I like writing essays (on topics I enjoy, anyhow, although at uni that is thankfully most of them). It's very neat being able to research into a topic I like and being able to write out all my thoughts in a coherent manner, and I often find really nicely written articles on the subjects. I have been reading a good one on Plato's Apology, and the writing style of the author has a good balancing point of being formal but not being stuffy at all? It sort of feels like I am being whisked by a magic man off into the Narnia of Plato. (The author is Burnyeats, if you were curious). I'm very much looking forward to two essays I'll be writing next year, which are about topics completely up to my choice. I'm probably going to discuss a book I really like (Soseki's Botchan) and a historical period that's interested me but which I haven't had a chance to formally study, which is the French Revolution; I read a really neat book on the guillotine, and I'd love to go into depth about it in a piece of writing.
