”No, no, please! Don’t take her from me!”
“Filthy little foxheart, she’s ours! Back off!”
“Surely we can talk this out-“
“No! You’ve betrayed your clan for the last time, Sweetnose, and now you must suffer the consequences! Guards, attack!”
“Please no, please-!”
Sweetnose jolted from her sleep, the thick smell of rainwater in the air. It was raining, and she was in an unfamiliar den. The ground was dry, however, as the thick branches of a tree protected her from the bitter cold. She remembered what had happened last moon. She thought back to when she used to be in Briar’s clan, where his rule was as sharp as his claws. Sweetnose shivered when she thought about going back there. But how else was she to get her beloved Sugarpaw back?
Conquest came into the den quietly, eying Sweetnose. “So, how was your bed? Was it comfy enough?” His purr was sweet, but Sweetnose knew it wasn’t as sweet as Sugarpaw’s.
“It was fine, I suppose… I did have a nightmare though…” The last part of her sentence trailed off quietly, worried that her new leader would be as unnerved as her last one.
Conquest said nothing but sat down by Sweetnose, wrapping his tail over by her flank. “What was it about?” He asked calmly.
The smell of that dreadful night still remained wet and wrinkled within her mind. Sweetnose didn’t want to remember, but she wanted to trust Conquest. “It was about Sugarpaw…” She mewed quietly.
Conquest nodded, remembering when Sweetnose had told him about a cat named Sugarpaw when he first met Sweetnose. He thought about how much this cat meant to her; perhaps this Sugarpaw was her daughter or squire?
“By any chance can you tell me more about this Sugarpaw?” Conquest asked Sweetnose.
Sweetnose remained silent.
With a short sigh, Conquest stood up and calmly mewed “I’m sorry about your loss, even if you don’t want to talk about it. But if it makes you feel better, I’ll send out a rescue patrol to find Sugarpaw.” And like that he left, out into the cold rain.
The wet smell seemed to leave Sweetnose’s nose after that talk.
