mudstar unfurled herself from the ball she had curled up into in her sleep with a yawn.
the long abandoned fox den at the base of one of the huge oaks in the forest was a decent den, protected and warm and dark. but far, far too quiet. having grown up in a kindle, always surrounded by queens and the hubbub of kits, the silence of other cats was new. and she had quickly decided she didn't like the change at all. 'cats,' she thought, pushing herself onto her paws and stretching with another yawn. 'aren't supposed to be alone.'
ambling out into the warm evening air, she paused mid-step as a sudden movement caught the corner of her eye. a leaf tumbled down from one the great oak's lower branches. it landed a few pawsteps to her left, still half green. the sight of it made her stomach twist uncomfortably; dread sitting heavy like the time she had scoffed down too much prey cheekily stolen from the freshkill pile as a kit. leaffall was coming. and after that would come leafbare. seasons she had spent surrounded with others, working together to survive the harsh months.
but they were gone. there was only her now, alone, in the middle of a forest staring at leaf.
with a firm shake, as if to physically get rid of such thoughts, she tore her eyes away from the seemingly innocuous leaf. the feeling of dread, however, didn't full leave even as she walked past the leaf towards the entrance of the camp; making itself comfy at the back of her mind where it would surely come out to play in the quiet moments of the day.
the hundreds of scents in the forest were a most welcome distraction; keeping her nose and mind pleasantly busy. mudstar made her way towards one of the streams that carved their way through the territory she had claimed and named mallowclan; ears flicking as she paid close attention to any small, scuttling sounds in the underbrush around her - finding food was a priority right now - when something ... else caught her attention. slowly, she turned, eyes unfocused in the direction of the stream. it was not a sound, or a movement, but a - an inkling. an instinctive silent calling that every part of her yearned to follow to it's source.
she trotted along the bank of the rocky stream - water rushing pleasantly to the ear over the stones in tiny waterfalls - allowing her paws guide her without thinking too much. something old, something familiar to the deepest parts of her bones, could be found if she let herself follow the stream.
the moon was rising in the sky when she found herself in the a clearing, the stream ending in a large pool that reflected the sky above.
heart fluttering in her chest, she inched nearer to the it, barely even feeling the tall damp grass that brushed against her sides. distantly, she recalled her dam's stories, of the points in the world where the living could communicate with those who had passed on to the stars. this place, the clearing where the trees parted just so, crackled with the power of starclan like the air before a thunderstorm.
"ancestors," she said, bowing her head with closed eyes as she came to rest at the edge of the pool, tucking her paws under her chest. the tips of her ears very nearly skimming the surface water. "if you can hear me, i ask you, please, send a companion my way so we both may survive the moons ahead of us." she kept her eyes closed for several long minutes, breathing in the calming quiet of the place, before she lapped at the cool waters and turned back the way she had came.
