The black and white tenderpaw skipped through the forest, her tail wagging with pleasure as the warm spring air shined along her fur. "Bear, hurry up! All the prey are going to go back into their dens if we don't get to good hunting grounds in time." She barked, pausing momentarily to look back at the big Karelian Bear Dog trotting behind her. Letting out a huff of annoyance, the dog let out a small growl. "They're going to go back into their dens because of your heavy paws shaking the forest floor. Starling, you need to take a moment to breathe. Lets stop here." He instructed, sitting down.
"Stop here? But.. this isn't a very good spot for prey. I can hardly smell anything. We should be catching prey for the rest of the Lights." Starling barked, her spotty legs itching with an anxious urge to continue into other the deeper parts of the forest. By now, she had realized that arguing her mentor would get her no where, and it was best to just wait and see what he had planned next. I'm already twelve months old.. I should be an Irontooth by now. Just suck up to him for today. "Okay, I give in, what's the lesson for today?" She asked, head tilting.

Dove let out an exhale as she woke up, shaking bits of moss from her fur as she stepped from her nest and into the opening of camp, eyes landing on the scrappy male that had appeared at the edge of the territory the night before. Never had their ancestors waited so long to grace her wishes, and when they did they had sent her.. half a dog. She had tried to hide her surprise when she had first met him, though he seemed to pick it up in her eyes immediately. "Trout, how are you enjoying things so far?" She asked, heading over to him slowly. The Leader had been making an effort to make the small dog feel welcome, as she could tell he had received a few disappointed glances from some pack members - especially Slate. The broad husky had glared at Trout as soon as he came into camp, muttering something about a 'weak mouth to feed'. The small dog didn't seem to mind, and welcomed Dove's arrival with a cheerful grin. "Morning! I'm settling in just fine. I've taken to Raven a bit, she's very kind and has a whole lot of stories to share. I think the pups are quite fond of me too." His eyes trailed over to the black furred dog as she sat outside the Nursery, her three pups playing with a wad of moss. "I'm sure she is grateful for the help. Would you like to go on a hunting patrol today? Buck is about to lead one right now. It might help give you a better sense of our territory too." She explained, watching as he seemed to light up with joy. "Oh, yes please! I've been itching to carry my weight around here. I'll head over to Buck now, thank you!"
Watching him stumble away towards the small gathering of dogs, Dove felt a wave of shame come over her. How dare I question our ancestors for sending this dog to us. We are lucky to have him.

Denali pushed his paws into his ears. Ever since the two dogs had joined him, there had been non-stop arguing. He had found Kade and Sadik together, but there was no way that they were friends. Perhaps Denali’s choice of making Kade his Head Advisor had stirred up some tension between the two, but the noise the two caused had bugged him day and night. He stayed in his den, waiting for the two to leave for their daily duties. Finally, their jabbering faded over the outcrops and beneath the trees. Denali just hoped that they shut up long enough to come back with decent prey. Sighing, he rolled into his side, blinking at the stone den walls. He flicked his tail and noticed how alone he was. His den, all dark and cold. And he desperately wanted someone to share it with. Of course, he couldn’t force a female to become his mate. But he prayed that the two dogs he sent out would come back with someone willing to love him.

Lindon was woken up to a sharp gasp coming from the nursery, he knew instantly what was happening and ran out of the Irontooth dens and to the nursery. However he was stopped by the other pup-mother, Dusty. "whats going on?" he asked desperately. In response Dusty shook her head gently "don't worry, shes alright" she said kindly "Zaria is there now helping her deliver her puppies. Why don't you go do something productive, like hunt?" she gave him a gentle look "We need one last good hunt from you before you get distracted by the pups.

Cal padded out of his den yawning as he shook away his exhaustion. It was early but no one could sleep with a pup-mother in labor. He looked over at the worried Lindon and signaled him over. Lindon obeyed and came "go gather Varian and Julius for a hunt" Cal suggested. Lindon dipped his head in respect and went to his two friends.

xxxxxxSpring had made a beautiful comeback, but the swamps rarely showed any signs of its sudden appearance. No flowers bloomed among this dreadful sight, but rather dangers arouse from it – floods. Ever since the snow melted away, and the common rainfall of spring began to fall quite often, the waterways among the swamps rose and flooded many regions of the territory; some being toward the south, and other regions around Vufurd Channel. The river had widened due to the runoff and rain that poured into its cool waters, where it then fed into waterways of the swamp that it connected to. The amount of water that had arrived in The Hidden’s territory was astounding.
xxxxxxBut to Aqer, this was no fascination - this was one more thing for him to worry endlessly about. The amount of rain that tortured his pack from time to time with its relentless, pelt-pounding droplets, really weren't something that he wanted to be fascinated about. He had other troubles to handle, anyway, and rain was not one of them. With his kennel growing constantly before his eyes, Aqer really had to buckle-down and think long and hard over his decisions and actions. He now had an entire group of dogs looking up to him as a holy figure, of some sort, and he needed to consistently prove to them that he was worthy of this position. The brute could not even sacrifice one thought to silly things such as; how much rain fell today?
xxxxxxThis particular day started off rather normal, and just according to the daily routine that most of the dogs had engraved in their brain by then. Several dogs still roaming among the camp spent their time socializing, or enjoying a quick snack before it was their turn to leave and contribute to the kennels well-being. But, just as normal, the patrols sent out throughout the day would normally encounter something unusual while they explored the swamp. Although having been established in their territory for some time now, the kennel's scent and border-markings had yet to ward off some of the dogs that approached or wandered into their territory. A wanderer could sense through just a smell if there were many to fear, or not. And as of now, there really weren't that many of them. Only eleven. Not a single dog could be sacrificed with numbers still small, as every single dog, no matter rank or age, contributed to their survival.
xxxxxxAs the warm sun rose above, shinning through the trees of the swamp in small patches overhead, a commotion began to rise among the camp. A patrol had returned from their morning duties, but they weren't alone. Aqer sensed the rising commotion outside from within his den, and decided he should head out to address this patrol. Whatever it be, he knew he would be needed to calm the senses of the bystanders once it was all over anyway, as the dogs among The Hidden could be rather standoffish to newcomers, or rather new-things in general. As he stepped out, all heads turned and their eyes locked upon him, not daring to look away. The sudden silence of the once chattering canines made the atmosphere turn and feel rather ominous. What had stirred the group in the first place?
xxxxxx"May I speak with the eykyu, please." He called out, eyes scanning the patrol-group. He didn't notice anything out of the normal, at least not in that moment. He waited a few seconds before a dog, Oppia, weaved through the crowd and joined before him. She looked to be in fine condition, with no evidence of a fight or of injuries. "What is going on?" He demanded sharply, his eyebrows furrowed slightly.
xxxxxx"Olo'," She addressed the brute, dipping her head in a show of respect. "we picked up a wanderer on our way heading back from the hunting grounds." She informed him. Quickly, before the brute could snap at her once more, she rushed to cram in another statement: "She isn't of any trouble, sir, and she has proven to be without a threat. I think we can trust this newcomer." The brute remained unfazed, before he tipped his head to the side in confusion. "Okay?" He murmured, without a single worry. "Anything else?"
xxxxxxSlightly confused and surprised by Aqers reaction, Oppia remained silent for a few moments before she managed to answer his last question. "Drusus did manage to step in a human-made trap, though." She sighed. This got more of a reaction out of the brute, and he straightened himself slightly as she finished. "What are you waiting for? Get the brute to the tiretu fast! We do not need to lose a skilled tsamsiyu like him." Oppia nodded at this, and began to turn away before the brute caught her attention once more with a sharp demand. "And bring that female to me right away, as you should have done as soon as you walked into this camp."

winter was harsh and unforgiving, claiming the lives of many animals that were too weak to make it through the chilling months. prey had been scarce for so long, yet with gentle rays of warm sunlight beginning to break through the gray clouds, spring had begun. the grass is now growing greener, small flower buds are forming and there are tiny leaves sprouting along branches. prey are crawling out from their dens, making hunting much easier.

atlas eyed the rogues with a vague sense of wariness, though it didn't show in his posture; he held himself high, ears angled forward and jaws parted as he panted slightly from the sun beating down against his dark pelt. earlier that morning, he, euro, alaska, and queenie had hunted, and now atlas and euro had returned to where the rogues were, along with aegis and holt, bringing their prey along to prove that joining the kennel would provide more food than the threesome could possibly hope to find on their own.

"we have food," atlas told the rogues, his deep voice echoing between the chasm of two crumbled buildings - most of the skyscrapers in the city looked like they were slouching, leaning against one another or tilting precariously to the side. he gazed at the apparent leader of the group, a siberian husky with a tan forehead and a white mask, her piercing blue eyes sharp and clever as she twisted her ears towards the prey, her stomach giving a lurch at the thought. the rogues had seemed angry when the kennel dogs had first approached, but now their hackles had lowered, tongues running across their muzzles as they contemplated the offer. "and we've got shelter," atlas continued, his tail twitching slightly. aegis, holt, and euro were behind him, all three eyeing the rogues warily. every dog in the party was large and muscular, from atlas's tall, thick build to aegis's solid brick-wall body, holt's wiry base with agility lying beneath his thick fur to euro's lanky body that packed a lot of strength into such a thin canine.

the fae eyed, her nose shifting slightly as she scented the air for danger. "i'm noira," she finally said, her voice soft and silky, the obvious manner of a canine who'd spent many moons living as a house pet, spoiled and getting all of the attention they could ever want. "and this is puck," her tail angled towards the australian shepherd who paced behind her, a soft whine escaping his throat at the sight of the prey. he was thin, ribs showing from beneath his pelt, and atlas felt a flash of sympathy for the smaller dog. "and bishop." the german shepherd at her side said nothing, his posture reflecting atlas's rigidness as he peered at the larger shepherd. he, along with noira, appeared well-fed, their pelts shining sleekly and their muscles taut under fur. puck, however, must have stayed at his former home for a long time, waiting for his humans to return, before finally relenting and joining the pair. it happened often, atlas knew, the dogs who were just so sure that their owners would return, but, alas, it never happened, leaving them hungry and lonely and mournful.

"noira," atlas dipped his head in greeting, twitching his whiskers in acknowledgement of her introcutions. "if you're willing, the wall street wolves would love to have all of you."

a sharp yip broke through the silence of the subway cars, though no dog stirred to address it; atlanta and miami tangled in a heap on the floor, teeth tugging on ears and paws kicking at one another, puppy-fierce growls escaping the struggle. athena lounged on a pair of subway seats, her paws stretched before her, havana in the crook of her tummy, watching her siblings passively. athena's gaze held nothing but fondness, the edge of her maw raised in a soft smile. she'd named her pups based on signs that she'd seen when she'd lived with her human, a young man who strapped athena into a harness whenever they went out, relying on her to guide him through the harshness of the city, to the bustling building where what seemed, in athena's mind, to be giant, flying cars departed and returned, people filing onto and off of them at regular intervals. her boy had gone there often, always to board one of the flying cars, athena allowed to perch in the seat beside him. they would visit with an older couple who greeted him warmly, sneaking athena snatches of food under the table, petting her with their feet and letting her up into the bed with her boy at night. the airport, as she'd later learned it was called, was always busy with flashing signs and names scrawled across boards; orlando, los vegas, houston. miami, atlanta, and havana were simply her favorites - they'd been present on the signs almost every time her and the boy went, and, in athena's opinion, they had a lovely ring to them, and sometimes she would repeat them in her head, humming thoughtfully over the soft vowels of havana and the sharp sounds of miami.

now, though, she drew her tongue over havana's head, smoothing her fur down. "you don't want to play with them?" she asked, her voice dripping with contentment. havana turned to peer at her mother. "they're too rough," havana answered, her puppy-voice a higher pitch than athena's. [color=#6D7B8D]"atlanta always bites my ears too hard, and miami pushes me down a lot." she shrugged slightly. "that's okay, though, mum," she grinned up at her mother for a moment. "i like being with you, anyways."

in a traincar further down, thaddeus and bane proved that not only puppies liked to wrestle; the large irish wolfhound had snagged bane by the scruff and was tugging him down, a growl rumbling loudly through his chest. bane, smaller but more thickly-built, writhed in his grip, jerking to the side quickly, escaping the trap of teeth and slobber. he skittered backwards, having to gaze up to meet thaddeus's eyes with a grin. "awh, com'on," thaddeus spoke in his deep, thickly-accented voice ( his human had been from some far-off country, ire-something, bane recalled. ). he was smiling, though, a wry expression that matched bane's. he stepped closer, and with a flash bane leaped to the seats that lined the train car, using them as a sort of springboard to pounce onto thaddeus's shoulders, snagging his scruff and knocking him from his paws. "gotcha," bane announced proudly, his words muffled by the mouthful of wiry fur that he gripped tightly, but not hard enough to draw blood or cause pain. thaddeus let out a long groan, his chin against the floor of the subway. [color=#6D7B8D]"awright, awright, ge' off, you're crushin' me," he puffed out a breath, feigning exertion. "i'm not that heavy," bane protested, cuffing thaddeus over the ear with a paw before stepping away, his chest held high with pride at finally having bested the larger brute.

apollo had escaped the stuffy underground, though it really wasn't that stuffy, what with the gaping holes in the ceiling of the tunnels that allowed plenty of light to filter in. he was just claustrophobic, really, and being in closed quarters made him itchy, made him feel like tiny mice were scrabbling at the inside of his stomach, nausea piercing through him sharply. now, though, stretched against the edge of a once-beautiful fountain just outside the tunnel entrance, he soaked in the sun, the sound of water trickling slowly from the top tier of the fountain acting as a sort of soothing white-noise to his relaxation. the sound of pawsteps stirred him, one of his eyes flicking open as he eyed the curly-furred brown fae that approached. hestia leaped easily onto the edge of the fountain beside him, her tail wagging lighty. "apollo, napping? again? it's more likely than you think," hestia chuffed out a soft laugh as she stepped into the pool of water, pennies and dimes and quarters shifting under her paws, catching the light and gleaming against the concrete bottom of the fountain. "aw, come on, i'm not napping," apollo protested, shooting her a look of mock offense. he and hestia had a sort of easy banter that flowed between them, a friendship that was comfortable for both parties. the fact that is was a friendship, though, shot a pang of longing through apollo. hestia was quite beautiful, in his opinion, and her bubbly demeanor and languid temperment made him like her even more fiercely. he lifted his head completely from his paws, watching her wade through the artificial pond, her tail swishing cheerily. her favorite thing was water, he'd once told her, and it was evident in the way she kicked up arcs of clear liquid, snapping at it midair, grinning. "come on in, the water's fine," she dropped into a play stance, the water up to her chin, her eyes flashing with amusement. "i'm not that great of a swimmer," apollo shrugged slightly. "it's, like, to my stomach! you don't have to swim, birdbrain," she huffed at him, though her cheer had not diminished. she cupped a pawful of water, and splashed the brute, her laugh echoing across the plaza as she bounded away through the water, placing the pillar of the fountain between her and apollo.

apollo gasped sharply as the water hit him, his pelt immediately soaking up the water, trying to hide his grin of amusement. "i'll get you for that," he warned, standing and stepping delicately into the water, wading slowly, quietly, until they were both on either side of the pillar. hestia was letting of a gasp of giggles, trying to stifle her laughter, unaware of the presence just pawsteps away. with a sharp snarl of play, apollo whipped around the pillar, leaping onto hestia and pinning her in the water. her head was, of course, still above water, and apollo grinned down at her. "that," he told her, a laugh bubbling from his chest despite his fake-seriousness. "was very rude."

reuben's blue-and-orange eyes were unsettling sometimes, andy thought as he trotted after the taller canine, his puppy-feet wide and clumsy against the rubble that littered the streets. his wrinkles kept falling to obscure his eyes, and oftentimes he had to shake his pelt to work them away from his face and then sprint to catch up with reuben's unbreaking stride. "alright, andy," reuben spoke loudly to be heard by the tenderpaw. "lark and storm are helping us train today," he continued, and andy perked his ears. lark was an awfully pretty fae, and he'd admired her since she and storm had padded into the subway, reuniting with reuben with a series of yips and tail wags. she, too, along with storm, had the odd-colored eyes like reuben; unlike reuben, though, lark's blue and brown eyes were soft and friendly, whereas storm's pale blue and hazel eyes were clever and eager.

"lark and storm?" andy echoed, though he was mostly focused on the lark portion. "why? what are we doing?" the tenderpaw was very curious, resulting in endless questions that sometimes exasperated even reuben, who had a seemingly boundless amount of patience. he flicked an ear in acknowledgement of the questions, leaping over a collapsed pillar that had once held up the roof of an awning, andy scrambling over much less gracefully. "they're hidden somewhere within three blocks in any direction," he answered, his pawsteps slowing as central park came into view. "you can go three blocks north, which'll put you in central park, three blocks east, west or south," he explained, sitting with his tail thumping the ground. "if you cannot find them before sundown - " he paused to glance at the sun; it was about midday, and their shadows were cast directly underpaw. " - then you'll have to try again next moon."

andy's tail had begun to wag, his nose already twitching with anticipation. "okay," he said, excitement lacing his tone. "i can do it." reuben dipped his head, a smile twitching at the edge of his muzzle. "i know you can," he told his tenderpaw. "ready? then go."

andy was off in a flash, his nose pressed to the ground, delving deeper into central park, swerving between trees and ducking under park benches that were covered in leaves from disuse. he startled a bird from its nest, but made no move to chase it, as the scent of storm had invaded his nostrils. he jerked up for a moment, glancing around wildly, and then his muzzle returned to the ground, and he picked up his pace, jogging, now, until he reached a pile of boulders where the smell was strongest. he approached slowly, sliding his paws across the grass, avoiding fallen leaves that might crunch. as he curved around the rocks, he caught sight of a white tail that peeked out from the crevice. he pounced on it with a boisterous "gotcha!," his curled tail wiggling side to side. storm let out a yelp at the suddenness of the attack, wiggling backwards until he could stand. [color=#6D7B8D]"nice job," he grinned down at the tenderpaw. "i'll go find reuben, let 'im know that you've got me. good luck finding lark - she's a good hider." with a final pleasant grin, he trotted off.

having now found storm, andy turned and padded off in search of lark, his nose lowered but her scent not yet present. he turned out of central park, skirting an abandoned car that had the window busted out and a streak of black behind it’s tires where it had evidently screeched to a halt. it smelled thickly of old gasoline from the tank and burned rubber, andy’s nose wrinkling as he stepped far from the vehicle. he sneezed once, twice, clearing his nose of the horrid scent before setting off again.

for a long time, he smelled nothing, only concrete and mud and himself. he kept an eye on the sun, watching it dip towards the west, casting long shadows against the ground, andy’s thin pelt not doing much to keep him warm in the shade. having finally reached three blocks away from where he’d started with reuben, andy whirled around, a frown lowering his already-droopy muzzle. he began to run, determination and a slight panic piercing through him; he could do it, he knew, and he didn’t want to disappoint reuben. “come on,” he murmured to himself, looping back towards central park. once again, he came across the car, its red paint gleaming in the light. he paused, squinting at it, his flopped ears angling forwards as he dropped to a crouch, his belly low to the ground. the window wasn’t busted, after all – no broken glass littered the ground. it looked only as if it had been rolled down when the car had stopped, and never rolled back up.

andy coiled his haunches beneath him, his muscles taut beneath his silvery-blue fur, and launched himself towards the open window, his forepaws hooking over the edge of the door and his back paws scrabbling to find purchase against the slick door. one of his hind legs snagged the door’s handle and he hoisted himself over the window, a rich scent flooding his nostrils and a familiar fae catching his eye. lark grinned at him from the back seat, her legs extended and her tail thumping the leather. “hiya, kid,” she chirped, rising to her paws. “you found me.” andy beamed, his tail wiggling every which way, pride coursing through him. [color=#6D7B8D]“i found you,” he agreed, his eyes bright.

“good job,” lark cuffed him over the ear lightly, stepping around him and placing her forepaws against the open window. “let’s go find reuben; he’ll be proud of you. you’re a pretty good tracker, you know that?”

they are the ones who have always wanted freedom from the others (in other
words, humans). they are the descendants of the woods, strong and brave an
d fierce, yet gentle. they are the stockier and larger/medium sized dogs who
prowl in the shadows of their forest, the upsilon forest, descendants of the c
anine upsilon from whom they first came from, and their most revered and w
orshipped god. they worship at the gloam river, with the spirits of canines wh
o have passed into the afterlife living in the bodies of the koi, which are forbi
dden by every dog to hunt. they are a family, a unit, who value strength and l
oyalty above all else.

the upsilon hierarchy, as handed down by upsilon:
delta upsilon - the commander and leader, who’s word is law.
usually hand chosen by upsilon, who is required to watch over them.
aquarius - the second in command to the commander, also known as
the spokesperson and substitute when the commander is occupied.
chosen by the commander, and looked after by the god delta.
cleric - the healer who looks after and administers all herbs to the sick
or injured. often will receive prophecies or omens from the
gods. looked after by the goddes gamma.
druid - also known as the apprentice of the cleric who will graduate to
cleric after their training is complete. th
ey are the leaders of religious worship, such as leading the pack in the
pack howl every month. looked after by the god nu.
fleetfoot - carries messages to allies. looked after by goddess iota.
mercenaries - fighters and hunters. looked after by goddess theta.
novices - pups older than 8 moons training to become mercenaries.

broodmothers - gives birth to pups, will go back to regular duties after
their pups are weaned and have advanced to the novice position.
pups - the offspring of the broodmothers, also known as brood.
8 moons and younger, still considered pups who are not yet weaned.
nursery assistants - typically they are former broodmothers who do
not want to return to their regular duties after having pups.
