The Oshawott examines your fist, sniffing your hand before hesitantly meeting your knuckles with their own. A fist bump! The other Pokémon cheer, and Oshawott knows you're trustworthy.

"An extraordinary match" The professor smiles, before turning around and walking to the other side of the room.

"Perhaps you'd like to have a Pokémon battle, to further strengthen your bond?" He offers, holding out his own Pokéball, that lets out a joyful Caterpie.

"If you win, i'll grant you a prize!" He adds, motioning to a small box on his desk.

Well, do you want to test your luck?

A soft laugh escapes the trainer as the other pokemon cheer, and Kailani turns just in time to see the professor speak. She watches him summon a gleeful caterpie, the bug-type's happiness similarly expressed on Kailani's own face.

"So do you wanna try?" the carminaura asks her new partner.

The oshawott glances from Kailani to the caterpie, then nods his head. He wants to fight, or at least try, in hopes of making his trainer proud.

Seeing the action, Kailani thrills "Alright!" using her inside voice, of course. She flashes a thumbs-up at the professor in a hopefully normal, human-like fashion, then adds with a (sly) grin, "We'll try battling! And maybe win that mysterious prize you mentioned. carminaura (meaning 'princess'); derived from 'cartinau', the Haitan Creole word for squirrelfish; with thoughts of 'menkachi', the Japanese name for the same fish

Laura pet her shiny Snivy on it's head and picked up the pokeball, letting the Mudbray out. "Hey, buddy! Welcome to the team." She smiled before sitting down, thinking. "For a nickname, how about Muddy?" The Mudbray seemed to agree, bending down and licking her face. She giggled before pushing him away. "Muddy it is!" She stood up and returned Muddy, picking up her bag and looking around. "Well, I guess it's onwards towards the next town, huh Leif?" Not waiting for an answer from her pokemon she grabbed a map from her bag and opened it. "Well.. here we are, route 1, so if we take this path we can find the next town." She rolled up her map, put it back and called out to Leif, making sure the shiny Snivy was following. She took in a breath and started following a path towards the next town.

Toto cheerfully exited the lab, Popplio in tow. "You excited too, little guy?" She asked, and the Popplio yipped in response. Grinning, she led the Pokémon to a bench and sat down. No Pokémon would be in her possession without a name, so she took a moment to think of one. Settling on Kani, she asked the Popplio his opinion, receiving another yip. With the confirmation, she smiled and headed to the route just outside her town - just like all other new Pokemon trainers had to, right?

kani spotted a bush of wild berries, ooh!

your new pokemon ran over, and gathered as many as they could, before running back to you. these would come in handy in the future!

"caterpie, use string shot!" he shouted, and the caterpie obeyed, lowering your pokemon's speed stats by one.

As the professor explains how battling works, Kailani once again nods along, but before the spar begins, she cries, "Wait!"

Kneeling down, the trainer addresses her starter: "I wanna give you a name, but I also want it to mean something, y'know? I can't think of something really good at the moment, so d'you mind if I just call you 'Oshawott' for now?"

The water-type rubs its scalchop self-consciously, eventually agreeing with an amiable "wott", and Kailani follows by flashing a thumbs-up at the professor. "We're good to go!" she confirms.

The battle begins; Oshawott immediately finds himself entangled in string. He grumbles quietly to himself about caterpies and their string shots, then carefully maneuvers out of the silky trap. Upon hearing his trainer cry "Tackle!", the otter launches himself at caterpie, hoping that the string doesn't mess him up too badly.nalu=wave;koa/ako=warrior/nalu(ako)?

skwovet sat unbothered, munching away at the oran berry within it's paws. it enjoyed your company, and with an outstretched hand, offered your pokemon an oran berry! how kind.

though, before your pokemon could take it and eat it up, another pokemon appeared.

this pokemon seems ruthless, stomping through the berries and picking a fight with skwovet. it seems to want some berries, but it doesn't want to share. this wild pokemon pushes the wild skwovet onto the ground.

"Great job!" Kailani cheers as the Tackle connects. Oshawott and Caterpie are both so small; the spar is nothing like the league battles she watches on television. Even the trainer battles on the beach are thrice as entertaining!

...but if the butterflies in Kailani's stomach are anything to go by, then this battle is equally exciting in its own way. This is Kailani's first battle with her starter; her first battle ever—maybe Oshawott's first, too. Though they're nowhere near champion level, they'll get there eventually, just likes waves traveling the entire sea before collapsing onto the beach.

Wait—'just like waves'? Now that's a thought.

"Tackle again!" Kailani commands as Oshawott shakes off the second string shot. Her grin couldn't be wider when the otter mutters an affirmative and charges.nalu=wave;koa/ako=warrior/nalu(ako)?
