The ebony alpha stood over Gunner's curled body. He sighed as Kalta approached him. "You knew that he couldn't survive the cold burst we received. His coat was too short."
"Yes, but I didn't feel comfortable letting him sleep in the dens, especially with the kennel. I regret not getting any more information from him sooner. He took his secrets to the grave."
"Don't beat yourself up about it. I probably wouldn't have done anything differently myself if I were alpha. You were going to kill him anyway. He couldn't be trusted."
"But now we know little to nothing about the Rose Grass kennel. When will their next attack be? How many of them are there? Are they even still lurking on the outskirts of our territory? He was one of them and he knew more answers than he was giving." Garland began pacing near the body.
"The only thing that can be done now is to keep patrolling the borders and keep an eye out."
"For how long though!" boomed Garland. "I'm supposed to protect this kennel. I can't do that if I don't know what I'm up against."
Kalta rubbed against Garland, trying to calm him. "Don't worry so much. We will be fine. We have the trainees who are almost done with their training. It's winter now so more dogs will want to find shelter from the cold. We could take them in and strengthen our numbers that way too."
"How can we trust them? Any new dog could be a spy."
"That's when you use your intuition. Everything will be alright. You can count on that."
Garland scowled, still uneasy about the situation. The Rose Grass kennel has been very quiet recently. He knew something big was going to happen. Garland strode off and told Niko to send some of his dogs to get rid of the body. Truskett and Willow were instructed to drag Gunner off the territory. They were surprised how light he was and how skinny he had become. He was also covered in injuries from the kennel beating on him. But no one mentioned anything to Garland.

While Garland was thinking things over, Natiri walked up to him. She asked "I have a request to ask. Chi is our only healer and it is getting harder for him to move around. I ask that another dog would accompany him sometimes on his searches. Or he could be assigned a trainee. I know Stark is of age. So maybe-"
"Who told you that you could talk to me?" Garland growled.
"Uh, no one. I just thought-"
"If you have concerns, then you bring it up with your Commander. If they see fit, then they will inform me of any issues. Then my time won't be wasted listening to you blabber about your brother! If he is so worried and lonely then he can bring up the matter himself. He's a Commander for the ancestor's sake! You need to learn your place! I've never had any dog disrespect me so much to ask for a personal request. If you don't start acting like your rank, you'll be run off this territory. Now leave me be before you become any more useless."
Natiri tried to hold back her shock and tears. "Yes, Garland. I'm sorry to disturb you." She trotted away with her tail between her legs.
Chi was organizing the herbs and clawing at the ground. He mumbled "Hmm, with the ground being frozen already then it'll be hard to find any berries." He smelled the scent of his sister and turned. Though he could not see her, he smiled. "Hello Natiri."
Natiri rubbed her head into Chi's shoulder. She whined.
"What's wrong? Why are you upset?"
"I tried to voice your request for a trainee, but Garland wouldn't hear it from me. He told me that to learn my place or I'd be kicked out of the kennel."
"Don't worry about that. If you leave, then I will also leave. I wouldn't let you go alone. I am your brother of course. I wouldn't let anything happen to you. And if I leave, then they will be without a healer."
"I'm sorry. I just thought I could help you out a bit. You've helped me for longer than I can remember. You practically raised me when we got separated from Mom and Dad. But I shouldn't have spoken out of my rank."
"No, thank you for being so concerned for me. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you keeping me sane all these years. And I have been more cautious since I was attacked and I do wish for some company on my herb hunts. I will talk with Garland myself. It's my issue anyway. Thank you for trying though."
"I wouldn't talk to him anytime soon though. I made him have a sour mood right now."
"I'm sure you weren't the one to put him in it." Chi smiled and his white muzzle reminded Natiri how many years have passed with him.

Braisle heard the sound of whining and he tipped his head. The gentle moan of pain came again and the hound followed the sound, interested in finding its source. He stepped through the brush and a coonhound greeted him. A very upset, obviously furious at his presence, coonhound. Braisle smile and cocked a brow, "Hey, darlin', you obviously aren't in pain, who is?"

The red-tick snarled on response. A weak voice spoke from behind her, "Calm down, Maple, I don't think he's here to hurt us or he already would've - hes a giant." The coonhound continued to snarl, not daring to take her eyes off of Braisle.

The wolfhound winked and ran his tongue over his lips, "At least someone has some common sense."

The speaker limped through the brush and came to a halt next to Maple. She whispered a few hushed words into the coonhound's ear and the aggravated fae slowly lowered her snarl though her tail remained upright, ready to defend her friend if necessary. The Laika turned to Braisle next and offered a gentle smile and a bow of her head, "Forgive her, she's not accustomed to strangers. We've been traveling for a long time now." The leg she was using to hold all her weight suddenly gave out and she hit the ground with a heavy thud. Maple turned with a gasp, instantly lowering the injured fae's level.

Braisle took a step forward and lowered his maw - his normally cocky and suave voice came out softly, more of a caress then a flaunt, "Whatever happened to you, i'm sure our medic, Hiri, could help."

Maple turned suddenly with a snarl. The first words Briasle ever heard her say sounded then, "You think we'd trust a giant oaf like you?!" She demanded with a threatening step forward, "My mate," she gestured toward the Liaka, "Was attacked. Probably by some of your people." The other fae lifted her head and Maple spun around in a heartbeat, "Hush, Kaveri."

Kaveri shook her head to the best of her ability, "Maple, we won't just make random accusations - we saw those brutes, if they're in their group we'll run then." She winced as she attempted to lift her weight again, "Besides," she smiled softly, "I could use the help."

The trio made it back to the precious tunnels of the Crystalline Militia and Braisle held back a sigh of relief. Finally, he could be rid of that snarling, mangy hound. "Hiri!" He shouted down the tunnels, perhaps a tad too eagerly. The silken windhound appeared with a small scowl on her face. Her eyes scanned the trio and she audibly sighed. Without a word she turned and began the descent to her medicine storage. Braisle turned toward Maple and Kevari and gestured toward where Hiri had vanished, "That's your cue." The duo hesitated before following very slowly after the fae.

Once the two had vanished Braisle finally let the sigh that he trapped in his lungs out and hung his head. After a heartbeat he turned with the intent to finish his patrol. The behemoth of a hound paused mid-step as he noticed a twinkling of two deep amber eyes peering out from the brush. Braisle let his classic smirk creep onto his features. The smell of the origin floated to Braisle and it was distinctively male. Luckily, Braisle wasn't picky, "Lost, handsome?" He called out toward the shining eyes.

A rhodesian ridgeback stepped out with a laugh, "How kind of you to assume I'm handsome." He bowed his head and flashed an eerily similar, cocky grin, "Altair."

"Braisle." The hound offered as he, likewise, bowed his head. This Altair figure was quite the striking one - muscles bulged under his thin, gleaming pelt and his eyes were a beautiful amber, much akin to Braisle's own. "I'm not very far off though," he smoothly continued as he took a step forward, "what do you say you help me finish this patrol I'm on and then we can find a secluded area of this massive forest for ourselves for the night?" He asked with a sly wink.

Altair grinned and released a gentle chuckle into the air. He tipped his head to the side and offered an apologetic wag of his tail, "Maybe in another life I'd love to but this time around you're barkin' up the wrong tree." He gestured to the tunnels behind Braisle, "Is that where..." but Braisle had already stopped listening. His jaw was hanging slightly open as he stared the ridgeback in a mixture of envy, bafflement and shock. Another dog with a vocabulary as slick and charming as his own? What world was this? Had he gone back in time? Perhaps forward.

Altair was suddenly nudging Braisle's shoulder with his paw, "You alright, bud?"

Briasle suddenly burst into hearty, tear-inducing laughter. He lowered himself into a laying position and placed his snout between his paws, still laughing so hard it was difficult to catch a breath. When finally he looked up at Altair, his eyes were watery and a massive grin was on his lips, "oh golly, I think we might have a wonderful relationship on our paws."

Altair cocked a brow as he stood next to the now laying behemoth and as he opened his mouth, the Miltia's infamous trio appeared from the brush. Kiyja, obviously stressed, stomped forward as Juezin and Lesk came tumbling forward in a wrestling ball of yips and snarls. Kiyja locked eyes with the duo and behind her depths Altair could see a plead for aid. Braisle chuckled and before Altair could offer help, two more canines appeared from the brush - a scrawny little pup and full grown male. Thamin made eye contact with Braisle and gestured toward the pup, "Luka's brother, Akim."

Braisle flashed a toothy grin and gestured toward his own new-comer, "My new friend, Altair."

"Oh, brother," Thamin half chuckled, "I'm sure Amaryllis will be thrilled."

Amaryllis paced in her own private section of the wood, a small clearing near the border. Kronos' scent still lingered making her stomach toss and turn. She felt queasy at the smell, a mixture of overwhelming joy and anxiety that washed over her every time she saw his capturing features. Now she carried his legacy. She stopped pacing and eyed her gut where she knew pups were now squirming toward life - the thought only made her even more queasy. The hound stopped and planted herself on her haunches, "Why?" She whispered to herself, why was she so terrified? No, not terrified. She couldnt put her tongue on the word she was searching for. She was fearful, yes, but also elated. This would bring the alliance between the two groups even closer, it would bring her and her beloved closer. After all, what was there to fear when she had Kronos on her side? Her queasiness began to settle at the thought of Kronos watching over her, ensuring her safety and ensuring the safety of their pups. She dared anyone to stand against her.

A rustle sounded behind her, snapping her out of her daydream and she whipped around, snarl on her lips. Hiri's apathetic form emerged and with a gentle roll of her eyes she said, "Calm down, Amaryllis, it's just me."

Amaryllis had never found a fondness in the Militia's medic and while she dropped her snarl, her words dripped with venom, "What is it you want?"

"I came," Hiri snarled, "to find you alone and let you know that I'm aware of the secret you're hiding."

Panic momentarily gripped Amaryllis as she eyed the fae. She hadn't even stopped to consider the heavy smell of Kronos on the breeze, or her massive pawprints left indented in the mud, "What are you talking about?"

Hiri gaze her a disappointed glare, "I'm not stupid, Amaryllis, you carry Kronos' pups and I dont think that should be a secret. Your Militia deserves to know that you're carrying the pups of our neighbors and that we are in an alliance." She eyed Amaryllis, who seemed hesitant, "Do they not?"

The commander stared at Hiri for a long moment, taking in every word the medic said. She had a point, "Next moon," she vowed, "I shall announce the news next moon."

The medic shook her head, "They'll all know by then. You must do it now."

Amaryllis picked her snarl up again and took a threatening step toward Hiri, "I said," she spat as she took another step, "Next moon. I, am commander, Hiri, not you."

Hiri bowed her head with a gentle sigh, "As you wish."

Tucked tightly into the corner of a small kennel, the small border collie, Venus, licked tenderly at a bloody leg. It was a decent-sized cut, the cause of an unfortunate incident with one of the circus’ resident lions. Horrid creatures, those felines were, especially around dogs. It was not her first quarrel with one of them, in fact, within the first week she was introduced in the circus she was attacked by one of them, earning her a rather noticeable indent in her right ear.
xxx Still, she felt sympathy for them. They were wild creatures, meant for the untamed savanna. Yet here they were, trapped in cages too small, only to be let out for shows or training, where they were beaten and whipped. It was a miserable way of life for any animal.
xxx “Venus,” a familiar voice called to her from across the kennel. It was Akelia, the battle-worn Belgian Malinios that Venus had befriend a few moons ago. “We need to get moving, now.”
xxx Her tone resonated a authority that made her tentatively rise to her feet, head cocked with confusion. “What do you mean? What’s going on?”
xxx “Do you smell that?” She watched as Venus lifted her muzzle to the air, black nose twitching as she sifted through the thick scent of rust and old dog food, a look of panic worn across her face as she detected the scent.
xxx “Smoke.”
xxx “Where there is smoke, there’s bound to be fire. And judging by the fact that this place is run by uncaring, selfish humans, we’re going to have to find a way to get out by ourselves.” She paced the kennel, her piercing amber eyes searching for any way out.
xxx Venus made attempts to look around too, her chocolate eyes landing on the decaying wood on each side of the kennel door. “Do you think we could break through? I might not be the strongest but I th—”
xxx Akelia charged to the door, paws slamming against the old wood, the impact causing the wood to splinter and snap. She then swiftly turned around, using her back paws to kick once again at the door, which responded with a groan before swinging open. Akelia simply trotted out, looking behind her shoulder with an amused expression, “You were saying?”
xxx Venus rolled her eyes before walking out the confinement’s of the kennel. “I hate you,” she said with a little growl, trying to hide a smile.
xxx “Oh please, you know you love me,” Akelia winked, flashing a rare, lopsided grin. Her winning grin was short-lived, as the sound of panicked whines cut through the pair’s conversation. The two turned, seeing the row of fellow canines that were lined up in kennels. Venus met Akelia’s eyes, and the two shared a moment of brief silence before nodded to eachother and going to assist others.
xxx The smoke had quickly become more apparent, and it had begun to sting the border collie’s nose and eyes as she went to help free others. Venus had found getting dogs out was much easier from the outside, as it was a simple procedure of removing the latch from the outside of the kennel. She had seen workers at the circus do it on numerous occasions, and had picked up on it almost instantaneously. Her nose touched the rusted latch, and in a quick motion she unhooked it, letting the three dogs from inside the kennel push the door open. There eyes were alight with panic, and Venus smiled softly, her tone reassuring as she spoke. “You must leave now, find any escape, try to stick together. Now go.”
xxx The dogs nodded and quickly bolted away, leaving Venus to return to freeing other kennels. With both her and Akelia helping out, the kennels quickly emptied out, and as Venus reached the final kennel, she was greeted by a low hiss. Two lionesses, cramped tightly in a kennel, glared at her through metal bars, a vicious glint in their golden eyes. Sandy lips peeled back to reveal blood-stained fangs, a truly powerful set of teeth that fit the felines well. They could kill her if it was not for the bars separating them.
xxx But Venus seemed not to care as she unlatched the latch. She felt the taut muscle of Akelia brush against her side, who held a protective stance, holding her breath as she uttered a low growl, watching the two lions press against the kennel, swinging it open. The pair stared at the dogs, eyes narrowed.
xxx And then, they walked away. Disappearing in a thick blanket of smoke.
xxx Akelia muttered something under her breath, something between the lines of how recklessly stupid Venus was and how amazingly brave she was. Venus beamed, tail swaying softly before a large creaking noise disrupted them. They looked up to see a large beam beginning to fall, alight with vicious flames that greedily lapped at the wood.
xxx “Run!” Akelia snapped, shoving Venus as they ran blindly into the smoke, narrowly missing the beam as it fell down, flames quickly spreading. Venus’ heart drummed loudly in her chest, threatening to leap out her mouth as she spluttered and coughed, trying to stop the burning sensation in her lungs.
xxx She ran swiftly alongside Akelia as they made their escape, navigating through long hallways and dead-ends. The border collie almost howled in relief as they turned a corner and saw two opened doors, leading outside. Venus pushed herself to go further, adrenaline coursing through her veins as she sprinted past the doors, relief surging through her as she felt cool dirt beneath her feet and let the glow of the moon bathe her ash-covered coat. Only when they reached the edge of the meadow that the circus sat on did the two stop, heaving sighs of exhaustion and relief.
xxx They sat in silence, watching the fire slowly consume the circus, devouring it in hellish flames. The silence was not short-lived, though it was comfortable.
xxx “Now what?” Akelia suddenly asked, turning to Venus.
xxx Venus lifted her head from her paws, looking up at the moon as she spoke. “My mother told me stories of a tribe of dogs that lived long ago. They had no humans to chain them, instead lead by primal instincts,” there was a brief pause, “they were called the Eriu Coven. And I, Venus Enchantra, intend to bring them back.”
