THEN
Badgers weren't that much larger than cats. But they were at least as mean and kept going when any sane being would have paused. When cats fought, they first tried to intimidate each other. Who's yowl was louder? Who was larger? Who could hiss more impressively? This way, fewer cats got hurt. The fact that Forestclan was huge compared to most clans also didn't hurt. But badgers weren't cats. A badger had once killed four cats--two through direct action and two through infection in the days following the brief battle and despite periodic cleanses, Forestclan continued to have issues with uppity badgers who thought they could lay claim to the bountiful forest.
The normally mild Nour was hissing and spitting at the badger, fur bristling along his spine. Only Mila and Applestar could match him in ferocity as the small patrol tried to intimidate the obstinate badger. Ophelia yowled, a piercing sound that irritated Applestar to no end. But he used it to his advantage, advancing on the badger. It wasn't deterred. In fact, it became more angry.
With a growl, the beast lumbered forward, beady eyes staring into Applestar's own green eyes. He felt a thrill of fear that the fight was now beginning but leaped forward anyways. The badger reared and the two clashed, claws swiping at flanks and fangs meeting fur. By the time the rest of the patrol had entered the fight, Applestar's belly had already been nearly opened from being impaled on the badger's blunt claws after he had leaped at it. Spitting up blood, Applestar extended his claws to their fullest and leaped at the badger again.
Slowly, the patrol wore down the badger until it turned tail and ran. Applestar sank to the ground as the patrol chased after it and he could faintly hear the sounds of Ophelia screeching and Loonfoot following suit. Applestar tried to push himself up but blood loss made him faint. He collapsed to the ground and knew no more.
"Get up. Don't look so tired."
"Grayfur..."
"Lean on me. The pain will be over soon. Then, you can reassure the patrol with whatever lies you'll concoct."
"That's rude."
"My dear tom, Honeystar never disclosed her condition to anyone. 'Oh, I'm fine,' she said as she was coughing her lungs out. 'Oh, I'm fine' she said emerging from her den looking like a car had gotten to her. You leader-types are too secretive. Tell Dustleaf, at least. Or Tumbletoes. I'm certainly not going to be the one to tell Thymekit anything. Sweet kitten won't believe it unless it comes from her brother."
"Fine, fine," grumbled Applestar. He shook his head and started, looking down at himself. His belly was covered in blood but looked as though it had healed some time ago.
"Applestar?" That was Mila, looking at him with a concerned look on her muzzle. She looked at his chest and blanched. "Do you need Dustleaf? Or Larknose? Tumbletoes? Anyone?" Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Did you...?" Her ears flattened and her fur bristled slightly. "You know!" she hissed.
"Oh. Uh, no. I'm alright," Applestar said hurriedly. "But...I think Tumbletoes would be best for this. He knows how to best prevent infections."
The worry didn't drain out of Mila's eyes but her tail twitched in agreement. "I'll support you," she said. "Lean on me."
As the rest of the patrol made their way back, euphoric after having killed the badger, they were startled by the somber scene of Applestar struggling to walk, Mila by his side.
NOW
Boulderpelt sat down, ready to eat her mouse. The leafbare always made her less hungry for some reason, despite a year-round availability of food. Today was a good day; the patrols had been organized and sent out, the apprentices were training, the kits were sleeping, and the camp buzzed with a certain contentedness. She was itching to talk to Barleystream, who she knew had been speaking with Gustclan patrols lately. Maybe sheβs had some good gossip. And at the very least, could certainly use a reminder of the laws. A shadow fell across her and she looked up, noting the pale ginger fur and small face.
"Boulderpelt?" asked Applestar.
Boulderpelt sighed internally but patted her paw twice to invite the leader to sit with her. He seemed abnormally nervous, almost excited. It was cute. "Is something wrong?" she asked. As his deputy, it was almost required of her to ask. He had claimed his wound from the badger had healed (abnormally quickly which suggested to Boulderpelt that he had lost a life, but she worked hard to quell those rumors) so that likely wasn't it. Anything else, she hadn't a clue.
Applestar's muzzle wrinkled briefly. "Not...really," he said slowly.
Boulderpelt's eyebrows rose briefly. It wasn't like Applestar to be so cagey. Except about his leadership duties which he generally only confided to Dustleaf. Who went and told Boulderpelt anyways.
"I..." He sighed. "I've...liked you, Boulderpelt. For a while."
Now that was news to her.
"But I kept waiting for..." He looked away from her briefly. "I understand if you don't feel about me that way," he said quickly. "but I just wanted to tell you." Piece said, he hurried away from Boulderpelt, leaving her stunned.
She wanted to call after him, explain that she did like him. But she didn't know if it was in that particular way. And besides, he was leader and she was deputy. They'd known each other since she was literally a kitten. That felt dirty, somehow. It certainly was his right as a clan cat to have any mate he chose--Honeystar had wanted kits near the end of her life--but with his deputy...? Forestclan was lax but unlikely to be that lax. Boulderpelt sighed, a little growl emerging from her throat. How dare Applestar place her in this position? She huffed. She was talking to Dustleaf about this. Medicine cat or no, sister or no, this was definitely something she needed to hear.
***
Cats are physically incapable of crying. That didn't prevent Honeystar from wailing her heart out as she watched her kits' warrior ceremonies with Minkstar beside her. He knew exactly what she felt like, having attended the majority of pre-assessment Moonpool visits. It was a tradition that he was proud to uphold, even though he knew many of his fellow Starclan clanmates had dropped out one by one from despair at being so near yet so far from the world they had once resided in.
"I wish I could have been there for them," Honeystar managed to choke out. Her voice was hoarse from crying and Minkstar's heart broke a little more for it. It didn't have to be, not when they were spirits in a land that catered to their every whim. "I'm so proud of them but I wish they didn't feel the pressure- The pressure to- To be like me!"
Minkstar nuzzled his granddaughter, recalling all those nights of heartbreak and frustration and longing as he paced his starry cage, waiting for someone who could be even a smidgen like him. No, not like him. Better. Now, Honeystar was wishing for the exact opposite. And he understood.
"Aspentail made an excellent father, did he not?" asked Minkstar quietly.
Honeystar's ears twitched. "Better than I could have hoped for," she whispered. "He did this only because we were friends. He never expected..." Her dying. The words didn't need to be said. "But he could have given up. He could have ignored them. I couldn't have asked for a better father for them."
"Let's go," urged Minkstar, standing up and nudging Honeystar. "The ceremony's over."
Honeystar was reluctant to leave the viewing pool but after some more coaxing, he managed to get her to leave. Some days, he wondered if it wasn't better that they simply fade away rather than exist in a state of permanently longing for a thing they could no longer have.
***
"Ur'a pretty gurd hruntr," mumbled Doveheart as she and Larknose came back to camp. Doveheart was carrying a pair of mice and a bird while Larknose was carrying a rabbit. "Ur'da lern?"
Larknose didn't reply until they had placed their catches on the fresh-kill pile. "All medicine cats in Forestclan go through three moons of warrior training. It's our way of weeding out those who aren't willing to be dedicated. Because a kitten can't make the decision rationally, but a cat who's close to being an adult can." He smiled. "Tipnose, Scorchpelt's mate, was my first mentor. We still talk and she's...like my second mother."
"And not Dustleaf?"
Larknose paused thoughtfully. "Not really. She's more of a good friend. And mentor. But not mother."
Doveheart nodded. She loved spending time with Larknose; he was kind, funny, and handsome. And smart! Too many Wildclan cats had been so focused on themselves and their ridiculous traditions but Forestclan was very different. It was selfless and kind, full of humor and love. Perhaps it was just her biased perspective--plenty of older clan cats had told her of the many struggles that had emerged under Honeystar--but she loved it here. And it was her home now.
"Medicine cats don't normally hunt, do they?" Doveheart asked.
Larknose's whiskers and ears twitched. "It depends on the clan. I certainly hunt on occasion. And patrol, too. Dustleaf is too busy finding and sorting herbs, caring for everyone, and so on to do that. Tumbletoes doesn't really hunt but he sometimes helps the nursery assistants to watch the kits."
"Does Dustleaf never find that boring?"
Larknose shook his head. "Of us three, she's closest to Starclan no doubt about it. If there's anyone who'd receive a sign, it's her. So we leave the spiritual up to her and take care of the physical."
Doveheart chirped absently. "I've never really thought about this much. But it's absolutely fascinating."
Larknose seemed to glow with pride. "Well...so are you," he said haltingly.
Doveheart chuckled. "Well, since it appears that it's your day off, how about we eat our catches?"
Larknose grinned. "Great idea!"
