden galleon through the cloudless sky, the air was as heavy as stone and Hikmat was glad to have reached coolness of the oasis; it'd been so long since she'd seen the glitter and shimmer of water, instead of just some mirage which conjoured up the image of water, only to tear it away from her. Yawning, Hikmat shoved fistfuls of water into her mouth; gulping it down like a fish.

Now that she was refreshed, Hikmat could think more clearly and piece by piece, images of fire roared in her mind and Hikmat gave an almighty shudder. ''No.'' She whispered, shaking and staring bleakly at the lapping of water. ''No.'' Hikmat echoed, wishing away images of burning people and the smoke that had blinded her for so long. ''No...'' She wept, rubbing at her eyes and shaking her head. A storm of fire, family and smoke raged in her head, causing Hikmat to cry out and step into the water to clear her senses.

''No.'' She breathed, looking up at the vast sky. ''No, not again.'' Hikmat smiled weakly, clinging to the edges of her pearl-white robes. ''Never again, nobody shall die under my watch.'' She swore the oath to herself, standing up and taking a shaky breath. Before she could follow through with that oath, Hikmat had to have another soul around to guide her through her reign; she was only young after-all. Setting off once more, with a promise to return to the oasis, Hikmat sought out her ancestors, hoping they'd be merciful enough to bestow upon her a wise shaman.

Hikmat goes to talk to the ancestors and ask for a shaman; she also hunts on the way.

xxxxQutugh stared out across the valley below her, brown-and-white-peppered hair flying in the harsh winds despite all efforts to tame it, including a fur hood made of white bear fur. Her hands trembled on her staff, both due to the cold and the effects of the injury which meant she needed it upon her brain.
xxxx"Come on, Qutugh.”[/color] called her young companion. Jochi was several years younger than her, and had been her older sister’s apprentice, although he had grown past that label a few years back. He’d grown into a man, which was bizarre, as, despite her injuries, Qutugh could clearly recall him as a baby. She felt ancient, and she wasn’t even as old as her mother had been when she was born.
xxxxQutugh carefully lifted her weight from her staff, holding her feet carefully on the rock below her, before shifting the staff, and practically pulling herself over to the wood. When their village had survived, before it had fractured beyond recognition and her sister had died, Qutugh had, as a shaman, been able to grab rides on others’ shoulders frequently enough that she could walk everywhere she couldn’t persuade anyone to go with her fine. Now, with only one companion, she couldn’t risk that. She was sure her leg muscles were stronger now, but her left leg was still horribly malformed, with the bone twisting at uncomfortable angles, and her hips slanting heavily to provide all the force through the limb that she could muster. Her shoulder blade didn’t move correctly, limiting its movement backwards, her hand was wrenched out of place, and shoved back in, and so brutally that the scars from it were still evident. And when she’d slipped from her vantage in the highest tree in the forest at her childhood home, her head took so much of the force that she was lucky she had a skull at all. A dent in the back of her head, a strange sagging of one side of her face, some slurring of words, no memories from before, and frequent nervous twitches and shakes were her coming off lightly.
xxxxHer cousin had died from a similar injury, in excruciating agony. She was lucky.
xxxxWhen their village had fallen apart under conflict, and Qutugh’s sister had died, Jochi had both trusted her as an individual, and known that even if she wanted to hurt him, she wouldn’t be able to achieve much. He hadn’t said it, but it was obvious. Qutugh couldn’t blame him, and he had proved to be very helpful. Without him, there was no way that they’d have found even the scraps of food that they had to survive. Without him, her fleeting chance of finding people to look after them long-term would be nothing.
xxxxQutugh shuffled another few steps down, picking the shallowest path she could.
xxxx"Stop.” Jochi practically hissed. It wasn’t needed. She was travelling so slowly, because she was so nervous of losing her footing and falling down the slope to her right, that the chances of her movement alerting anyone was minute.
xxxxBut-
xxxxThere over the next ridge of rock-
xxxxIt wasn’t just the wind that made today so biting. The storms had truly set in for the winter, and snow blew so furiously across the land, that the wind was screaming a warning to anyone foolhardy enough to be in its path, but even the wind itself was no match for the sheer rage that snow could hold. Blizzards were mighty, and required a mighty being to create them, but no good being could create something so blood-thirsty. Storms would bite your nose, your fingers, your ears, your toes, anything they could reach, corrupting the flesh into blackness before the sheer horror of what they had experienced caused them to abandon you themselves.
xxxxThe snow deafened you, pounding against your ears, requiring that you wear a thick, muting hood, and bellowing at you until you gave up on ears.
xxxxThe wind blew away all scents, and even if it didn’t, all that would reach your nose would be damp earth.
xxxxWhile air to a degree of cold tastes fresh in the mouth, a blizzard in these mountains, where glaciers could plunge so low they were no longer a mountain feature, and cross a whole valley, was cold enough that you felt it in your belly if you opened your mouth a fingernail’s height, like a metal shaft rammed down your throat, the frost nipping at your lungs within.
xxxxEven through thick fur layers, Qutugh could feel the pressure of the wind behind her, and feel the force of it urging her onwards, and each increase – an increase from a base high enough that wind from the ground could easily whip up to chest height, and that Jochi had to lean forward almost to face the ground to walk against it – was a million daggers biting into her skin.
xxxxThe snow that whipped up, that swirled around – though an individual flake was beautiful and danced elegantly – worked together in mesmerizing patterns, to be as hard to see through as possible.
xxxxThe shape in the snow was barely a few metres away, judging by how huge it was, but she had only noticed it after Jochi had pointed it out, and he had very good eyes. In the dim light and through the snow, he was barely a pale grey silhouette.
xxxxA pale grey silhouette which was drawing closer. Clearly, he could see them.
xxxxHe’d barely paused for a moment, and a few huge steps closer, and he was standing in front of them, towering over them both. His eyes didn’t even glance at the staff – he’d already taken in Qutugh’s disability, as little as she liked that.
xxxx"Wherever you’re going can wait ‘til you’re warm.” The hulking figure said before – what?! – lifting Qutugh like she was barely a weight at all and moving her onto his shoulders. His hand clasped her staff. In freezing snow and with a slope beneath, Qutugh didn’t dare disturb his balance by trying to break his grip.
xxxxJochi reached behind him, and pulled out a spear. He was clearly cold through his furs, as demonstrated by the slight quiver in his arms as his hands shifted on the wooden shaft.
xxxx"Look, mate, we can have a fight out here and you can lose all your fingers and prob’ly end up with a couple broken bones or you can trust me a minute. If I wanted to kill you I’d have already. Blizzards aren’t the place for niceties with South-men.” Whoever this man carrying her was, he was a good sight stronger than any men in the village Qutugh was from – carrying her on his back, as well as what felt an awful lot like a bag of rocks, walking directly up the slope and not even panting slightly. Where were they even go-
xxxxOh.
xxxxAs they crested a flight of rocks, in a slight depression in the slope, was a single large travelling-house. It was made in arching bones from taiga giants, hides wrapped tight over it, probably large enough for about eight people if they didn’t mind the lack of privacy and the smell.
xxxx"Hey!” Jochi yelled after, stumbling in the snow as he tried to run up the slope to catch up. “Hey, she’s a shaman, you can’t - hurt - her, think what - the spirit - would - do…” Jochi was a good scout, but rather maladapted for snow. He trailed off as he saw the huge figure crouch down, leaning his back and extending one hand for a support so that Qutugh could struggle down. Her left leg sagged beneath her, but the giant caught her before she could fall in the snow, and hastily handed her her staff again.
xxxxThere were a couple of muffled voices from inside the tent, mainly one that sounded like a young and excited teen.
xxxxQutugh glanced over at the giant, and then firmly deciding she didn’t care about social niceties with a man who introduced himself by basically kidnapping her (even if he clearly did have good intentions), strode up to the tent entrance – as much as she could be said to stride, anyway. She brushed the material of the tent open, to encounter a dark space, lit by just a few small candles, cleverly secluded so as not to present the risk of anyone setting themselves ablaze in their sleep. And in that space were three sets of eyes, one far wilder-looking than the others, each marked out by the light reflecting off their scleras.
xxxxShe was barely inside before Jochi followed her after, and then the huge man filed in last, closing the entrance carefully behind.
xxxx"That’s awesome,” came the whisper from the wild-eyes’ direction. “He must be really brave to dare to threaten Melor with a spear.”
xxxxJochi slowly put the spear away.
xxxx"I am Bokotei Qutugh, this is Chengizgiin Jochi. I a- was the shaman of my village and I’m looking for somewhere safe that would keep us.”
xxxxOne of the sets of eyes slowly rose from its position, jerking to one side as they presumably shifted from a slumped position against something to a cross-legged one.
xxxx"You’ve met Melor, that’s Gyatso-" (“Hello!”) “-and his sister, Pema. I’m Nitin. You’re very welcome here.”
xxxxQutugh frowned.
xxxx"I don’t think you understood. I’m a shaman.”
xxxx"I believe that Nitin quite understood. We have come to the decision to keep travelling so as to avoid the band that destroyed our old home. As the shaman of our village has taken the long journey over the grey sea, we are lacking one, and gaining another who might join us would make – I am sure – more than just myself grateful. None of us have shown any tendency to be dangerous which I have witnessed.”
xxxxQutugh leaned more heavily on her staff, and preempting her difficulty standing, Jochi made the snap decision to help her down onto an empty patch of floor. Even if they did end up leaving first thing in the morning, it was getting into the evening now, getting dark, and they had no sign of shelter ahead of them. Staying here with strangers was preferable to sleeping on the ice. Here there was a risk of being killed in their sleep, rather than a certainty.
xxxx"I’ll consider staying if you get another tent.”
xxxx"I am glad that someone finally suggested that.”
-----

xxxxJochi swung out from the slope, kicking gently on the rock face and flying backwards, veering wildly across the face of the slope, his centre of mass forming a beautiful wide arc as the rope tied in a legged seat around his legs, connecting to another around his shoulders, redirected his momentum. After a second, Jochi was pulled back into the sheer cliff face, and bracing his knees, he neatly caught an outcrop of rock. He was at the lowest point of his journey, having tied himself onto a boulder far higher up, descending as far as he had the patience for, and plummeting like a loon down the cliff face until the rope snapped taut and held him suspended above a deep void.
xxxxA few neat movements of his legs, one hand holding onto the rope above him, and he started swinging as the end of a pendulum, until he connected with the rocks. He’d lined himself up carefully to get the best angle before he’d launched, and he was very close now.
xxxxAn ankle hook, and a nigh-impossible manoeuvre, where his hands took a grip on a nook barely a few centimetres wide above his head, and then somehow kept pushing higher and higher until his waist had risen to that same height. One elbow moved slightly to the side, giving him a point to wedge himself using his ankle alongside his elbow, and then moving the other hand, hooking his non-weight bearing leg on top of that arm, taking the weight off the first leg, Jochi left all the weight of his body on the grip in his left hand. Gentle shuffling does it-
xxxxThere!
xxxxSlowly, he pulled himself onto the outcrop which he’d used his arm to wedge himself in with. And here was his prize.
xxxxIt wasn’t just one wide outcrop, but many nestled together, some barely as wide as his foot. He picked through them, leaving the largest and fullest, so that the next generation of cliff birds would be healthy too, and provide more food for later years, but took anything that seemed defective or overly small. He found a blood egg – one with no shell at all, just a dark red mass in its centre, and carefully wrapped that up separately within the bag he carried, in case it broke inside, which would make it rather hard to store the others without it being contained.
xxxxIt wasn’t just an easy matter of moving into the nests without protest, of course. Many of the nests had occupants. But many others did not. Jochi chose his targets carefully to avoid any painful nips on his fingers.
xxxxOnce he was done (and before any angry parent birds returned), he hurried off the other edge of the promontory, only hesitating an instant before flinging himself a full stride’s distance, and hitting his target of a narrow gap in the rock with enough force that he was almost dislodged even as he got a grip with his hand. Almost. His front slammed into the rock. Luckily – or rather, with foresight – he’d attached the eggs to his back.
xxxxGetting back up was a far simpler matter of using the pressure between his limbs to keep one side of his body wedge in the narrow gap and using whatever leverage he could purchase in there. As he emerged from the chimney of rock (it having entered the cliff face a few metres from the top), he was greeted by Gyatso’s beaming face.
xxxx"You are even cooler than Nitin! You must teach me that!”

As Erze regarded her sister and the two men, she noticed that they were a rather somber group. The young Illus was the only exception. Although he was not smiling at that moment, she had already seen that it was a frequent occurrence, and his mere presence seemed to be lighting up the run-down shack they were standing in. The Hunting Chief Afriel, by contrast, was quiet and serious, and he had hardly spoken a word since he was sent by the Ancestors. Her sister, Ibaris, was always faithful and helpful, but she spoke only when she felt the need to. Neither of them had been particularly close to anyone when they were children, but she could feel a connection between them, a silent understanding.

She took a breath. "Afriel, you have been doing an amazing job. You are an exceptional hunter, and your patience is unmatched. The Ancestors were right to send you to us. Illus, although you are young, you have shown skill. I hope that you will continue to improve. Ibaris..." She looked at her sister, and she knew that Ibaris understood her sentiment. Spoken words could not express her meaning.

Ibaris nodded, and said, "Thank you, Erze." She smiled slightly at Erze and then left to visit the Healing House. Erze left soon after her and entered one of the buildings on the outskirts of the village. It had not been repaired very well yet, and the floor was bare. She kneeled down and felt tears forming in her eyes. She tried to quiet her mind, to feel.

A sound near the entrance made her whirl around, tears still shining on her cheeks. Illus stood before her, looking concerned.

"I am sorry to startle you. What is wrong?" He stepped closer to her, and she got to her feet.

"I am fine, Illus. What is it?"

"Really, you can tell me. I can keep a secret."

"It was nothing. Just a thought. Did you need something?"

"Yes, but it can wait. What is it? What upset you? Can I help you?"

"No, Illus, you cannot. What are you here for?" Erze could feel herself getting annoyed, and she willed herself to keep her cool and deal with him calmly.

Thankfully, the hunter dropped it, although his eyes were still concerned. "I was wondering what you want us to repair. I did not quite catch that."

"You could repair the holes in the buildings that we have been working on."

"Okay, I will." He hesitated, and then said, "Are you sure that you're okay?"

"Yes, Illus. Please go work on that now." She turned away from him and sat again, losing herself in thought again quickly.
