Confusion would be... somewhat of an appropriate term to describe the emotions the she-cat currently tussled with. Her mind stirred faster than her paws could even move across the dampened earth. She paused for just a moment atop a lichen-covered boulder simply to ponder. Why had StarClan contacted her of all cats? She'd never had much interaction with the ancestors before. She couldn't think of a reason why they would, either. She came from an average lineage with little importance in their name. She'd never accomplished anything too notable, either. In summary, she was no exceptional cat. Yet, the mystical StarClan had decided to reach out to her. They do work in mysterious ways, as she'd heard, and thought it might not be best to question them. But what they asked of her was like nothing she had ever imagined seeing herself do; lead an entire Clan? Did they really see her best suitable in such a role? She had no prior experience, no clue on where to even start. She'd long been separated from her birth-Clan since they disbanded all those moons ago. She had minimal knowledge of the inner-workings of a Clan, or its structure. "A little guidance would be nice." She muttered beneath her breath, taking a glance into the sky as it peeked between the treetop canopy. The odds all seemed against her.
Being alone, the she-cat had no issue with thinking aloud. "Enough sitting." She began, glancing over her shoulder to face the setting sun. It was just beginning to lower toward the horizon, a sliver beneath. "I need some place to sleep." However, the worry of spending another night in the open quickly left the she-cat as she scanned over the environment. The thick bracken ahead undoubtedly would have someplace for her to shelter in safely. If not some makeshift den, the fern leaves were shelter enough. Leaping gracefully from atop the boulder, her paws left the cool stone to the soft dirt below. She padded into the thick fern forest, her pelt brushing against their green stalks. Beneath their canopy, droplets of sunlight filtered between the parted leaflets, the ground dappled in yellow. Patches of green moss blanketed the ground, soft and pillowy to the touch. Further onward into the bracken, a babbling stream cut through the bracken and continued through, the water cascading down miniature falls. Fernstar took the chance of quenching her thirst, unsure how much more water would be available elsewhere.
Finally, just a bit past the stream the she-cat had recently crossed, the scenery began to open up. A slight break in the thick bracken revealed a small clearing. There was a slope leading into the space, a dip below the ground. The ferns grew all the way onto the ledge, shading the slope and most of the clearing as well. Within the open space, large boulders and logs laid throughout, covered in lichen and an assortment of mosses. Crevices between rocks and hollowed-out logs, outcrops beneath rocks, and dugouts in the walls of the slope were all suitable places for a cat to nest. It seemed perfect, too perfect. But that was the way StarClan worked, wasn't it? Those they guided always ended up in situations they couldn't quite explain. Thing is, Fernstar couldn't quite decide if she liked that or not.
She advanced into the clearing, a gentle smile lining her lips. No matter how strange of an occurrence it was, it filled her with a new hope. The she-cat had a determination, one that calmed her worries and ensured her that maybe, just maybe, she would be able to do as StarClan requested of her. "I'll sleep well tonight." She chuckled to herself, finding her way within a hollowed log. There, she patted the ground with her paws and curled into the groove, comfortably. Fernstar closed her eyes and found the rest she had long been missing.
