- 𝕠𝕟𝕖 𝕞𝕠𝕠𝕟 𝕒𝕘𝕠,
"Okay but are you excited?" Squirrelwhisker laughed, lightly pushing his sister's shoulder with his own to try and dart out of her way, but Hazelskip was quicker, blocking his exit and looking up at him with an expectant blink. Exasperated, Squirrelwhisker turned back to his father for help, but Hawkthorn only rumbled a chuckle where he was keeping pace with Quailberry, the younger tom staring at Hazelskip fondly.
"Just answer the question, Squirrelwhisker, she's only excited," Woodbloom said from the back of the group, where she had been speaking to Cormorantpath, the younger tom doing his best to politely keep his amusement off his face. Squirrelwhisker simply rolled his eyes, but he couldn't keep a smile from his face as Hazelskip gave a triumphant hum, falling into step with her brother.
"Yes, I'm excited," he said, "I don't know who wouldn't be, about having kits with someone they love. It's taken Adderstorm and I a while to get here... but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I know she's not particularly thrilled about being confined to the nursery, so after the first few moons, when the kittens can eat solid food, I'm going to be taking her place in the nursery so she can go back to active duty," the declaration seemed to surprise Hawkthorn, whose ears perked up.
"I didn't know you'd talked about that," he said, "you usually tell your mother and I everything."
"It wasn't really something Adderstorm wanted broadcasted. I think she thought that cats would judge her for it, especially when Lionheart made it the whole way through her pregnancy and their kithood, but... well. If I can do anything to make things easier for her, I will, because that's what you do for cats that you love. I know this will make her more comfortable, and I think it made things easier on Lionheart to know that Ashenstrike was still out there doing his thing because she trusts him... but Adderstorm doesn't have the same obligations, and I'm happy to stay in the nursery for a bit. I like Dawnblossom well enough."
"And who knows who else will be in the nursery with you!" Hazelskip enthused, her tail raised like a banner. "It's so exciting, it's getting to the time of year where romance blooms, and you can't help but wonder whether you'll be in the nursery with Maplefall, or maybe with Morninglight, or, you know, anyone else! Maybe even Mom and Dad-" Hawkthorn coughed a little, laughing to cover up his surprise.
"That's a nice thought, darling, but your mother and I are happy with what we have- three wonderful kits, although you're all a pawful."
"I'm not that bad," Squirrelwhisker protested.
"You play too aloof, it's a good thing your sisters got your mother's energy and your aunt's enthusiasm because otherwise you'd have no one to show you how to let loose a little bit, and you'd end up like a worse version of me, always worrying and fretting and never getting to have any fun." Squirrelwhisker huffed as Hazelskip stuck out her tongue at him with a lilting laugh, bounding forward a little to stretch out, the Leafbare sun turning her coat fiery red, like her mother's.
"Well, I guess the next kits in the family will have to be mine-" beside Hawkthorn, Quailberry jolted, seeming alarmed, "-when I find the right cat. I don't want to rush it, but I like the idea of being a mother, but I think I'd go nuts if I had to spend the whole time in the nursery on my own, so other cats would have to be having kits too." Hawkthorn let out a relieved laugh.
"For a second you scared me into thinking we had another Woodbloom situation on our paws-"
"Hey!"
"-but I'm glad you have such a level head about it, baby. The truth of the matter is your mother is an excellent parent, and I like to think I'm alright too, so being excellent parents is in your blood, and as you can see your big sister has done so well at raising her daughters, too. Squirrelwhisker, you're going to make a great dad, and Adderstorm is lucky to have you looking out for her. Hazelskip, you're going to make a great mother too..." he paused, casting a smile at Quailberry, that the tom was too busy staring at the Somali molly to notice "... one day, when you meet the right cat."
✦
Flintspark hit the ground on his shoulder, using the momentum of the bounce that followed to twist himself midair and land back on his paws. His shoulder prickled to the right, and the ducked left just as a whoosh of air indicated that Sleetbreeze's paw had flown past where he'd been just a second before. His whiskers twitched, and he darted forward, shoulder dropped low before he pressed upward. Sleetbreeze let out a surprised 'oof' as the knock carried him off his paws, and Flintspark leaped onto him, pinning him down.
"Nice one!" Peckernose called from the sidelines with a cheerful laugh.
"QuickClan wins, that means you have to help me organize the herbs now," Gorseberry's amused voice lifted over Dusklight's groaned complaint, barely stifled laughter escaping a moment later as the sound of their paws on the ground indicated to Flintspark that the pair were moving off. He heard Kererucall's rumbling purr, heard the tell-tale sound of her tail sweeping across the ground as she pulled it across her paws.
"You've progressed very well, Flintspark, and that was excellent work. Whatever Sleetbreeze says, I'm very happy with what you're learning, and at this rate you'll be as prolific a fighter as you were when you still had your sight. We'll take a break for a while, make sure you have something to eat and to drink, and walk around the camp a few times to keep your muscles stretched out."
"Of course," he said, with a nod, ear twisting to listen as the molly got up, moving toward where Autumnpaw had patiently been waiting her turn with Alpinemask. The GroveClan molly had been right- his issue was one that Autumnpaw didn't possess; unlike him, she had been born blind, and she'd never been able to rely on sight. For Flintspark, the main problem was learning how to trust his other senses and stop relying on sight that wasn't there. Once he had been able to relax into the knowledge, the world had come into vibrant focus with his other sense that seemed sharper, compensating for what he'd lost.
"You can get off me now," Sleetbreeze said, making Flintspark jerk his head down, just in time for the GroveClan tom to cheekily press a paw upward under his jaw, making Flintspark grunt with the effort of trying to keep his jaw solidly in place, "or don't, I actually quite like the view."
"You're terrible," Flintspark said, releasing the slender tom from underneath him. Sleetbreeze rolled back to his paws, and shook out his coat, although fur that Flintspark had been able to gauge as 'short' didn't really get much caught in it in the first place.
"And you like me so much," Sleetbreeze teased in response, "or you wouldn't keep asking Kererucall to bring me on these trips when you know I'm so super busy with an apprentice." Flintspark rolled his unseeing eyes, nudging Sleetbreeze's shoulder with his own as the pair of them set out on their walk around the camp to keep loose.
"I don't keep asking Kererucall to bring you along, you keep inviting yourself-"
"Because I know you'd be absolutely devastated at the loss of my honeyed tones and charming humour, so devastated in fact that you would simply take nest in the medicine den and dramatically refuse to rise until I relieved you of the pain of being apart." Flintspark couldn't help but laugh at that, as Sleetbreeze laughed his half-manic giggle. He hadn't known the tom long, but he didn't mind that Sleetbreeze seemed so intent on inviting himself along. He didn't treat Flintspark like he was fragile, he could hold his own in a battle of wits against Autumnpaw and he was unreserved and unabashed in every sense of the word.
"No comment. You don't need a bigger ego than you already have."
"You're no fun! I tell you you're handsome at least once every sun-shift, the least you could do is tell me that I'm the only tom for you and that you would be absolutely lost without the pure joy that I bring to your otherwise monotonous life, and that you're positively charmed at the prospect as a tale as romantic as that of the medicine cat and the one-eyed warrior from the clan across the lake... oooor the weird pining happening between Redstar Junior and my brother."
"Yeah, the difference is you don't mean it when you say things like that, and I do." Flintspark rolled his eyes, yowling a little in surprise as Sleetbreeze cuffed him around one air, nimbly jumping out of immediate reach with a smug purr.
"Who says I don't mean it? Did losing your eyesight mean you gained the ability to read minds?"
"Well, no-"
"Then I suppose my level of sincerity will be a secret for me to know and for you to find out, won't it?" Sleetbreeze asked, with a lilting laugh, before he bounded away from Flintspark, in the direction of a cat whose scent the blind tom recognized as Cardinalheart's. This didn't surprise him; whenever Sleetbreeze wasn't particularly attached to Flintspark's hip, he'd taken to cheerfully aggressive attempts to befriend a bewildered Cardinalheart, often out of his depth but trying desperately to keep up with the wiry tom.
"You don't mean it!" Flintspark called after him, but even as the words came out of his mouth, even missing Sleetbreeze's smirking smile over his shoulder, Flintspark was already beginning to doubt it.
✦
"Again?" Hissed Pebblebird, putting both paws over his face as Pitchrunner dragged himself out of his nest, nudging Flamescorch. Blearily, the boys got to their paws, listening to the yelling from the apprentice den, echoing out of the mouth of their den and into the warrior's own. Redpaw and Beepaw had been insatiable since they'd moved back into a den together, this time without their mothers to separate them. With Maplefall in the leader's den with Badgerstar, and Sandcatcher and Avocetnose trying to sleep for patrols, the youngest siblings had taken it upon themselves to quiet disputes.
The three of them exited the den with triplet apologetic smiles to an annoyed looking Ripplemist as he ducked back into the den from the dirt place. The three brothers exchanged a look, before they hurried to the apprentice's den and ducked inside. Voices immediately overlapped one another- Eclipsepaw and Brindlepaw trying to reason with their brothers to stop tussling, while Tallpaw hissed warnings about gutting both of them for interrupting her sleep, and Poppypaw snapped that they were going to get all of them into trouble. Sunpaw, Brightpaw, and Runningpaw, simply looked bleary, trying to curl into a bundle of ginger fur together again.
"What is wrong with you two?" Pebblebird snapped. "Stop it!" Redpaw yowled and tackled Beepaw back to the ground, sinking his teeth into his ear as the younger tom hissed and spat. Pebblebird cast an incredulous look at his twin and his bewildered younger brother, before turning back to face the girls.
"It's no use," Brindlepaw said with a sigh that turned into a yawn, "they won't listen to reason. We've tried everything, and it's not like the boys have been any help." She glared at the ball of ginger fur that constituted the male apprentices. Runningpaw raised his head, blinking blearily at the others before he shrugged, lightly.
"Brindlepaw and Eclipsepaw are oodles scarier than either of us, if Beepaw and Redpaw won't listen to them then they're not going to listen to us, and probably not to you either."
"No, I've got this," Flamescorch assured them, stepping forward to snatch Redpaw by the scruff, and drop him hard on his butt, "if you two don't quit it and go to bed, I'm going to send Juniperstorm in here, and then you'll be sorry." Silence immediately descended over the den. Redpaw and Beepaw fumed, glaring at each other, but they said nothing. "I don't care who started it or what it was about, I just know that if I get woken up again tonight or any other night, I'm going to start organizing punishment to fit the crime and that punishment will be Juniperstorm. Both of you apologize."
"Sorry," snapped Redpaw.
"Sorry," Beepaw said through gritted teeth.
"Not very sincere but I'll take it," Flamescorch said, "we're all going back to bed. One more peep and Juniperstorm will be in here and mark my words, she will not be happy." He gave the apprentices stern glares, before he and his brothers turned and trailed out of the den. Beepaw sniffed, and then immediately turned, stamping back to Tallpaw and Poppypaw and climbing into the nest with them Redpaw whirled on his heel and stomped toward Brindlepaw and Eclipsepaw, who shifted over to make room for him.
"I don't know what your issue is with him," Brindlepaw said, "but it's stupid and it needs to stop."
"He's just so infuriating! I don't even do anything and he's always picking fights with me and telling me he's better than me and just being annoying and boastful all the time. I get it, he wants praise or whatever but he can go to Sunpaw for that because I don't care." Brindlepaw gave an exasperated sigh as Eclipsepaw curled up against her back.
"Whatever, Redpaw, he probably just wants you to think he's cool and you're reading way too much into it and getting upset over nothing." The tom blinked.
"I can't believe you'd defend him! What, do you have a dumb crush on him or something?" Brindlepaw rolled her eyes and sneered at him as she settled down.
"Oh yeah, I super duper do," she said, "shut up and go to sleep." She tucked her head against her friend's flank, and even as Redpaw settled down, looking across the nests to where Beepaw's baleful eyes were glaring back at him, before they quickly darted away, Redpaw wasn't sure why that statement made him feel beyond sick.
𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"Everyone's staring," Strongkit said, feeling the eyes of her clanmates prickling down her spine from where she sat between her mother and her father. Emberwing's spine was rigid, Midnightstream seemed hunched. Neither seemed too happy about being there, even as her grandfather stepped out along the bough of the willow tree to conduct her apprentice ceremony. The words were a plea for some kind of reassurance, but both her parents simply turned toward her and gave her smiles that were meant to be comforting, but seemed a second away from grimaces.
"Thank you all for gathering," Badgerstar said with a smile, drawing his granddaughter's attention, "apprentice ceremonies are always so exciting to me. The first time I had to conduct one, I was so nervous about getting it wrong, but not as nervous as I was about giving Flowershine her warrior name. Now, I look forward to these ceremonies as signs of growth, times where I can re-evaluate myself and look at how far I've come; how far the whole clan has come since then, and use them as reminders of our future, that the legacy of this clan lives on in our kits, and in our grandkits." He smiled at Strongkit, who beamed back, and he laughed.
"She's got my smile this one, which means you all better watch out, because Lionheart says that smile makes it impossible not to like me, and I'm sure Strongkit has inherited her mother's sharp intellect and she'll figure out how to use it for all kinds of mischief, which is what being an apprentice is for, isn't it? Without any further ado... Strongkit, from this day forward until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Strongpaw, to symbolize the path that StarClan will guide you on to warriorhood. I've known who your mentor would be since the first time I saw you. When you were born, you and your parents suffered the loss of your five siblings- Bronzekit, Reedkit, Paisleykit, Streamkit and Tinykit- and they named you Strongkit as you were strong enough to survive. Strength is not always about survival, though, and I knew instantly who you would need, and who would teach you perfectly what your name encompasses. Your mentor will be Dusklight- Lionheart trained him as an apprentice, and led him to be one of this clan's most brilliant and talented warriors. I know he will not only teach you all of his skills to his own exceptional level, but he will teach you kindness, compassion, and when to make the perfect joke. I hope in time you will see the lessons I intended for you to learn from him, but only time will tell."
Strongpaw blinked in surprise as the clan called out her new name, and Midnightstream nudged her to her paws as she stumbled across, coming to a stop in front of the tall warrior. He smiled down at her with a twinkle in his eye, dipping his head to touch his nose to her own with a rumbling purr. She sat down at his paws, looking up to the branch for guidance, but her grandfather was already gone, and Lionheart was stepping forward to organize patrols.
"I don't understand," she said quietly, and above her, Dusklight laughed; not malicious or ill-intentioned, but jovial and kind.
"Neither do I, to be completely honest," he cracked a grin at his new apprentice, "but hey, that's half the fun in figuring it out."
✦
The snow was coming down lightly now as Leafbare drew to a close, and Sedgefire couldn't find it within herself to complain. Despite her heavy coat, Leafbare snows were still unpleasant, and Wolverinejaw particularly did not like them. She was happy to have the day in, but sitting around in her nest was making her restless, so when the snowing stopped, she stepped out of the den and into the sunshine that had emerged from beyond the shower, stretching enough to make her sleek black pelt ripple in the sunlight.
"Hey, Sedgefire," her ears pricked and she turned, to find Archibald exiting the den after her, avoiding eye contact, "can I... talk to you for a minute? It's kind of private." Sedgefire wasn't particularly sure that she wanted to be involved in anything that required a private talk, but for the sake of Archibald being Novella's brother, she decided to chance it.
"Sure," she said, "wanna go for a walk around the exterior of the camp?" Archie hesitated for a moment, and then nodded, following after Sedgefire as she alerted Mousestone as to where they were going, and then headed out of camp. They didn't get very far around the walls before the black tom stopped, frowning pointedly at his paws, which he scuffed against the forest floor. Sedgefire sighed. "Okay, you should probably just tell me whatever it is because I'll get frustrated with the tortured psyche act real fast."
"This was stupid, I shouldn't- augh." Archie shook his head, turning to stomp back to camp, stopped only by Sedgefire calling out to him.
"Hey! Dark and broody! You dragged me all the way out here for something, and no matter how stupid you think it is, I guarantee you it's more stupid to waste my time." Sedgefire waited as Archie paused, and stiffened, before he sighed and turned back to her, padding across to sit down, staring thoughtfully at his paws for a few moments, before he spoke.
"Well... you know Rivuletflight and I are mates."
"Yes."
"And we want to have kits."
"...Yes?"
"Well, we didn't know who we could ask as a surrogate because I don't... I don't know anyone that well, and neither does he, and I don't want to ask a stranger or my sister, but I was talking about it with Novella, and she suggested that we... ask you. To be our surrogate." Sedgefire blinked at him and Archie groaned, closing his eyes. "StarClan help me, this is going terribly. Uh, she suggested because she said that you and Wolverinejaw were also thinking about surrogating kits so then Rivuletflight suggested that maybe if you and Wolverinejaw both surrogated, then we could have one litter for us, and one litter for you... please say something because I kind of can't tell if you're going to skin me or not." Sedgefire laughed.
"Why would I skin you? You're preventing me with a solution to a problem I hadn't even really thought about yet, and it's a good plan. You know I would do anything for your sister, and I know I seem cranky but I do actually like to help my clanmates. Look, I can't speak for Wolverinejaw because I'm not her, contrary to popular opinion... but I honestly would be okay with that, so why don't we go back to camp, and talk to her, and then you'll have your answer?" Archibald smiled, his expression tinged with palpable relief.
"Okay. I'd like that."
✦
"Can I talk to you?" Emberwing looked up to see Midnightstream standing near her, the wind buffeting his black fur as the storm clouds settled over the horizon. They were far off in the distance, but the clan hurried about anxiously, preparing for the last storm of the season, when none of them particularly wanted to be caught off guard, especially not Goldleaf, who inspected every cat back from patrol suspiciously for any signs of a cough.
"If it's okay with the medicine cats, then sure." She smiled a little, and Midnightstream gave her a tight smile back. His conversation with Goldleaf was short and the golden molly didn't look particularly happy about it, but Midnightstream returned with the go ahead, and so the pair of them set off. The knowledge of what was coming hung between them silently, and neither acknowledged it, not until they were in a clearing where they could speak uninterrupted.
"I've been thinking," Midnightstream said, with a deep breath, "I guess that's my problem is that I think too much and I feel too little... but I've been grieving for a long time, and in my grief I didn't support you when you needed me most. I was being selfish, and I should have done more to focus on just being there for you instead of trying to rationalize everything. I think sometimes I think things will get better if I can think about why they happen, to understand them logically, but I know that's me and it's not you, and I understand that I hurt you by prioritizing that over your actual feelings and comfort."
"I was in the wrong too. I invalidated your hurt over what happened to Twilightkit- and maybe I didn't know the exact details but that doesn't excuse it, because I know as an objective fact that everyone's sadness is valid and we deal with things in different ways, and I shouldn't have just expected you to be okay, because you lost them too, and I think I forgot that somewhere along the way." Midnightstream blinked, before he smiled a little.
"Well... I don't think you had anything to apologize for really because you were upset and it put things into perspective for me, so from now on I'm going to try and be the best mate I can-"
"I don't think we should stay together," Emberwing said, as gently as she could. Midnightstream froze. "I've been talking to cats that I can trust, cats whose opinions I value as much as I value yours... and the thing is, I've had some perspective too. I still think you're an incredible cat, Midnightstream. From what you've endured to how you're still standing after all of it, you're probably one of the strongest cats I know, and I don't regret any of the time I've had with you... but the truth of the matter is that I built you up in my head as an idol, and then I tried to make you be someone you're not, and that's not fair to you. I can't ask you to change to be what I wanted, and I don't want to make you unhappy by forcing you to stay with me and conform to what I expect of you, because that's not fair to you, and it's not fair to me either to try and make things work where I think they won't."
"I..." Midnightstream paused, and then nodded, "okay. I won't pretend it doesn't hurt a little, because I still care about you-"
"I know," she smiled, "and I care about you too. I still love you, even, but... I don't think you loved me. That's not an accusation by any means, because I know you love me as a friend... but I also know there's someone else who has your heart." Midnightstream turned his head away, shaking it slightly.
"It's... not like that. And even if it was, it's too late now."
"It's not. It's never too late to get it right- what do you think we're doing, after all? I'll never stop caring for you. You were still my first and best friend, and I hope one day you can be again, and I know you're going to be an excellent father to Strongpaw, but... I think we have to set each other free now and admit that we got it a little bit wrong, and do our bests to set it right." Midnightstream smiled a bit, shaking his head as tears welled in his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"You don't have to be. You tried to give me everything when I didn't even realize how much I was asking. You weren't right for me, and I didn't see that soon enough, but you gave me your best effort because you give so much and you never take for yourself. It's time for you to take a little, Midnightstream. StarClan above knows you deserve it after everything." She stepped forward, pressing her nose to his forehead as he let out a tired chuckle.
"Thank you," he said, "we'll be friends again, one day, I know we will. I care about you too much to stop."
"Good," Emberwing said with a laugh, "I'd like that. But first, we need to heal."
