welcome to wallace, idaho. a relatively small town with big dreams. th
eir small population is rather inclined to the outdoorsy style of living w
ith numerous trails surrounding the town leading into the nearby forest
and the mountains it surrounds. the town is spread throughout a smalle
r sized valley. on main street there is a numerous amount of small shop
s and a fancy hotel. additionally, there is a small plaza that leads towar
d the mayor's house and office. off of main street there are plenty of sm
all suburbs, as well as a rather meager elementary, middle, and high sch
ool. not to mention just on the outskirts of town a small farm house own
ed by the infamous lancaster family, offering stables and farm access to t
he town. welcome to wallace, or as we call it the center of the universe.

└────────────────────┘
when rumors of an outbreak sweeping through the east coast started fly
ing around the small town, many citizens left wallace in order to seek o
ut family and make sure they were safe. the rumors, however, turned o
ut true. by the time the cdc had confirmed the outbreak and the fact th
at no cure had been found or prepared, wallace was already verging on
becoming a ghost town. few families had stayed to care after their hom
es, but those who did found themselves hiding away in fear for their live
s. it wasn't until a herd moved through town and destroyed much of the
land that one person stepped up and decided to lead the town to safety.
so hanna martins, the adopted daughter of the late martins couple, took
control of the town with her darling banjo at her heel. hanna began with
the local hotel off main street where she set up her camp and began cle
aring the town street by street, coaxing her neighbors and friends to join
the real world, and to join the fight. but that is not where our story begi
ns. our story begins the day after the herd moved through and destroyed
dear, old wallace and hanna moved into the hotel.

It was the early morning. Only one bird was whistling in the sun but it was enough to wake Saki from her slumber. She sat up and stretched before getting to her feet. She picked up her make-shift bed (which was made from cardboard and an old blanket) and put it away into a locker she broke into. She moved in silence as she got ready for the day. The train station, which would usually be full of people, was quiet with Saki being the only person inside. It had be a very long time since she saw another face. Well, a living human face.

She had seen many of those ...things around since the incident. It was a slow downfall but it happened and there was nothing to be done. But Saki had decided that no matter what she will survive. She patted down her dress and picked up her knife. She peeked outside. It was quiet and no one was to be seen. She was aware it could change any moment but there was no good staying inside all day.

"Well, I guess I should head out for the day," she thought aloud to herself. She ran out and started to explore. Hopefully she'll be able to find something, or someone.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx─ THE SURVIVORS.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxthe first generation survivors of fernsilk hotel are often ones left behind by their deceased loved ones in depserate need for protection. they have gentle and friendly demeanors, as they were taught being brought up. they would never turn a blind eye to a hungry child or a cold elder. though, as months pass, the path of leadership could shift either way.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx─ THE SANCTUARY.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxthe survivors of fernsilk take shelter in an old abandoned hotel just a mile or so away from the city centre. it is rundown, but there is enough space to grow a happy community. there are open spaces outside for hunting for food and growing herbs. the children train in an emptied swimming pool just bordering the doctor's makeshift centre. this hotel is home for all survivors that may stumble into the city, and they call it their sanctuary in such hard times to come by.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi would love to request this girl as my founder if it isn't any trouble !!

    [ Introduction ]
Sheltering in an abandoned library, Atlas Anthology is home to a lot of misfits - perhaps these wandering souls didn't feel comfortable alone, and didn't feel comfortable in a more rambunctious group of survivors. Typically, the people that find themselves called Atlas home are introverts who prefer to be alone, though there isn't much of a chance of survival staying that way... Instead of risking their lives, they decided to band together with others that have similar ideas. Atlas is generally cautious about who they allow to stay with them, choosing to turn away aggressive or pushy people. These people grew up reading stories about dystopian societies; they don't want to take any unnecessary risks when it comes to trusting people.

Image

    [ The Founder ]
A bookish person called the library home years before Armageddon even took place. They practically lived there, spending every waking moment browsing the vast collection of knowledge in the building. It was here they felt the most comfortable, and here they chose to defend. Perhaps this person is a little conceited, but they consider themselves the best defense strategist in the area. The only problem is, they need others to carry out their plans... It was only recently that this person decided to open the doors of the library to new members, hoping they would be able to interview any possible survivors to make sure Atlas remained a safe community. Only time will tell if this person's leadership is truly as good as they say it is...

Image

    [ Ranks ]
      Captain -> Curator.
      Lieutenant -> Archivist.
      Soldiers -> Guardians.
      Elders -> Advisers.
      Trainees -> Students.
Hunters, Medic, Mothers, and Children remaining the same.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I don't have anything in particular in mind for my founder - anything will do. I'd prefer images for the survivors in my group. I'd like my founder to bring a standard bow with them, if that's ok.

━━━━ 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙮𝙪𝙢
atreyum (uh-TRAY-um), a monarchy that fell under the rule of the original founder, is now solely lead by the one and only jericho freeman. the young australian took his late father's position as the crowned head whilst the elderly gentleman fought illness. atreyum, under the rule of jericho, is planned to be a warm and welcoming space. the people of atreyum are split into social categories based on their positions within the monarchy's four tiered hierarchy pyramid- the royals, sweetwater, willowwood, and cedarsmoke. / as this is a seaside space, atreyum typically lives of seafood- fish, shellfish, et cetera. this group of survivors is particularly unexposed to a lack of drinking water, as bi-nightly, the people gather in the center and boil any water their household may need for the next day. + will edit in more about atreyum later
━━━━ 𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙮
royals ━ the high class members of atreyum
crowned head ━ the king or queen.
red crown ━ the crowned head's significant other.
heir ━ the heir to the throne(the firstborn of the crowned head and the red crown).
number two ━ the second in command; rules below the crowned head.
crowned croaker ━ the royal doctor.
sweetwater ━ the not-quite-royalty. personal favorites of the royals, though.
the hounds ━ the royal guard
croaker(s) ━ doctors/healers
primus bruiser ━ the head of the bruisers.
primus venator/venatrix ━ the head of the venators.
primus vulture ━ the head of the vultures.
cedarsmoke ━ the working class atreyum peoples(16-75 yrs).
choicers ━ an unofficial rank within atreyum. this rank is available for a few short hours on the 16th birthday of all atreyum litters.
bruisers ━ people in charge of defending sullivan's island. when not serving, they are laborers and blacksmiths.
venators ━ people in charge of gathering food- farmers, fishermen, gatherers.
vultures ━ people in charge of gathering non-food items on expeditions; clothes, metal, medicine, etc.
willowwood ━ the lowest class- considered middle class.
elders ━ the elderly population.
matriarchs ━ women with children fifteen and under.
litters ━ children fifteen and under.

━━━━ 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙛𝙨
although there is no specific religion required in atreyum, jericho and his priors were/are followers of the kuatina(koo-UH-teen-UH), a quartet of three gods and one goddess. merida, the sole goddess and front of the quartet, represents fire. the gods, markus(earth), mitch(air), and michael(water), are the lesser gods. this religion is considered universalism.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

    ──── ⊰ ONE YEAR AGO.
“Salem!” A sharp voice called out, summoning a massive alabai dog to Neith’s aid as she rammed an elbow into the chest of a zombie, earning grunt from the corpse. From aside her, the canine leapt onto another of the undead, fangs sinking into rotting flesh as the brute knocked the infected from their feet. The pair tackled another one of the zombified before turning tail, seeing an approaching herd of the horrid creatures nearing.
⠀⠀They leapt over the hood of a silver car, Neith’s raven hair billowing out behind her like a plume of black smoke, Salem gracefully following her lead. She released a slur of profanities beneath her breath, angrily muttering words about how she should’ve gotten her guns, or at least a couple of her best knives from the hotel room that she had been staying at, prepping herself and organizing her items for her work tomorrow.
⠀⠀But of course, the apocalypse was not one to give you a fair chance. Survival was for the few, and it was hard to even call them the lucky ones. Life was a constant struggle, with even the downtime between fighting the undead leaving one to plague themselves with their own dark thoughts.
⠀⠀If only Neith had known such things in the moment, when she would’ve been more fixated upon finding Ecko and getting weaponry and food to sustain themselves.
⠀⠀Rather, the girl had been more interested in attacking the undead and finding some form of temporary shelter. She had been confident her girlfriend would be more than capable to hold her own against zombies— something that even a year later Neith swore by— and certain that this was some ridiculous fluke by the government, that they would clean up their issues in a swift sweep.

    ⠀⠀That never happened.

    ──── ⊰ PRESENT DAY.
⠀⠀ Neith sat slumped against a white leather chair, stroking the short fur of her canine companion, Salem, who rested his head upon her thigh. She glanced out of the massive window that stood before her, briefly contemplating if she should go down onto the balcony and enjoy the sunrise, but knowing well enough that even small moments like standing out to watch the sky could be a detrimental mistake.
⠀⠀ The girl heaved a sigh before standing up, Salem looking at her expectantly. She smiled momentarily, scratching the large dog behind one cropped ear before walking off from the bedroom loft down a spiral staircase. Salem followed promptly, though with more caution as he stepped down the wooden steps, still unsure of the twisty steps despite the pair staying in the penthouse for just short of a month.
⠀⠀ Memories of their arrival to this place still rang fresh in her mind, remembering the hoard of the undead that had chased after her, filled by terrible creatures like lurchers. Neith remembered the lifeless stares they had given her, filled with only a single emotion; hunger. Perhaps they were once living, but now they were simply the shell of their pasts, filling the silence of an empty world with their groans.
⠀⠀ When they had come across this place, Neith had nearly collapsed with relief, knowing that a place like the luxurious Riese Central Station providing safety and shelter for them was hard to come by. She had been to the fancy railway station once or twice before, speaking with potential clients of the dangerous business she called her job. She was an assassin and bodyguard, known internationally by others in her line of work as a skilled woman in her practice. She was a rival to many, with attempts on her own life having happened on more than one occasion. It wasn’t a job in which you’d find friends, but rather enemies and rivals. The only person she had known to befriend was Ecko Falke, who wasn’t an assassin but rather a medical student with ties to various criminals, many of which related by blood. Neith had been assigned to be her bodyguard, and they developed a close bond.
⠀⠀ The woman sighed, eyes fluttering closed for a few seconds too long, lips tugging downwards into a sad frown as she thought of her time with Ecko, which felt bittersweet considering that the two had been separated when the apocalypse had just begun.
⠀⠀ “Come, Salem,” Neith said, beginning the walk to the door, “let’s go.”

from outside: vision panicked inwardly,
knowing it had to be the undead.

vision jumped awake, breaking
into a cold sweat. that dream had
been replaying in his head every day

shaking his head to rid himself of the

checkers turned her head to nuzzle

the pair headed straight to the

when a waving hand terrified him.
sure it was a zombie, he swung himself
onto checkers and prepared to flee. but
when the young lady ran up, he relaxed greatly.

"I knew you weren't undead!" she
panted, eyes wide. a thick leather satchel
hung over her shoulder, and gently worn
leather boots clothed her feet. vision
watched cautiously as she turned and
beckoned, and stared in surprise as
another survivor emerged from behind her.

the lady explained, waving

''W-what?'' Groggily, Garnet got to her feet and stood for a few moments swaying - She didn't want to do this, not this early in the day. ''Ashley, if that's you...'' The little worm lived in a town a few miles away, and the hatred was as instant as it was mutual. ''Absolute bi-...'' A loud clatter of splintering wood, and instantly adrenaline flooded her senses. ''...'' The lions on her left arm seemed to tense, their inked eyes narrowing among the painted violets. ''...'' There was the braying, far more instant and much more close than it had been before.

There was a splintering of bone and squelch of moldy flesh.

''What the fu-!'' Garnet's jaw dropped, hands still on the handrail. Before her stood a grey and white donkey, petals dripping from a crown around it's ears. At it's cloven and bloodied hooves lay the body of a walker, dead-eyed and fly-swarmed - It's skull was smashed in. ''...You did that?'' She pointed tentatively at the corpse, trembling slightly. Garnet had no food, no weapons of any kind and she could've died - The walker was terrifyingly close to the lighthouse after-all, and couldn't recall having locked the door.

Snuffling, the donkey nosed at her jacket before resting its heavy head on her shoulder - It was a strange sort of comfort, similar to someone resting a hand on your shoulder but a whole lot fluffier. Dark-brown eyes stared up at Garnet as she quietly mused over the walker - How had they come to be that way? Were they trapped in there, whimpering quietly for mercy? Brushing her fingers slowly through the donkey's stiff mane, Garnet closed her eyes and felt the sting of salt behind her eyelids. ''Come on.'' Garnet whispered, pulling herself away from the bloodied scene. ''We don't need to hang around here.'' And besides, the donkey looked like it hadn't eaten for days and Garnet wasn't sure if she was ready to be alone again.

indentin the beginning of his time in solitude behind the walls of the museum, chen took to memorizing facts and staring into the glass cases to imagine to world hundreds of years earlier. more than once, he even found himself speaking to the different stuffed animals and human mannequins, asking what they might think of the world, what all of their achievements meant if they were to find out what the world had come to. once, as a kid, chen's parents brought him to the museum and he had been instantly drawn to the towering dinosaurs and old bones, imagining the stegosaurus breaking through the glass barrier and entering their world. he thought of the world so far removed from his current reality, when humans were a distant, fleeting thought in the universe. if only their species had never been created in the first place, chen wondered, what then? he never would have existed, but neither would have the roving zombies on the other side of the wall, threatening his very existence. everything he did came with the undertones of fear, that each breath might be his very last. so, for weeks, he kept himself locked up in the past, before tragedy struck.
indentfor hours on end, he circled through the various exhibits and committed them to memory. for the first few days, he carried a map in his back pocket that had been left behind, before anyone knew that their way of living had come to an end. by the second day, the corners were folded over and part of the perforations had been torn, and by the fourth chen had a general idea of where everything was located. perhaps, in another time, he could have been a tour guide, able to list off a plethora of trivia and facts memorized from snapple caps for tourists to coo at. he would have been good at it, he thought.
indentthe kitchen had been stocked with food, half rotten, half fine to be eaten, and chen made use of his time in the museum to ensure that all exits were secured. when he first entered, he was sure to barricade the front door with the materials he found. a chair from behind the front desk, a canoe from an exhibit, a large bookshelf and clothing display from the gift shop. as the days passed, chen pushed more furniture in front of the entrances to keep the various zombies out and away, praying that he would be able to hold out until the crowd outside thinned long enough to let him go out and look for food and supplies when the museum's stockpile ultimately ran out. because he knew it would in a matter of time.
indentwhen he finally found himself too short on supplies for any sort of comfort, chen sat on the hard, cold museum floor in the shadow of the blue whale skeleton. the bones cast shadows onto the floor as chen sat and waited - waited for something, though he couldn't be sure exactly what. his sword rested at his side, and he hadn't let it leave his sight since he found it. there was a strange comfort in having it there, its metal shaded over but still sharp. it had been trusted by others before him, and he trusted it now, to keep him from harm when he went outside. a hollowness formed in the pi of his stomach, as he hadn't eaten in days, since he scraped a last meal from canned soup, saving a fair amount of food behind for emergencies only. from now on, he would have to begin scrounging for his next meal. even still, knowing what was waiting for him, what had killed the last of his friends, made the hollowness travel, and chen's muscles loosened until he was lying on his back, his arms stretched out, one leg bent at the knee and the other straight. when he closed his eyes, he saw delilah in the moments before her death, fighting for her life. he heard ollie, screaming louder than chen ever heard him speak, but delilah. chen missed delilah. they hadn't been great friends, and maybe she had never even thought of him as a friend, but she mattered to him. and now she was gone, he was horrendously alone. "it should've been you," he murmured towards the ceiling, up to the whale. he hoped the whale understood him.

indentthe next day, chen took his sword with him when he slipped out from the museum and into the early morning light through the side entrance. a quick scan up and down queen's gate showed a surprising lack of movement, and chen took his chance. through the twist of london's streets, he dodged into alleys at the sound of shuffling footsteps and waited until the groups of walkers passed him by before continuing through the city. along the way on his search for supplies, chen managed to kill a rabbit, and he had just settled down to clean the blood from his sword and stow the rabbit in his bag when he made out the noise of a shuffle and grunting from down the street to where he spotted a blonde girl struggling back against a walker, armed only with a spare brick she must have picked up from the side of the road. though he knew it couldn't be true, that he saw her die, chen couldn't help but find tell-tale similarities between the girl down the road and the friend he lost. chen saw her in a series of glimpses behind the walker as it lunged at her, and he saw the color of her hair, the set of her shoulders, so like delilah. he couldn't let her die again.
indent"hey!" chen called out when he stepped out into the street, making out the crunch of glass under his sneakers. almost immediately, the walker wheeled around to face him, and its hesitation gave the blonde girl the chance to duck away, out of reach and down the street in the opposite direction. when chen felt sure that she was safe, he also took off running, his shoes slapping against the pavement until he managed to get away from the walker. when he felt that he was a safe distance, chen slowed to a stop, looking back over his shoulder, then bending over to brace his hands on his knees and get his breath back. a chill raced down his spine at the sound of heavy breathing, ragged and thick, and chen raised his eyes just as a walker lumbered close, followed by another. pain seared through his arm and chen grit his teeth against the scream that threatened to tear at his throat.
indenthe pushed the walker back and it scrabbled to maintain its grip on him, though it failed and chen pulled his sword from the sheath at his hip, bringing it up and catching the walker that attacked him with a clean slice across its head. its body seemed to remain suspended in air before lurching to the side and onto the ground, dead. by that point, however, the first walker caught up and it joined the third to try and attack chen again, but stopped when a rock crashed on the ground nearby. chen caught sight of blonde hair and disengaged to catch up with the girl.
indentwhen he reached her, she took him by his good arm and pulled him along, leaving the walkers behind. "we gotta get to shelter before they call their friends," the girl said between puffs of breath. chen nodded his agreement, too stunned by the close encounter and the pain in his arm to say anything at first.
indentshe led the way down the street and around several looping corners until, at last, she pulled chen into an open doorway. a quick assessment of the open room showed that they were alone and chen shut the door, bracing a nearby chair against the handle. it was only when they were alone, the curtains drawn and space secure that the pair of strangers faced one another, and chen broke the silence. "thanks for coming back," he said, and the girl rolled her eyes. chen was sitting in a chair fitted with cracking leather, the girl positioned behind what appeared to be a front counter. upon a cursory inspection, chen couldn't tell exactly what the building was, though they appeared to be situated in a front lobby. the room beyond the counter was boarded up, impassable.
indentat chen's words, the girl merely shrugged. "we're even," she said simply, and chen nodded. already he could tell that she didn't seem the type to feel like she owed a debt to anyone, especially not a passing stranger. he helped her, she helped him in return. nothing to be gained or lost on either end, it seemed. then, when chen thought that they would continue in complete silence until the walkers had passed on, the girl sighed. "you're bleeding a lot. let me see if i have anything," she said, already moving to dig through her bag. in the meantime, chen looked to his arm and the drops that fell from his flesh onto the floor. the patchy carpet soaked up his blood, stemming only for a moment when chen put his sword back into the sheath and clasped his palm over the wound.
indentwith luck, the girl produced a pack of bandages and tossed them across the room to chen, who caught the. "i don't need you bleeding out and turning into a walker in here," she said simply as if as an explanation for her kindness, and chen merely shrugged as he dressed the wound. chen was aware of her watching him while he set about the wound, though he said nothing until it was finished.
indent"thanks again," he said, meeting her eyes, and she nodded slowly.
indent"what's up with the sword, you think you're a knight or something?" her tone was biting and hostile, though chen didn't blame her. it was a different world, after all, and one never knew another's true intentions unless it was a trial by fire. he saved her, she saved him and gave him bandages for his trouble, but that still didn't mean that she couldn't turn on him at any moment. the world had turned indescribably cruel, and no one could ever feel truly safe from harm.
indent"no, although i wish i was. i'm not much of a fighter, i'm still learning how to use it," he admitted with a shrug of his shoulders. the past few weeks had been spent in the open expanse of the lobby, practicing different jabs, different ways to swing the sword and aim for head-height. he'd been sloppy at first, unused to the weight and grip. absently, he pulled the bandage tight against his arm, secure, sure to slow the flow of blood and ward off infection.
indentthe girl scoffed and stepped out from behind the counter. chen looked up at her and she met his eyes when she laughed slightly. "so you're a sword-fighter who doesn't know how to fight with a sword. brilliant."
indent"i used to fence when i was in school," he said, further elaborating when the girl shot him a sharp look, clearly not buying his word. "no, really, i really liked this guy on the team. he was cute, and his one defining trait was that he was on the fencing team."
indent"that was his defining trait?" the girl asked. the longer they spoke, chen could see the way her muscles relaxed, felt his own body begin to settle. instead of feeling tense and on-edge, that she might move to kill him at any moment, chen couldn't help but find himself amused, both by his own story and her reactions to him.
indent"i later learned that he had no personality whatsoever," chen said with a shrug of his shoulders. when the girl burst out into a laugh, chen felt his face form a smile on its own accord and he leaned back in the chair, looking up at where she was leaning casually against the counter. "when i joined the team, he seemed so excited. i thought that he liked me back and was happy that we would be spending more time together. and believe me when i say that i was bad at fencing. i could barely wear the mask right, and that's supposed to be the easy part. so then he suggested that we stay after, so that he could help me. so there i was, thinking that he was trying to come up wit excuses and not seem obvious," chen continued to tell the story.
indent"oh no," the girl interjected. she rested her chin in the palm of her hand. chen smiled and she returned the expression.
indent"oh no," he parroted. "bryan - his name was bryan - came into the room and i was ready for the romance of my life, you know. i thought it would be cheesy and romantic, so imagine how confused i was when he started to list off different techniques of footwork and how to try and defend against a parry. and of course i went along with it, hoping that he was just nervous. after i spent another two hours fencing with him, he started to pack his things and i knew that i had to try and make a move. so i kissed him."
indentat that, the girl burst into another bout of giggles. her hand rose from her chin to cover her mouth, and chen allowed her the moment to catch her breath. when he lapsed into silence, however, she urged him on, "what happened next?" and chen obliged.
indent"it was a disaster, of course. it was just the smallest peck, but he was surprised and practically fled from the room. a few days later i apologized and said that i liked him. he said he was too busy for a relationship because he was too focused on his fencing and all that. he said something only the lines of 'chen, fencing is my life right now. i can't commit myself to someone else and also fence.' and it was all horridly tragic," chen finished, turning in his chair to peek outside the window onto the street. in the moments of silence, he realized that the walkers must have passed on.
indentwhen he passed to the girl that the coast was clear, she studied his face for a long moment before speaking quietly. "chen? i'm eloise." at that, chen hesitated for a moment before standing and reaching out his hand, which she shook. "do you live around here? i've been traveling for a while but it's not safe anymore. if you know somewhere, can i come with you?" she asked.
indentfor another long beat, chen studied eloise. she had the tell-tale marks of a survivor, all of the scars and bruises of someone who fought to stay standing. though they hadn't been speaking long, he felt a sense of kinship with her, that she was someone he could trust to sleep in the same room with. this was someone who could help him just as he could help her. "what do you think about museums?" he asked at last, not missing the way her eyes lit up. together, they left the small room through the door and began a jog down the street. when it seemed that they were completely alone, chen glanced at eloise over his shoulder. "that story," he said quietly, "i made a lot of that up just now. he joined the fencing team after i did, and i never kissed him. he stayed on the team for two weeks and then quit. i was actually good at fencing. but when i first started, i couldn't figure out the mask. that part was true."

indenteloise had been wary during the first few days that she lived in the museum with chen. together, they went out to scavenge for supplies and to look for foo, and it was during that time that they talked more. they swapped survival stories, about the time eloise managed to wait out a pack of walkers by camping out on a rooftop in the sun and rain for almost a week, drinking the rainwater she collected and rationing a handful of squashed and stale granola bars. in turn, she listened while chen talked about his time alone in the museum, how he had come to learn so much about volcanoes, followed by his suggestion to read about the blue whale skeleton. up until then, she still saw him as a bit of a threat. he had a sword and was stronger and taller than she was. he'd claimed the museum first and knew so many of its secrets. she kept her guard up while speaking, constantly reminding herself that he might see her as a guest, a liability.
indentthat is, until eloise found chen late one afternoon after scavenging for hours, sitting with his sword rested over his crossed legs in front of a stegosaurus skeleton. though her footsteps echoed clearly against the floor, signaling her arrival, chen didn't turn to greet her, and he shot her just a cursory glance when she stopped at his shoulder. "may i sit?" she asked, taking his nod and small smile as his permission. she expected him to say something, but chen remained quiet and eloise feared intruding in on his thoughts, opting instead to give him the peace and tried to stare at the arranged bones to see what had him so enraptured by it. after several long moments without revelation, eloise focused on the sound of chen's breathing, counting the seconds between each inhale and exhale and slowing her breaths to match his.
indentwhen chen finally did speak, his voice startled eloise, who had also become strangely used to the silence. speaking felt suddenly wrong. "sometimes i wonder what would have happened if we never existed. if the meteor or whatever never killed the dinosaurs. would they have become intelligent, do you think? would they have had to go through their own apocalypse?"
indent"i don't know," eloise said after a brief pause, unsure what answer chen wanted from her, if he even wanted an answer at all. when he offered a soft hum, however, eloise returned her gaze to the dinosaur and pulled her knees close against her chest. "when everything started happening, i remember my dad trying to get me and my brother out to safety. we were both so confused, and he was too. but i could tell he was trying to stay strong. my mom died early on and my dad said that everything that was happening was meant to happen. that it was something like balance. we messed up the earth, and the earth was getting back at us for it." a scab had formed between her knuckles the night before, and she picked at it now until it began to burn and bleed.
indent"do you believe that?" chen asked then, and eloise shrugged, looking down at the blood beading between her fingers.
indent"depends on the day. sometimes i do, sometimes i don't. i just know that we can't change what happened. it happened and here we are."
indentchen finally turned to look at her, and eloise faced him. "i want to change things," chen said, "too many people have died. what if we managed to get more people here? i was part of a group that was going to take buckingham palace. if we did that, we could change things."
indentthe sudden outburst brought eloise aback, not sure what she could possibly say. on one hand, it would be nice to go back to a time before the zombies stripped them all of their lives. on the other hand, she still just wanted to survive to see tomorrow. "we can't save everyone," eloise said.
indentchen nodded once and turned back towards the skeleton. "no," he agreed, "but i'd like to try." with that, he picked up his sword from his lap and stood. without speaking further, chen left the exhibit and left eloise in the shadow of the dinosaur, feeling increasingly small.

indentdespite the way their conversation in front of the stegosaurus ended, eloise found herself spending more time with chen in he museum. he showed her the different exits and how to check that the barricades were sturdy. he showed her where he had stockpiled food and supplies, and she noticed how he had set up several different spaces in the museum for more people to sleep. they had, for the most part, taken to staying until the blue whale skeleton, where chen seemed to gravitate towards, eloise following behind. more than once she spotted him lying on the floor and basking in its shadow, but he offered no explanation and she didn't ask any questions as to what he was thinking in those moments. from the outset, eloise felt that they shared the same wavelength, knowing when they needed space in different rooms, when it was a good time to talk, or when they both preferred sitting in silence. it was an easy few weeks, and eloise enjoyed chen's company.
indenton several occasions, eloise would sit and read a book from the giftshop when chen practiced with his sword, hacking invisible zombies. one time, when she finished with a book about the arctic, eloise sat back and watched chen at work, marveling at how he already seemed to improve from when they first met. when he set the sword down and drank from a bottle of water, eloise piped up, "you'll be a knight in due time," she said, and chen laughed, pointing the tip of the sword in her direction.
indent"and you'll be learning soon enough," he challenged, to which eloise shook her head.
indent"if you think i'd be good with that sword, you're even denser than i thought." together, their laughs echoed to the roof. indeed, the sword was better suited for chen, who was tall enough to match the blade's length. eloise had tried holding it once, but it was too long, too heavy, and not right for her. they both agreed that it made more sense for chen to use it - he was more practiced and better suited for the sword - while eloise used whatever makeshift weapon she could find on the outside, ranging from a piece of broken window to a brick. they made due, they got by.
indent"i wouldn't want to be a knight," chen said when he sat beside eloise.
indent"then what would you like to be instead?"
indentchen thought for a moment. "a prince," he decided. "not a king, but a prince. it has a better ring to it." eloise murmured her agreement, but the topic was soon lost as they moved on to speaking about where they would go to look for food that evening.
indentultimately, they decided that searching a nearby convenience store would be their best bet. if they found something to hold them over until the morning, they would have more time to travel in daylight to find other places to scavenge. and so they went, eloise leading the way by a block as she was smaller, less likely to be noticed, and chen following behind with the sword, faster and able to catch up to eloise in case of trouble. they hadn't made it further than a half-mile when they heard scuffling and a shout from around the corner. eloise looked back to chen, who raced forward to meet with her and they rounded the corner together just in time to see a man bash a walker's head with a brick. another walker was stumbling towards him, and eloise shouted a warning just in time. the man twisted around with the brick and the walker fell to the ground, dead. the man turned and eloise had the chance to get a good look at him.
indentthe man was tall - taller than chen, she could tell - and broad-shouldered. he was older as well, and eloie guessed that he was in his late-twenties to his thirties. even from a distance, she could see a scar running down the length of his forearm. despite his muscles, he appeared thin, like he hadn't eaten well in a fair bit of time. when he looked at the younger pair, he was assessing, appraising them until he settled on chen. "nice sword," the man said, "you know how to use it?"
indentat her side, eloise felt chen stiffen, unsure of how to respond to the stranger's question. if it were to come to a fight, eloise wasn't entirely sure if she and chen would be able to beat him. a hostile and desperate man was capable of a lot of things, they all surely knew. all the same, chen tilted his chin up slightly, his jaw set. "i do," he answered simply.
indentthe man studied them for a moment longer, possibly considering the likeliness of chen's statement. when it seemed that they might be stuck in a standstill, the man tossed the brick aside and raised his hands slightly. "i believe you. i'm not looking for any trouble. i've been looking for some people."
indent"we haven't seen many people around here," eloise cut in, and the man turned his eyes to her. she thought that he might speak, but he remained silent, and when eloise looked to chen, he merely nodded, encouraging her. she recalled his words from weeks earlier, when he said that he would try to save everyone. here was someone who appeared extremely capable of survival. if they wanted to help those who couldn't help themselves, they would need help from someone strong and able-bodied. they needed someone like the man across from them. "we haven't seen your people, but we can help you search for them."
indentthe man's eyebrows rose slightly and once more he glanced between eloise and chen. "you expect me to follow your orders? that's not really my game."
indent"we just want to help people, get britain back in order," chen said.
indent"you're trying to be a king, then?"
indent"he's not a king," eloise said, stepping in front of chen. chen went to follow after her, but she held out a hand to stop him. "he's a prince, because he's started our group and he'll lead us. he knows what he's doing. trust him, trust me."
indentthe man narrowed his eyes slightly but nodded slowly. "my name's jackson. i'll come with you, but i won't call you prince."
indent"then call me chen," chen said simply. "you don't have to call me a prince, but expect to follow me. because i'm the only one left with the original plan to reclaim london. trust me." at that, he turned back towards the museum and eloise followed in tow. when she caught up to his shoulder, she caught chen's sideways glance, his brow furrowed slightly. she knew that he was asking why, why she had done that. in return, she offered the slightly rise of her shoulders and tip of her head.
indent"because i trust you," she murmured under her breath, then turning back to jackson, who strode forward to catch up with chen and eloise.
