When Kanuka opened her eyes, she was in an almost dream-like state. She could see ghostly figures around her, large foxes at least three times her size with stars in their pelts, but when she reached out to touch her muzzle to one, she went straight through. Kanuka shivered at the chill that ran through her, shaking out her thin coat.
”Kanuka of the Clay Claws.” A deep, rumbling voice demanded her attention, drawing her gaze to one of the largest of the foxes. Kanuka whined at the disappointment in his growl. Several of the ghosts paused their movements to watch the exchange. ”You know that the Skies do not approve of your mate choice; a mending vulpe’s priorities should be to his skulk, above all else. You have endangered your skulk.” The tod’s tail lashed angrily, his cold breath snapping against Kanuka’s face.
”I didn’t mean any harm,” the small vixen whimpered, recoiling as she dropped her gaze in submission.
”It doesn’t matter what you meant. The damage has been done,” the tod muttered, eying Kanuka’s swelling stomach. ”Why have you come to us?” He scoffed, rocking back to sit on his haunches.
”I have come to ask for a skulk-mate, a strong scout who will help protect us,” she requested in a small voice. Stealing a glance up at the overpowering tod, who was eying her incredulously. ”Please do not punish the skulk for my mistake,” Kanuka pleaded pitifully, closing her eyes tight.

Mouku pressed his muzzle into Kanuka’s quivering fur, drawing her from her sleep. Her eyes shot to his, wide and tearful. ”Did they come to you? Will they send us a skulk-mate?” the vulpe questioned hurriedly. Kanuka merely nodded, unable to bring herself to return Mouku’s comforting licks.

”Aruhe’s something, isn’t she?” Miro said, awed, to Niko. The second rolled his eyes, shrugging in disinterest. ”I mean, Inaka’s lovely but Aruhe… Aruhe is gorgeous,” the tod chuckled breathlessly, his attention barely on the hunt he had been tasked with. If Inaka wasn’t such an intolerable vixen, Niko would almost feel sorry for how quickly she had been tossed aside for Miro’s newest interest.
”Don’t you think you play the vixens around too much?” Niko asked with a frown, side-eying the larger scout.
Miro paused, then chuckled, shaking his head. ”I’m just looking for the vixen that’s perfect for me,” he said, throwing Niko a wink. Again, Niko rolled his eyes.

”Interested in Miro? Not in a hundred moons,” Aruhe laughed, a light sound that even Inaka had to admit was pretty. ”He’s obviously a flirt. Any vixen would be foolish to fall for his advances,” she added, playfully nudging Inaka’s shoulder, oblivious to the previous flirting between her two skulk-mates.
”He’s not all bad,” Inaka snapped defensively, flinching away from Aruhe’s teasing. Scowling, the short-legged vixen stalked ahead of Aruhe, tail lashing and leaving the white-furred vixen with a shocked look upon her face.

Kanyu was smiling brightly as she led Aweuta into the camp. The new scout gazed, wide-eyed, at the trees that loomed above and around her. It took her several moments before she seemed to notice Koyatoni. "Hello," she said with a gentle smile. "My name's Aweuta. I suppose that I'm part of this skulk now. I haven't lived with anyone but myself for a while now, so this should be nice," the vixen explained thoughtfully. "Well, it's nice to meet you. My name's Koyatoni," Koya replied. "Wasn't this nice!" Kanyu chirped. "Anyway, I can't waste any more time. I'm off to speak with the stars. I'd like to see if they'd be able to send us another skulk mate. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Oh, I'm so excited! Just wait until this forest is brimming with foxes!" The leader sighed wistfully, lost in her daydreams. "Kanyu..." Koyatoni said gently, "Are you sure you should be sharing all this with us? I think it might be wise to save it for the ancestors." Kanyu's eyes widened slightly. "Right. I should get going, then! You two can... bond. I'm sure that we'll all be so close in no time at all!" she barked over her shoulder before bounding into the forest. Aweuta let out a laugh that she had been stifling. "Isn't she excitable!" she giggled, her eyes shining. "She certainly is," Koyatoni agreed. "Anyway, we'd better get going. Would you mind hunting with me?" he asked. "No, of course not," Aweuta replied with a smile, walking by Koyatoni's side as they padded into the forest.

hyacinth and obsidian had split up, each vixen looking for their own bounty. "i found something!" hyacinth exclaimed, causing obsidian to rush over in excitement.

"what is it?" the silvery fox inquired, tipping her head as hyacinth laid a mouse and a plant at her paws.

"mouse bile and coltsfoot," hyacinth explained, picking up each medicine in her mouth. "i'll go take these to camp," she said awkwardly, voice muffled from the herbs. with that, she set off, back to the ravine.

while hyacinth dashed off, obsidian swung around, and continued looking for foxes. as she snooped about, nose pressed to the ground, her ears flicked up at the sound of a crack. stiffening, the silver vixen raised her black muzzle, signaling with her tail for silence when hyacinth returned. cautiously, the two she-foxes crept forwards, startling a todd who was standing a few tail-lengths away. "hello," obsidian began, trying to make the corsac fox feel welcome. "i'm obsidian," she flicked a tail towards the light ginger mending vulpe. "and this is hyacinth. we're a part of the skulk of the rumbling hive."

the pale brown fox stepped forwards. "i'm dust," he introduced himself, dipping his head to the two skulk members. "and what is this skulk you speak of?" and with that, obsidian gave a lengthy explanation of what her skulk was. "erm- thanks," dust said, a bit uncomfortable from listening to a stranger list off everything there was to know about her society. he caught hyacinth's eyes, who merely shrugged. "and.. your skulk sounds... cool."

obsidian's brown eyes lit up. "wanna join?" she barked, excitedly circling the dirt-colored todd. "you could be a scout! oh, did i explain what that was?"

dust grimaced. "yes, yes you did. you said, and i quote, 'a scout is an average member of a skulk. they train pupils, hunt, patrol, and- like the name suggests- scout. they are usually expert trackers, though each fox may vary in its own skills and strengths. a scout is below the mending vulpe and second in rank, though above the ranks of pupils and equal to queens and elders.'" smiling proudly at the two vixen's astonished faces, he cleared his throat. "yeah, i've got a pretty good memory. anyways, about joining this place. sure! it sounds pretty alright."

"great!" hyacinth barked, stifling a chuckle as obsidian eagerly listed every other detail about the skulk that she hadn't mentioned. "well, tell obsidian i'll be at camp. i doubt she can hear me over her own words! i've got to sort my herbs. yesterday, i arrived at the skulk with yarrow, borage, juniper, and comfrey, which i will now add to my newly collected coltsfoot and mouse bile. you see, mouse bile, though it sounds quite odd, is a very important- oh this isn't interesting." she turned around in the direction of camp. "well, see you later, dust! i'll be at camp, doing herb stuff."

"are you coming, dust?" obsidian called, startling the fox in question who hadn't payed attention to a word she said.

"erm, sorry," dust said flusteredly. "what do you want me to do?"

obsidian rolled her eyes. "come hunting with me, silly!" as soon as dust nodded, she gave a little bounce. "great! you look like an awesome hunter, i'm sure we'll find loads of prey!" and with that, the two foxes set off.

The Skulk of Whispering Sands

"This is our camp," Peachlily began. The fox she was talking to was called Cygnus, and she had found him when she had checked the borders with Dipper. He looked starved, so Peachlily thought that she could give him some fresh-kill and maybe he would join their skulk — after all, in Leafbare, the more foxes the better. "And that's the Starpond," She gestured to the large pond in front of them with her tail. "Across that is the Starfall, where I go to meet the star that watches over our skulk, and ask them for a new fox to join us,"

Peachlily gazed at the rushing waterfall. Perhaps she could visit it tonight? It would be better than going on a patrol, where it isn't certain that they would find a new fox. And to add to that, if they did find a fox, what if he or she isn't trustworthy? Going to the Starfall would mean that that fox had been chosen by the skies themselves, which seems much safer than getting a random stranger to join. "Any questions?"
"Why do you have that lilypad on your head..? It seems a bit odd," Cygnus questioned curiously.
"It is how I communicate with the skies quickly. If our skulk was in a dire situation, such as a fire or flood, travelling all the way across the Starpond to reach the Starfall, when I could easily fall in, isn't very helpful. Instead, I use my lilypad — all leaders must wear one." Cygnus nodded. He didn't seem weirded out that the leader of his new skulk wears a plant on her forehead, or that water lilies must never be touched, or even that Peachlily sleeps in a tree. He just nodded, taking it all in.

Aries and Dipper were doing fine when they got back to camp. Dipper was suspicious of Cygnus, but Aries didn't seem to mind. In fact, Aries and Cygnus were both quite nice to each other — no romance involved though; just friendly chatting. Peachlily wondered if Aries would find a mate soon. The timid vixen had decided that she wanted to be a permanent queen, for hunting and attacking didn't come very naturally to her, but mothering kits was something that she seemed interested in. Peachlily wondered if she would have kits anytime soon. Probably not, she had thought, for her duties as leader were far more important.

"Foxes of Lilypad's Judgement," she had called from a fallen down tree. "I will be going to the Starfall to ask for a mending vulpe, who will help if any fox catches a cough or cold in this time of Leafbare. Luckily, the pond has frozen up, so I am able to reach there much quicker, but I'm going to take Dipper in case the ice breaks and I slip in." Dipper nodded obediently. "Alright, let's go."

next visit to the star-tree: thursday july twentieth

Song had trotted into camp through the chilly weather, the tiny little fox behind her. When asked for a name he told them all that his name was Beetle and Song had nodded approvingly. The little todd had been given to Branch for training and while the todd was young.. both of them.. Song trusted Branch to teach Beetle the ways of the new skulk he'd joined.

A moon later and Beetle knew better then to join in the sacred dance circle and he knew to only speak when spoken to. Branch seemed to be doing well with the little todd. The one thing the skulk was missing was one to heal wounds.. A vixen unlike the rest of them who knew how to stop injuries from spreading. Song set out late that night to go to the star-tree while the rest of the skulk conducted business as usual.

The Skulk of Whispering Sands

Number of Foxes: 1

Abandoned. The little fox had been abandoned --- left for dead by the rest of his Skulk for little to no reason that he knew. He had been sleeping in the day, and when he woke up, they were gone. The whole lot of them. Dens empty, paw tracks leading out until they eventually stopped. Aeron had followed them all the way to the end, where the track went cold, thanks to the sweeping, harsh winds of the desert.

He had no idea where they had gone, and the little fox had little more to do than wander the desert aimlessly. Abandoned territory was bad juju, and he wasn't going to remain there. Besides, who was he? He certainly was no leader, that was for sure, and it would be too painful to stay in the place that he had called his home for all of his life.

The desert was harsh, and the little fox could only handle so much. The heat was unbearable, and by the time night time fell, he wanted to collapse. Aeron wanted to give up the search, to call it quits and just lay down to let the heat take him. But...he made one last prayer to the stars before falling into the sand, dust puffing up underneath him.

Please....stars....show me the way. I'm all alone, and exhausted. What am I meant to be doing?

The cry was a desperate one, and just as he was about to let his little head fall into the sand, a shooting star streaked across the sky, so bright it hurt his eyes. Aeron's eyes widened. That had to be a sign! He rose to his aching paws, and, with new energy that flowed through his limbs, he raced off in the direction the shooting star had shot, hoping to find something before daybreak.

And find something he did. A perfect space for a new camp, something that hadn't been claimed by others. A giant sand dune guarded this place, sheltered from the harsh winds that otherwise buffeted his old home. And, not too far off, there was a small oasis that they could use to cool off.

Aeron knew now that this was going to be his home. He also knew that, if he were going to make it, he couldn't be alone. He asked the stars to bring him a companion, preferably a mending vulpe, so that he wold be able to start his new life here. He knew that, if this were to be, he would found a Skulk based on gratitude for the stars, and a big focus on community, so that no one would wake up alone ever again.
