the sun was up. Paws where prodding at Appletwig's side. "Huh? Lonepaw, is that you?" He blinked open his eyes, to see Ghostkit staring up at him. "Ghostkit? What do you mean where's Lonepaw? He went out last night and should be back by now." Surveying the den, he realized the medicine cat apprentice wasn't there. Thats weird... "He's probably just getting something to eat. Lets go take a look outside, shall we." The tabby tom stood up, shaking off any suspicions.

Acornstar blinked at Foxtail blankly for a second before answering. "I don't know," she murmured, her voice choked with grief. "Who would do such a thing?" She shook out her fur and took a deep breath. "We'd better get... Lonepaw back to camp." She carried the medicine cat apprentice back through the forest and walked into camp, dreading having to announce to her Clanmates that the murderer was still among them.

Ghostkit smiled, and leaped back Ok! she said happily, bounding outside. Immediately, she began sniffing all around the clearing, trying to find Lonepaw's scent. Lonepaw? she called, trying to peek inside the apprentices den.

Appletwig followed the lively kit outside into the warm clearing. "Now now, don't go bothering those apprentices," he called out. Too late. The tom sighed, and sniffed around the camp. Appletwig picked up Lonepaw's sent near the camp entrance. Stale. Fear gripped his heart. Lonepaw hadn't retuned.

Acornstar walked into camp and gently set Lonepaw's body down in the middle of the area. "Good morning, Appletwig," she murmured wearily, seeing the medicine cat nearby. She blinked at the medicine cats apprentice's body sadly. "Do you know what happened to Lonepaw last night?" she asked. The leader didn't think Appletwig was the murderer, but maybe he would know what his apprentice was up to. "I found Lonepaw's body just a few moments ago in the forest. I'm afraid the murderer it's still here in the Clan," she sighed. "Why was the little one out in the forest before dawn?"

Appletwig staired in disbelief at his apprentice. "Oh no!" He wailed. "This is all my fault. He wanted to got hunting for herbs last night, I should have stopped him." Grief clawed at his heart. He looked up at his leader, the guilt bearing down on him now and he spoke solemnly. "I'm so sorry Acornstar."
