“What do you mean, there's a log in the way!?” Koa’s panicked voice echoed through the cave. Kiko tried desperately to sooth him. “Well, the wind must have knocked over a tree, and now it’s blocking the way out,” she explained calmly. Koa didn’t understand how she was so chill about the whole thing. “I’m sure we’ll be fine,” she added. Koa lost it. “No!!,” he exploded. “No, it will not be okay. We will not be okay. Were stranded on a stupid island, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN. And now we're stuck in a tiny cave, about to run out of air. So, no, Kiko. NO WE WILL NOT BE OKAY!!” Kiko took a step back. “Well,” she started. “Maybe if we-”
“No,” Koa cut her off. “There is no we. Your the reason were going to die in a tiny cave, on a random island, in the middle of nowhere, away from everyone we know”
“Well, you're the reason we’re here in the first place” she defended herself. “No!” Koa snapped back. “I didn’t ask you to come after me. You knew the risk you were taking. You can’t turn around and blame me for this” Kiko flinched back, and Koa felt a little guilty. Sure he was grateful that his sister had come after him. She had saved his life. But he was beginning to feel like it had been more than luck that had brought him and his sister to the island.
Kiko had immediately started to try and move the log, but Koa knew better. Instead, he began to dig through the sand, using water from a tiny stream to pat down the sand, and lead the way. He also used it to breathe. It came from a small crack in the wall, not nearly large enough to fit two cats, even if they were still kittens. But it showed him where the way out was. And so he dug, trying to ignore the sand that burrowed into his claws, scratching against his skin. Kiko called back to him, “I could really use some help,” she said. Koa ignored her, still mad at her for getting them into this mess. He knew his strategie would work. Then, Kiko could see that he didn’t need her. He was going to dig until they got out, even if it took all day.
Luckily, the rocks didn’t go deep into the ground, and Koa could tell that it wouldn’t take long to get to the surface. And that's what kept him moving. Every time there was a cave in, he kept on digging. Soon, the sand turned into a thick mud, which helped a lot, as it was easier to pat down. As he dug through the mud, he could feel the air getting fresher. It would probably only be an hour before he reached the surface. At this point, the tunnel he had created was large enough for him to fit in, meaning that he had to go fully into it to work. And he was far from happy about it. Possibilities flashed through his mind. Falling mud trapping him inside, or crushing him completely. But he pushed past those thoughts. If he didn’t get out, he was going to run out of air, and that didn’t seem like a good way to go. Several times he almost turned back, his fear too strong. He could hear Kiko calling his name, but she seemed distant. He pushed himself further and further, unsure if he was even able to stop. He doubted it. He got like this sometimes. Focusing on one thing so strongly that everything else seemed small and distant. But this time, Koa knew that his plan would work. He knew that he would succeed.
Koa collapsed from exhaustion on the mud. He panted. Looking back, he saw that the light from the cave was dim and far away. Looking forwards, he could sense that he was close to the surface. Fresh air. Freedom. His muscles still ached from being thrown around in the ocean. He had to force himself to stand up. The air was getting thin. This far down, he didn’t even have the air from
the stream to keep him alive. He had used up almost all the air in the tunnel, and found himself gasping for breath. He forced himself to his feet, and raked his claws through the mud, pushing it to the side. With every breath he took, the next one was harder. He dug and dug and dug, until finally, he collapsed. He had run out of air. He was going to die here. But, by some miracle, as he fell against the mud wall, it crumbled down to reveal the forest floor. He passed out, his head just barely reaching the grass.

Yeehaw :3
