Pride of Aya

Ranks:
Intloko “Head of the Lion”: Male - Leader of the clan. Makes war decisions and takes care of the Inzoyo. Will patrol alone only or with kittens only. Is one of the head teachers.

Uboya “Mane of the Lion”: Kittens of the head Inzoya and Umqala.

Inzoyo “Teeth of the Lion”: Consenting females, but not the Intloko’s mate (Umqala). They stay in the camp and are the ones to go out with the Uboya.

Umqala “Throat of the Lion”: Female - “Voice” of the clan. She’s the speaker and guides the cats. Is one of the head teachers.

Amahlombe “Shoulders of the Lion”: Lead female hunter. She generally is the eldest lioness or the most experienced. She also is the third head teacher.

Intliziyo “Heart of the Lion”: Male guardians. They are the males allowed to stay in the pride by the graciousness of Intloko. They are the primary guardians.

Isisu “Belly of the Lion”: Follower female hunters. They are the primary hunters.

Esinqeni “Hips of the Lion”: The females who are not part of the Inzono and are pregnant with Intlizyo kits.

Iziqhamo “Fruit of the Lion”: Esinqeni kittens + apprentices.

Umsila “Tail of the Lion”: The elder council who guide the leaders in decisions. They also are the teachers of Iziqhamo kittens. They all know the medicine of the land and share the “medicine cat” duty.

System of the Throne:
Uboya are sent out on a 5 Seasons trip, leaving at age 1 with the Amahlombe and the Inzoyo. The strongest of the kits is marked by the Amahlombe and Inzoyo with a paw with claw prints on their chest. The second strongest is marked with a paw in between their shoulder blades. All of the kittens who “pass” are decorated with a head wreath of ferns. Those who do not are offered 3 choices.
Leave the clan.
Retire and join the elder council young.
Go out for another 5 Seasons, alone this time.

Religion of Aya:
The religion of the Pride of Aya is complex. They follow the ancient creed written on the leaves of the Aya plant, a fern, that has lived for generations. There are 11 leaves.

Prey of the Pride:
Amaphiko-Amabi “Amabi”: Speckled mousebird. X1 serving.
Amaphiko-Alukhuni “Alukh”: Masked weaving bird. X1 serving.
Igqabi-Legqabi “Igqabi”: Bushbaby. X2 servings.
Iliva-Elihambayo “Iliva”: Uromastyx. X2 servings.
Intaba: Klipspringer. X3 servings.

Predators of the Pride:
Ehleka-Inja “Ehlja”: The “laughing dog”. Hyenas. These loud and clever beasts are the nightmare of the Pride. They will chase the cats all the way to camp from the furthest edges of the territory. They never seem to tire.
Ethule-Ethe-Cwaka “Cwaka”: The “silent paws”. Panthers and leopards. These careful and patient hunters make any mother quiver. While they’ll occasionally try to attack one of the adults, it’s more likely they’ll try to sneak in and steal an apprentice or kit.
Imihlathi-Yelitye “Imihli”: The “rock jaws”. Crocodiles. No one escapes one once caught, and the Pride is at high risk when hunting near the River Bridge or especially when drinking. None have caught and survived unscathed.
Iitoni-Zethunzi “Zethu”: The “shadow talons”. Vultures. Often not only targeting the cats, but like the Ehleka-Inja, they will steal their prey. They are sudden, cruel, and target the stragglers. They work with deadly efficiency.

Other Threats:
Ukhozi: The “yawning cow”. Hippopotamuses. While no hunter of the cats, they pose a strong threat at the River, especially when the bulls are fighting in mating season.
