Echopaw crouched with Reedpaw and Minnowpaw. “A rogue!” Echopaw breathed, exchanging a wide eyed look with the brothers. “I’ve never met a rogue before!” Reedpaw murmured, eyes gleaming with curiosity. “I wonder what a rogue is like,” Minnowpaw added, unsheathing his claws as if he was already imagining his first battle. Echopaw tilted her head, her eyes gleaming as an idea popped into her mind. “What if we went out and handled the rogue?” She said, her voice lowering so that only the other two apprentices could hear her. Reedpaw and Minnowpaw shot each other startled glances, surprised by Echopaw’s suggestion. Reedpaw frowned, glancing around the cave, ensuring that the nearest cats were too far away to hear. “By ourselves?” He asked, quickly glancing away from Cloudpool when he accidentally met the medicine cat’s gaze as he passed through the clearing. “Of course!” Echopaw replied enthusiastically. “I know it seems dangerous but with all three of us, we could do it!” Minnowpaw grinned, sinking his claws into the ground below. “That’s a great id-,” He was cut off by Reedpaw. Shaking his head, Reedpaw mewed, “we just became apprentices! None of us even know how to fight!” He protested. “Hawkfeather would be furious! So would your mentors!” The apprentice pointed out, his gaze flicking between the two nervously. Echopaw seemed unconcerned but after a moment, the black and white molly sighed, looking over the clearing before her blue eyes rested on Moonpaw. The last of the older apprentices were taking their assessments and the only other apprentice who could fight was Moonpaw. “Fine, we’ll take Moonpaw with us. We probably won’t even have to fight. Just the three of us alone are intimidating enough to scare off any rogue but if it helps you feel better, we’ll take Moonpaw.” Echopaw declared, narrowing her eyes at the younger apprentices. Reedpaw hesitated but Minnowpaw, already imagining the heroic celebration their clanmates would give them, nudged him eagerly. “Come on Reedpaw! Think about it! We’ll be heroes!” He crowed, his eyes shining. “You aren’t scared are you?” The very idea that he could be scared made Reedpaw immediately shake his head. Lifting his head, Reedpaw puffed his chest out, trying to pretend that fear was the last thing he felt. “No. Not at all. Let’s go.” Satisfaction flashed in Echopaw’s eyes and she nodded. Beside him, Minnowpaw grinned. “Yes! It’ll be fine Reedpaw, you’ll see! We’re going to be heros!”
Grey and Rippleshade were likely to have a new denmate soon, Cloudpool reflected as he padded from the elders den back towards the medicine den. He’d left Mosspaw to help Shellpaw clean out their nest and as he’d done so, he’d noticed Emberslash with Rowanfur, helping to encourage the warrior to eat some freshkill. Her sons took turns caring for her, as did Silvernose and Shimmerpelt. Slowly, Rowanfur was recovering but the molly had been slowing down even before Morningstar’s sickness. It wouldn’t be long before she joined Rippleshade and Grey in their den. Cloudpool made a note to speak to the red tabby later but until then, perhaps there was a more pressing situation he would have to deal with. Reedpaw had a guilty expression on his face as the gray and white apprentice looked away. Cloudpool knew that look. That guilty expression spelt trouble. He frowned, realizing that along with Minnowpaw, his daughter, Echopaw, was there. Cloudpool would try to keep an eye on them but he had patients to keep an eye on. Pepperspark, Ferngaze, and his beloved mate Dappleleaf. The two young warriors were healing well, as was Dappleleaf. He’d already let them out of the medicine den to sleep in their own nests after making them promise to come to him everyday for checkups and not to leave camp so they could rest. Pepperspark and Ferngaze had already come to him for their daily checkups and Dappleleaf waited inside the medicine den for him. As he slipped in, the calico molly greeted him with a delighted purr. With Mosspaw in the elders den, it was just Cloudpool and Dappleleaf together in the medicine den. The gray tom nuzzled her, fond and loving. “Well mister medicine cat, how am I doing?” She asked, her tone light and mischievous. Cloudpool smirked, giving her an amused glance. “Let’s just say that I might have to keep you here in the medicine den for- '' As light pawsteps sounded at the entrance, Cloudpool fell quiet and took a step away from his mate. Hastily, as Mosspaw came in, he said, “Good. That cut is looking much better.” He wasn’t sure if the gray apprentice noticed as she said, “The elder’s are taken care of. Rippleshade was complaining about the cold making his joints ache though.” Cloudpool nodded, doing his best to maintain his professionalism in front of the apprentice. “His joints ache as it starts getting cold. Take a few of the apprentices out to find some extra moss and feathers for their dens and we’ll make sure to keep an eye on him.” He told her, an idea sparking in his mind. “Echopaw, Reedpaw, and Minnowpaw don’t seem too busy. Please go let them know that I’ll be taking you all out.” Cloudpool told Mosspaw. She nodded and as she went to let the other three know about their new task, Cloudpool turned back to his mate. Dappleleaf watched him with quiet pride and love. “Four apprentices can be a lot to handle by yourself. I know you want me to rest, but it would be nice to go with you.” At Cloudpool’s worried glance, she added teasingly, “I won’t even help with the moss gathering. It would just be nice to spend time with you.” She purred. Before Cloudpool could respond, Mosspaw returned looking worried. “I can’t find them. They’re not in camp.” Cloudpool frowned and nodded, thinking quickly. “Did you check all the dens?” He asked. “Just the apprentices den. Moonpaw’s gone too.” “We’ll check the rest of camp and if we can’t find them, we’ll let Harestar and Sunstripe know.” He told her, but the medicine cat had a suspicion that they wouldn’t find the apprentices anywhere in camp. His suspicions were soon confirmed and Cloudpool sighed. He’d known a guilty apprentice when he saw one. He should’ve confronted the three the moment he’d seen them. “We’ll find them, don’t worry.” He murmured to Dappleaf, who had begun pacing the camp. “Let’s go talk to Harestar.” Cloudpool led the small group towards the leader’s den, trying his best to stamp down his own worry for his daughters.
“The hard part’s over with!” Echopaw declared once they’d gotten out of camp without being noticed. “Silvernose told Harestar that they scented the rogue near the twoleg den.” She grinned at the three apprentices with her, ignoring the worried looks on Reedpaw and Moonpaw’s expressions. “Let’s go then!” Minnowpaw crowed, leading the way while Echopaw dropped back in place to walk with Moonpaw. Her sister was indeed nervous but like always, Moonpaw was not about to challenge Echopaw. As harebrained as it felt to Moonpaw, Echopaw was smart. She wouldn’t have drawn Reedpaw and Minnowpaw out of camp unless she was sure they’d be fine. “This is going to be so much fun, isn’t it!?” Echopaw practically squealed eagerly. Moonpaw blinked, startled. “Fun is one word I guess? I’m scared. I’m the only one who can fight! Echopaw this is stupid.” The black and white molly paused, blinking at Moonpaw and mewing, “I thought you wanted to do this? We’ll be heroes, like Minnowpaw said.” Moonpaw shook her head. “We should go back, Echopaw. This is too dangerous!” Before Echopaw could answer, however, Reedpaw and Minnowpaw were frozen, the scent of their fear drifting back towards the sisters. “The rogue!” Echopaw’s eyes widened and Moonpaw stiffened. “Go back to camp and get help!” Echopaw hesitated a moment, glancing towards Reedpaw and Minnowpaw, before dashing back the way they’d come. Moonpaw caught up to Reedpaw and Minnowpaw, and shifted the younger apprentices behind her. Fur bristling, ears flat against her head, the calico hissed. She’d protect Reedpaw and Minnowpaw as long as she had too but hopefully a patrol would come by soon.
