As the sun began to rise from behind the mountain ridges, the dogs of Vehementi gathered for their morning feast. It was tradition among the pack to eat breakfast and dinner together, and today was no different. Families trotted in with pups at their sides, eager tiros bounding around, searching eagerly for their mentors to pester about their plans that day. Many of the members of the elite canes imperatoris stood watch at their posts, muscles flexing beneath shiny coats, earning glances of admiration from many dogs.

One in particular made a spectacle among the crowd; Valerik. One of the eldest in the kennel, the canine was no less than a great figure among the empire. Wise and respectable, the massive wolf walked slowly next to Erebus, matching him in size. Two young pups bounded after them, Anaideia and Keres.

“The new members have been adapting rather well, wouldn’t you agree, sir?” Valerik asked conversationally.

Erebus glanced over at him, “Isolda was the only one who really deserves to be praised like that,” he replied, nodding towards the spanish mastiff. “I want you to take her out on a hunting mission with a few others, let her lead.”

Valerik felt inclined to ask why, though knew well enough the bully kutta wouldn’t tell him. Instead he nodded before going off in the direction of his own pups, Boreus and Khoine.

“Can I go with them, please?” Anaideia suddenly asked, stepping out infront of Erebus, nearly tripping over his massive black paws.

Erebus smiled softly, “Maybe when you’re older,” He chided, speaking quickly before he was broken off by her and Keres’ whine of protest. “Let’s find your siblings and eat before you try to convince me any longer.”

The three dogs quickly found the rest of the family, a part of the circle that had formed with all the Imperium dogs. Many of the kennel members had begun to lick their jaws, looking hungrily at the pile of prey that had been provided in the centre of the circle. Their attention quickly shifted to their commander as he approached. Erebus released a low howl as he moved to prey pile, picking out a large rabbit. He tore into it, swallowing a piece of flesh before turning back to settle down next to his family, signalling the others to eat.

The Imperator watched as dogs began to pick out prey, settling down next to friends or family to share a meal or start a conversation. A content chatter had risen into the air, and many dogs had begun to sprawl out on the stone tile of the courtyard.

“Imperator!” A high pitched voice called out to the bully kutta, earning the male to turn his head to see the labrador that had spoken. It was Aello, the former pet who the kennel had found only a few moons ago. Her eyes were wide with distress, and her voice shook when she had called out to him.

Erebus turned his head to look at Daedalus, but the hound was off talking with Pallas and Amadeus, the pups near to him.

“Imperator, I have important news!” She barked, dancing from one paw to another. “I think I saw a bear! You see, I was taking a patrol alone and I saw this huge —like, the size of maybe... uh.. maybe you?” She shook her head, seeming flustered. “No.. uh, I..—”

“Spit it out, for the gods sake!” Erebus growled, beginning to loose patience with the ditzy lab. He narrowed his eyes as she crouched down with submission, watching as she began to scuttle away. Erebus turned away, muttering a insult in his latin tongue. The bully kutta heaved a sigh of annoyance as he laid down next to Daedalus, who had returned from speaking with a pair of soldiers near the same time Erebus had walked away from Aello.

Erebus took a bite from his hare, watching Daedalus as he laid his head on his paws. The pups had slid up next to the pair, pressing against either of their fathers as they began to fall to sleep. Erebus smiled briefly, though his happiness was replaced by a sharp pain in his chest. His jaws parted, and he let out a strangled cough.

Blood began to coat his tongue, and the pain with him only began to spread, pulsing through him like a fire. Daedalus had quickly noticed, and let out a panicked yelp, his hazel eyes wide with distress.

“Erebus!” He cried, his voice strangled by emotion. By now, he had leapt to his feet, alerting the entire pack and soon creating havoc amongst the canines. Many began to crowd around the Imperator, who was writhing with pain. Others were frozen, staring with blank-faced horror as they watched their leader, Erebus, king of nightmares, heir to chaos, coughing up blood and wheezing with pain.

“He’s been poisoned.” Alair suddenly said, pushing past the rest of the crowd, trying to reach Erebus and Daedalus. Daedalus was terrified, shaking as he frantically pushed his muzzle against Erebus, whispering latin prayers through shaky breaths. He didn’t even seem to notice as the lanky leonburger began to nudge him. “Daedalus! Listen to me!” Alair snapped, biting the air only millimeters away from the hound’s nose. “He is loosing a life, and we must prepare for when he returns. Get some moss and poppy seeds, now.”

Daedalus nodded, though never lifted his gaze from Erebus. Alair practically shoved the socium away, who seemed to wind his way through the crowd with a dazed, panicked look in his eyes. Many of the dogs had continued to yelp and whine, though Stheno, Valerik and Isolda had begun to hush others, trying to usher them away.

“Our Imperator does not need any of your prying eyes, he needs our prayers and our loyalty. So get lost, all of you.” Stheno snarled, herding away the dogs as they watched Erebus begin to sink into the world of the dead.

Valerik cast a cold stare to the dogs as they began to scuttle away. “Loyalty? Considering this was done by a dog in the kennel, I believe not all of us can possess such a thing. So I say we ask for the wrath and vengeance that all those loyal possess. Whoever did this will pay in their blood.”

iiindent“euadne, keep your paws off of those herbs.” came the stern voice of the clumber spaniel, her nose buried in drying stalks and assortments of plants. the adolescent, although not particularly young enough to be a page, was quite rambunctious. as an adult they acted more like a pup than of their age, and ionna couldn’t help but believe that must be caused from her upbringing, a part of her life they had little knowledge of. even so, any youngster of the greaven empire wouldn’t dare act the way euadne does.

iiindent“come, i need you here anyway.” the clicking of claws on stone echoed from deeper within the chamber before a lean figure peeped through the darkness. their eyes were wide with excitement, every step met with a bounce of exploding nerves. “take these and hang them upside-down from the shelf.” ionna huffed.

iiindentthe priestess eyed euadne before nosing the respectable herbs toward her, watching cautiously as they gently gripped the herbs between their teeth and began to walk toward the shelf, then proceeding to string the herbs like she had been commanded. it wasn’t long before she returned, though, looking on as if waiting for more to do, bored. “anything else?” euadne questioned. ionna shook her head gently, eyes no longer focused on the adolescent or the herbs at her paws, but rather the restlessly sleeping haelen, bedded in a nest crammed against a wall of the hollow. before the priestess could say anything, the korean jindo could already see what she was looking at, the worry of a medic evident in her drooping eyes.

iiindent“what plagues your mind, ionna?” they asked. the spaniel sighed. “he’s weak.” she replied. “i’ve been tending to his health for two moons now. he’s not injured, he’s not sick, he’s just weak; he has no muscle on his bones to keep himself up, he suffers from the aftermath of dehydration, starvation. he had been traveling with nothing for a very long time, all to come across these lands, these unforgiving lands.” the priestess looked longingly upon the sick, a broken frown drooping along her maw.

iiindentit was still in the chamber, stagnant, dead. all was silent for a long while after, a pause, the only sound being that of haelen’s shallow breathing. “light some candles for me, will you. it’s getting dark.” ionna broke in through the silence. taken aback in slight surprise, the jindo merely nodded her head and darted off to fulfill the task she was set to do. just as the priestess had mentioned, evening was happening upon the landscape. when euadne glanced for just a moment outside the mouth of the chamber, she could just see the streaks of violet and orange above the pine treetops. it was a marvelous sight when one stood atop the glyfs, high above the forests, and watched the sun continue its daily course… but the jindo did not have time to do so this evening with ionna directing her every other second. and so she’d have to do without, for this was not a pleasant night—it was the night of capides.

iiindentreturning with a single, flickering candle handled between her jaws, euadne gently waved each wick with the flame and soon, the hollow was flooded with a pleasant light. shadows bounced to and fro, but the two females were not bothered. ionna was busy gathering the required herbs for tonight's celebration—red catchfly and euphorbia and wallflower being a few favored by the priestess during capides, each with their own intentions toward the ancient practice—while their helper carelly eyed the vizsla, whom was sleeping, to make sure he wasn’t dead yet. she approached the male and jabbed her nose into his flank, he jumping in shock, shooting her a questioning look. “it’s almost time, you should get up.” she commanded him. haelen huffed loudly and began his rise—he struggled with each move as he wobbled on his limbs, staggering toward euadne for support until she backed away with a grunt.

iiindenta breeze blowing through the night nearly nicked the flames from the candles, but they held and soon returned to their ambient flickering within the chamber. but another breeze that entered managed to deplete the flames to nothing—and as the trio looked toward the entrance in sudden darkness, they saw whom had entered the hollow and taken the life from the candles. kronos, the sovereign, whom brought a cold with every room he entered. his sharp glare glowed yellow in the darkness, at the priestess, then euadne, and then the sick vizsla huddling toward the wall behind. the dane lifted his massive head in a slow, intimidating motion, peering above the heads of the other canines.

iiindent“you’ll be prepared for tonight’s ceremony?” came his rumbling tone, surrounding the others in an unpleasant iciness. ionna nodded. “yes.” “and you,” he was now directing his eyes toward the younger female. “what are you doing here? don’t you have other tasks to attend to?” his questions were not to be answered, they were commands—digging into the skin of euadne as she held a stiff gaze with the sovereign. “prove yourself useful and help gather kindle for the fire.” he spat. pushing past the females, kronos advanced the cowering patient as he tried his best to blend into the back wall, his red fur unfortunately revealing him like a banner. the dane had to do little but lift a paw and apply menial force onto his shoulder, flipping haelen over onto his side with his legs giving-out from beneath. pressing his paw over the jugular of the vizsla, he lowered his head, low, until his nose nearly grazed their cheek. sputtering, haelen shut his lips tightly in shock.

iiindent“if i don’t see your ass on the field by the next full moon,” he hissed. “i will kill you like you should have been if i left you that day i found you.” the male was now quivering beneath his grip, rasping breath a sign of his evident struggle. they remained like this for a few seconds or more until kronos finally released his hold and stood, turning away in a single, swift motion and trudging toward the mouth of the cave. “he’s useless, ionna—i would’ve had him dead if it wasn’t for you.” and with that, he was gone.

iiindenteuadne, with wetness gathering in the corners of her eyes, blinked hesitantly as she peered over her shoulder to the sick. a newfound hatred bloomed from within her—it was him, she pondered, it was all him.

iiindentdarkness engulfed the land as if covering it in a thick, suffocating blanket. as black as the night came smoke billowing from a raging fine, deep within a groove of a pit—this pit being separated from the wells the empire inhabited. this pit, however, was reserved for its specific uses—ceremonies, meetings, and more included. tonight, on this dreary night, the pit was alight with flames threatening to extend their reach over the lip that curved slightly above the hollowed-out area. each bit of kindling the fire was fueled with the more it popped and crackled with pure malicious intentions, for tonight the beast was to be fed its most favored meal—sacrifice.

iiindentthough a fire does not really have emotions nor desires, do they? fire is purely but a thing of nature that, while complex, is ever so common. but fire is not living—it does not breathe the air we breathe.—yet we still fear fire as if it is living, posing it as a monster hiding in the darkness, or a disease spreading its torment. there are many reasons a being might fear fire, but tonight’s occurrences will become one of them for the many canines new to the lands. and while the greaven empire often works closely with fire, they also fear it for this night—the night of capides.

iiindentout from the shade of the pine trees came the figure of a small yet sturdy stature. this canine was soon recognized as ionna, and she, being the priestess, was adorned in many elegant pieces of clothing and jewelry that accompanied her status—the fur of a grey-pelted fox mended into a cloak was laid over her back, sinew thread tying it together over her chest, while a shimmering headpiece fashioned by workers of their allies, the crystalline militia, was atop her head in a royal manner, the jewels ametrine and chrysocolla quite noticeable in their shining glory. as she padded forward, though, her expression read opposite to the beauty she wore.

iiindenton her stern expression, there read a certain seriousness and graveness that caught everyone’s attentions and snapped their manner into place. once she entered the slight clearing, with the fire burning so bright it lit the darkness like a spotlight, she proceeded to a mound of earth with a flat stone atop it, perching above all others. already waiting for her presence was a layer of slightly-dampened straw and moss, non-flammable incase something weren’t to go as planned. she, seeming rather cold, took to standing as she waited for the sovereign.

iiindentafter ionna had arrived, the crowd that surrounded the pit in a ring, starting from the mound toward the front and around to the other side, began to quiet themselves into a hushed whisper. few voices dared to speak louder as they knew the one celebration they most dreaded was about to begin. so quiet, in fact, that the faintest sound of rustling in the wood caused them all to turn in attention. then out stepped kronos, he instantly catching the eye of many as his choice of clothing truly showcased the power he held—the coyote pelt he had reserved for this very occasion was laid across his shoulders, clasped around his neck with a brown leather strap, as the longer side draped over onto his right shoulder and flank. the robust dane also sported a collar encrusted with jasper, the red variant, and danburite, what might have been a gift from their allies. following kronos was a lean, elegant hound whom also showcased jewels around her neck. the pair, in all of their glory, shined in superiority.

iiindentboth headed their way over the mound and onto the perch, each greeting the priestess with a polite dip of their head. once the hound retired on the bed of moss behind kronos, the dane stepped forward and prepared to speak. though, before he did, he caught the eye of all around the flames as to gather their attention on him—however, there was really no need as they had already been at full attention even before kronos and his companion showed. “welcome all to the night of capides!”

iiindentkronos waited in silence for the crowd to settle once more. “i shall explain the purpose of this night, even though one should already well know it unless they hadn’t been listening. tonight, in order to pay respects to our god,” the dane spoke briskly, pausing briefly. “of whom sacrificed much of his time and effort to keep us alive and thriving, one of us must be succumbed to the fire—and if not by dawn one canine has burnt to ashes at the bottom of this very pit, the empire shall fall in peril!” shouts rang throughout the crowd, fearful of this possible outcome. kronos, however, was not finished. “and just a fair warning to keep in mind; i will be the first to throw anyone into the flames if such refuses, for i will not let the empire fall victim to the tragedy many dangers can offer.”

iiindenteverything was suddenly still, completely silent. not a dog dared to speak a word after having heard the words of kronos spill over the flames and into their ears. what Mikhail required of them to do seemed like quite a preposterous idea—but, to some, it seemed reasonable. instantly, many went to work on sorting through the canines they knew, ruling-out those they believed should live or die. those recently united would not once be considered for the sacrifice, as their union was the future of the kennel. any young or strong weren’t often thought as suitable sacrifices, as their presence was needed among the empire for their services. one dog, however, came into one’s mind when thinking of a victim—haelen.

iiindenthaving been sick and confined to the priestesses quarters, it was obvious to see his presence was useless and unimportant—all he did, in the current, was mope around and act pitiful. that had become clear to euadne, at least, as she had spent more time around the priestess, helping with her current tasks, including her tending of the vizsla. though, after their recent encounter with their sovereign earlier that day, a new, twisted thought had entered the korean jindo’s mind. “if he is so useless,” she mumbled aloud, voice low and mocking. “why not just get rid of him while we can?”

iiindentwith a force guiding her paws, one that she had never recognized before, euadne suddenly found herself slinking from her current placement among the crowd and toward the mound, where the vizsla leaned against the earth in evident pain. he was sick, though healing slowly, as over the past few days his results had shown the progress. yet, he was still weak, a useless trait any dog could ever have among the empire, a kennel based on power and status. the jindo kept her eyes locked on the target and kept low, hidden in the mix of furs that surrounded her.

iiindentas she finally appeared on the other side, ionna had stepped forward on the perch above and was chanting words well-versed by the others, the crowd following suite in a low and simultaneous murmur. their voices, however, were no distraction to the korean jindo as she continued to creep forward, like a snake slithering through the underbrush in approach to its prey—this prey, however, being a dog, a sick and vulnerable dog. the vizsla turned their head and sighed, watching the younger female with a slightly puzzled expression. “joining me for the ceremony?” he asked, voice hoarse and barely audible over the growing volume of chanting. not a world in response. as the silence from the female continued, haelen asked once more, “euadne?”

iiindentthe dog’s words, however, were cut short almost immediately after he had spoke them, being suddenly caught off-guard by shock and fright as the sharp sting of teeth piercing into his neck took his breath away—quite literally. letting out a yelp of pain, haelen howled in protest to this foreign rage that emitted off of the korean jindo, kicking their legs out in an attempt to deter this little demon that dared to attack him! that effort, however, would not last long, as the grip tightened and tightened, never faltering, and the vizsla’s vision began to blur, black dots fading over. his body was being dragged across the earth and toward the pit, the heat of the flames warming his flank as they neared. the strong and putrid scent of smoke entered his nostrils and filled his lungs, causing him to cough and sputter violently. “begone, weakling.” his killer hissed.

iiindentthe last anydog saw of haelen that night was of his body cascading down into the pit, fading deeper and deeper within. his yowls of torture rang throughout the night as he casted the ending cry of the ceremony. the flames leapt toward the sky in a sudden spurt of light, then faded back to what they had been, instantly engulfing their gift into flames. “to Mikhail he has gone.” called out the priestess. “to Mikhail he has gone.” the crowd echoed.

It took almost the whole night but Bella's and Rowan's pups were finally born. The whole kennel was excited to see new pups again. Well, mostly everyone. Pippa had decided to go out the whole time. The pups snuggles close to Bella's belly.
"At last, our pups are here!" Rowan shouted in excitement.
"Yes. Let's raise them to be strong little puppies," Bella smiled. They gave each other a nuzzle before Bella licked each pups head.

While Ilia was clearing space, Tulip kept an eye on the pups. She does this for every litter just in case something were to happen. Luckily for her, most births are successful. However, she had her eye on one particular pup. Rowan had named him Blaze, inspired by Bella's speed and hoping they will be the same. This little pup was fine for the most part but something seemed... Odd. She couldn't tell what at this stage. Ilia returned from behind her.
"Is there anything else to do?" she asked. Tulip turned to face her.
"Not really. But Ilia, keep an eye on that pup," she said, using her tail to point to the right pup.
"Why? Is something wrong with it?" she titled her head.
"I have suspicions... But he seems healthy for the most part," Tulip nodded to her own words. "Come, we should rest."
"O-okay!" The two shamans wandered over to their space in the cavern before sinking into their nests.

A couple hours since she left, Pippa returned home. It was quiet earlier in the morning so many dogs were asleep. She carefully made her way through the sleeping dogs and found herself in a quiet part of the cavern. A body moved from beside her.
"Oh, you're back," said Kanan.
"Yes," she simply said.
"A couple of us was starting to get worried, you know," he yawned.
"Don't worry, I didn't go too far. I just wanted to get away from all the kerfuffle here," she rolled her eyes. Kanan let out a low laugh.
"I see," he chuckled. "But you should go see the pups, too." She spun around and gave him a terrible look. "Why would I do that!?"
"Weren't they your friends?"
She looked around the cavern before getting to her paws. "Fine!" she spat. "I'll do it just once."
"That's more like it," he smiled. She scoffed, swished her tail and walked away to the nursery. Bella was surrounded by her pups while Rowan slept from beside her.

"Bella," Pippa said. She raised her head and gasped in surprise.
"Pippa! You came back home!"
"Of course. I wasn't going to stay out there forever," she laughed. Her smile didn't last long though. She stepped forward.
"Anyway, I'm here to say congratulations on your... On your pups."
"Thank you, Pippa," she smiled. Pippa looked closely at them. "They are pretty cute, though."
"Haha, yes," Bella giggled. Pippa caught herself staring at them. She quickly turned around.

"Anyway, see you later," she said and ran out. Bella smiled. She was glad Pippa talked to her again, even if it was just for a moment.

Nike slunk through the middle of camp. She thumped down on the hard ground and let out a deep sigh. Her eyes fluttered shut. Life was stressful. Every decision was a bloodbath of arguments. Mako suggested going left, Hayes insisted going right. Hayes wanted to go out hunting in the morning, Mako shot it down and demanded to go later on in the day. Every. Single. Word. The two brutes loathed each other and Nike had no idea why. Her eyes weren't closed for a heartbeat before she felt a paw gently nudge her. She groaned and nuzzled her face into the ground. Suddenly, there was a huff of breath tickling her ear fur. "Nike." Hayes' deep voice whispered "Come with me." His accent made his words slightly slurred, but Nike still didn't want to move. He sunk his teeth gently into her scruff and pulled her to his feet. She sighed, not having the energy to snap at him. She sat up, slumping over and looking at his groggily. "What do you want." Nike huffed. Hayes licked his lips and sat down close to her. "I'm sorry that the past few moons have been so bad." He apologized, dipping his head to show his leader the sincerity of his words "I know you are annoyed with us." Nike shrugged. She was about to say something when they were interrupted by Mako. ixxx▬barnum was a massive specimen; his thick pelt rippled over smooth muscle, his eerie white canines flashing when he spoke, his ears pricked forward with suspicion constantly.
ixxx▬he was truly a leader.
ixxx▬he had ushered the wall street wolves into the crumpling tent that he called his home; to many, the scents there were exotic, strange, never having been smelled before; the deep musk of massive beasts, grey-skinned things with teeth that were visible on the outside and ears larger than any dog, the feline-esque odor of something obviously huge, the red-tinted cat-beasts that snarled and growled at any dog who came too close.
ixxx▬barnum had a deep voice, a tone that commanded respect and threatened a growl if he did not receive such respect; adrestia admired him already, her eyes baleful as she gazed up at him from where he paced atop cold metal steps that the upwalkers once perched on to watch the odd beasts of the circus.
ixxx▬bianca had sneered at him when he had tipped his head up to gaze at the stars from a gaping wound in the tent's ceiling, snarking 'your ancestors will not rebuild your home'. barnum had turned his dark eyes on her for a long moment, a swollen silence filling the tent as antony shuffled slightly away from bianca lest she be reprimanded.

ixxx▬and thus, bianca was forced to shut her mouth, a feat that no dog had ever before accomplished.

ixxx▬barnum gave the new canines only enough time to settle, to claim their various dens and nooks and crannies of the tent as their own.
ixxx▬antony had been dubbed blessed by barnum when his powers were revealed (though blessed by whom, antony was not sure, for barnum obviously believed in no greater power). he was the first to select his den, the old cotton candy booth that still had the sweet, rich scent of sugar lingering in the air.
ixxx▬the pup-mothers were next, with their den being made from the shell of an old caravan that had tumbled into the side of the tent, whether it be from wind or other elements. the hollowed-out shell of a home was open on only one side, the former door exposed to the interior of the tent, and so the new mothers would be well-protected when they both went into labor and cared for their precious cargos.
ixxx▬and then the pupils; while hunting and patrolling might have been divided into two categories, pupils still would sleep in the same place. backstage, where performers once would get ready, maia and koi had joyfully selected the dressing room, where vibrant colors and various fabrics and textures appealed to their younger sides.
ixxx▬barnum had the most centralized den; the wooden base of the metal bleachers had caved in one one side, providing a vast, cavernous area beneath the seats that he called his own. cloth and other fabrics that he'd taken from the dressing room were thrown about in a messy nest-like arrangement.
ixxx▬the circus was no longer home to upwalkers.
ixxx▬the dogs had claimed it as their own.

ixxx▬barnum wasted no time in sending out patrols; he and antony returned quickly, another set of pawsteps following them. a tiny brute, a dachshund, a former prop in the circus, had been gnawing on a bone from a bird or some other small animal.
ixxx▬he claimed to have much experience in herbs; "tha name's o'malley," he had announced with a thick, unplaceable accent that set him apart from the other dogs of the kennel. "i know ever'thing there is ta know 'bout herbs!"
ixxx▬he claimed the crumbling ticket booth just outside the circus tent as his home, and set off nearly immediately to collect herbs.
ixxx▬antony can remember barnum giving a satisfied intake of breath.
ixxx▬the kennel was growing quite nicely.

Ira gazed at the Doberman Blaze was accompanying. "This is Claws." The Healer explained. He stood quite far from him, and for a good reason. Claws was snarling, and didn't look very happy. "Ok...." she murmured.

Ira gave a brisk nod. “Our leader is called a Monarch, and he holds power though his word is final, he always asks me.”
