❀ Spring ❀

winter was harsh and unforgiving, claiming the lives of many animals that were too weak to make it through the chilling months. prey had been scarce for so long, yet with gentle rays of warm sunlight beginning to break through the gray clouds, spring had begun. the grass is now growing greener, small flower buds are forming and there are tiny leaves sprouting along branches. prey are crawling out from their dens, making hunting much easier.

in the depths of the kappanuit desert of arizona, there is the kadigal tribe. this tribe is created
by a young, inexperienced belgian malinois named morgan. morgan is a outcast in the kappanui
t desert, recently departing from his travelling group for a brand new life where he can do anyt
hing he want. morgan left his travelling group due to having a dispute with the leader, andes, a
disagreeable boerboel that had been giving him hell during his life there. finally getting enough
of it, the youngster sneaked his way out of their sight at night when they were in out hunting to
gether, morgan managed to get away without any problem.

the kappanuit of arizona, where he was born and raised, is a large desert with tall plateaus and
tough terrain. luckily, dogs born there have adapted to the toughness of the desert. kappanuit i
s just like any other desert, completely scarce and lacking water. dogs claw at cacti to drink the
water stored inside of it, but it sometimes leaves spines in their mouths. dogs who decide not t
o risk this travel far and wide just for a drink of water, those who don't know where to go to usu
ally end up dehydrated or dead. luckily for morgan, he has found a haven for him to stay at. thi
s haven is near the high plateaus and is blocked from three sides, there is only one opening. this
domain is called the three peaks because of the plateaus. there is a lot of brush and foliage abo
ut in three peaks, this allowing small mammals and reptiles to hide within the undergrowth. the
re could be mule deer, but it is only occasional when they step foot there.

morgan and the dogs of kappanuit have grown up believing in superstitions, rituals, and other th
ings. for example, dogs of kappanuit sometimes collect the feathers of various birds, mostly unc
ommon ones that they have not seen before. they do this because they think it will give them go
od luck, but some also think that it doesn't have an effect on anything whatsoever.

Echo trotted happily over to Denali’s den. She felt her heart thump loudly. This could one of two ways. Success, or crushing failure. She swallowed and entered his den. “Hey, Denali!” She yipped quickly “I know you just got back from a patrol and training session. But I was wondering if you might mind coming with me on a hunt? Maybe looking for some birds?” Her tail swished over her back, waiting for his answer. Denali shook out his thick coat. “I don’t know.” He said cautiously “Remember what Hawthorn said? There’s a bear nearby.” Echo tilted her head and gave a sweet smile. “I promise we'll be careful.” She said softly “And we don’t have to get too far from camp. Hawthorn came from the west, right? We could hunt in the east if it will make you feel better.” It took a few moments before Denali nodded and the two exited the den and went on their trip.

Ari licked her paws, trying to rid them of the mud they were caked in. “Kade could’ve taken time to a grassier clearing. Or at least one that wasn’t filled with mud.” She huffed pointedly. Hawthorn gave out a quick chuckle. “Sorry you got mud on your pretty fur.” He apologized sarcastically, nudging her with his shoulder. His fur was bushed out to the max, trying to block the chilly early spring wind that was trying to invade his bubble of warmth. When he was with his mother, she had always wrapped around him and made sure he was nice and safe and warm. Sadness pierced his heart. It had been 2 moons since her death, but it still stung to think about her. Thankfully, Ari had joined the Kennel around the same time as he did. She was a bit older than he was but they hit it off quickly and she was the best friend a pup could ask for. Ari shook her paw, splattering re-wettened mud onto the ground. “Maybe if I washed it off in the stream it would come off quicker.” She murmured, more to herself than to her buddy. But Hawthorn still rolled his eyes. “You know Denali won’t let us near the streams. Not with all the snowmelt flooding them.” He reminded her, looking up “But I’m sure once it rains, which by the looks of the sky will be soon, you could jump around in some puddles.” Ari blinked at him. “You realize that puddles make mud. Which is the thing I’m trying to avoid, right?” She said blatantly, pinning her folded ears slightly back. Hawthorn shrugged. “Just a suggestion. Back to licking it is, then!” Ari gave a large annoyed sigh and walked away to their den, leaving Hawthorn snickering alone.
