keeping her eyes and ears peeled - for either rogues
or cats of the empire - as she reached the endless
fence that marked the border of empire territory.
Taking a last look around, the black molly darted
towards the fence, took a flying leap, and scurried
up the fence as fast as her long fur allowed. At the
top, the molly jumped off of the hard mesh and hit
not-so-gracefully on the ground. She darted into the
nearest bush, glancing back at Empire territory for
her last reassurance that no one had been following
her. No eyes, blue, green or amber met her's and
the molly relaxed, emerging from the bush before
heading in the direction of the rogue scent she had
smelled the moon or so before. Nettlesting wished
to recruit the rogues she found into joining her
rebellion in overthrowing the Empire, into re-
making it into an honorable and just clan, like...
the bordering NobleClan, or HurricaneClan. But if
the rogues accepted Nettlesting's deal - involving
battle, bloodshed, and power, things that rogues
were notorious for loving - remained to be seen.
The molly just hope they accepted, because
rogues would give her rebellion enough cat-power
to overthrow Noble and his followers...which was
most of the Empire. Nettlesting sighed, trying to
her next move to either gain more power or 'help'
the Empire lose some when she heard them. A
female voice, low but not quiet enough, giving ord-
ers to other cats. Nettlesting's fur fluffed up as she
realized the rogues planned to attack her, and she
spun around as three shapes - two silver bengals
and a black cat - hit her. Nettlesting hissed, raking
her claws down the chest of one bengal and kicking
the black cat, who was fairly small, away, before
the last cat hit her. This cat was the largest and
pinned Nettlesting easily. Nettlesting relaxed under
the rogue, trying to remember that she was here to
make a deal, not to fight. The bengal on top of her,
who was seemingly a molly, hissed at Nettlesting's
relax, putting more of her weight into pinning the
other down. "Who are you!?" Growled the rogue,
"And what are you doing near our territory?" I could
ask you the same thing. Nettlesting thought silently
remembering how close the Empire border was. But
anger this molly more, or Nettlesting would receive
a chestful of claws. "I am Nettlesting," She mewed
calmly, trying to appear as weak as catly possible,

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
"And I am a soldier of the Empire of the Gods. A very bad place if I say so myself." The rogue molly tilted her head back and
laughed cruelly.
"So times got hard, and you up and left food and shelter?" Nettlesting took a breath to calm her irritation.
All she wanted was cat-power, not to argue with some super-strong molly about the Empire. And if she didn't want to lose her
temper, Nettlesting was going to have to get to her point.
"No," she started,
"I still live with them. And I like the basic ideas -
living with an organized group, gaining food, shelter, and protection, having healers to treat you when your sick, and I guess
therefore lengthening your life span. But the rest of it...is not very good. Not bad enough to cause me to leave, but bad
enough to get me to want to change it." The rogue molly wrinkled her nose while processing this - so not the fastest thinker
in the meadow, but as she opened her mouth to respond to Nettlesting's mini-monologue, the other bengal, a thin tom, said
"Artemis, ignore this mangy clan cat and get on with killing her! All she's gonna do is try to seduce one of out toms - " He was
cut off by a withering stare from the molly - Artemis. Wait - wasn't that the name of a god?
"I expected better of you, brother."Artemis snapped.
"But - " Artemis cut him off again.
"Goose! One more word...!" Goose snapped his mouth shut, eyes shining
with annoyance directed in Artemis's direction. From the little things such as this, Nettlesting gathered that Artemis was the
leader of this little group of rogues - but of the big group scented, who knew. Artemis could have higher ups. As if drawn by
Nettlesting's thoughts, Artemis snapped her head back around to gaze at the black-furred molly beneath her paws.
"You. You
come from this Empire you say? Is it like a clan?" Nettlesting nodded. Artemis' weight shifted in surprise and Nettlesting took
the opportunity to throw the larger molly off. Her unsheathed claws dug into the ground, daring the slightly surprised bengal
to make a move. Artemis was silent for a moment, and the black cat - a tom - shifted on his paws, his green eyes glittering
with anxiety.
"Nice move." Artemis said finally.
"But you are a clan cat." She took a step closer to Nettlesting.
"Why in the
name of the gods would you come here? To our territory?" Nettlesting calmed the worried and vicious emotions swirling in her
mind as she met Artemis' gaze.
"I came here to offer you something. I need help - brute help - overthrowing the leader. And
my little rebellion I have in the Empire - or clan if you will, is three cats large, and the other two are currently...indisposed.
Not even enough to get past Noble's defenses. Noble is our leader. He has followers. But with your help - you and the rest of
your rouges - I think we would have enough cats to overpower Noble, kill him, and bring a new leader into power - somecat
smarter, kinder, more leader-like." Artemis' eyes, which were shining brighter with every word Nettlesting said, suddenly lost
their lust at the last four syllables.
"More leader-like? I'm assuming that would be you, of course." Nettlesting's eyes widened.
The long-furred molly would never have actually considered that choice.
"StarClan, no! I was thinking...well I don't know. But
you could definitely play a role as a deputy or something - the second-in-command and future leader. Just so you can learn
the customs and ways of a clan not the...wild life of a rogue. And, I mean, you obviously have leader-like qualities." The dark
molly took a breath.
"You know how hard it has been to not claw your eyes out, right? I could teach you and your friends more
self-control too." Goose snorted at the first sentence.
"You could try - and fail." This time Artemis didn't quiet him. Nettlesting
scowled at the tom before turning back to Artemis.
"Here's the deal - you help me overthrow Noble and his goons, and you get
all the battle you want as well as food, shelter, and a place in the new clan that will rise. And don't forget your power..." The
molly let her sentence trail off. Artemis' eyes were gleaming, but she didn't accept.
"Follow." She moved towards the twoleg
den in the distance and when neither Nettlesting, Goose, or the black tom followed she turned around her eyes locking with
Goose.
"Go warn the others that we have a guest coming." Goose, to Nettlesting's surprise, didn't argue. The bengal ran off,
fast as wind. Artemis then turned to Nettlesting.
"I said follow." "Why?" "Because I want you to discuss this with some of my
more trusted cats. And to, you know, make sure this isn't a trick." Nettlesting shrugged at the rogue's words.
"Make it quick. I
have...a brother to attend to." A pang went through the molly. Even after all Flareblood did for her, she still felt sorry about
what she was going to do. She couldn't even kill him by her own claw. As Artemis turned away, the black tom close on her tail,
Nettlesting took a deep breath to calm herself. It wasn't long before the trio reached the rogue's camp - an old, rotting, barn.
A fluffy red molly sped over to Artemis from her position outside the entrance - apparently she was the guard.
"Artemis, thank
goodness. I heard you were bringing a friend, but - " She was cut off by Artemis' shut-up-now-or-I-swear-I'll-break-your-bones
stare. Or at least, that's the stare Nettlesting thought the bengal was giving the red molly.
"Spark," Artemis ordered,
"Go fetch
Rose, Goose, Skyward for me, and send Toucan out to guard." Spark blinked, memorizing the order before bounding into the
barn. Artemis, Nettlesting, and the tom followed. Nettlesting, understanding that the rogues had some sort of hierarchy now,
as was obvious from Artemis' playing leader, speaking of trusted cats, and ordering Spark around, expected to find an orderly
barn. Instead she encountered Spark trying to break up a fight between a black and white tom and a huge white molly, two
young toms wrestling for what was left of a rabbit, and a small kit whining for its mother, while two other kits sat snickering,
obviously having done something to the little kit. Nettlesting felt a shock run through her, but she was interrupted from her
feelings when Spark, who had split up the argument, came back with the huge white molly, Goose, and a gray tabby.
"I've
gathered them." The fluffy molly said rather unnecessarily. Artemis flicked her tail towards a steep, two-trunked tree with
branches running between each trunk. It led to a higher level of the barn.
"Up the ladder then." Nettlesting watched Spark,
he black tom, and the black tabby climb the weird tree - no ladder - then followed, feeling like she would fall backwards at
any moment. But the black molly made it to the next level fine. After the last cat - the white molly - finished her journey up
the ladder, Artemis locked gazes with Nettlesting.
"Alright, my friend. Tell them your plan." Nettlesting decided Artemis calling
her friend was a slip up of words. Nettlesting explained her plan to the small group of rogues. The black tom stood.
"Isn't it a
little.....violent?" He questioned. The black tabby shoved the tom down.
"Be a tom, Arum! Violence is the only way to solve
this problem! And power!" Nettlesting saw immediately why Artemis liked this tom.
"But Skyward - " Arum started only to be
cut off by Spark shifting to her paws.
"For once I agree with Arum; this is to violent. Besides, why should we participate - all
that will happen is dozens of deaths for us, and power for Artemis. If she really cared about us, she would spend more time
thinking and less time jumping into situations that benefit her." Silence. Suddenly Artemis was on top of the ginger. "
After all
this time, do you dare to question my orders?" Spark thrashed under the huge molly's paws, but she still looked determined.
"Artemis - it's my plan. Let me handle her." Nettlesting mewed, surprising herself. What surprised her even more is that the
bengal molly moved aside for Nettlesting. The long-furred black molly took the rogue leader's place over Spark.
"So my plan is
too violent, huh? You want the power? You look strong, granted, but power by looks won't do it. Now agree to comply to my
plan or you get it if the rest of the...conference agrees to it." Nettlesting felt the familiar thrill of risk as she said this and she
turned to look at Artemis, Skyward, Arum, Goose, and the white molly. The last four nodded, giving their assent and the molly
looked towards Artemis. She didn't think the rogue would let her kill one of her own warriors, but Artemis just shot Spark a
disdainful look.
"I'll agree to your plan. And feel free to kill my worthless cat - she means nothing after this outright show of
dis-loyalty." Surprise shocked through Nettlesting's fur, but she shrugged turning back to Spark. If the fiery molly knew of the
plans and didn't like them, she could tell the Empire and worse, Noble. As Nettlesting lifted her paw to deal the killing blow,
the strange white molly barreled into her, knocking her off of the squirming spark.
"Leave her alone." The molly snarled.
"She
can leave her with her life. I'm sure you would agree?" She turned to Artemis, who was starting to descend the ladder. The
bengal stopped, let out an over-dramatic sigh,
"I suppose, but she may not remain her and I hope she dies a horrible death and
if you kill her Nettlesting I won't stop you." And left. Nettlesting blinked. Well that was one fast moment. As the white molly
moved back, Nettlesting did as well, allowing Spark to her paws. Nettlesting was antsy about the molly telling the Empire of
her plans, but she didn't dare attack Spark, because, well, who knew what that white molly would do? Spark stood up, shaking
out her fur.
"Fine." She said to no one in particular.
"If you don't want me here for stating my opinion, I'll go to the other side.
The Empire." Nettlesting felt her fur stand on end.
"What!?" Spark glared at her.
"I won't tell them of your plans. I want this
battle as much as you do, now. I want revenge." The word tasted sweet on Spark's tongue. So quickly had her attitude towards
this ragtag rogue group changed.
"And you can't stop me. Or Rose will...I actually don't know but it won't be good." Spark said,
flicking her tail at the white molly. Nettlesting felt rage exploding over her fur, but she could tell Spark's words about being a
good kitten and not telling anybody of the rebellion or rogues were true.
"Fine." Nettlesting snapped.
"But I'll have to talk to
you on the way back to my camp." Nettlesting and Spark then dissapeared down the ladder, leaving a very confused Skyward
and Arum and a very angry Rose and Goose behind.
---
Spark slunk next to Nettlesting, the two mollies both having shut their mouths tight. Nettlesting's words kept replaying through
Spark's heads -
tell them you are a traveling loner, encountered an empty rouge camp, found your way here, would like to join
the Empire. Nettlesting had also tried to get rid of Spark, but the ginger molly threatened to tell the Empire of the other's
plans and when Nettlesting threatened to kill Spark, the molly offered to tell them through her spirit. Nettlesting had stopped,
but Spark could still see the venom in her gaze. It wasn't long before Spark and Nettlesting reached what was probably the
Empire's camp. It was a huge stone pyramid, smack in the middle of a field. Spark shrugged. Twolegs did strange things all the
time, assuming they put this pyramid here. Nettlesting was about to lead Spark through an entrance when a male voice called,
"Halt!" Spark whipped around to see a black tom followed by a grey molly with startling orange eyes and a small kit following
him, as well as a tortoiseshell molly and a mostly white molly. The tortoiseshell seemed lost in thought, but the black tom and
white molly had their lips peeled back to reveal dangerous fangs. They relaxed, though only slightly, when they saw that it
was only Nettlesting.
"Who is this you bring?" called the black tom as he trotted closer. Spark dipped her head with mock
respect. Even though she didn't respect him, she had to give the tom credit. He was huge and strong, and clever from the
shimmering look in his eyes.
"My name is Spark. I am a loner from yonder." She jerked her head vaguely towards...the east? At
least the fluffy molly thought it was the east. The black tom's eyes narrowed.
"Well, newcomer, it seems you aren't the only
one lucky enough to stumble upon the Empire." He snapped his head up to gaze at the white molly.
"Barleyslash! Go warn the
others we have....friends." She nodded.
"On it." Mewed Barleyslash, bounding into the camp. The way things worked here - a
messenger, organized ranks, some sort of patrols - it reminded Spark of the rogues and she felt a shiver of anger run through
her body, but she suppressed it, meeting the black tom's eyes and trying to put as much innocence into her look as possible.
Then, with a flick of his tail, the black tom led the small group of six cats into the tunnel leading to his camp. It was small,
but that barely bothered Spark. The scent of many cats flooded into her nostrils, and she emerged into an open space, sun-
light flooding into the camp from some sort of skylight above. Any cats in the camp who had been notified by Barleyslash
stood erect, some with their ears pinned back in a hostile manner, and some curious, and those who had not been notified or
who didn't care or mind just sat there, grooming each other. A gray tom stood from where he was eating next to a molly and
took a tentative step forwards.
"Noble...?" The black tom gave him a curt nod, and the gray tom relaxed and sat back down,
whispering something to the molly who relaxed as well. The black tom - Noble - leaped onto a ledge overhanging part of the
camp.
"May all cats old enough to fight gather beneath this ledge for a Empire meeting!" He yowled. With a little grumbling,
the cats who were laying across the clearing heaved themselves to their paws and trotted over to the soft area beneath the
ledge. Noble stepped forwards, puffed his chest out in an effort to look important, and said,
"Today, the Gods have granted
us with two new members to help our Empire grow...and possibly another." At this, Noble's gaze locked on Spark's, and the
molly couldn't help but shiver. But he turned away to the gray molly and the kit.
"Cider, Smithy step forwards." They did.
"I,
King Noble, leader of the Empire of the gods have encountered these two cats. They will try hard to learn of your noble deeds,
and I will make sure of it. Now, Cider step forwards." The molly complied.
"Cider, are you ready to commit your blood and
soul to the Empire, to help us grow big and strong?" Cider gulped.
"I do." "Then by the power of the Gods, I give you your new
name, the name of a soldier. From this moment on you will be known as Ciderwhisker. Now - " "Wait." Cider's voice was strong,
even if it was a bit shaky.
"Me and my son would like to keep our names, please." The kit nodded to emphasize her point. The
black tom glowered at mother and son for a moment before shrugging.
"Your choice. You shall forever be known as Cider. Now
Smithy step forwards." The small black tabby bounced forwards, his eyes shining eagerly. Noble then repeated the ceremony
for the young kit, then turned to Spark.
"Young molly, what is your name?" Spark blinked.
"Uh, Spark, sir." Noble nodded.
"You
look strong - useful - unlike some cats." He said. A few cats in the clearing shifted at his words, most notably a white molly
casting a despairing look at a white tom. Spark turned her attention back to Noble as he spoke.
"I shall go to the moontree to
speak to the Gods tonight - to ask if Spark is worthy of our Empire." Murmurs spread throughout the Empire, but were quickly
silenced when Noble flicked his tail.
"I already know Cider and Smithy's backstory. Now, young one, tell me yours." Spark
gulped but spilled out the fake story she and Nettlesting had invented.
"I was a loner. I lived with my mother for a few moons,
then went out on my own. Nothing really interesting until yesterday. Found a camp or somethin' with faint cat scents. Maybe
another Empire like this one? Anyways, the cats were long gone. Then I happened upon Nettlesting who told me about the
Empire and I was intrigued. And here I am." Relief flitted over Noble's features for a moment, then it left.
"The rogues have
left." He announced.
"They are the group Spark speaks of." He turned back to the ginger molly.
"You may stay here until the
Gods decide what to do you with. But you are forbidden to eat - I don't want a drag on our resources if the Gods don't accept
you." Spark's stomach protested, but she dipped her head, trying to look diplomatic.
"Meeting dismissed." As Noble leaped of
off the ledge, Spark surveyed her surroundings. As the cats settled back to normal, she noticed Nettlesting padding over to
talk to a ginger tom who was obviously trying to ignore her approach. Queens watched their kits play in the central clearing
under the sunlight, except for a white molly, who was pacing and muttering to herself. The gray tom she had seen earlier was
back beside the same molly. Smithy was chasing the tail of a young black tom, and Cider was watching. Even though she looked
unhappy about, well Noble, joy countered this emotion as she watched her kit. Spark couldn't help but feel the same. As long
as she avoided Noble and his cronies, as Nettlesting called them, and didn't speak of the rogues plan, she would be fine. But
Spark knew for sure she would and could do the last thing - it was her chance for sweet revenge. Against Artemis for kicking
her out of her home, and against Artemis specifically for taking Arum away from Spark.
---
Aspkit's tail whisked through the grass, her eyes concentrated on the small kit in front of her. Okay, small wasn't right - the
new kit, Smithy was pretty big for his age. But so was Aspkit. And every kit looked small to her. The little molly pounced, and
Smithy whirled around in shock.
"Great stars, you scared me!" He laughed, blinking at Aspkit. The molly puffed out her chest.
"I know! Aren't I the scariest cat around?" Coming out of nowhere, Aspkit's brother, Sneezekit, tackled her.
"Maybe," he said,
puffing out his chest,
"But I am the bravest cat around!" Smithy wrinkled his nose at Sneezekit. It had only been a few days
since he had joined the clan, but Aspkit thought he was fitting in just fine.
"I think," the former rogue mewed,
"That you are
lying. Obviously I am the bravest, sneakiest, and most scary!" Aspkit let out a mock gasp.
"How dare you! I am the most scary!"She tackled the black tabby kit who grunted under her wait, but Sneezekit rammed into Aspkit's side, sending the young cat
tumbling off of Smithy.
"Nuh uh!" Her brother crowed.
"I am!" Aspkit stood and tackled her brother again, and soon Aspkit,
Sneezekit, Smithy, Liftkit, and Stingkit were all rolling around laughing. When Liftkit and Stingkit joined, Aspkit had no idea.
But as the five cats sprawled into a panting heap, it didn't matter.
"Weakling." Grunted Sneezekit, giving his sister a half-
hearted cuff over the ear. She grinned.
"Weakling your self." Sneezekit just grunted in response, rolling over and off the pile
of kits. Aspkit stood up, sending Stingkit rolling off of her. The younger kit let out a squeak of surprise that quickly turned in
to laughter. Aspkit shook herself before prancing over to the fresh-kill pile and taking a hare.
---
Noble sat with his eyes half-narrowed on leader's ledge, watching the Empire go about their business. Nettlesting was begging
Flareblood for something, as she had been for the past quarter moon, ever since she had gotten back with Spark. Noble still
had not gone to the Gods to ask about Spark's worthiness, and he supposed he should do that soon enough. But he was torn
from his thoughts by a white-and-ginger distraction. Barleyslash landed neatly on leader's ledge besides the large black tom,
her eyes unusually nervous. Noble flicked an ear to show her he had seen her, but that didn't stop the excitement welling up
inside of him. The last time being this close to a molly had made him feel this way, it had been with his lovely Icenose, and
she was gone, now. Gone forever. Pushing the thoughts of the black and white molly and Barleyslash out of his head, Noble
watched Sneezekit head over to the entrance to the Shaman's den to talk to Cadetpool. The young tom seemed genuinely
interested in herbs, and while Noble scoffed on the useless art of healing, he had to admit it had come in handy. His lazy
thoughts were again interrupted as Barleyslash cleared her throat.
"Uh, My Lord, King Noble, sir...I came here to ask you a
question." A thrill coursed through Noble as he imagined what she would say - Would you be my mate? But despite her several
attempts at flirting with him when she first joined the clan, the molly had never really shown any sign of affection. No, she
probably came to ask Noble if she could punish some misbehaving cadet or rookie, or to ask if Nettlesting was a traitor. Noble
wondered about that question quite a lot. The young molly openly projected her dislike for Noble and the Empire, always
hung out with losers like Tawnyfall and Rogerfang, and didn't tell Noble about rogues she had scented near the territory.
Shaking this thought out, Noble opened his eyes fully, turned to face Barleyslash, and pushed his hopes down.
"What question
do you have?" The molly opened her mouth, seemed at loss for words, closed it, and tried again.
"Noble, will you...I've been
thinking...ugh, I can't do this." The molly stood up and paced on the ledge, in heavy danger of falling off. She whirled around
suddenly, panic in her gaze.
"Noble will you be my mate?" Noble's jaw dropped open, for the first time in his life. No, that was
a lie - when his brother had died simply by being thrown into a tree, Noble's jaw had dropped. But this was the first time
since then.
"I....I, yes!" He gasped in surprise. Relief replaced the panic in Barleyslash's gaze and she sat down, leaning into
the slightly larger tom.
"Thank the gods." They sat like that in silence for a moment, before the molly stood suddenly again.
"But what about Icenose!?" Apparently she had heard about Rookieslate, Rookieice, and Duopelt's mother. Noble looked at her,
contemplating this.
"She would have wanted me to move on. She told me so, two nights ago. I thought she might be hinting
that you would propose, but I didn't get my hopes up..." The usually cruel leader left it there and Barleyslash's body language
yowled relief.
"Oh Gods, thank the Gods." She murmured. This was Noble's one moment, one piece of vulnerability. Despite
his cruel manner, his iron grip on the Empire, and his messed up view of the world, his family was dear to him, the four
currently living cats and two of the dead. But no one knew this - and Noble would kill to keep it that way.

Snowstar paced one of the many clearings in StarClan, his eyes glittering with rage. "He just let it happen! He watched his
daughters fight one another, watched the stronger one wound the weak, and he didn't do anything about it!" His accent had
come back stronger than ever in his anger, and Stormheart watched his brother pace in agony to see him so upset. "It was fate,
Snowstar." Icenose mewed quietly from her place in a low hanging branch of an oak tree. Snowstar whirled around to face her.
"Fate, huh? Well we can mess with fate! Somehow screw Noble's life even worse than Nettlesting plans to!" Skypath blinked
from where he sat. "But isn't Nettlesting as crazy as Noble?" Snowstar swung to face him. "That's not her fault! She doesn't do
it consciously, it's her other personality!" Snarled the Siamese. "Brother - " Stormheart started, but Ashfall interrupted the
other Siamese tom. "At least neither of them are Branchfur." Silence. None of the cats knew why Branchfur had been sent to
the Dark Forest instead of StarClan, but it must have been bad. "They might as well be." Drizzlepath grouched. Snowstar
looked relieved someone agreed with him. "Exactly!" He said, exasperated. "Well, the way they are, that's fate. What happens
to them, that's fate." Chimed in Icenose again. Whitepelt snorted. "Like it was fate you fell in love with Noble?" The black and
white molly dipped her head. "Why of course. Fate is a path chosen for a cat by forces even we don't know of, and that cat
must walk their path. If you try to interfere with it, that is part of their fate. And what has happened cannot magically be
redone. We can only sit out Nettlesting's revolution and what is to come after." Icenose mewed. Her gaze suddenly turned icy.
"And while I don't support everything my mate does, he made a much better leader than you, Snowstar. At least he could keep
his clan from dying." And with that, the molly leaped out of her branch and vanished into the shadows.---
