Eshni walked down the aisle feeling slightly faint. It had happened so fast! One moment, Ermid was proposing to her in the South Tower and the next, her parents had begun preparations for the wedding. For the past few sevendays, fire-lizards had been delivering messages and updates, the weavers were frantically sewing suitable clothes, and Jesni had been driving Eshni mad with questions about how she'd like the wedding to look.

But the inevitable moment had arrived all too soon and now, she was looking around at the gathered weyrfolk--her family and friends, the people whom she'd known her entire life--who were sitting patiently in neat rows. She shivered a little with anticipation and drew in her lilac gown slightly.

"My little girl, so grown up," murmured Ershar from beside her. He smiled at her and she took in his weathered face, lined from so many years spent in the sun and smiling at his family. Just like he was doing now.

Eshni gave a shaky smile and turned back to see Ermid, so handsome in his dark suit, holding his hands out for her. She took them and squeezed, silently communicating her nervousness. He squeezed her hands gently and tilted his head toward Waxinnan, who stood to her left. He stepped out from behind the pair and began to speak.

His speech was short, to Eshni's surprise, describing in brief details how Eshni had brought joy to the weyrhold and how Ermid had worked steadily to keep it running and how important they both were to their families and how he, Wax, was sure that they would have a long and happy marriage. He concluded by saying that they had requested to add a last name in honor of new traditions and how he would be happy to announce to the world the newly-married Eshni and Ermid Singer.

The pair kissed. It was glorious.

"Fella! Fella!" exclaimed Rorria, bursting into her girlfriend's room. All Crafter apprentices lived in a communal hall (called barracks by most) either in the West or East Weyrhold depending on their profession, and it was expected that the small barracks would need to be expanded at some point in the near future to make way for the influx of new apprentices.

Fella, who was reading on her bed, looked up. "What?" she asked. She pushed herself up and swung her legs to the floor. "What's going on?"

"I graduated!" Rorria squealed. "I'm an official dragonrider, not just a weyrling!!"

Fella's mouth made a small "oh". "Congratulations!" she said after a moment. A grin spread across her face. "So, do you have the day off or something?"

Rorria laughed. "Yup! I'm going to be moving into my own house later this turn. But for now, I'm gonna stay in the South Tower until something's built." She stuck out her tongue. "N'reg--he's my wingleader now--told me that I'm expected to participate in building my house. Something about personal responsibility and blah blah."

Fella rolled her eyes as she stood up and walked over to Rorra. She put her right hand on the wall beside her and leaned on it. "Stupid rule if you ask me. We're big enough that we should be able to hire some builders for us."

"Yeah, but Renolla refuses to. I guess it's tradition by now. Even Seanni and N'reg helped build their own home."

"Still fardling annoying. But I'll ask Benny if I can get some time off," Fella mused, "and see if I can help you."

Rorria's eyebrows shot up. "Really?" she asked hopefully.

"Well, duh! Don't be a dimglow," said Fella playfully, running her fingers through Rorria's hair. "I'd love to help!"

Rorria's heart swelled with gratitude. "Thank you," she said softly, leaning into her girlfriend. "Thank you so much." Fella put her hands around Rorria and they stayed like that for a while.

Hallitu took the dish from Vedobin with a practiced ease and ran it under the water. She passed the dish to Myracle, who would soap it and hand the dish to Jarshonen for rinsing, and reached out her hand for the next dish. Hallitu hummed softly, a quiet tension entering her voice. There were some days--like today--when all she could do was worry about the future. She had heard the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader discuss Rosanth's next flight and her heart had stopped. She remembered a conversation just before Borinth's eggs had hatched, about four turns prior, and bitterly thought of it as a promise unkempt. While she understood that Rorria had better things to do like care for a then-newborn Siarlith, she still wished that they could have had more time together. A real friendship.

"Hey Tutu," said Vedobin with a gentle nudge to her side. "C'mon. Don't hold up the line."

Hallitu realized with a start that she hadn't moved for...half a minute? A minute? A few minutes? Her cheeks burned as she accepted the mug from Vedobin. "Sorry," she mumbled. "Just..." She exhaled heavily.

Vedobin smiled at her. "You've got nothing to worry about. Honestly, today was Thread-blighted. First rounds with the Healercrafters, then with the dragonriders, then I went back 'cross the river to the farms, and now this. How was yours? Your day," he corrected himself. "Your day."

Hallitu shrugged. "Not bad. I mostly stayed at the Tower--North Tower," she said hurriedly, "with the Fostering staff and the weyrbrats. Jom was helping, too." She smiled, remembering Eshni's attempt to teach the children teaching ballads. It had mostly devolved into singing simple songs and pretending that the weyrbrats were big, strong adults (Tien, Akiniall, and Esty) perfectly capable of doing things like wrangling herdbeasts (Teya and Sharon). After a certain point, Eshni had given up on teaching and simply sang songs with the children to pass the time until Salano, Wedassea, and Nella had returned from their other duties and let Hallitu and Jom take a break.

Vedobin laughed and Myracle chuckled softly. "My day was pretty good," mused Myracle. "I shadowed with Sedah. Watched her do paperwork. I never knew that so much paperwork could even exist."

Hallitu glanced at the Dovefeather head chief. "What do you mean?"

"In Dovefeather, we don't have anything like that. I talk to people, go on hunts or gathers or patrols, make sure that everything's going smoothly. But here, there's supply lines and tithes and trades and alliances and births and marriages, and crafts, and much more. All of it has to be carefully documented to prevent misunderstandings both presently and in the future. And constantly updated. Along with taking care of things like making sure that the weyrlings and Craft apprentices are doing well in training, keeping the animals alive and safe, finding good spots to build new housing, and so much more." Myracle shook her head. "Almost makes me regret coming here sometimes. I miss home." The statement was so matter-of-fact but Hallitu knew exactly how the head chief felt.

"I don't know if I want to stay here," Hallitu admitted. Vedobin cocked his head and she noticed Jar's eyebrows rise. "I just don't want to be a failed candidate who stays here because I keep hoping and hoping." Her words had thickened as she neared sobbing. "I want to be my own person, not another cog in the machine."

Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Jar bend his head down and Vedobin flinch. Myracle put down her bowl and wrapped her arms around Hallitu, who broke down in tears. "There there," she said gently. "It's going to be alright. I'm sure that you'd have no problem finding a place to go."

"You could apprentice to a Craft," said Vedobin awkwardly. "I've been shadowing Beastcraft during my free time because if I don't Impress, I'd still love to work with animals."

Hallitu shook her head. "I-I don't know," she whispered, head still buried in Myracle's arms. "I don't know what I am--or who I should be."

"No no I insist," said Baridna, handing Kyniken a delicate dolphin-gray vase. "It's a gift!"

The young Beastcrafter shifted the vase in his arms uncomfortably. "Thank you," he said hesitantly. "What if the baby breaks it?" Word had spread like Thread that Pepper was finally pregnant and only a couple of months along. Pepper and Baridna had become close friends after the marriage with Kyniken, and she still remembered how Pepper had come crying to her during the day, wondering if there was anything wrong with her. Baridna had taken her to Camilla who had informed Pepper that...these things happened. And to eat well, get rest, and try to move on. After a few more incidents such as these, Pepper and Kyniken had simply kept the news quiet until Pepper had become visibly pregnant.

Baridna shrugged and chuckled. "I had to lock up everything in cabinets so that these three wouldn't constantly be stepping in glass shards."

"Hey," complained Jarshonen. "We're not that bad, right?" he asked with a pleading look at his siblings.

"Yeah," said Riziolke, placing her hand on Jar's shoulder. "It's that dimglow fire-lizard that always gets everywhere!"

Baridna rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, yeah" she said. "Whatever."

Kyniken chuckled. "Alright, come in, sit down," he said with a motion. "Mom's in the kitchen and Pepper is coming in soon." He turned and looked down at the vase. Baridna hoped that he would keep it, although certainly wouldn't have begrudged him if he sold it or gifted it elsewhere. Not all gifts were meant for the receiver to keep, unfortunately.

Gen burst into view, chittering with excitement. He settled on Baridna's shoulder and began meticulously grooming her hair, all the while sending her the images and emotions of a 'lizard mating flight. Though the Beastcrafters swore that fire-lizards were nothing more than animals, Baridna had never been completely sure for their emotions and thought processes were so open and so much more complex than might be expected from a bovine or a wherry.

"What's Gen saying?" asked Balidosh, leaning against his mother and stroking Gen gently on his flank.

"Telling me about this glorious mating flight that he is very upset at having lost," replied Baridna wryly. "We'll need to guard the firestone stores better because Gen is explicitly saying how he'd like to exact revenge."

Jar laughed. "Faranath but that's hilarious. I'd love to see him try." Gen turned towards the red-eyed teen and chittered. Jar made a face. "Blah blah blah," he replied. "Blah."

Kyniken reappeared--without the vase--and his face rose briefly. "Sit down!" he insisted. "The table's been set!" He herded the family towards the table. "Where's Boldosh?"

"Dad's still out on the water," Riz said, "but he said he'll be back before it's too dark."

Kyniken nodded sharply. "Alright."

The door creaked open and Pepper came in, Baxter perched on her shoulder. "Oh, hello!" she said with faint surprise. "I forgot for a moment," she said with a sheepish grin. The tiny avian on her shoulder chirped. "Baxter says hi, too."

Baridna grinned. Ever since word had trickled out that Pepper and her former villagemates were...something else, people had been asking what they could do, how they learned, if it was something anyone could do, and so on. Baridna herself would have loved to have even an inkling of the control over the elements that Pepper had, because she could only imagine what types of glassware she could have produced.

Miklo came into the room wearing a light purple shirt and blue jeans, an article of clothing that had been going in and out of fashion for decades. In her arms was a huge plate of wherry that she set down on the table. "If you don't sit down," she said sternly to Kyniken and Pepper, "I and that fire-lizard of hers," she said pointing to Gen, "will eat this. Without you." Baxter chirped and Miklo put her hand to her chest dramatically. "Of course, Baxter! You might not like the wherry but there's redfruit for you too."

Kyniken rolled his eyes. "Yes, mother," he sighed. "Come come, let's sit down."

The seven people--three household members and four guests--sat at the table and dug in. When Boldosh arrived, smelling of the sea and his long brown hair in a shorter bun than usual, he was welcomed and soon the house was filled with conversation and laughter.

It was luck, nothing more, that Seanni was at the Weyrling Barracks when Rosanth rose to mate. The first indication that something was off was Seanni's impression that Rosanth felt uncomfortable in her sleep.

"Darling,"[/color] murmured N'reg, catching Seanni as she stumbled. "What is it?"[/color]

Seanni shook her head as the flash of heat came over her again. "I'm not..." She sucked in her breath. "Scorchit," she said angrily. "This is--" Her eyes widened. "Signal the weyrhold! Rosanth's about to rise!"

N'reg swore and broke into a run towards the Barracks, where F'dust and the weyrlings had entered earlier. Seanni ran in the other direction, towards Rosanth, although was hindered by the flashes of heat and hunger she felt from the gold. "Notyetnotyetnotyet," she pleaded under her breath. She felt, rather than heard, Hosurth and Borinth landing with bovines carried in their claws. She spared a glance and saw that they had brought two. Just as she was thinking that it wasn't enough, Siarlith arrived with a third and Borinth was coming in again with a fourth. The weyrlings' dragons, though mature, had already been ushered away by Sedah and Zerith to prevent an inexperienced rider from taking control of the weyrhold. Not that anyone would accept them, mused Seanni as she murmured calming words to Rosanth. but it would still be chaotic.

One red eye slid open. Rosanth was hungry and she needed to eat now. She rose and roared a challenge to the world. Her human stood below and though something in the dragon yearned to curl around her human and perhaps her human's offspring, the hunger was more important.

Rosanth reared and rose into the air, just high enough to come at her prey--bovines--from above. She tore one open and as she was about to sink her teeth into it, felt a mental tug. BLOOD! the voice--her human--told her. Under the weight of the restriction, the gold screamed. She swung her head back and struck at the bovine's flesh. BLOOD! the voice from the bond came again. Rosanth screamed again, a cry filled with more rage than pain. But she was forced to obey and drank instead.

She pounced at another bovine, hoping to eat it but once again was thwarted by the voice. At the third, she no longer needed prompting but rather drank eagerly; the same occurred with the fourth. Now, she was eager to fly far and fast. With a push of her hind legs, she was up in the air. Not more than a few seconds later, she noted the flurry of brown and bronze and blue wings from below.

With a private chuckle of satisfaction, Rosanth increased the pace of her wingbeat in an effort to evade the males. She rose so high that she could almost touch the morning clouds and briefly angled herself to skim them. Cold brushed her wings and she saw that the males were gaining. They wanted to catch her? Well, she'd be a harder catch than they'd thought.

Rosanth tucked her wings in and dove, scattering the males. Had she not been saving her energy for the flight, she would have let loose a shriek of satisfaction. Only Predath had reacted to her in a manner that could be called "quick". She spread her wings and soared upwards once again. Well, he was her mate, wasn't he? But she was still full of energy and wanted to prove to the world why Predath was the only one worthy of her.

She slowed just enough to give the males a bit of hope as they caught up before doubling back and flying so quickly that she could hear Hosurth's quiet but plaintive cry of frustration as he spiraled downward, giving up on the chase. One down, one to go.

Rosanth looked behind her and felt a jolt of panic as she realized just how close she'd allowed the males to get. She beat her wings in a frantic attempt to gain altitude and was successful--but only for a moment. Predath crashed into her and she gave in, interlocking their claws and tail, and falling through the sky.

Seanni hummed with satisfaction as she rubbed Rosanth's belly with oil. Thank you, said Rosanth, closing her swirling eyes. The itch is gone.

Rosanth's belly still wasn't showing signs of pregnancy but Seanni wasn't worried; there was still several months to go before the eggs were laid. "Of course, dear heart," she murmured, putting a hand along the gold's leg.

"Seanni?" came a quiet voice from behind. Seanni turned and waved at Sedah to join her. "Thanks." The junior goldrider rubbed her pert nose and sighed. "This is probably Rosanth's last flight, isn't it."

Seanni shrugged and nodded. "I suppose. Maybe we've got one more in us. Do you think so, love?" she said with her face towards Rosanth. Rosanth's wings ruffled in a dragon-shrug. "I suppose it depends on how old I am when Zerith rises." Everyone knew that as the rider aged, the amount of risings a dragon had declined. Women--particularly greenriders--in their twenties and thirties would experience the most risings while those older than sixty rarely if ever experienced them. Some thought this was due to the rider while others argued that dragons aged slightly faster than humans. Whatever the cause, it had remained a consistent fact.

Sedah nodded, a faraway expression on her face. "I'm worried that Zerith won't have enough choices. There's Predath, but I'm pretty sure that he'd refuse to be with any other than Rosanth."

Seanni barked out a short laugh. "True enough. He's a romantic for sure."

"Kimorth, except I doubt that F'dust would let him do more than blow off steam. And I don't want to upset Soyah. Noneth is too young and I don't think that T'gin is mature enough. And...there's Hosurth."

Seanni winced. "Hosurth would be the worst," she agreed. Not because he was a blue--the rare bluerider Weyrleaders were always competent--but because Ze'ku, his rider, was Sedah's brother. "I can put in a request for a transfer," she said thoughtfully. "It would certainly be good for genetic diversity and it might help our current batch get some years of experience before anyone tries chasing queens."

"Thank you," said Sedah quietly. "I didn't want to bother you before..."

Seanni stood up and shook her finger at her junior. "Never think that you're bothering me. I thought you'd have learned that by now! This is a serious matter and I will do everything in my power to prevent it from becoming more of an issue."

Sedah quirked her lips. "Thank you," she repeated.

Renolla looked around at the sixteen people surrounding her. They were all the representatives of their various interests--master crafters, most of them--and had joined her to discuss the dwindling supplies of food. While crops grew well in the Southern climate and they were rarely lacking in farm and wild animals to eat, nonetheless their booming population was starting to strain their resources.

"Are we in agreement that we have an issue?" asked Renolla, quieting the conversation. Heads nodded and Kolu chirped. Renolla felt a pang of longing for Etasi, the faithful little gold who had passed away a few months ago. One moment, she was there, the next moment, the fire-lizards were keening. Renolla shook her head briefly to get rid of those thoughts. "Then we need to find a way to fix it."

"How?" asked Benny, hands propping her her head. "And do we really need to do anything? Crop yields are good, or so I've heard, and we get plenty of meat."

Jesni shook her head. "It's becoming more dangerous to go out on the waters. Me and the crew've been hearing odd music and fish is harder to come by." Boldosh nodded gravely in agreement. "I'd rather not risk our lives on a 'maybe we won't starve!' like it used to be."

"Ershar and Borrin are out in the fields," chimed in Thiolo, "working day and night to ensure a good harvest. And even then it's never guaranteed. Some turns, we get more and sometimes we get less."

Benny sighed. "Alright alright, I get it."

"We should start trading more," said Mairmun suddenly. "I have been reaching out to Mekhanikos and Cyrrane and I believe that they would be willing."

"They'd better," muttered Rabrusull with a quiet snort.

N'reg's lips curled with distaste and his hands flexed. "As much as I hate suggesting it," he said, "it might be time to bring back dragonrider punishments."

Renolla waved her hand, wanting to hear more. "Go on?"

"We could send out dragonriders to hunt for the Weyrhold. We used to do that in the founding days here."

Abesses barked out a laugh. "Those hunts went wrong almost twice as often as they went right," he said snidely. "And the new weyrlings haven't trained as Beastcrafters or had any experience with animals beyond skinning them for their dragons."

N'reg's eyebrows rose and fell. "That's why I hesitate to even propose it," he admitted. "High risk, most likely low reward."

"Bah, anything's worth a try if we get desperate enough," replied Abesses, reaching across the table to pat N'reg's hand. The Weyrleader jerked his hand back almost reflexively and his cup of klah nearly spilled.

"Trading is all well and good," Renolla said, "but do we have anything to sell?" There was silence for some moments. Then, Shollun spoke up.

"We have medicines," he said softly in his near-monotone. "And I'm sure that the Crafters have items they can sell. If all else fails, we can sell animals. Faranath knows we have enough fire-lizards flitting about." Even as he said it, his hand went to stroke Tirvam, the little lazy blue who lay on the table.

Baridna nodded in agreement. "I have a few nice glass pieces that I've been working on. I'm sure that Tigill can help me make a few more to sell in the market."

"Eshni can go with you," chimed in Wax. "I know that she's been itching for some adventure and I think that trading with protectorates might be good practice."

Baridna smiled and shrugged. "I don't personally plan on going but perhaps we could send a...team. A dragonrider, a Harper, a Crafter or two, and some Lower Caverns staff. Wasn't Kali part of a trading caravan once? And Greenrider Rorria was, too."

Sedah nodded. "I will need to talk with the Weyrwoman before sending out dragonriders--"

"I give my permission," interrupted N'reg.

"--but I'm sure that she will approve," Sedah concluded.

Renolla clapped her hands thrice to get everyone's attention. "We are in agreement, then?" she asked. "We cannot rely on steady yields of crops, fish, and other meats so we must increase trading with nearby settlements?" One by one, everyone agreed. "Excellent. Now how should we price our goods?"

One beat. Two beats. Three beats. Four beats. An unheard scream of terror. Frantic flailing that no one can feel. Breath seizing up in the throat. We're dead. I'm so sorry Nonny. And then sunlight.

Kimorth bellowed his anger as he emerged from between, clutching T'gin's Noneth by the riding straps. F'dust's face was red and Kimorth's eyes were swirling a starling shade of crimson. The gathered weyrlings below were huddling together, clutching each other and murmuring words of comfort.

"DO YOU SEE THIS?!?" roared F'dust as Kimorth descended. "DO YOU SEE HOW IMPORTANT VISUALIZATION IS? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES?"

Xarath cringed and K'ron turned to his blue, whispering something through their bond. Noneth let out a pitiful cry and F'dust turned his rage to the brown and his rider. "AND NONETH," he yelled, Kimorth's anger backing him, "HOW DARE YOU NOT CHECK WITH KIMORTH? HOW DARE YOU LET YOUR RIDER PUSH YOU BETWEEN WITHOUT A VISUALIZATION?"

I thought it'd be- Noneth tried to explain.

NO, said Kimorth with an angered rumble. Had firestone been regularly passed around, the older brown would be literally spitting flames. You always check with another dragon or rider. Somehow, the dragon managed to sound calmer than his rider although no one looking at his eyes would be fooled. Have you heard the story of the Benden Weyr rider? Weyrlings shook their heads and their dragons' eyes swirled with questions. During the Ninth Pass, Bronzerider F'lar and his compatriots found a young dragon and his rider entombed in the stones of Benden Weyr. Evidence suggests that this pair was D'lin and Aseth of the Third Pass, trying to warn Benden Weyr of the plague. Kimorth looked each dragon-rider pair in the eyes. This is what happens when you don't visualize properly. Best case scenario, we have to drag you out. Ofttimes, you will be lost and asphyxiate. Rarely, you will emerge into a place you never intended to go. Being entombed in stone where you will be found eventually is but one possibility. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? he roared, emphasizing his point with the verbal action.

"And you," said F'dust pointing to T'gin with a shaking finger, "will be banned from activities involving going between for a turn. At least. Until you get it through your thick skull that YOU MUST VISUALIZE PROPERLY BEFORE GOING BETWEEN!" He turned to the other weyrlings, noting N'kolas's trembling mouth, K'ron pressing himself up against Xarath, and Tutikko compulsively running her fingers through her hair. "Count yourselves lucky," he whispered, "that I'm letting the rest of you advance." He cleared his throat. "Now everyone back to the barracks. I will speak with you later."
