THE SEASON is currently winter. as the cold settles upon the territories,the kennels must adapt to this change in
temperature. hopefully, the dogs were wise and prepared for this time to come...but, those who haven't prepare
d are up for a challenge of survival in an unforgiving terrain.
TO EXPECT less prey, moderate chance fatalities, more chances of sickness,, less dogs discovered on patrols,les
s herbs to be harvested, more difficult birthing, and more stillborns.

01. WAPITI CREEK

xxxx⟶ the kennel does not starve as they have been granted two more moons to gather resources.
• hazelrah's request has been answered; a faithful shaman arrives to join the ranks of wapiti creek.
• along captain blackberry's patrol, they come upon one of the borders and notice their markings are weak, fadin
g fast. this could be due to to the season's weather. the dogs will need to act upon this,sending a patrol specifica
lly for marking the borders. unmarked borders could lead to an increase in predators and rogues seeking to harm..
• captain bluebell & hazelrah manage to scrounge-up a nildro along their hunt, but nothing else to report.

the city has never been a safe place for anyone to be──and especially in one of a very popular state, new york. but there are other sections of this state which are, perhaps, overlooked, moreso than the famous "new york city" itself. and in this borough of the state i mention, namely rochester, is where a particular gang of veracious, hustling, crime-doing dogs reside; they call themselves the vultures, and as a gang they more represent that of a mafia, close and tight-knit like a family. they sign an oath under their boss' name and if they dare cross them, their life will be at their consequence. not one dog involved in this family has gotten-away unharmed if escape became their option, and often they'll never be seen again by the likes of the others. they pick their victims from the streets, like vultures, and pick away at their souls until nothing is left but a hollow husk of obedience and utter terror. they become unwavering soldiers under their name, fearful for their life at every move, and motivated only by the will to kill. however unpleasant a life this may sound, you'd truly have to live it to see what it's like.

if you think of it, why else would so many care to join them?

well, the first of these reasons would definitely be safety──this is probably the top-most necessity that the vultures may provide to any of its members. it also offers an amount of freedom other groups cannot give, riches, opportunity, and shelter. all one has to do is sign their life to the boss, and all of this wealth is given in return. within a crime-filled city where a currency derived from the US dollar is passed between the dogs, wealth and the abundance of it is a major contributor to the interest in joining the group. not many dogs really mind contributing their lives toward crime, and thus they willingly join and sign the oath without another thought in mind.

those that are of the faint of heart, however, should quickly turn-away from this chaos to unfold while they still have a chance.

Aurora noticed that Chi was slower than usual on their herb gathering trip. Chi has always been slow being old and blind, but it seemed like he was barely moving. Aurora only broke away from her Commander's side when he insisted that she go ahead and search without him. Aurora didn't venture far and eventually she came across a small withering coltsfoot which she promptly picked. Filled with joy at their success, Aurora rushed back to her teacher's side. She was surprised and concerned to find that he had not gone much farther than when she left him. "Chi, I found some coltsfoot! I'll put it in the pouch."
"Good, that's very good. Here, can you carry the pouch for me?" The old dog sat down, out of breath.
"Uh, yeah. I'll take it. Should we head back to camp now?"
"Yes, in a bit. Let me catch my breath." Chi's breaths were shallow and hoarse. He was struggling to breath and upon closer inspection, struggling to sit. Chi's front legs shook like they were going to break under his weight.
Aurora let out a small whine. "Are you alright? Chi let me carry you back to camp. You need to eat and rest."
The elderly dog nodded. Aurora carefully pushed him on her back and was surprised how light he was. She carried him with ease back to camp. There weren't many dogs in camp, only Laila, Ruby, and Martha. Aurora set Chi down on his bed in the healer's den. The mothers watched worriedly.
"I'll get you some water." Aurora said. She disappeared from the den with a carrying leaf.
Chi closed his eyes and slowly breathed. Aurora came back with the water, but Chi did not drink it. She paced the healer's den not sure what to do. There was no food left in camp and everyone had already consumed the edible herbs. Aurora couldn't remember the last time Chi had eaten anything. If he didn't eat soon, then he won't make it past the moon.
Slowly, hunting parties began coming back empty handed once again. When Kalta's hunting party returned Aurora reported Chi's state to her. "You need to come quickly! Chi won't move."
Kalta and Aurora come back to see Chi curled up in a ball. "He was complaining that he was cold so I tried to cover him with his bed as much as possible. I even gave him some of mine. I don't know what to do. He won't drink any water and we have no food to give him."
Kalta sadly looked at the Healer Commander. "The only thing we can do is wait and hope. I hope the other hunting parties come back soon with a catch and that Chi will last that long. But more than half the kennel is already back and there has been no signs of prey at all."
Aurora curled up against Chi, her mentor, Commander, and father-figure. He was weak but he managed to whisper to Aurora. "Aurora, you must listen to me." The pyrenean mastiff leaned closer. "I am going to die. I am old and weak. You must take over for me. Use everything I have taught you and carry on as the healer Commander for me."
"What?! Are you crazy? I can't. You are talking nonsense. The hunting parties will come back with food and you can eat. Everything will be alright. You just have to wait a little longer."
"No, it's already too late for me. Do you hear the pups? They constantly cry for food and suckle their mothers raw. I have lived a long life and I am proud to have been a part of this kennel. We must save the future generations and not waste precious food on an old dying dog like me. Please get Kalta so we can make this title change official."
"No. You aren't giving up yet. I won't let you."
Ruby fetched Kalta and she hurriedly ran into the den.
"Kalta, as the beta of this kennel and the only other Commander present at this time, I ask for approval to make Aurora the official healer Commander."
Kalta nods her head in understanding. "Yes, I accept. The vote is unanimous. Aurora will hereby become the new temporary healer Commander until Garland either accepts or denies the position change."
"Wait, what if I don't want to become the Commander? What if I deny it? I do. I refuse to be Commander while Chi is alive."
"I'm sorry, Aurora. But the decision has been made up. Your higher ups have decided for you. Please accept your new ivy." Kalta placed the ring of ivy from Chi's head to Aurora's. Aurora sat there in disbelief. She sat and whined outside the healer's den. Laila kept an eye on Chi. Not long afterwards, she called Aurora in and said that Chi hasn't moved in a while and had become stiff. Aurora gave the final prognosis that Chi had passed on from starvation.
A few days later, Niko's hunting party came back. Draxx and Willow were dragging a boar behind them. Truskett was helping a bleeding and limping Niko into camp. The dogs all yipped and howled in excitement at the bountiful food. Kalta kept order and kept the starving dogs at bay. Aurora, still shocked by the recent events, helped Niko into the healer's den. She led him over to the herb pouch and went through the herbs. Her heart sank as she realized she didn't have any bindweed for Niko's leg. There were no painkiller herbs either. Aurora looked at Niko and said "All I have is this stick. I need some bindweed to make a brace for your leg or it won't heal right. I will go search for some, but for now all I can do is tell you to stay off your feet and get some rest. When they pass out food, I will make sure you get some. For now try to drink some water."
Niko replied through gritted teeth "I better get some food. I nearly died getting it for the kennel. Ow!"
Aurora quickly set off to find some bindweed.

When Garland's hunting party returned to camp, they were also met with yips of joy at their success. Kalta pulled Garland and Natiri aside to tell them of the news. Natiri couldn't believe her ears and ran into the healer's den to see for herself. Cries of agony filled camp and the celebrating dogs silenced. Natiri wailed and howled at the sight of her brother's body. She nudged Chi's head and was mortified that it was cold and stiff. Her brother, the one who was the only constant in her life, who nursed her back to health when they were on their own, and the one family she had left had passed away alone, without her. She wasn't there for his last moments. She was wasting her time being at the back of the hunting party. She should have been there with Chi. If she had known that he was in such a terrible condition, she would have insisted on staying with him and fought off any dog who tried to tell her otherwise. Chi was her whole world and she knew he wouldn't last forever and she wanted to be with him in his most vulnerable moments in his life.
Stella walked into the den, her tail in between her legs. With her ears pinned back she asked "Natiri, maybe we should go on a walk. I know this is a huge shock to you and maybe you can sort your thoughts away from camp. I will go with you. It's just that you're scaring the pups."
Natiri looked coldly at Stella. She growled a low growl until Garland entered the den. He looked at her with a disapproving look and Natiri silently left the den. Garland told Stella to follow her and she did.
Garland called for a meeting with the kennel. Everyone eyed the fresh meat in the kill pile, but when the Commanders snarled at them, they walked towards the meeting place.
Garland announced that Chi had passed away. He approved Aurora of being the new healer Commander. Stark also passed his exam and became a full-fledged hunter. Garland said that we are blessed by the ancestors for this meat in this trying time. In exchange for the meat, they have reclaimed Chi and he will now look after the kennel from the heavens. This feast will celebrate not only a change of luck, but also a dear kennelmate.
