The Maine coon molly watched her closest friend go up to the front of the room (finally!) during the naming ceremony and cheered loudly as he was dubbed his new name ‘thrushmoor’. Now only one thing was left before he was officially a soldier for the celestial beings clan; his silent vigil. It was tradition in the clan that the nigh of a soldier they sit vigil outside the church in the patch of two-leg graves all night. if a cat left their post at all during that night, it would be the same as if they had failed their soldier or messenger test and they would have to start all over. Mockingbirdcall approached her friend with a large grin, rubbing her large head against his smaller one in congratulations. “come on thrush, the sun is already starting to set on us. cottonstar said I could walk with you to the grave site, but once darkness fully falls I have to leave you alone.” the young calico tom nodded with a soft smile and took his place at the ginger Molly’s side as they made their way through the church and out into the clearing. “did you ever think we’d be here mockingbird? us, fighters in a clan, dedicated to fighting evil in the world? I know I didn’t. before you found me, I thought I’d be dead before I made it to the age I am now.” the young tom said to his best friend, getting a bit lost in the memories of their intertwined past. Mockingbirdcall gently licked his head as they arrived at the grave area in comfort, sitting on the edge of a low-lying rock. “we saved each other thrush. you have no idea how much you’ve done for me too. you’re my best friend and you always will be.” the small tom couldn’t help the slight blush that flushed his cheeks at the Molly’s words, and he reached forward to nuzzle her fluffy chest before me walked into the middle of the little cemetery and sat down. “I always admired you you know? you were so big and strong even when I first met you. I was just this tiny little kit, all skin and bones really, a complete stranger that you thought you could help. and you did.” thrushmoor smiles sheepishly as he looked down at his paws, not sure if he had gotten too sappy with his feelings. his friend simply smiled at him, looking up at the fast setting sun. “oh, by the way, cottonstar is gonna have cats slinking around to check and make sure you don’t fall asleep or anything. most will stay hidden I think but just keep yourself alert in case a strange cat uses this as a chance to get into camp.” thrushmoor nodded at her words, his voice a bit shaky while he tried to straighten his body out to show confidence. “I’ve got this mockingbird. the sun is nearly gone, you should go. I’ll see you in the morning.” And with that, the tom turned towards the tree line to keep watch.

several hours had passed since that moment, and the sun was just beginning to peak back up over the horizon. thrushmoor heard a cat approaching by the crunches of the leaves, and knew it must be a clan mate not a loner, for they were not attempting to cover the sounds of their approach at all. looking up from his post, thrushmoor’s eyes fell upon the large form of coursergaze, who just so happened to be his best friend mockingbirdcall’s older brother. the new warrior wasn’t sure if he was able to talk yet, so he simply greeted the older tom with a polite nod of the head, his eyes locked to see what news would be brought to him. “Do you love her?” the toms voice was deep and gruff, and his words caught thrushmoor by complete surprise. his mouth opened to respond but he didn’t know what to say, and the Maine coon chuckled a bit. “I’m her brother, I’m very perceptive, plus very protective of my baby sister. You’ve known her longer than anyone else in the clan, excluding me, and I know she cares for you deeply. But I want to know if you care for her the same way.” Thrushmoor gulped a bit nervously, eyeing up the tom that was more than twice his size. “she means everything to me, honestly. she saved me after my mother abandoned me, and we’ve had each other’s backs ever since. I would do anything to assure her happiness. I’ll comfort her when she is sad, support her in making difficult decisions, and stand by her side in all point a of our lives, until there is no longer breath in my lungs.” he didn’t really know where all of those words came from, but the older tom could see that they came from the young fighter’s heart, and a rare smile graced the cream tom’s face. “You have my approval then. Don’t make me regret giving it to you.”

he hadn’t really expected anything to come of his brief love affair with dewfrost of the bordering mountainclan. she was a sweet hearted creature who was absolutely beautiful to look at, but birchglow had never been the type to even consider one day settling down and starting a family of his own. so when he saw dewfrost waiting for him at the border one night, looking a bit different than the last time he had seen her, he couldn’t help but wonder, and her words had only confirmed it; she was pregnant. For the last two moons that had been the only thing on his mind, and while he had not thought of himself as being a good father before, he had begun to more closely watch his clan mates with kits, seeing how they raised their little ones. as the time passed from two to three moons since he had last seen the beautiful silver molly, he began to anxiously wait at their meeting spot on the border every night, hoping for a glimpse of her or one of her friends to bring him news; how many kits did they have, was everyone healthy, how was dewfrost doing? that night had started off no differently, and as he sat there with his tail twitching impatiently, his nostrils flared as he caught a familiar scent. immediately he stood, his eyes scanning the tree line for movement, and that’s when he saw her, with this tiny bundle of fluff in her mouth. birchglow raced to her side, nuzzling her gently. “im glad you’re alright dewfrost. I was beginning to worry that something had happened to you or the kits during the labor. how are they, have you named them yet?” his words took on a fast pace and an excited tone as he spoke. the queen set down the tiny kit at their paws to muzzle him back, a small giggle escaping her. “we have one son, whose back in camp, named cypresskit. and we have one daughter, who I’ve named dewkit so that you’ll never forget about our time together, no matter how short.”

gingerpelt had felt like there was a gaping hole inside of her ever since the loss of her two brothers; she was the only sister and was the smallest of the trio, so growing up she had been used to her big brothers protecting her from everything. and so the orange tabby had spent the last half of her life searching for the toms; she was on a constant journey, never setitling in one place for very long, risking her very life as she entered into territories of dangerous and unfriendly clans. But nothing was enough to persuade her to give up, although one clan came very close; the celestial beings drew her in and she truly felt for the first time that she had found a home. but her brothers were still missing, and despite the urges of the clans elders to stay, she left in the end to continue her search. but ever since then, she has had a reoccurring dream of several cats who appear to be glowing, sitting up in the clouds, urging her to go back to the celestials; at first she shrugged it off as a weird dream, but the frequency began to cause her to believe it was more like a vision than a dream. she longed to go back, and one night promised the starry cats that she would, but first she had to find her brothers.

that next day she came across a familiar scent at the border of a clan she had not yet interacted with. crossing over into the territory, her ears swiveled as she went in high alert, knowing full well not every clan was friendly to strangers like her. she felt as though her paws were moving without her direction, as if some invisible force was pulling her, and so she just gave in and went with the feeling. she ended up at the mouth of a clan camp, with many angry cats circling her and hissing out ‘how did she find us so easily? no one just walks into camp.' however, two cats broke through the crowd at the familiar voice of gingerpelt trying to reason with the clan cats, and her eyes locked with those of her brother basspelt, quickly looking behind him to see whimbrelface standing there as well. both toms looked shocked at the arrival of their sister, but gingerpelt wasted no time and immediately raced towards them, purring loudly as she rubbed against the bicolor tabby and the solid tabby, and the pineclan crowd dispersed around them, realizing the molly posed them no harm at this point.

the family had about a week of time to reconnect before gingerpelt once again was plagued with the same vision dream, and now that she was sleeping in between her brothers bodies in their den, she was waking them up constantly with her mumbling and moving. one morning, whimbrelface pulled her aside to talk to her, taking her just a bit out of camp so they could be out of range of any nosey clan mates of his. “what’s going on gingerpelt? everything was fine when you first found us, great even, but now you’re more distant, and you keep us up at night with your nightmares. talk to me.” the orange molly paced a bit as her brother spoke calmly, taking a deep breath before sitting in front of him. “before I found you guys, I visited at least a dozen clans trying to find you. What I wasn’t expecting to happen was to fall in love with one of the clans I came across, but I knew I had to find you and basspelt so I left them. and now that I found you two, I’m dreaming about the celestial beings clan every night, especially with them being so close, one of the bordering clans for this pineclan!” unknown to the two of them, their third sibling had followed them out of camp and was listening from the shadows to the conversation. At this point in time, basspelt stepped forward to be next to his brother, his words causing both cats eyes to widen in surprise at he suggestion. “so why don’t we just leave pineclan and join this celestial clan? if you feel called to go there, it’s probably not just a random dream. there’s nothing really holding whimbrelface and I to pineclan, and now that we know how long you’ve been searching for us we don’t want to just abandon you. let’s go talk to mintstar; I think she’ll understand.” gingerpelt felt like crying at her brothers words, and as they all stood to go back to camp, she nuzzled each of them, causing whimbrelface to chuckle a bit as he murmured; “you’re stuck with us for life now sis.”

LAST MOON

atticus followed ashface through the alleys, keeping a few pawsteps behind as to not disturb the she-cat. earlier she mentioned picking up a scent of another cat on laurelclan territory and that they should go chase it off. atticus argued that no cat was going to listen to them, especially because laurelclan had just returned to their old camp, but ashface seemed determined.

it was weird, being in the city; atticus was used to the shelter of trees and bushes that he could dart under any time. he wasn't repulsed by his new home in any means, it was just something that he would have to get used to. luckily he was surrounded by cats who were used to the city and had grown up in it, so he was much more comfortable and willing to learn.

even though atticus decided he would become a permanent member of laurelclan, he still felt a little alienated from his new clanmates. the only other new cat the clan had encountered was fallowpaw, but she was able to fit right into clan life. the only real friend atticus had was ashface, and he didn't even know her too well. atticus let out an audible sigh- he was the only cat who could change his relationships with others. he liked clan life mighty fine, but sometimes he thought back to his life in the rogue group. he was much more respected there, and he had a family that he could count on. he cast a quick glance to ashface, wondering if she felt the same. he knew she had a sister who disappeared after the city fire, but she rarely talked to him about that day.

atticus's thoughts were interrupted by a call from ashface- "the scent is stronger here!". he could scent the cat too- it was even a little familiar, though atticus likened it to the confusing smells of the city. he quickened his pace to catch up with ashface, and padded by her side as she followed the scent trail. soon they came across a small pocket park that was still dry and sooty from the fire. ashface crossed the street quickly, and after checking again for monsters atticus followed. they walked further and further into the park until the scent was at its' strongest. two mud-and-foliage-covered cats were huddled together, facing away from ashface and atticus. the clan cats were downwind, so they took a heartbeat's pause to survey the cats before ashface called out.

"hello?"

the two cats turned around, and atticus's eyes immediately flashed with recognition- they were his sisters! he dashed closer to them, breathing in their scent. "ophelia! rosaline! it's me, atticus!" the mollies looked to each-other, then back to atticus. he desperately read their gaze, hunting for anything- happiness, surprise, but both of their eyes were void of emotion. his heart dropped, and he took a step back, surveying their state. his sisters looked underweight, and rosaline's stomach bulged with signs of pregnancy. nervously, atticus looked back to ashface. her eyes were clouded, but the flicking of her tail gave away her anxiety.

"hello, atticus," ophelia said, staring blankly at him. she looked down at rosaline. "i think we can save proper greetings until you take us back to your camp. we've been waiting for you."

atticus held her gaze, then broke it to stare at his paws. ashface spoke for him.

"of course... ophelia," she said, and atticus sensed her air of confusion as she determined which of his sisters was which. he gave her a slight nod, a way of confirming her guess. ashface's eyes gleamed with pride.

THIS MOON

frostpaw darted out of the apprentice 'den' upon hearing his mentor, bearstar, call his name. the camp was still in ruin from the fire that happened three moons prior, but slowly they were beginning to rebuild. when frostpaw was born, the clan had well over fifty cats, and even with the two new mollies atticus and ashface brought in last moon their numbers now were smaller than ever. he slowed down as he reached bearstar, and came to a halt at the older tom's feet. steadily, he met bearstar's gaze, awaiting instruction.

after a slight pause, bearstar spoke. "i have something i need to take care of on the border today." frostpaw studied his mentor's eyes, but bearstar's cool blue stare gave nothing away. "stay here, go train with fallowpaw, whatever you want. make sure you're back at camp by sundown. i expect to have a nice mouse or something like it waiting for me when i return." bearstar finished his sentence and sharply turned, heading out of the camp without looking back to make sure his apprentice understood. frostpaw looked after him, a little hurt by his mentor's brashness.

frostpaw turned and retired to a sunny corner of the clearing, where he watched the clan wake and go about their day. with no second commander to assign patrols, the cats just did whatever they wanted so long as everyone's fed by the end of the day. his eyes drifted to atticus, who was talking in a hushed voice with pinebelly. frostpaw had always been suspicious of atticus, but when he found his sisters last moon, frostpaw was able to see what atticus was actually like. the grey tom seemed to be fitting into the clan better than he had before, and he had his family to spend his time with. frostpaw glanced around, trying to find atticus's other sister morningfoot, but it seemed like the molly had already left for patrol.

when frostpaw looked back to atticus, ashface had joined the tom and pinebelly was padding away. curious, frostpaw moved himself closer to the two cats until he was in earshot. acting distracted by a bird in the sky, frostpaw pricked his ears to pick up their conversation.

"i don't know what to do with them here," atticus said. "it's so... weird how they just adapted to clan life. especially with the way we were raised by arch. i didn't expect them to even take warrior names."

ARCH? frostpaw stood and quickly padded away from atticus and ashface, fear flashing through his pelt. when he was a kit, he was under constant surveillance because it was believed that arch, the sister of sweetfeather and daughter of houndstar would come and kidnap him or one of the other kits in the nursery. he had heard wicked tales of her wanting revenge on the clan after bearstar kicked her out during the shift from adderclan to laurelclan. if atticus and his sisters were raised by the violent she-cat, how could laurelclan know that they were trustworthy additions to the clan?

The lazy drifting of multicolored leaves heralds the beginning of leaffall throughout the clans. Temperatures have begun to drop, causing cats to fluff out their coats and huddle close at night. Medicine cats begin receiving more patients complaining of stuffy noses and sore throats and are going out more often to stockpile the necessary herbs for the coming moons. Warriors do not yet have to worry about a dwindling fresh kill pile with many squirrels and other prey animals scrambling about to take advantage of nature's bounty, but they must keep an eye out not to strain themselves as the weather grows colder.

mallowsun sat alone in the nursery walls, tracing her tail around her now swollen belly. i wish dear flareblood was here sometimes. the màthair-stoirm thought to herself with quiet worry. every time when a fellow guard or a soldier came to bless their newest dame, mallowsun felt herself tensing. right now, there were no cats in the clan who could possibly pass for her forbidden mate’s colors. but even the newest soldiers could identify dear flareblood. if any of the other stormguards or the high lord himself saw that she

it was barely evening when another soldier-brambleheart-nudged rainstrike's shoulder with her muzzle, prompting the younger stormguard to look at her from the chipmunk he was eating. "the high lord wants you." her usually warm amber eyes were tense, anxious. why? was he in trouble?

"did he say what for?"

"no." she nodded to the large den that crowned their camp, like a storm cloud. at the entrance to their den. there was a stormguard waiting outside, obviously having been sent by the lord. It was rather unbecoming for a king to talk to his subjects face to face. unless it was important. or if they were in dire trouble.

uncertainly rainstrike rose from his meal, nudging it toward brambleheart. he flinched as he recognized the guard. paleclaw. her cold ice-blue eyes were far from warm, and they seemed to lack emotion altogether. in that moment, rainstrike pitied ospreypaw, since the cadet was already struggling with the combat skill. one more failure, and... rainstrike refused to consider the alternative. there was no room in the kingdom for failure-all it became was one more mouth to feed. most likely blackstar would end the younger tom himself, instead of asking another cat to do it. or even worse, he'd ask his son coleuspaw to do it.

the brown tabby followed the sleek snow-bengal to the leader's den. sometimes when he glanced at her, she looked as if she had no emotions other than strict discipline and piercing ambition. perhaps that's what made her deadly.

the scars on rainstrike's shoulder and eye throbbed in cold reminder of his weakness. he still had perfect memory of the fox that had mauled his shoulder when blackstar ordered them to spread apart. it had taken a frightening minute for the ebony tom to rip the fox off rainstrike - then named rainpaw. perhaps that was because blackstar wanted to see how well the apprentice could deal with that form of stress. it had been worth it though, to see the menacing phantom of a cat execute the fox with brutal efficiency. it was frightening to see how quickly blackstar got to the fox's throat. if he remembered correctly, that skull would be in this den. the lord liked his trophies. the one he’d received on his eye...was a little more difficult to shake. especially when the other stormguards mocked him.

when he'd gone to see swallowdusk, she'd only closed the wounds and given him herbs to prevent infection. not to erase the scarring. let that be a reminder to you, boy. needless to say, she'd refused to treat his bellyache; it'd been her student lionpaw who'd snuck him that wonderful juniper berry. at least cedarsight had been sympathetic enough to help the younger soldier around.

the two approached the den, and paleclaw nodded to him before sitting down to stand guard, just in case he tried anything. not that he would. blackstar was a ruthless and deadly fighter, who could probably rip apart rainstrike before he even got the chance to leap. the fox had been a very upfront display of that.

the den was deserted save for the leader and his mate leapordgaze. the elegant calico molly was eating an angelfish. the royal children were nowhere to be seen as far as he knew - they were probably outside. rainstrike bowed low to show deference, his muzzle practically touching the ground.

"i'm glad you've healed somewhat." blackstar said when rainstrike settled himself. his tone sounded however quite unsympathetic. he sounded like something was...delighting him, "you have a gift for ambush not even your friend brambleheart has picked up." that rainstrike knew. he had picked up the ambush skill at the most astonishing rate of cats in his class.

rainstrike acknowledged his lord's praise with a simple dip of his head, was that all blackstar called him here for? obviously not. "i've been planning to put it to use."

interest flared in rainstrike's eyes. a mission? this early on in his career, it was nothing short of audacious and heady. "i'm sure that you understand that lostclan has had a rogue problem, am i right?" the black brute asked his charge with cold caution. when the slender brown tabby nodded, "i want you and viperrasp to find the second rogue group's mogul and execute him. use any method necessary."

the very mention of the savage guard's name made rainstrike shudder in apprehension. viperrasp was perhaps the cruelest of the corps, and he knew how to kill extremely well. except, unlike blackstar, he drew it out. there was something wild and untamed being kept behind those wild dark brown gaze. even paleclaw expressed that he might not be the best suited for the job to blackstar. his anger was so untamed and coarse that in a mission, it could cloud his judgement.

noticing the soldier's unease and fear, blackstar narrowed his icy viridescent eyes "i'm only sending him for your first, boy. so you don't step out of line." rainstrike gulped, trying to hide his emotions behind a facade of power, struggling with it a bit perhaps. obviously, he put up enough of a decoy that his lord didn't notice it.

"i understand." the slender brown tabby replied.

the black brute jerked his muzzle to the entrance as a curt way of dismissal. "you will set out at dawn tomorrow." his tone turned into something out of hell itself. "do not fail me."

emberfoot sat beside darkheart, they had arrived there not too long ago and had become somewhat acquainted with one another. they were both exiles, that was the one thing they had in common. emberfoot was not particularly fond of how standoffish darkheart presented himself. but he was the only one she had taken the time to get to know. "what do you think of one? he's a bit strange from what i've seen." she asked trying to start up some conversation.
he didn't look at her. "he's odd, always raving about the gods or whatever."
"i think that its rather interesting, its usually only the medicine cats that hear voices from the dead." she gave her black chest fur a lick. "i think he's quite the interesting character."
darkheart let out a small huff of air. "if you're so curious you should go talk to him."
she stood up. "okay." she began to leave fully aware that the tom was watching her intently. there was something about one that made her curious, there was more to him than meets the eye, and emberfoot was planning to find out what those voices meant.
