the silent brothers are a group made of feral canis lupus familiaris—and being a brother is usually an unchangeable fate. once sworn into the brotherhood, they must undergo a series of rituals that will turn them into silent brothers, and change their name—symbolic of their new lives as brothers, and not lone dogs. they are the keepers of the lore of the brothers. they are archivists, researchers, and scholars. those who are specifically chosen are healers and priests. being archivists, they keep extensive record of all transactions, operations, and history of the brothers within the confines of the silent city. additionally, they keep exhaustive records on all members of the brothers, and their records stretch even as far back since the beginning of their founding.
TERRITORY/BASE OF OPERATIONS
the silent city is their base of operations, or territory, if you will. it is an extensive and complex citiy of levels and chambers so vast and deep underground. found on the two upper levels of the city are it’s archives and council chamber. beyond this are several other levels mostly kept a secret from and off limits to non-brothers and sisters. at the lowest depths of the city are a series of levels which hold the necropolis of the brothers—the graveyard, ossuary, and mausoleums—where those who died in battle or other means are buried and entombed. aboveground, they are located in a sparsely populated village, with a river on their left separating them from the mountains, and on their right, a dense forest. to the south is a beach, a little ways off from the village is a farm.
THE RANKING SYSTEM
the council
alpha— the alpha has the power to do whatever he’d like to the brotherhood, and is only limited by the power of the gods they worship. gabriel the silent was their founder and the first alpha whom was chosen by the gods—most of the time, however, the alpha position is passed down to the beta when the alpha dies or retires. this is not always the case, however, because the beta can be challenged for the rank of alpha if a canine believes they are more suitable for the position.
beta— the second in command of the brotherhood, the beta is hand picked by the alpha, and usually, the alpha will pick an older irontooth, as younger ironteeth are usually too unaccustomed to looking over the brotherhood. the alpha position is passed down to the beta when the alpha dies or retires. this is not always the case, however, because the beta can be challenged for the rank of alpha if a canine believes they are more suitable for the position.
healer— the healer is always chosen by the gods, and is given the Sight—an ability which allows them to communicate with the gods in their dreams, and to point out omens. they are also the bearers of prophecies, and use herbal remedies to heal sick or wounded brothers.
priest— the priest is the leader of their annual worshiping of the gods, and preforms religious rituals and ceremonies with the healer, such as brotherhood initiation.
the middle class
wardens— also known as sentires or guards, the wardens are a group of elite brothers enlisted with the duty to guard the entrances to the silent city, and the nursery for nursing or pregnant brood dames.
ironteeth— the warriors and hunters of the brotherhood, older ironteeth are given the utmost respect, and even after graduation at the age of thirteen months old, young ironteeth look up to the senior warriors and are told there is always more that can be learned from them.
tenderpaws— from the age of six months up to the age of thirteen or fourteen months, tenderpaws are older pups who train and learn underneath the ironteeth. upon graduation and passing their assessment, they are welcomed among the irontooth ranks as fully fledged members of the brotherhood.
midwives— are she-dogs who have experience as nursing mothers and in giving birth to pups, and they too like senior ironteeth are given the utmost respect. they aide the healers and nursing or pregnant mothers alongside their irontooth duties. some times, they retire from ironteeth life, and become permanent brood dames.
brood dames— are she-dogs who are pregnant with or nursing pups. being the bearers of the life of the brotherhood, they too are treated with the utmost respect. most times, they will return to irontooth duties once their pups are tenderpaws.
gnaws— gnaws are canines who have crippling injuries that make them unable to do regular irontooth duties. instead, they are used to inscribe stories and information for the archives onto bones.
the lower class
omegas— omegas are canines who have betrayed the brotherhood, killed a brother, eaten out of turn, or failed initiation. they are the lowest of all canines, and are treated with disrespect and cruelty unless they have proved themselves worthy to return to ironteeth duties.
