caoirigh tasted the air, taking a few steps into the camp. something about the smell of the air told her these cats were going to be quite the interesting bunch. instantly she spotted a small leopard like molly sitting off to the side. she appeared young and weak but something told caoirigh that she was quite the talented cat. the molly realizing the stare she stood up, stretched out her paws before bouncing her way over. despite the bounce and happiness in her step, she still felt the molly being slightly wary and cautious.

"good morning, i suppose you're the new cat fómhar said he would bring?" she meowed, eyeing up the new medicine cat. caoirigh nodded, letting her muscles relax. "well i'm liopard, i would have seen you earlier if naofa hadn't dragged me out of camp." she sarcastically rolled her eyes as she mentioned her friend.

"nice to meet you liopard, caoirigh at your service." the medicine cat purred in amusement as she dipped her head. "you've got quite the interesting territory. i've never experienced this many different scents." the tabby went off on a small tangent, stopping herself when she heard liopard let out a purr. letting her tail curl under her like an embarrassed kit she muttered an apology.

- "walk with me, let me tell you a little about our history caoirigh." -

bainne and paiste sat at the edge of the territory. the sound of the distant waves calmed them as they sat there, tails intertwined. they were reminiscing about the days in the original robinclan, giggling about the small mousebrained funny things the kits did, the stories the elders had to share, the time they spent training as apprentices and how much everyone had looked up to cait, the founder of the clan.

"i miss those days." bainne sighed, his ears drooping as he stared off into the distance at the beach they could slightly see through the trees. paiste gave his cheek a quick reassuring lick. "at least we are here now." paiste muttered, rubbing his muzzle into bainne's white scruff.

the two purred together, enjoying each others company. their silence was broken when they heard a rustling in the bushes. looking behind them they saw fómhar pushing his way through the foliage. he sat down beside a puddle, wrapping his tail around his paws. he dipped his head, closing his eyes.

they couldn't properly make out what he was saying, they could only catch certain words. something about his dads, cait, apologizing and something about the future. bainne and paiste shared a glance before quietly moving over to him. they stood at either side of him. shoulder to shoulder.

- "have hope in yourself fómhar." -

Hollowness was not a new feeling.
It surprised Midnightstream though, the fact that he felt hollow in the first place. He had known that the relationship with Emberwing wasn't working. For a long time, he had seen the cracks, the fissures, the chasm between them growing wider and wider. He had known, but he had said nothing; had simply grit his jaw and carried on. Maybe it was because he was afraid of what came after. Maybe he didn't want to be alone. Maybe Emberwing staved off the what-ifs for long enough for Midnightstream's head to be clear, but without her his mind was loud and foggy.
"You look tired," Midnightstream jumped, rolling over on the floor and sitting up quickly. Juniperstorm watched him, her expression cool and smooth like it always was. He knew other cats found it hard to read his big sister; she spoke evenly and her body language betrayed nothing. But he knew her. Even if it wasn't visible, the concern masked in her eyes made his pelt prickle knowingly.
"I was just-"
"Resting? In the elder's den?" Juniperstorm cocked her head, settling across from her brother and sweeping her tail over her paws.
"The warrior's den is too loud," Midnightstream said quietly, flicking his ears idly. He would not meet her eyes. Juniperstorm didn't say anything, and silence descended over them like a blanket. It's what he had always liked about Juniperstorm- she was quiet. She thought as much as he did, but the length of her stride was surer, the set of her shoulders stronger. It nagged at him that she was what he should have been. He should have been good.
"I'm sorry for what happened," she said, after a long moment, "you know... it's alright to be sad. About everything. About your kits, about Emberwing, about Hornetshade... about Twilightkit." Midnightstream's head snapped up. Juniperstorm chuckled, but there was no humour behind it. "You know, in these last few moons I've talked about her more than I ever have. I tried not to say so much because I knew how much it hurt you and how much you missed her, and I could see how broken our parents were. But... I was just a kit, we both were. We saw something horrible happen, and now I realized that I missed out on grieving because I was too busy bearing the burden for the rest of us."
"You were so strong for all of us. You didn't have to be. You shouldn't have to be."
"I know. The point is... I weather it, and sometimes I feel like collapsing under the weight, but I'd do it time and time again, let myself be crushed into the dirt by the weight of everything, if it meant that you could be happy and that you could be free. I miss her so much, Midnightstream. She was one of my best friends, my partner in crime, my sister. And even though I walk like I've forgotten and I talk like anything else is on my mind, I'm still sad, and you can be too, but you shouldn't be like me. You shouldn't have to go through it alone. So... don't shut me out, okay, dummy?" Midnightstream sniffed, and then surged forward, tucking his face into his sister's neck as she settled her chin on top of his head.
"I love you," he croaked out, "I don't say it nearly as much as I should, but I love you so much. I hope you never feel like I loved her more than you, because that's not true."
"We lost her. I understand. And I know. I love you too. Hey. Look at me." Midnightstream drew back, his eyes locking with Juniperstorm's fierce ones. "You'll always be my baby brother, and I would do anything to keep you safe. I love you more than the moon and the stars, more than the sun and the sky, and I'm gonna be here for you, a big shoulder that you can cry on when you need it. We're gonna get through this together, okay?"
"Okay," Midnightstream smiled, leaning their foreheads together, "will you stay here with me a while? I just want to rest." Juniperstorm nodded, and Midnightstream curled up on the debris-littered floor, uninhabited for moons now. Juniperstorm curled around him, sweeping her tail around his sleeping form. But even as Midnightstream dozed off, the swirling storm of worry did not quiet inside Juniperstorm's heart.

"Heya, kiddo," Strongpaw looked up, slight shoulders shivering against the chill. Leaf-bare was sloping off now, the snow coming less regularly and coating in thinner layers, but the windy nights were still bitterly cold. Still, Strongpaw needed to be away from the apprentice den for a bit; it was loud in there, with Redpaw and Beepaw arguing incessantly, and the quiet conversations that occurred between other members of the den. There was too much in her head to be able to think there, and so she sat, sheltered just barely in the tunnel.
Dusklight shook a thin coating of snow from his pelt, his eye glinting curiously as he titled his head at his apprentice. Next to him, Gorseberry huddled into his shoulder, clearly having come up from QuickClan for the night. Strongpaw had heard rumors that the senior medicine cat in their ally clan was almost as cranky as Goldleaf, and she was surprised that he'd agreed to let Gorseberry be so far away from his clan for a night, but there was a tiredness in the blue tom's eyes that Strongpaw took to mean he probably needed Dusklight's company right now.
"Hey, why don't you go say hello to Dawnblossom in the nursery? Mousestone will probably be with her," Dusklight touched his nose to his mate's cheek, and Gorseberry nodded tiredly, "I'll be along in a second."
"You better be." Gorseberry licked his cheek as a goodbye, smiling tiredly at Strongpaw as he passed, into the GroveClan camp. Dusklight gave his apprentice a little smile, settling down across from her. His broad frame acted as an effective windblock, and Strongpaw blinked up at him; still in awe of just how large Dusklight was in the first place. They were silent for a moment. Strongpaw knew he was waiting, just letting her orient herself. She took a deep breath.
"Is it my fault?"
"What?"
"My parents," she sniffed, "everyone knows what happened and everyone's talking about it. Mates have never broken up in GroveClan before, and everyone stares at me even more now. I can feel the way they pity me, and I hear them talk about the time 'before'. Before me. Before all of this. So is it my fault, what happened to my parents?" When she could finally meet Dusklight's eye, the tom looked sad, and she was on the verge of tears, struggling to keep them in.
"No," he said firmly, gently wrapping his tail around her and hugging her close to his strong form, "Strongpaw, sweetie, don't you ever think that again, alright? Your parents love you both very much, and they've tried their best to protect you and to nurture you and that means keeping you out of what's going on between them. The truth is... they haven't been good together for a while. Their mateship came as a surprise, and the strain of losing as many kits as they did... it's a lot. Honestly, this is probably better for them- they're good friends, but they don't work romantically. Sometimes it happens like that. I know that right now what's important to both of them is their daughter, and they're doing everything they can to make sure that you're safe, happy, and supported, and they have to do what's best for themselves, too, which means being apart in this instance."
"Everything's going to change," Strongpaw hiccuped, shaking her head, "everything's going to be different now."
"Change is part of life- as intrinsic as the moon and the sun. See how the seasons change? And how carrion changes to dirt and then to life? How the water of the lake turns to ice and back? Tadpoles turn to frogs and caterpillars to butterflies? We can't stop change. The best we can do is flow with it, like a river's current, and swim with it, not against it. It's scary, but just know you have parents who love you, grandparents who adore you, and friends who'll watch over you and have your back no matter what. You're not going through this alone, okay? I'm going to be here, too, right alongside you, for a long time yet." Dusklight smiled, touching noses with his apprentice. She sniffed.
"It won't be a long time. I'm going to be a great apprentice." Dusklight laughed out loud.
"Attagirl, that's the spirit," he stood, gently nudging her to her feet with his tail. "Now come on, what do you say we go see Dawnblossom and Adderstorm? I'm sure they'd be delighted to see you."

"Can't even get one night of peaceful sleep," Runningpaw grumbled, tucking his face more firmly against Sunpaw's flank as the other tom groomed between his ears comfortingly. While most of the apprentices were neatly tucked into their nests, Sunpaw and Redpaw were nose to nose in the middle of the den, bickering loudly. What they were bickering about their brothers couldn't be sure; Redpaw had asked about training, Beepaw had said something that had made Redpaw snap back, and a shouting match had ensued.
"If Juniperstorm comes in here I'm not going to stop her from ripping off your ears," Brindlepaw threatened, but it fell on deaf ears, the two ginger toms seeming adamant on rousing the entirety of the clan from their sleep. There was a rustling at the entrance to the den and the rest of the apprentices froze, relaxing only slightly as Dusklight made his way into the den. With a swift paw, he knocked Redpaw and Beepaw away from each other, sending them scattering across the floor.
"Hey, boneheads, knock it off," he snapped, "there are cats trying to sleep and queens who need beauty rest and if they're sleep deprived thanks to you when they deliver their kits, you will have wrath to face and by StarClan will you regret it. You're both talented young toms, sometimes training doesn't go so well, and if I have to come in here again I'm going to make you run laps around the camp until you're too tired to yell at each other, is that clear?"
"Yes," Redpaw griped, and Beepaw nodded firmly. Dusklight gave them a stern look, but his maw twitched in amusement as he turned and exited the den. Strongpaw cast a glance back at her denmates, shook her head, and then bounded after her mentor, having to run to keep up with his long strides.
"When are you going to learn?" Brindlepaw asked them, shaking her head.
"He started it!" Beepaw complained, and Redpaw groaned.
"For the last time, asking if you were okay after training is because I was concerned, not because I wanted to gloat about being better than you or whatever but if that's what you want me to do then I will since you're so insistent on it."
"Do not start again," Eclipsepaw warned, groaning and sinking into her nest as Beepaw raised his hackles, paw lifting.
"Oh, you want to bet? Why don't you test me right here and now?"
"Enough!" Tallpaw's tail lashed. "I've had a long day, and I'm tired. Beepaw, get back in the nest or else I'm going to make Mom come and get you to sleep in the elder's den." No one moved, so Tallpaw hissed, and the boys immediately scattered toward their nests, curling up sullenly.
"Finally," Runningpaw sighed, "now everyone shut up and go to sleep."

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,

"When I think about my friends who would have been having kits at the same time as me," Dawnblossom said, "your face is not the one that I pictured." Sedgefire laughed, closing her eyes contentedly as the ginger molly groomed between her ears. Across the camp, Wolverinejaw was helping Adderstorm take a walk around camp, the wiry molly close to having her kits. Goldleaf had the younger two medicine cats hovering near, convinced that she would be giving birth in just a few hours.
"To be honest? Neither. I always supposed it would be you who'd have kits first, and then probably Mousestone and Novella. I think I got lucky with finding people- my dad, my brothers, my mom. I didn't think I'd find the right girl too, let alone the right surrogates. And now we get to be here together, too, so neither of us get to complain about being stuck inside while the other is cavorting about on patrols."
"And hey, at least you're in the nursery during Newleaf, which means you'll be allowed out around the camp and not hiding from the elements inside," Dawnblossom purred, "plus Archie's in every afternoon which means you'll have someone to bully so you don't get bored." Sedgefire snorted.
"You're hilarious."
"I know. But seriously... I'm glad you're here. This is gonna be fun!"
"Sure. Fun." Sedgefire chuckled, smiling up at her mate as she and Adderstorm crossed toward them. "Finished terrorizing the poor molly, are you?"
"I'll have you know I've been a supremely polite and courteous escort and you can shut your maw." Wolverinejaw leaned down to lick her mate's forehead, initiating a purr that Sedgefire returned. Adderstorm carefully settled herself near Dawnblossom, giving the pair of black mollies a fond smile. Sedgefire turned her piercing gaze to Adderstorm with a curious look.
"Oh, she was alright. Still a little broody but what else would you expect?" Wolverinejaw scoffed, before the four of them laughed, loud enough to draw Mousestone from the medicine den, pelt shining in the light as she crossed to them.
"Having fun over here, ladies?"
"Always," Dawnblossom grinned, "but we always have room for one more."

"Harepuddle!" The small tom paused, looking around for the source of the voice. Pinefeather's was one of the more distinctive in the clan, and although it took Harepuddle a few seconds to spot his dark shape slinking out from the shadows toward him, Roseclaw following after him attentively, he'd known who was calling to him the whole while. He paused, with a polite smile, his tail curling over his back as the Burmese tom pressed his nose to his cheek in greeting.
"Hi, Pinefeather, Roseclaw. What can I do for you?" The two toms exchanged a glance, and Roseclaw rumbled a kind chuckle.
"How would you like to take a walk with us?" Harepuddle nodded, and together, the three toms set out into the Newleaf night. The chill of Leafbare was fading and the breeze was more bracing while the air was warmer, and Harepuddle quite enjoyed it. GroveClan was overall more refreshing than his old clan had been, and it was nice to be able to wander without much fear. Roseclaw and Pinefeather walked shoulder to shoulder, with Harepuddle slightly offset from the smaller tom, watching the pair of them curiously. It had always intrigued him how they'd seemed to be able to communicate completely nonverbally. Finally, Roseclaw cleared his throat.
"This is... well, I suppose it's not confidential, but maybe new information is better. As I'm sure you're aware, I'm getting older now, and while Pinefeather still has many moons of service left in him, as do I, Lionheart is starting to fret about us taking it easier, so I was hoping that before I fully retire, I might be able to take a break. So... Pinefeather and I have been discussing the possibility of having another litter, that I would stay in the nursery with. We were wondering... if you'd be okay with being our surrogate." Harepuddle stopped, shocked by the request.
"I- wow! That's exciting news, for both of you," Roseclaw chuckled while Pinefeather purred, "but... why me? I know we're not exactly the closest you could get, and I thought maybe you'd like to have the same molly from HazeClan surrogate for you."
"Dappledwillow is lovely," Pinefeather said with a nod, "but HazeClan has been through so much recently, and we don't want to put more strain on them than necessary. We were mostly looking for a way that Roseclaw could get a taste of semi-retirement by becoming a 'queen' in name only, looking after the kits while they were in the nursery, so you would be able to return to your warrior duties after the kits were weaned, if you'd like."
"That's really nice of you two to ask me, I'm honoured," Harepuddle's eyes sparkled a little, "of course I'd love to help you two expand your family. Consider it a done deal." Pinefeather gave an excited purr, darting forward to rub his forehead against Harepuddle's as the other tom laughed.
"Thank you!"
"Really, Harepuddle, thank you so much."
"It's not a problem," Harepuddle smiled at them, before nodding in the direction of the lake, "now let's continue our walk, shall we?"

The sun shone high over GroveClan territory as the hunting patrol progressed through the trees in the north of the territory. Newleaf had swung in with a vengeance like it was apt to do, sun warming the pelts of the cats. Burningcloud and Silvermoon walked at the back of the group, chatting amicably between the two about Flintburr's impending retirement. At the front of the group, Maplefall and Halfpond had struck out, discussing potential kit names for Dawnblossom's litter, due to be born soon. In the middle of the pairs, Stonepatch and Fawnrunner kept even step, pelts brushing companionably. The small molly looked up to see her mate staring at her fondly.
"What?" She laughed.
"I forgot the way the sun makes your pelt look," Stonepatch smiled, "normally, I believe you to be the prettiest molly alive, but when the sun shines on your fur and turns it to liquid like this, I become convinced and no one could ever persuade me any different." Fawnrunner laughed again, bright and happy as she stretched to nuzzle her head under his jaw.
"You are so sappy," she purred, "and I love you for it."
"I love you too," he paused for a beat, looking serious, "you know, all that time ago when the kits were kidnapped... fighting off those cats, there was a moment where I was worried that I would never get to say that to you again. But I survived, and I'm here, and I got to watch our absolutely fantastic kits grow up. They take after you, you know." Fawnrunner snorted, leaning on his shoulder. "Back then, I thought that I should have said it sooner, should have told you sooner so that I would have been able to say it more times. I wasn't even afraid for my life; I was just afraid I'd never have the opportunity to let you know that you're my whole world, and then some."
"More than the moon and the stars, right?"
"And the sun and the sky," he touched noses with his mate, the little molly purring loudly as he reciprocated the motion. Her tail twined with his, and they looked up to watch Maplefall tipping her head back to laugh while Halfpond ducked his own shyly, as if he was trying to stifle the laughter. Always so shy, always so composed, with a smaller presence than the big tom at Fawnrunner's side. She sighed contentedly, leaning against him.
"I thought I'd lost my family. And then I found Dusklight and Dawnblossom again, and that was good, but I never expected to find someone that I loved as much as I love you. I didn't expect that I would find my soulmate, but here you are."
"Here I am," he said gently, licking between her ears, "and don't you worry- I'm not going anywhere for a long time yet."

- expect some julius and sparrowtail content as the newest PC members.

- oatfur and arnicatail fluff ensures as the latter chastises her clumsy mate for somehow getting his tail sprained.

- knollkit apprentice ceremony fluff!! juniper being the proudest dad ever and orchid sending their brother egret to find firestream so that their whole friend group can see it. egret experiences a gay panic throughout the whole search.

- ryeheart flaunting her new warrior name to her siblings and parents, as the sibs separate to do their own thing, daisystorm pokes fun of how big bad larkclaw softens up towards her kits. the two share a long discussion of their unconventional "relationship", as larkclaw posed as their father throughout their whole lives even though he didn't need to. daisystorm admits that she never minded, and in fact always thought of him as her mate even though they've never made their relationship official, and larkclaw responds that he's thought the same of her in turn. mayhapeth they'll have some kits of their own eventually

- goshawkpaw angst as she, along with her siblings, visit their mother and younger siblings in the nursery before they're off to complete their final ceremonies. while shuri appears happy, goshawk knows that she's still grieving over the deaths of crowkit and luciakit and bites down anger that her father isn't here. angst turns into hurt/comfort as her pal ferretpaw expresses his own frustration that vervaincloud won't see him off and the two grow a little closer through their conflicted relationship with their fathers.

- poppypaw tags along with blissheart for some basic warrior training. poppy opens up about his past with the warrior after some unsuccessful attempts lead to a break. blissheart also experiences how well shadeleaf's apprentice can read a cat firsthand, as poppy asks blissheart directly if he loves her.

- rowanpelt asks to speak with both mintstar and duckfoot about what he considers a serious matter. which would be his possible resignation as deputy, after the two are shocked by his words, rowan explains that as much as he loves pineclan, he never felt worthy of leading it. and with his mate and one of his kits here, he'd rather prefer bonding with them now since he never got the chance to be by velvet's side or see lemontail grow up. mintstar understands, but she asks that they keep this under wraps until she narrows down who rowan's successor will be. the deputy offers up minkcloud as a suggestion before he leaves.
