In the nursery, it was quiet. Cardinaltail was curled up by Ivyblossom's nest, watching as her two kittens stumbled around on new legs. His friend watched them closely, too, but with a more relaxed eye. It made his chest swell with warmth, knowing that she trusted him enough to relax around her newborn kittens. If what he'd seen of new queens in the past, most weren't nearly so comfortable with letting others near their offspring. His happiness had manifested into an unconscious purr, only stopping when Ivyblossom gave him a gentle nudge. Most of the nests were empty, since Tallthorn, Roselight, and Brambletuft's litters were all going to be apprenticed later that day. In the other corner of the nursery, though, Hollykit and Emberkit chased one another around, the older kit careful not to be too rough in their game of tag. Both kits were still giggling and having plenty of fun, even though they were clearly trying to be quiet so as not to disturb the two warriors. That must have been it.
"Did you decide on names yet?" he asked, once his attention was back to Ivyblossom and her kits. She nodded.
"Well, the kit that went with their father, the little black one, is SIngekit," she said, and Cardinaltail nodded. He remembered the little black one, and the friendly tom that had gone home with the kit in tow. "The biggest one's Sunkit, and the smaller, darker ginger is Fadedkit."
"Faded, huh?" Cardinaltail asked. "Why Fadedkit? I understand Sunkit, since she's got that bright fur, but..."
"I wanted to name one after Nightfang," Ivyblossom said simply, glancing on instinct to the spot where Nightfang's nest had once been. "I couldn't just name a ginger kit 'Nightkit', so I figured that Fadedkit would be close enough. Sunkit's fur was brighter, so I thought it might be a nice matching pair."
"Makes sense," the tom mused, nudging a bleary-eyed Fadedkit closer to his mother when his legs finally gave out for good. "It's sweet that you want to name a kit after her. I know how much Nightfang meant to you." The grey tortoiseshell just dipped her head, leaning forwards slightly as if she were about to rest it on his shoulder. Cardinaltail inhaled sharply with terrible, wonderful anticipation, and it must have startled her, because she bolted upright.
"I broke it off with Pyrespire," Ivyblossom blurted suddenly, her face warming under Cardinaltail's surprised scrutiny. Her ears twitched, almost like she was trying not to flatten them with embarrassment, but she held eye contact with him and maintained her unusually-shy smile. "Um. I felt like, right now, I need to be here for Sunkit and Fadedkit, and for Smokestep, and... for you. I can't do that while I'm tied to him, not when I'm grieving, and when I don't think I was ever in love with him in the first place. So I broke things off." She fixed him with a very pointed look, but when all she was met with was confusion, Ivyblossom just sighed. Instead, she offered him a more sincere, if bittersweet, smile.
"Wow. That's surprisingly mature of you, Ivy," Cardinaltail mrrowed, laughing as Ivyblossom swatted at him.
"Shut it, Cardinal," she hissed, but there was a playful glimmer in her eye as she said it. Her words took on a more gentle, genuine note as she looked to him with a smile. "Thank you for being here. Really. I don't know what I'd have done without you." Sunkit yawned suddenly, baring her needle-sharp teeth in a charming interruption of her mother's speech. She rolled over a bit, inching closer to where the two best friends were laying, before flopping over dramatically on Cardinaltail's paw. Almost instantly, her little sniffles smoothed out into steady breathing. The tiny kitten was fast asleep.
"Of course." He smiled down at Sunkit, then at her mother. "I'm always here for you," said Cardinaltail, surprising himself a little bit with just how much he meant it. But when Ivyblossom grinned back, wide and toothy and unbearably fond, it made all the sense in the world.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Tall Stones for a clan meeting!" Sparrowstar called, clambering up the Tall Stones as Tallthorn emerged from the woods with an easy, self-assured smile. The leader watched on in amusement as the usually-smug tom carefully slowed his steps, making sure to wait for his apprentice to appear from the pine groves to congratulate her before he joined the rest of the growing crowd. Though he wasn't particularly fond of the black-and-white oriental, Sparrowstar would readily admit that he was a little jealous of Tallthorn's bond with his apprentice and his skill as a mentor. And right on cue, Coffeepaw came forwards, moving between other SpruceClan cats with a bounce in her step before settling at the base of Tall Stones.
"I, Sparrowstar, leader of SpruceClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn." The bicolor tom looked to the apprentice, a pleased smile on his face. "Coffeepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your own life?"
"I do!" Coffeepaw cheered, sparing a moment to find Hailsplash in the crowd. When her father nodded back, she turned to Sparrowstar once more, her grin even brighter.
"Then Coffeepaw, from this day forth, you will be known as Coffeebean, for your enthusiasm and spirit. StarClan honors you, and welcomes you as a full warrior of SpruceClan." Hailsplash and Briarmask led her chant, the pair's thundering voices nearly enough to drown out those of the other warriors and apprentices present.
"Coffeebean! Coffeebean! Coffeebean! Coffeebean!"
As the proud cries of SpruceClan faded, Sparrowstar cleared his throat. "Today, we celebrate not only Coffeebean into our ranks as a full warrior, but the ranking up of five kits to apprentices. Will Dovekit and Crowkit please step forwards?" The siblings looked to one another, one excited and the other shaking with nerves, before a suspiciously happy-looking Tallthorn gave them each a gentle shove.
"Dovekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and you are ready to be apprenticed," Sparrowstar said, and was rewarded by the kit's massive face-splitting grin. "From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Dovepaw. Your mentor will be Brambletuft. He may not have been a warrior for long, but he is just as willing to learn as you are, and I hope that you will be able to learn and grow as a team on your path to becoming a warrior." Dovepaw, her two-colored eyes shining, sprang forwards to meet her mentor before he'd even emerged from the crowds. Brambletuft just laughed at her enthusiasm, gently coaching her back into the center of the circle before bumping noses with the new apprentice.
"Crowkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and you are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Crowpaw. Your mentor will be Goldenheart. He is a young warrior, but a talented and kind one as well. It is my hope that he will guide you well." Goldenheart laughed brightly, and his enthusiasm seemed to rub off on the shy Crowpaw, who timidly pressed his nose to his mentor's own before scampering over to his sister's side.
"Poppykit, Daisykit, Violetkit, your turn," Sparrowstar called next, and a proud-looking Roselight gave her neatly-groomed kits a nudge to push them into the center of the circle. Poppykit, stoic as ever, came forwards first with a challenge in her eyes as she stared up at her leader with shaking paws. "Poppykit, you have reached the age of six moons, and you are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Poppypaw. Your mentor will be Heathersong." The leader made eye contact with his mate, who just rolled her eyes fondly at him as she began to squeeze between the gathered cats. Sparrowstar couldn't have kept the affection out of his voice if he'd tried. "She is patient and caring, and I am positive that she will be able to pass those qualities on to you as well." While Mintfur and Cherryclaw both mimed gagging at his sappy expression, Heathersong ignored both of their former apprentices, gliding forwards and touching noses gently with Poppypaw.
"Daisykit," Sparrowstar said, and the second tortoiseshell kit bounced forwards with a happy hum. "You have reached the age of six moons, and you are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Daisypaw. Your mentor will be Cricketpounce. He is a skilled warrior with many moons of experience, and I'm lucky to call him my friend rather than my enemy." At this, a small ripple of laughter echoed through the crowd. "I'm sure he will make a wonderful warrior out of you in no time." Daisypaw and Cricketpounce met in a cheerful tap of the nose, before the apprentice turned to smile encouragingly at her brother.
"Violetkit," Sparrowstar said, nodding at the little tabby as he skittered into the clearing. "You have reached the age of six moons, and you are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Violetpaw. Your mentor will be Ramsey. He is brave and a little headstrong, so Cricketpounce says, and I know he has the right kind of confidence to guide you" As Violetpaw bumped noses with Ramsey, the rest of SpruceClan began to cheer, a few of the cats stumbling over the sheer number of new names, but each one excited nevertheless.
"Dovepaw! Crowpaw! Poppypaw! Daisypaw! Violetpaw! Dovepaw! Crowpaw! Poppypaw! Daisypaw! Violetpaw!"
Their voices echoed throughout the clearing, new mentor-apprentice pairs talking quietly as they got to know one another, and proud parents cooing over their growing kits. As Sparrowstar leapt down from Tall Stones, he made sure to shoot Mintfur a playful dirty look, motioning to the elder's den. His former apprentice just grinned back, and scampered off to grab what he would need for nest-building duty. While the other cats dispersed, Sparrowstar wriggled his way through the crowd until he found Heathersong dismissing Poppypaw to go rejoin her siblings. "You know, watching all this family stuff sort of makes me want to have one of my own," he said softly, a little coy, and his mate just rolled her eyes.
"You're the one who just gave me an apprentice," she shot back, but it was with a smile that she rubbed her cheek against his. "But yes, I would like that very much. Soon, alright?"
"Soon sounds good to me," Sparrowstar purred, walking away from the Tall Stones with Heathersong by his side.

Leafbare was often the season harshest on SpruceClan's elders, with the bitter chill seeping into even the deepest sections of the cave and the scarcity of new nesting supplies making their sleeping quarters even more uncomfortable. But now that Newleaf had dawned and moss had begun to grow back on the mountain, both Mistywind and Redwhisker were looking forwards to a refreshment for their sleeping quarters. Today, their savior happened to be one of the younger warriors, rather than a group of apprentices. "H-hi!" Mintfur said softly, slipping into the elder's den with a mouth full of moss and twigs. Redwhisker looked up, Mistywind following shortly after, each nodding in greeting. "I'm here t-to fix your nestsss."
"Wonderful," Mistywind sighed, clambering out of her nest in a surprisingly limber movement. "Thank you so much for your time, dear. This nest has been getting a little worn out." The tom nodded seriously, nudging his collection closer and beginning to nose through the options for what would help pad the sharp edges of the nest's thin sides. As the older she-cat stretched, she looked to her denmate, and stifled a scoff. With that look on his face, he was surely preparing to harass the poor young warrior.
And sure enough, he opened his mouth seconds later. "Tell me, Mintfur, have any nice young toms or mollies caught your eye?" Redwhisker asked, a conspiratory shine in his eye. The young warrior startled at the question, nearly tripping over his own feet in the middle of weaving new moss into his nest.
"Uh-hh, n-no? N-nobody," Mintfur tried, wincing as the catch in his words worsened with his nerves.
Redwhisker, who'd always been much smarter and more perceptive than he liked to let on, just smiled. "It's okay, you know. I was in love with a she-cat from another clan, moons ago. That's what you're hiding, isn't it?" For the second time, Mintfur nearly stumbled over himself in surprise, much to the older tom's amusement. "I'm of the opinion that life's too short to deprive yourself of being happy," Redwhisker continued, winking. "So the next time you want to run off and go meet them, do it. And if you don't mind a recommendation from yours truly, there's enough pine needles laying around to roll in so you can hide your scent."
"Th-thanks for the advice," the black tom purred, shoulders relaxing, just as he finished with the last stray twig. "I'm g-gonna ssslide out now."
"Of course," Redwhisker said knowingly. "Best of luck in your romantic endeavors, kiddo!"
As Mintfur fled the den, a wide grin on his face, Mistywind climbed back in her nest with a pleased sigh. Redwhisker rolled his eyes preemptively, already expecting the hoarse laughter that she let loose moments after the young tom had left. "My stars, Redwhisker," she rasped, still chuckling. "You're such a bad influence on the youngsters. Just because things worked out with you and Batstripe..."
The flame point rolled his eyes even harder this time, but he flashed an innocent smile at her anyway. "I don't know what you're talking about," Redwhisker cooed. "I'm a wonderful influence and a delight to be around." MIstywind sighed, shaking her head, but she couldn't keep the amusement from her face, even as she settled down for a nap in her freshly-made nest.

Before he could open his eyes, Badgerpaw was greeted by the thick scent of rotting leaves, and it was with a groan of disappointment that he rose to his paws. "I hate this place," he growled under his breath, shaking out the sticky-wet swamp muck that clung to his underbelly. "I hoped they were finally done with me after a moon of being left alone, but noooooo..." By now, he'd long since outgrown the instinct to shudder at the marsh grass sinking between his paws as he walked through it, but it was still just as unpleasant as the last time.
Birchpaw was waiting for him in the dusty, cracked arena. "Long time, no see!" the mottled apprentice called, looking bizarrely delighted to see him as he trotted into the space. "I think you're about as old as I was before I died," Birchpaw said, still smiling despite the wistful tone to his voice. There was some sort of tense, manic excitment shining in his gaze. "How are you feeling?"
"Um..." Badgerpaw said, swallowing thickly. Something about the look on his face was unsettling, but he'd learned that honesty was the best policy here. They always seemed to know when he was lying. "Not great. Everyone's still pretty down after Nightfang's death. She was kinda like my mom, for a while, before Briarmask. I miss her."
Birchpaw frowned suddenly, the excitement fading and a sudden horror dawning on his face. "Everyone? But I thought you..."
"Why aren't you happy?" Sharptalon cooed, sauntering into the clearing from the bushes without warning. Both Birchpaw and Badgerpaw stiffened, twin gazes snapping towards the bigger tom. "Surely you aren't upset about Nightfang? I had Birchpaw take care of that she-cat after she upset you with her hateful rhetoric about half-clan cats. I expected you to be celebrating. Your mother's dirty little secret is safe another day. You are safe another day."
"You killed Nightfang." It wasn't a question, simply a cold, empty statement of fact. When Birchpaw stepped forwards uncertainly, paw raised as if to comfort, Badgerpaw bared his teeth, skittering away from the touch like it had burned him. The ghostly apprentice's face twisted into a hurt expression. The living apprentice paid him no heed, nearly spitting with rage as he stared up at the tom. Suddenly, the nasty environment around him made much more sense. This was the Dark Forest. "You're a murderer."
"Now, now, little badger," Sharptalon purred, a warped sort of humor in his gaze. "Is that any way to talk to a friend? After all, we've been such loyal companions to you. I would expect you to be loyal in return."
"I'm loyal to SpruceClan!" Badgerpaw snarled. "I have always been loyal to SpruceClan!"
"Oh, really?" Sharptalon said coolly, but there was a hint of fury in his tone. "That runty, pitiful little warrior that SpruceClan had the audacity to accept into their ranks? Eliminate him. If you're truly loyal to your clan— our clan, then you'll do it. SpruceClan should have no room for weakness."
"Are... are you talking about Ravenswoop? Eliminate? I— no!" Badgerpaw stammered, first backing away slowly, but then nearly tripping over himself in his haste as Sharptalon loomed ever closer. "He's my friend! I'm not— no, I'm not gonna kill someone for you! You make me sick!"
"Oh, I think you will," Sharptalon growled, a sudden coldness in his eyes that Badgerpaw had only ever seen once before. In the eerie forest's lighting, the glint of the massive tom's claws looked particularly menacing. "I don't like traitors, little badger. And we wouldn't want sweet Briarmask to be dragged into this, now would we?" At that comment, the tabby apprentice froze, his blood running cold, and the mighty Sharptalon grinned cruelly. "Either you prove your loyalty by the moon's end, or I show you what I do to traitors. It's your choice."
With one last snarl at Sharptalon, Badgerpaw turned tail and sprinted directly at one of the wiry, scorched-looking trees. Maybe if he hurt himself enough, he'd wake up. Screwing his eyes shut, the tabby apprentice slammed into it with a great thud. There was a sharp flash of pain and a ringing in his ears, and then he was lying in his nest once more, coppery blood trickling from his nose and a horrible pounding in his skull. "Ugh," Badgerpaw gasped, wincing at the throbbing sensation and the nasally sound of his voice. "I'm g'nna go see Applefall..." But as he dragged himself up from his nest, biting back a groan at the sudden dizziness and the splattering of blood on the ground, that same cold feeling still sat deep in the pit of his stomach.
He didn't want to kill anyone. But if he didn't do what he was told, they would hurt Briarmask. Either he'd have to have the blood of his friend on his paws, or Sharptalon would kill his mom. Badgerpaw wasn't sure what was worse.
---
"Apprentices," the healer muttered to himself, waving a still-woozy, mildly-concussed Badgerpaw off with a thrash of his tail, before raising his voice to be heard. "I don't want to see you leave that nest for another day, at least!" The apprentice merely bobbed his head in agreement, before visibly wincing at the movement. Applefall resisted the urge to walk over and club the 'paw over the ears for the mistake. Suppressing a sigh, the calico turned back to the healer's den, preparing himself for another day of intensive herb-hunting now that the Newleaf blooms were beginning to sprout once more.
He barely made it through the entryway before a familiar voice's clearing of the throat caught his attention. This time, Applefall did sigh without reservation. "Tallthorn, I already told you, Dovepaw doesn't need any catmint for her cough," he deadpanned. "She just didn't want to admit to you that she tried to eat a squirrel's tail whole."
"That's not why I'm here," the oriental tom said back, and something about the utter defeat in his voice was enough to make Applefall turn around. Tallthorn stared at him with his mismatched eyes, shuddering almost imperceptively, before striding into the healer's den without invitation. "Listen, Applefall," he said, before the calico could make any comment. "What I'm about to tell you needs to be kept very, very secret. It's a matter of extreme consequence, possibly life or death. And I don't want to hear some snarky comment from you, I can see it on your face. It's about Nightfang." Behind the stone outcropping, midway through sorting herbs, Honeypaw stilled. Despite her instincts shouting at her to leave, her natural curiosity won out, and she leaned forwards slightly to listen in.
Applefall paused, fur bristling a little bit. Tallthorn took that as an invitation to continue, but not before glancing back to the entrance to make sure nobody was listening in. "Does the name Sharptalon ring any bells for you?" he asked, and was rewarded by what looked like the soul draining from the healer's body, Applefall nearly collapsing onto his side. "So that's a yes. Listen to me, Applefall, and listen carefully. For as long as I can remember, I've been able to see ghosts. It was Marshstar that sent me here, after all. But that's not why I'm telling you this. Sharptalon's back. He's been manipulating Badgerpaw in his dreams for moons now, and it was his little follower that shoved Nightfang off that cliff. You and I both know she's— was— too careful for that to have been an accident."
"You're kidding," Applefall said, but his forced bark of laughter, stumbling and high pitched and near-hysterical, trailed off at the pained expression on Tallthorn's face. "No, that can't... No, no, no, this can't be happening. You're telling me that monster is still out for us? Even after—"
Tallthorn simply gave him a pitying look. "Marshstar decided it was time for you to know. I'm not sure what she wanted you to do with the information, but at least now you know why Badgerpaw looks so beat up all the time. It's not from sparring sessions. He's the strongest one out of all of them by a long shot."
"Great StarClan," Applefall said quietly, slumping. "If they're interacting with the living, of course they'd get stronger. And that must be what happened to Softpaw, too, isn't it? Stars, it all makes sense. But what are we supposed to do?"
"Right now," Tallthorn said, though from the tremor in his voice, it sounded like he was just as frightened as the unflappable healer. "Right now, we make sure nothing happens to Briarmask. Because she's going to be their best piece of leverage. You and I might be the only ones who know the truth." Applefall just nodded, before following the other tom out of the den as they tossed ideas back and forth on how to go about keeping the deputy safe.
Honeypaw, a sick feeling in her stomach, looked down. The dried chervil she'd been holding had been shredded to bits by the nervous wringing of her paws. With a whispered apology to an unhearing Applefall, she swept the remains of the herbs off to the side, and snuck out of the den as stealthily as she could. Once she'd made it out, Honeypaw broke into a sprint towards the apprentice's den. There wasn't time to wonder about what the "truth" of Briarmask was, or why she was their focus. She had to get help to protect her friend, and she knew just the cat for the job. "Softpaw!" she hissed, shaking the curly-furred apprentice from his nap with a paw. "Softpaw, wake up!" The tom grumbled, clear eyes snapping open uselessly on instinct, and he rolled over to face her.
"Yes?" Softpaw said, dryly. "I was sleeping, so I hope this is important."
"It is. Do you remember the night you got hurt? In that shared dream?" Honeypaw said, in the same blunt manner she'd picked up from Applefall.
"Yeah, of course I do," the oldest apprentice said, a note of bitterness finding its way into his tone. "You really think I'd forget going blind? Or that massive, scary old cat?"
"No, that's not—" Honeypaw cut herself off with a sharp huff. "Listen, Badgerpaw's in trouble. Those cats he was with, the ones that attacked you? They were these really bad guys from before SpruceClan came to the mountains. And they're the ones who killed Nightfang."
"Wait, really?" Softpaw said, the vitriol draining from him immediately. Instead, a cold sort of fear registered on his face. "Ghosts can do that?"
"I don't know!" Honeypaw cried, her golden fur spiking. "I know that they can hurt you in that dream-world! But I overheard Applefall and Tallthorn talking about it. The ghosts are planning something, and I'm worried about Badger! Somebody needs to keep an eye on him. So will you please help me?"
"Honey, relax! I'll help," Softpaw said, one paw outstretched to pat hers gently. It took him a few clumsy tries to find the target, but he eventually managed to complete the comforting gesture. She offered him a soft smile, before remembering herself, and whispering her thanks instead. Softpaw smiled back, before he took on a more serious expression. "But first, we're going to need some kind of plan."
