oceanpaw trembled as the clan closed in on her. at first, the accusations were being tossed at newtmask as well, but eventually the majority of the clan quickly settled towards voting for her. "i'm innocent, honest," she meowed with a tremble. "blackpaw was with me all night!" for a moment, the cats considered this, but somebody blurted, "maybe they're both killers!" then somebody mentioned, "she could have done it this morning - was he really awake the whole time?" her brother, blackpaw, raced to block her as the mob moved closer to her. "leave her alone!" he yowled. one cat tried to knock him out of the way, but squirrelstar blocked them. "they're apprentices," she reminded them. turning to blackpaw, she said, "you don't have to leave, but oceanpaw does. oceanpaw, i'll escort you to the border." blackpaw hissed at her while oceanpaw stared in shock. "we don't need you! we'll make it on our own." he placed his tail on oceanpaw's back gently to reassure her, and the two turned and fled into the forest. after being found by a riverclan patrol, they explained how oceanpaw was wrongly exiled and they joined riverclan.

squirrelstar went to the moonpool in hopes that starclan could help shed some light on this mystery. as she pressed her nose to the pool, she found herself fading until she awoke in starclan territory. but instead of the ancestors she hoped to see, the area seemed empty. until..."wake up!" a cat yowled. she saw a starry cat she didn't recognize running towards her. "quickly, you have to wake up!" squirrelstar tried to blink her eyes open, but she felt a sharp pain in her throat and couldn't move. she never left starclan territory again, and her body was found half-dipped in the moonpool with a slashed throat.

» Magpienose rarely slept peacefully anymore.
She'd wake up suddenly in her sleep, and she'd stay awake all night, her claws unsheathed and her yellow eyes watchful.
There was a feeling of dread deep in her chest The clan had exiled an apprentice, and another apprentice had gone with them. What had a clan been reduced to when an apprentice made that kind of decision.

Oh well. It was the morning now, and the she-cat rose to her paws. I should go hunting, she thought, heading to find Squirrelstar.
She... wasn't... there.

Magpienose's eyes widened. No. It couldn't be, she was just in the territory, right? She wasn't ready to be Magpiestar!
You're overreacting, she told herself, and headed to the medicine cat's den. Maybe Squirrelstar had gotten something for shock and stayed the night?

"Newtmask, Badgerfrost, have either of you seen Squirrelstar?"

[A Voice Among Many]

The apprentice den felt empty without Blackpaw and Oceanpaw. The brown tabby was still suspicious of the murderer being in the clan. After all, she trained together with the two on multiple occasions and they never showed signs of a cold blooded killer. She got up and headed out of the den. She needed to get away from the empty beds that use to hold the siblings. Maybe Squirrelstar would be having the apprentice hunt today. Her tiny legs made it harder to learn fighting techniques.

"No, I haven't seen her since she went to the moon pool." He replied, his heart suddenly pounding, did they wrongly exile two apprentices? Newtmask pushed the thought away and shook his head. "Perhaps she stayed a bit longer than expected?" He added, his tone was filled with worry and his voice was shaky.
