““Let all the cats old enough to hunt gather beneath the high rock.” Morningstar’s loud call summoned the entire clan beneath the rock pile he used to make ceremonies. His eyes softened as Dappleleaf and her young kits joined. The clan’s curious eyes flashed towards the nursery as Lilystem and Larkfeather sat proudly behind their kits. The two queens had arranged their kits to sit in front of them and had spent an enormous amount of time trying to groom the kits so they were presentable. Even so, Splashkit and Wildkit’s pelts were covered in dust after they’d gotten away with wrestling while their mothers groomed their siblings. Lilystem shook her head slightly, wishing she could do more to keep her daughter clean but before she could try to give either kit a quick bath, Morningstar began speaking. “For a few moons now, the apprentices' den has been rather empty but not for much longer. I’m excited to perform one of the clan’s most important ceremonies and welcome seven new apprentices. I’m also pleased to welcome Caveclan’s newest members. Echokit and Moonkit may be a little young still but it’s good that they will watch and begin getting familiar with some of Caveclan’s traditions.” Morningstar blinked warmly at the little family just outside the nursery. Dappleleaf’s pair of kits looked like owls, their eyes large and unblinking as they watched the rest of the clan from their mother’s side. Turning his hazel eyes to the older kits, he paused a moment, mentally reciting their future mentors. He’d assigned several young warriors as their mentors, which wasn’t always the best idea due to their inexperience, but the leader wasn’t worried. Silvernose and Harespring had been mentors before and would help guide the younger mentors. Silvernose hadn’t had an apprentice since Juniperfoot had become a warrior and Harespring’s last apprentice had been Thymepool, who had just finished mentoring her own apprentice, Mintwhisker. This would be Ferretclaw’s first apprentice as well, but the tabby tom was an experienced warrior and father, so Morningstar believed he’d make a fine mentor. All in all, the mentors were a good balance of experienced warriors and young warriors. The ceremonies went smoothly and the entire clan raised their voices to congratulate the new apprentices. The kits’ parents’ were among the first to congratulate the new apprentices, the rest of the clan not far behind in cheering on the group. Morningstar dismissed the clan with a flick of his tail and watched the clan congratulating the new apprentices. The ginger tabby swore he could hear Lilystem and Larkfeather’s proud purrs over the loud, excited voices of the new apprentices. His whiskers twitched with amusement as Alderkit and Laurelkit seemed to swarm over Chiveclaw in their overwhelming excitement. Once their training began, the apprentices would certainly turn out to be a terrifying force. Morningstar would not envy the enemies that may face the group in the future. That future was not too far in sight, Morningstar thought, watching as the mentors began rounding up their apprentices to begin their training. Before that, they’d have to get through their first training session.
The calico queen purred proudly, lowering her head to lick the top of their heads fondly after Morningstar’s welcome. Her kits had been born the day after Mintwhisker’s warrior ceremony. With their birth, came curious glances and questions as the clan wanted to know more about the mysterious father. Dappleleaf even noticed a few cats glancing between her and Chiveclaw, remembering how close the pair had been before Chiveclaw and Lilystem announced themselves as being mates. Dappleleaf had resolved to not say anything about the kits father, neither confirming or denying who fathered her kits. Oddly enough, neither Chiveclaw or Lilystem were saying anything either. Instead, Lilystem shot her a knowing glance once in a while, but Chiveclaw was being careful not to catch Dappleleaf’s eye. The occasional accidental eye-contact between the pair resulted in both the pair looking away, fur prickling with discomfort. Dappleleaf hadn’t thought the tabby tom still carried any feelings towards her but if he didn’t, why would he react like this? She wasn’t sure but atleast her closeness with Cloudpool wasn’t being looked at with a suspicious light. The clan couldn’t or perhaps wouldn’t imagine that their medicine cat would’ve fathered kits. In a rare moment of alone time with her mate, she’d managed to talk to him about the problem. Lilystem and Larkfeather had brought the kits out of the den while Cloudpool helped Dappleleaf through the birth, Sedgetail had chosen to spend her time with Burrwhisker in the medicine den, while Juniperfoot and Owlheart had gone to fetch fresh kill and water soaked moss for the new mother, leaving the pair alone. As hard as it was, the pair had decided to distance themselves for a while, at least while the clan was still curious. The clan couldn’t find out about Cloudpool being their father. If they found out, it wouldn’t just be the mates at risk, but their kits as well. Dappleleaf worried that her clanmates would treat the kits differently if they knew. Once the buzz of excitement over her kits died down a little, perhaps she and Cloudpool would be able to relax a little but it was too soon. Hopefully, the arrival of Sedgetail’s kits and Juniperfoot’s kits would be a good distraction from her own family.
“Finally!” Pepperpaw skipped eagerly around her mentor, Mistfall, hazel eyes gleaming with excitement. “I thought we’d never become apprentices!” Alderpaw agreed from where he stood next to Ferretclaw. “Can we go out and train now?” Splashpaw gazed up at Tigerjaws, her green eyes stretching wide with hope. “I don’t see why not.” Silvernose, Robinkit’s mentor, said, stretching out each leg and her back before exchanging a glance with Harespring. “We’ll take you to the twisted tree.” The silver tabby said, with a nod of agreement from Harespring and the other mentors. “All of us?” Wildkit’s hazel gaze was filled with a mixture of nerves and excitement. “All of us,” Ashstrike confirmed with a nod. “Not all of our training sessions may be held together but many of them will be.” Emberslash, Toadpaw’s mentor, told them. Of the younger mentors, he had the most experience from helping Thymepool and Sunstripe occasionally with Mintwhisker and Spottedpaw. “If you are all ready, we can go.” Harespring purred at the chorus of enthusiastic mews from the apprentices. “Let’s go then!” Mistfall purred. “Splashpaw, Laurelpaw, wait for us!” Tigerjaws called out, as he and Harespring sped up slightly to keep pace with the enthusiastic young apprentices.
The medicine den felt empty without his former mentor but time and the clan kept Cloudpool busy enough that his grief was beginning to ease somewhat. Emberslash had visited his den for an infection but it had been minor so Cloudpool had given him herbs and allowed him to return to his den. Burrwhisker, however, was a different story. Cloudpool had deemed the tom’s wounds too serious and had Burrwhisker stay in the medicine den while he healed. Sedgetail spent most of her time staying with the tom so their presence was nice but it wasn’t the same as having a fellow medicine cat working with him. Cloudpool needed an apprentice, not just to keep him company but to be the clan’s future healer. Splashpaw had never shown any preference towards either becoming a warrior or medicine cat so Cloudpool hadn’t asked her to become his apprentice but instead decided to keep an eye on her and the other apprentices. If he saw signs she may make a better medicine cat than a warrior, he’d talk to her but for now, Cloudpool would look towards the nursery for an apprentice. His own kits could follow in his pawsteps or one of the unborn kits might show interest in the medicine den. Hopefully, it would not be long before a medicine apprentice was found. If Starclan’s prophecy was true, Cloudpool wanted to be sure the clan would have a new medicine cat in case something happened to him. This worry had been on his mind before Shadedleaf’s death but had grown stronger ever since Shadedleaf had delivered her prophecy. The medicine cat had told no one about the prophecy, not even Morningstar. Some of the cats on the last border patrol had questioned his decision to bring back a single pebble and with the leader’s advancing age, Cloudpool did not want to worry him. He didn’t think the events of the last patrol were something to worry about but he did know that if Morningstar had been a normal warrior instead of clan leader, he’d be preparing to move into the elder’s den in the next few moons. It was best to keep the Caveclan leader in the dark for now, at least until something actually happened. The clan seemed safe for now and Cloudpool wouldn’t worry Morningstar until he had too.
