Fall
Fall is here! During fall, birthings will be difficult and the chances of mothers or children dying during birth will rise dramatically without the help of a skilled shaman. There is also a lessened chance of catching more prey or finding new people and skilled animals, and the odds of sickness will rise.

Announcements
Little reminder that the advent calendar is ongoing for the entirety of December! You must make a note in your post that you are opening the calendar for day(s) X and are requesting to roll for Y prize, with the exception of the day 7 prize where you simply inform your mod what crafted item from here you are claiming. Anyone can participate, including new villages. The advent calendar will be open for claims until January 11 unless you have contacted me prior to ask for an extension.

Additionally, feel free to include Christopher Conch as our resident traveler who documents life in the CAV world. Of course, the only rule is that he cannot die.

If anyone wishes to join the Discord, please PM me for the link.

Congratulations, jazz and hazil, for meeting the prerequisites to find a hidden gem! This particular hybrid (horse and cow/ox) cannot be given out until February.

❥ From the Advent Beacontown claims: three days of supplies, a safe cage containing a ender dragon female.

Another three people had found their way into Beacontown in the past year. All were shapeshifters, though none of them were related. First was Stella, a blonde woman who could turn into a small spider, second was Jesse, who went by they-them and could turn into a large dog, and finally Soren. Soren had flaming orange hair, mustache, and beard, and he seemed to have the most power, or...at least he had the most forms. He could turn into a grand total of four creatures. A donkey, a hyena, a cat, and a crow. And all four of those forms had the same blinding orange coloring as his hair.

Stella and Jesse had each taken different houses, for their different professions, which now meant that all of the living quarters in Beacontown were technically claimed.

So when Soren had arrived...well it had been a little awkward. The scout was rooming with Brick for the time being (Something Brick was ecstatic over, and Soren was...less than pleased about). Apparently he had a bit of an architectural background, so he was working to design a new house for the village.

Beacontown was going good.

Too bad the good times wouldn't last for long...

It's dead, sighed Rosanth as Seanni gently touched one of the eggs on the Hatching Grounds. As was the custom, the open sand-filled field was covered by many tarps to keep in the heat and protect the eggs from the elements. Unfortunately, it seemed as though this one had succumbed. Have Predath take it away. I am tired.

Seanni's mouth quirked. It was upsetting that out of the nine eggs Rosanth had laid, two were nonviable. While the Weyrwoman hadn't ever cared to pay much attention to her biology lessons--politics had always been more relevant to her--she remembered one of her Weyrhealer teachers mention that due to centuries of inbreeding, it was more common for dragon clutches to be smaller and have fewer viable eggs. Perhaps it was for the best, because it kept the dragon population smaller and more sustainable. But it still left a sour taste in Seanni's mouth every time she beheld another egg that likely held a deformed hatchling within it, knowing that if someone had the tools and knowledge to do so, a fresh batch of dragon founders could be created to revitalize a slowly-dying population.

"Rosanth," said Seanni softly, looking up at her dragon. "do you want to fly right now?"

Rosanth's eyes glowed soft blues and greens. No, she said. I simply want to rest.

T'gin stood alone. Well, not quite alone, for he had Nonny beside him. But no other people stood with him for it was graduation day and due to the disastrous between attempt, he had been held back for a turn.

"Weyrlings, I will now bestow upon you your wings," Weyrlingmaster F'dust was saying, shifting his shoulder as his ever-curious brown fire-lizard, Han, crawled over him. "Weyrling N'kolas?" The dark-skinned elf seemed several shades paler as he was invited to stand in front of the Weyrlingmaster. "I am proud to announce you a full bluerider of Black Rock Weyrhold and of Dovefeather Hold." The Weyrlingmaster fixed something to the front of N'kolas's dark gray suit, brought out specifically for the occasion. "You will always have a place here."

"Th-thank you," stammered N'kolas, shooting a quick grin at K'ron. "Thank you, Weyrlingmaster."

The Weyrlingmaster grinned. "You may call me F'dust now that we're both just riders." He waved N'kolas away and the newly-appointed bluerider made his way to where Karoth sat next to the other riders' dragons. Even from his place apart from the others, T'gin could hear Karoth's quiet rumble of happiness and felt a stab of jealousy.

K'ron's appointment went similarly to N'kolas's and even the morose T'gin couldn't hold back a smile as he saw the two Dovefeather riders clap each other on the back. They would be going home soon. Tutikko's appointment was initially like the other two but before she could step away, the Weyrlingmaster made a grandiose gesture with his arms.

"At the request of Weyrleader N'reg," he said, "I must bestow an additional honor upon greenrider Tutikko." Everyone held their breath. "After some discussion between myself, the Weyrleader and the Weyrwoman, we have decided that Tutikko has excelled in her studies and has shown excellent leadership skills among the weyrlings. Thus, she will be our first wingsecond, helping to lead the Weyrleader's wing."

There was silence for a few moments before everyone started to cheer. "Congratulations Tuti!!" Rorria was screaming as she leaped towards the other greenrider for a hug. Soyah tried shaking the newly-made wingsecond's hand, saying something that T'gin couldn't hear. Even the blueriders came up to give Tutikko high-fives and T'gin sorely wished that he could be there, congratulating Tutikko.

Next time, Nonny said, nudging his rider with his snout. Next time you and I will be there. I told Diasrioth that you are very happy for her rider and Diasrioth says that she thanks you and that her rider understands. Indeed, T'gin saw Tutikko squirm away from all the hugs and give him the smallest wink. He smiled back.

Seven eggs. One gold and six others. Seven eggs for ten people. Myracle was holding her breath and silently willing her body to be still. She was thirty years old! She shouldn't be acting like an overly-excited child. Yet here she was, at her second Impression. It was much smaller than the previous one; only the current dragonriders, the Candidates, their families, and a few representatives from nearby villages were permitted.

Myra smoothed out her white dress and glanced around. Hallitu was practically fainting, her pale face managing to become even paler. Raiden wasn't even paying attention to the eggs, no. He was holding eye contact with N'kolas who stood next to Karoth on the edge of the Hatching Grounds.

The dragons and fire-lizards hummed louder and Myra couldn't prevent her hands from shaking. This was it; either she would Impress or she wouldn't. Even louder and now the eggs were rocking hard. One egg--not the gold--trembled...and cracked. An over-large brown tumbled out, getting tangled in his wings. He made a pitiful cry and the Candidates all looked at each other.

Vedobin reached the brown first and held his head up as Hallitu carefully moved the left wing. Raiden helped the little brown's front legs disentangle themselves. Once the brown had been helped, the gaggle of Candidates including Myra stepped back. Glancing around, she saw another head--a green--poking her head out of her egg.

"Daresith thanks you," said Raiden fondly. No, he was now R'den, Myra realized with a half-grin. And, as R'den evidently realized himself a moment later. His eyes opened wide and he looked down at the innocent-looking dragon. Everyone except for Tollioma, who had just cried out her dragon's name, laughed.

Another egg cracked and the Candidates turned towards it. The boys turned away after a moment, disappointed for it was the queen hatching. Myra turned to it with her breath caught in her throat. A delicate yellow snout poked out of it and soon, the egg fell away to reveal the dragonet. Her head moved between the female Candidates and she bounded towards them. The other girls save for Riziolke scattered but there was no hesitation as the gold jumped onto Myra, bowling the woman over and barely missing Myra's face with her claws. As it was, Myra's breath was knocked out of her and her cry of Manth was weak.

"Hey," chided K'ron, lifting the struggling golden dragonet from her body. "That's no way to behave with your bondmate!" He and Myra exchanged brief grins as she struggled to her feet. "Now don't do that again," he said, putting the wriggling gold down.

I'm sorry, said Manth, looking at Myra with whirling green, gray, and yellow eyes.

"Don't worry," replied Myra, petting Manth on the head. The dragonet cooed and Myra's heart swelled. How could she be angry with such an adorable, excited creature?

"Let's let her eat," said K'ron, shooing them along. "Go go." Myra laughed and Manth's eyes turned red, green, and blue with excitement for her first meal.

Meanwhile, Hallitu was clenching her fists as she watched Seregan then Nebenni Impress a bronze and a green respectively. This was her last try and if she didn't--the last egg cracked rather unceremoniously but her head still jerked towards it. The small green, tinier than her siblings, clambered out and keened. Something in Hallitu's heart seized and she made a motion to move towards it. But fear held her back. Was she really worthy? Would a dragon even accept her? Her, someone who had been ignored most of her life? Placed in inglorious positions because she had neither the skills nor ambition to go elsewhere?

The tiny green looked directly at Hallitu. I'm Fayaraith, introduced the dragonet, and I want to make you happy. Come here, she commanded. You need a hug.

Hallitu walked over to the dragonet in a daze and sank to her knees next to the green. Her Fayaraith. She placed her arms around the fragile neck and sobbed, mouth curving upwards in a smile. She was a dragonrider!

We'll never be separated, assured Fayaraith. I always want to be with you.

"I know," sobbed Hallitu. "I-" She squeezed gently. "I love you," she whispered. She felt rather than saw Fayaraith's eyes pulse gentle blues and greens in response.

The mood in the Hall was merry after the Impression. Weyrwoman Seanni had directed the spectators and non-chosen Candidates to South Tower, which was right next to the Hatching Grounds, and staff had started bringing in food almost as soon as the last person sat down.

"Wasn't that exciting?" Baridna asked Anniken, who was sitting beside the Glasscrafter. "To see your own mother Impress a dragon!"

"I loved it!" exclaimed the young teenager, eyes wide with excitement and bouncing in her seat. "I want to see Manth."

Riziolke, who was pushing around the food on her plate, smiled slightly. "Your mother and Manth are probably asleep," she said, "because newly-hatched dragons are a handful." Suddenly, she pushed the plate away. "I'm not very hungry," she told her mother. "I might eat later." Baridna eyed her daughter with some concern. "I'm okay," said Riziolke glumly. "I...don't think I'll stand for Impression again, though."

Anniken reached over Baridna to pat Riziolke on the arm comfortingly. "It's okay!" she said. "I bet your friends will be jealous because you get to eat this really good food and they don't."

Riziolke couldn't hold in her chuckle. "Thanks," she said in a slightly softer tone.

A few seats away, Myriam was enthusiastically asking questions of Headwoman Renolla. "How do you manage food and supplies?" she asked. "Do you have shops or is everyone allocated food or...?"

Renolla swallowed. "Everyone is allotted food, but has the option to purchase more from the Fishers, Farmers, and Beastcrafters. We also have trading caravans coming in and most of us get food and products that we don't grow or make here."

"Like what?"

"Wine and other alcoholic drinks, mostly," said Renolla with a grin. "We have a few homemade distilleries but I wouldn't recommend visiting them." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Don't tell Borrin but I hate his beer. Tastes worse than rotten tunnelsnake meat."

Myriam chuckled. "We don't have much alcohol in Cyrrane but I think what we have tastes better than what you're describing."

Renolla nodded. "I think I might like to try yours for comparison."

"Someday," said Myriam. She fell silent for a few moments. "If...we were interested in more than purchasing products from the weyrhold, how would that work?"

Renolla shrugged, forehead furrowed in confusion. "What would you be interested in?" she asked. A moment later, she understood and her mouth opened slightly. "Ah. You mean Impression?"

Myriam blushed. "Yes, Impression," she said sheepishly.

Seanni, who was sitting across from them next to her weyrmate, looked up. "Oh, sending over some Cyrrane Candidates?" she asked. "Not a problem."

"Really?" asked Myriam, brightening.

Seanni grimaced. "Provided you understand that assuming they Impress, your Candidates will stay at the weyrhold for the duration of their training. And likely for a turn or two prior to an actual hatching, to ensure they understand what responsibilities they will be taken on."

Myriam made a motion with her hands. "I understand," she said eagerly, "but how do you know when a dragon will mate? Or how soon a clutch will hatch?"

Seanni chuckled. "We have our ways," she said. "Now, is there anyone you had in mind..."

As Myriam conversed with Seanni and Renolla, Zaos sat uncomfortably a few seats away. To his left was Boldosh, sitting across from his wife and daughter, and to his right was K'ron, who was enthusiastically tucking away the duck dish. Though he wasn't about to admit it to anyone, Zaos was enjoying the flavors, so different from those in Cyrrane. He could recognize the barley side dish, slathered liberally with some sauce. The drink, too, was excellent. Water, juice, klah, wine, and beer were all being served and he silently chuckled--though his face remained stony--as he watched the teenaged girl across from him slap her brother's hand as it inched towards a keg.

"Are you enjoying the food?" inquired Boldosh, looking at Zaos.

Startled from his contemplation, Zaos nearly pierced his tongue with his fork. To cover up the action, he chewed and swallowed before speaking. "Yes," he said. "It is very flavorful."

Boldosh smiled. "If you haven't already, you should try the cod," he said. "It was only caught yesterday."

Zaos was about to ask more when his eye caught new people entering the hall. The people were talking quietly and looked both exhausted yet thrilled.

"The new weyrlings," said K'ron with pride. Zaos looked at the light elf. "Myra and Raiden are there, too," he explained, putting his fork down and casually cupping his head in his arm. His mouth curved into a grin that couldn't be contained. "I'm really happy for them." He chuckled. "But the first few weeks are horrible. Well, for me they were!" he explained, glaring at seemingly nothing. "Xarath," said K'ron with a roll of his eyes. "He disagreed with me."

"You...talk with your dragon?" asked Zaos. He'd heard of the telepathic abilities that the Black Rock Weyrhold dragons had, but hadn't been properly briefed as to their extent.

"Of course," replied K'ron. "Don't ask me how or why--there are better historians of this history than me--but Pernese dragons can use telepathy, teleportation, and telekinesis. Although the last one is pretty specialized. Siarlith, Rorria's dragon, is pretty good at it. I haven't managed to convince Xarath that it's useful," he said ruefully.

With a glance at the new weyrlings, who were now settling down at the other end of the table, Zaos thought. He wondered what it was like to be telepathically bonded to such a unique creature. Though the weyrlings were obviously exhausted, he recalled the thrill in their voices as they called out the names of their dragons. Lyra would love this, he thought suddenly. It would be a new adventure for her. Out loud, he asked: "Why are the first few weeks so hard?" His heart pounded in his chest and his hands trembled slightly as he pinned a slice of the cod and transferred it to his plate. Either K'ron didn't notice or didn't care.

"The newborn dragons are like infants or toddlers," he explained. "They need feeding when they want feeding, must be washed every day, and generally complain if you're not with them at all times. They grow quickly so there's more dragon every day. And you have to take care of yourself as well as participate in lessons, too. I barely remember those days but," he said with a shrug, "it's worth it because by your first year, you're starting to work on flying, formation patterns, history, and other things according to whatever you want to specialize in."

"Specialize?"

"Some people want to be historians. Others want to be healers. Work with Starcrafters. Go into leadership positions. All sorts of things," K'ron said. "I'm fine doing whatever is needed of me. But we'll see when I return home."

Zaos blinked. "You're not from here?"

K'ron's face wrinkled. "No," he said. "I'm from Dovefeather Hold. Myracle--Myra over there--is our Lady Holder."

"But she's here."

K'ron nodded with emphasis. "And she'll stay here for four years, four turns, whatever the measure of time is." He gave a quirked smile. "It's worth it, though, to Impress a dragon. Because you have someone who's always there for you, who can give you advice even when it's absolutely not necessary--"

Zaos got the feeling that K'ron was once more speaking to Xarath.

"--and you can share everything with. You can go wherever you want, do whatever you want. It's amazing what such a simple thing brings." K'ron was now smiling this soft smile that seemed to make his face glow. Zaos mentally transferred it to Lyra and suddenly wanted her to have a chance to experience something apparently so wonderful. She was his daughter and by Iméra and Nýchta he wanted her to be happy.

"How were you allowed to..." Zaos fished for the term and shrugged.

"Stand for Impression?" filled in K'ron.

Zaos nodded with relief. "Yes."

"Myra had to talk it over with Weyrwoman Seanni and Weyrleader N'reg, who control which people are allowed to stand. I don't know the specifics but I think it included a trade of some sort, and a promise of alliance." K'ron frowned. "Or a closer alliance."

As Zaos and K'ron talked, Anniken had quietly gotten out of her seat. She had eaten more than enough and her stomach was now complaining about how full it was. The food here was so...different! She wanted to ask her mom what things were like here and to meet her dragon because her dad was obviously busy. She glared at him quietly but he didn't notice.

"Anniken!" exclaimed Myracle softly, jumping slightly at Anniken's cold arms being draped around her neck. "How are you?" She turned around to nuzzle the girl and Anniken's heart swelled.

"Okay," replied Anniken. "Can I see your dragon? Can I see Manth?"

Myracle sighed and her head turned to Sedah, a few seats away. "I shouldn't, right?" she said softly.

Sedah blinked. Then, her brain caught up with her. "Oh, no, certainly not now," she said hurriedly. "Anniken, Manth is asleep and wouldn't be happy if you woke her up."

Anniken pouted, mouth turned down in an exaggerated manner.

"But!" exclaimed Sedah, "Zerith says she wouldn't mind if you visited her. Do you want to come with?"

"You should go," said Myracle, giving Anniken a quick kiss on the cheek. "Zerith is very nice. I don't think you've met her yet."

Anniken shook her head. "Okay," she said softly. "Where is Zerith?"

Exiting the dining hall was no difficulty for the two, and Sedah led the young girl to where Zerith lay in the sun. The pale yellow of her hide glimmered in the sun and Zerith turned her head towards the pair. Anniken gasped. "She's so pretty!"

Sedah smiled indulgently. Then, she barked out a laugh. "She says that it's very nice to meet her sister's rider's child." She looked down at Anniken. "She says hello."

Anniken giggled. "Can I touch her?"

"She said absolutely." In fact, Zerith was lowering her head and closing some of her eyelids, hoping for a scratch in the spot between her horns. "Look, you give her a scratch right here. Dragons and fire-lizards love it."

"She's so soft!" exclaimed Anniken, gently stroking Zerith. "Are all dragons like that? I thought that they had scales."

Sedah smiled. "Here at Black Rock Weyrhold, our dragons have hide instead of scales. It's not very tough but it protects them from the cold of between."

"Between?"

"The place dragons go for a little bit when they teleport." Anniken nodded, satisfied. Sedah pursed her lips, trying not to laugh at the girl's look of utter concentration on the extremely difficult task of stroking a dragon. Everyone was happy. All was well.

"Daddy," whined Tiennen, clinging to Waxinnan's leg, "I don't want you ta go! I wanna go with you on t'a dragon."

Waxinnan leaned down, internally groaning as something in his back cracked. He was no longer the young man who had saved a dragon egg; now, he was a father and growing no more youthful. "Tien," he said, sweeping his son upwards and letting the seven-turn-old rest in his arms. "I'll be back before you know it! We'll be there for a few days to set up, and then we'll come back. But then we'll go again, and then we'll come back. You'll see me veeery often."

Nitia pursed her lips, evidently trying not to smile. "Tien," she said softly, "daddy has very important business at the marketplace. He'll tell you all about it when he comes home."

Tien pouted in his father's arms. "I want you to sing me a song when you come back," he said petulantly. "I like your songs."

Wax and Nitia exchanged glances, both flushing with the love they felt for their son. Wax pecked his son's forehead and gently lowered him. "I promise," he said.

As Wax was speaking to his family, Fella was struggling to keep the wriggling pup in her lap as she straddled Siarlith. "Rory," she complained softly, "this pup just won't sit still!"

In front of Fella, Rorria turned around, keeping her right hand on the riding straps. "It'll be over in a bit so try not to let the pup fall off?"

Fella chuckled. "I will I will," she said, "but can you just imagine the scene? Oops! We lost one of our goods between because the darn thing wouldn't sit still!"

Rorria rolled her eyes and smiled before turning back to face Siarlith's head. "Alright, here we go!" she called to the weyrholdfolk gathered below. "We'll be back in a mo'!"

Fudiom's head snapped up from his quiet conversation with Mairmun, tracking the green dragon as she leaped into the air and disappeared between. His head drifted back down. "It's a very quiet location," he repeated. "Pleasant."

"It won't be the same without you," said Mairmun warmly, cradling Fudiom's hands in his own. "But it will only be for a few days."

"Perhaps I can visit," contemplated Fudiom. "Although Renolla might be lost without me helping her direct the staff."

Mairmun chuckled. "The Weyrhold would be lost without you," he agreed. "But I'm sure Renolla can manage."

Fudiom cracked a smile. "When you come back, please tell me all about it. I want to hear every moment of it; every barter, every sale, every person you meet."

"I'm very excited," admitted Mairmun. "I've been a Harper for many turns and traveled for many more but I have not seen the...variety of life that you described."

"It's a sight," agreed Fudiom, squeezing Mairmun's hands gently. "But you must go now. I believe your dragon is waiting."

It only took a thought. A blink and she was hurtling through the sky instead of sitting at her desk. She spread her arms which were now wings and she was gliding, quickly and smoothly like she did so many times. As she circled the weyrhold, taking care to keep to the skies, every inch of her sang with a forbidden joy. This was the closest she could let herself get for she knew every one of them yet none knew her. As it should be.

Am I simply writing history? she thought once again, now gliding over the river. Or did I create this world? If it was history, then she might as well add precognition or prophecy to her laundry list of powers. A type of foreknowledge of all that could be, even if it didn’t necessarily happen.

If she closed her eyes—a dangerous game while flying—she could see Seanni smiling tiredly at her twins as they washed their dragons; Veash as he flirted with Camilla; Ezekiel crying and being comforted by Mairmun who was reminding him that this place was safe and no one would harm him. All this and more flitted through her head.

She opened her eyes and dived, feeling the wind rush past her feathers. She pulled up at the last second between a pair of houses, just barely avoiding a dog who barked and howled its failure at capturing its prey. In her brief glimpse, she caught its brindled fur and smiled internally as she recognized Shadow. She soared high above the weyrhold once again, whirling as she admired the buildings that were so ordered near the Towers and became so disordered farther away. It rather reminded her of the hills along the highway that were home to towns and cities like this.

Scenes from the past, present and future flitted through her mind. Right there she could see the place where Eshni had scared a trundlebug. Right there, she could see where Beallolril and Fira had stolen their first kiss. Right there, she could see where Shollun lay under a tree, stroking Tirvam on the snout content to soak up the sun's rays. Right there, she could see where people called for action. Right there, she could see where people gathered to mourn. Right there, she could see a split--perhaps a call for exile or a call for a coup. Beyond that, she saw no more. She forced herself out of her thoughts and wrenched herself away from this wonderful, magical, fantastical, messy, gritty, mysterious world.

A blink and she was back at her desk, computer open, only a few seconds having gone by. She glanced behind herself nervously but no one interrupted her. Save for Emeric, of course, her favorite blue fire-lizard who had just appeared from wherever he had been.

"Watcha got for me today?" she asked him.

Boll and I scared a cat away! exclaimed Emeric. It was big and ugly and Rosa was proud of me and Melrick gave me the best part of the pigeon and--

"Calm down," she chuckled, stretching her arm to allow Emeric to climb onto it. "You know I’m supposed to be working." The little blue grumbled but settled down at her command. In a corner of her mind, she could feel Pine's amusement at the blatant lie and Cloudy chiding her for getting distracted. She switched desktops and finally began writing—this time, about what she was supposed to have been working on instead of hurriedly trying to finish another Black Rock post.

westhaven is built in a sprawling field with slowly sloping mountains, lakes and rivers, and endless space. lavender and a variety of other wildflowers grow in patches. the grass is soft, and children often play in the sun. the valley is exposed though, leaving it vunerable to attacks and icy winter winds. Westhaven is very reputable for its unique fighting techniques and loose strategy. They have altered the names of their ranks, but not changed them, and not renamed all of them. The people here are wild and slightly untamed, and enjoy being active and moving. They are free and are most remembered for being extremely street smarts. they hunt many animals, and wheat farmers are common. they have vast orchards, and there are vast woodlands near there home, but often, they are vulnerable to forest fire, storms and floods from the nearby lake. they are usually led by a human, hybrid, or a winged person. cats, dogs, foxes and horses are common, as they do not usually eat cattle or oxen, and only use them for agricultural purposes. if i do end up getting a dragon i would prefer only eastern and european dragons. Fire lizards are extremely rare, and usually kept only by older members.
