Post:
A young sun glow vixen picked her way through the forest, grumbling to herself about how she was better off without them, she didn't need them anyway and they just didn't want to accept the truth. She paused at the edge of the forest, staring out into the lake nearby. "This preyland will make good homeland," she murmured, smiling and showing her canines. "They say I'm disobediant, ha! There is none to disobey here. It is all for me. Mine!" The vixen snapped at a butterfly that had strayed too close to her muzzle. It was powdery and tasteless, and the vixen wanted to spit it out as soon as it touched her tongue. "Maybe some forage-hunting," she swiped her tongu across her lips to try and rid herself of the butterfly residue.
She took off into the woods, bounding over logs and sticks, reveling in her newfound freedom. The vixen spent so long. pressed beneath the rules of her father's skulk, but now she was able to do whatever she wanted. She could do everything for herself-- anything she wanted to do! She didn't have to ask for permission or bring another fox along. The vixen paused to chuckle to herself. "Those fangthroats don't know what they're missing." Then she took off again, inhaling the clear air and dashing through the territory she would claim for herself.
So wrapped up in her selfish thoughts, the vixen did not see the ditch ahead of her until it was too late. She fell headfirst, hearing a crack as her hind legs smashed into the walls of the hole. Her skull collided with the hard dirt, and everything went dark.
The vixen didn't know how long she lay there, the small creek running past her muzzle and wetting her whiskers. She could hear it, and feel the cold water against her nose. It was annoying. Opening her eyes, the vixen was shocked to see that she was no longer in her beautiful forest. Bolting upright, she stared around, not recognizing a thing. A transparent, glittering, fox-like form, descended in front of her, dipping its head in greeting. "Vainiklapis," it said, its voice coming from everywhere and nowhere.
The vixen, Vainiklapis, trembled in fear. She didn't know where she was. She wanted her forest back, her lake, her marsh. She did not like this strange land with starry foxes and disembodied voices. "Who are you and where am I? Take me back to my homeland at once!" Vainiklapis demanded, stamping her paw.
The voice laughed. The starty fox didn't move its mouth when it spoke. "I am afraid you can't go back, foolish vixen. This is the place of stars. You have passed on from the living realm and are joining us here."
Vainiklapis shook her head, stepping back. "No, I can't be dead. I just found my perfect forest, where I plan to live forever. Send me back right now!" Her voice was almost a growl.
The starty fox's face contorted, as if it was narrowing its eyes. "Your mother named you aptly. They weren't exaggerating you're blind vanity."
Vainiklapis crouched, her gaze turning cold. "I am not vain!"
The starry fox cackled, obviously not believing the puny mortal in front of him. Hethought for a moment. "Prove it." Vainiklapis looked puzzled, but the starry fox continued. "There is a skulk that is in dire need o-"
"I'm not joining another skulk. I'll make my own. You'll see, you'll see! It'll be the strongest, most loyal and more beautiful skulk in all the land."
Amusement filled the starry fox's voice. "Perhaps. Good luck, then, Vainiklapis."
The vixen opened her eyes, seeing the dirt walls in front of her. She jumped up, shocked to see that her hind legs-- which she was sure she had broken in the fall-- were whole once again. She circled once, making sure that she was fully healed of any injuries from the fall. Vainiklapis' eyes widened in amazement. She was flawless once again! Not even the scar on her wrist from when her older brothers had played too roughly remained. Pride surged in her chest. Her endeavor was supported by the stars-- surely it could not fail. The vixen raced off again (although this time watching for ditches), excitement filling her bones as she looked for foxes to join her skulk
