Neritefang, Minnowflash, and Starlingsky were unsuccessfully trying to make small talk on their border patrol. Neritefang had no use for any trivial conversation, and Starlingsky was having to shake off Minnowflash’s blatant attempts of flirting. “Shush!” Neritefang hissed. “Someone’s here.” Starlingsky was very grateful for the distraction.
“A new member?”
“Perhaps.”
“Hey!”
The she-cat spun around. “W-who’s there?”
“Oh, she’s pretty too. Although, not as pretty as you.” Minnowflash winked at Starlingsky.
“Nope. She’s prettier. Go after her.” Starlingsky said grumpily.
“Don’t worry, we’re friendly enough.” Neritefang assured.
“I-I’m just l-lost.” The she-cat said. “Really lost.”
“Where are you from?” Neritefang pressed.
“I came from a house.”
“You’re a kittypet?”
“I don’t know what that means, but I wandered too far, and now I can’t find my way back home.”
“Come with us, then. You can stay in TwistedClan until we figure out how to help you.”

“Did you figure out names yet?” Galalight interrupted Silverstem and Wolfclaw’s conversation.
“I think so.” Silverstem nudged the first kit. “This little one will be Rabbitkit.”
“His ears are pretty big.” Galalight chuckled.
“And Deerkit, Squirrelkit, Mousekit, and Shrewkit.” Silverstem finished.
“And they’re all so beautiful.” Wolfclaw winced.
“Everything okay?” Galalight asked.
“Fine.”

Jewel stepped into the place the strange cats called TwistedClan with widened eyes. There were a lot more cats here than she first expected. The oldest cat that discovered her retrieved a smaller calico that introduced herself as their “leader”. However, she did spot a run-down nature house towards the back. “That’s like the place I live!” She exclaimed. The other cats only seemed amused. “Do you live with Protectors as well?”
“Protectors?”
“They leave out food and brush your fur.” Jewel explained. “They build those houses for us to live in!”
Morningstar scoffed. “We don’t depend on Twolegs for their help. If you want to run back to them, be our guest.”
“I don’t know how to get back.” Jewel’s head and tail drooped. “I tried to but now I’m here.”
“I will allow you to stay with us until you decide to leave or stay, only if you pull your weight hunting.” Morningstar said.
Jewel perked up. “I’m great at hunting! Mice don’t hear me coming.” Starlingsky smirked in disbelief. “Really, I am!” Jewel protested. “I can prove it.”
Morningstar’s whiskers twitched. “Don’t worry, you will.”

Morningstar took a deep breath. This warrior ceremony is going to be long, she thought. “Let all cats able to climb a tree gather here below!” She didn’t need to call TwistedClan’s attention to her as most cats were already milling about in the clearing, but it was now tradition. “Now, we have quite a bit to go over.” She started and got a few chuckles. “Jewel, you’re first.” Jewel had already been briefed on what was expected of her at this ceremony. Since she was joining as an adult warrior, she was allowed to stay on the ground to receive her warrior name. She stood up tall while trying to not let her legs shake from nervousness. “Do you promise to protect the Clan with your life?”
“I do.” Jewel said.
“Then you shall be called Quietstep.” Morningstar was pleased that Quietstep seemed to like her new name as she puffed out her chest. She hoped a warrior name allowed her to be seen as just another new member as any loner. She had already proved to be a worthy hunter, even if she still got turned around in her new territory. “Thunderpaw, please join me.” She waited for the tom to climb onto the same branch. “Thunderpaw, do you promise to uphold TwistedClan’s traditions and to protect the Clan with your life?” Morningstar asked.
“I do.” Thunderpaw said.
“Then, I give you your warrior name, Thundercry. Remember that your opinions matter to the clan and to use your voice.” Morningstar rested her muzzle on Thundercry’s forehead. He leaped down to the ground and Willowpaw took his place. “Willowpaw, do you promise to uphold TwistedClan’s traditions and to protect the Clan with your life?”
“I do.” Willowpaw said.
“Then, I give you your warrior name, Willowbranch. Remember to always remain steady in your decisions.” Morningstar rested her muzzle on Willowbranch’s forehead, and Goosepaw joined them. “Goosepaw, do you promise to uphold TwistedClan’s traditions and to protect the Clan with your life?” Morningstar said.
“I do.” Goosepaw said.
“Then, I give you your warrior name, Goosedawn. Remember to always be caring, even to those who don’t deserve it.” Morningstar rested her muzzle on Goosedawn’s forehead. “Maplepaw,” The apprentice joined her. “do you promise to uphold TwistedClan’s traditions and to protect the Clan with your life?”
“I do.” Maplepaw said.
“Then, I give you your warrior name, Maplebreeze. Remember to enjoy the path of life you take.” Morningstar rested her muzzle on Maplebreeze’s forehead. “And lastly, Stormpaw. Do you promise to uphold TwistedClan’s traditions and to protect the Clan with your life?”
“I do.” Stormpaw said.
“Then, I give you your warrior name, Stormheart. Remember to keep your family in your heart at all times.” Morningstar rested her muzzle on Stormheart’s forehead while TwistedClan cheered. Morningstar followed Stormheart down from the tree. All five of the siblings gathered around a purring Birchwhisker. “Congratulations.” Morningstar said. “I know Stormstrike and Cloudpaw are proud of you all.”

Spottednose tossed and turned in his nest. He had made sure to dig up the softest feathers he could find, but his bones still weren’t happy with the result. He always tried to not diagnose himself, but thoughts of arthritis setting in still floated around in his mind. Sitting up with a final grunt, he looked to the moon. Thankfully, it was on its way back to the horizon, so Spottednose gave up the idea of falling back asleep and stretched. On the way out, he swung by the two ill cats. Wolfclaw and Sagefeather were still curled up in the medicine den complaining of body pains that herbs did not soothe. While Spottednose was growing more worried every day, he figured at some point they would discover a proper treatment. He approached Sagefeather first. She was uneasily resting, her tail twitching in her sleep but didn’t wake up when he rested his paw on her flank. Now he turned to Wolfclaw and put his paw on his chest. Spottednose pressed harder. Yes, there it was. His breathing was very shallow, barely raising his chest. Spottednose now prodded Wolfclaw with his claws. “Come on, wake up.” He muttered in his ear. The deputy stirred but didn’t awake. “Galalight!” He dashed back to claw his apprentice to her feet. He grabbed lamb’s ear and juniper berries from the store, but by the time he reached Wolfclaw once more, his breathing had ceased. By now, Galalight was wide awake from adrenaline and checking Sagefeather. Spottednose started chest compressions to no avail. Wolfclaw had passed and by sunrise Sagefeather had followed him to StarClan.

Galalight was sent to fetch Morningstar at the crack of dawn. The medicine cats didn’t want to announce a warrior and the deputy had died overnight until they had discussed all the options with the leader.
“Well, what are we going to do? Lie and say they went on a walk and just haven’t come back yet?” Morningstar said exasperated.
“Of course not.” Spottednose snapped. “Just we need to figure out how to tell the clan. We can’t have a Stormstrike and Gingerblaze panic again, can we?”
“Why did they die? That’s where we need to start.” There was an uncomfortable silence. “What good are medicine cats if they can’t tell you what the hell is happening!?”
“We’re trying, but we haven’t seen anything like this before! Herbs don’t help. I wish this was just a cough, but it’s not!” Spottednose argued. “I’m supposed to connect the recent deaths to one source, but no one had the same symptoms. Wolfclaw and Sagefeather had a gut ache. That might be all we can attribute this to at this time.”
Morningstar rolled her eyes. “Fine. That is what we tell the clan. And you will tell Silverstem. Not Galalight, you Spottednose.”
“Fair.” Spottednose relented. “But the new deputy needs to be aware of the prophecy.”
Morningstar closed her eyes and sighed. “I will need to appoint one first.” Galalight opened her mouth. “Yes, I will announce it by dusk today.” She closed her mouth. “Let’s go break the news.” The sun was now peeking out from behind the trees, and cats were already stirring.
“Any news on patrols yet today?” Stormheart called cheerily. “Something wrong?” He must have seen the worry on his old mentor’s face.
“He’s dead.” Morningstar said. “Sagefeather too. Let Spottednose tell Silverstem before anyone else.” Stormheart froze shocked and allowed the medicine cat to squeeze past him to break the news to the queen. “I’ll assign patrols for the day. Galalight, can you tell Rushingflame?”

Silverstem buried her head into the small bodies of her kits. “Why?” She whimpered. “I was finally happy again, Birchwhisker.” The older warrior laid beside the grieving queen, called to help after she was told the news.
“I don’t know. Life is never fair.” Birchwhisker licked Silverstem’s head.
“This isn’t unfair, this is cruel.” Silverstem said.
“You’re strong,” Birchwhisker assured. “You’ll get through this.”

“Hey, are you okay?” Quietstep’s soft voice drifted close to Rushingflame’s face. “Were you close to Wolfclaw or Sagefeather?”
“She was my mother.” Rushingflame choked out. “I was her only kit.”
“I’m sorry.” Quietstep wrapped her tail around her shoulders. “I can’t even imagine losing a mother.”
“You didn’t know your mother?” Rushingflame asked.
“No. Protectors separate us from our litters very young, so I don’t remember very much about my family.” She noticed the shocked look on the warrior’s face. “I didn’t mind, I never knew anything different.”
“How’s it going?” Flameleap joined their duo. “Doing alright?”
“I guess.” Rushingflame shrugged. “I just can’t believe she’s gone.”
“If you need anything, let us know.” Flameleap added. “Anyone.”
“Thanks.” Rushingflame weakly smiled. “I appreciate it.”

“My offer still stands.” Morningstar said to Birchwhisker. “Your kits are grown. What do you think?”
“I’m getting too old.” Birchwhisker said. “And I’m not fit for the job. I’m a good warrior, and that’s where I want to be at this moment.”
“If you’re too old, I’m ancient.” Morningstar smiled. “But I respect your decision, and while I think you would be a fine deputy, you’ll always stay a great warrior, friend, and advisor.”
“Thank you,” Birchwhisker said.
Morningstar got to her feet and started towards the fresh-kill pile but paused. “What would you think about Sunchaser?”
Birchwhisker thought for a second. “He would be great.” She decided.
“Good.”

Minnowflash laid next to Graybelly, Willowbranch, and Goosedawn. “So, who’s going to be the next deputy?” He asked. Graybelly looked at the two native TwistedClan warriors.
“Do you think it’ll be Ruststripe?” Goosedawn said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets it.”
“What about Birchwhisker?” Willowbranch asked. “She was in the running last time, but she was still in the nursery with us? Honeytail, Nightpelt, over here!” The two toms wandered over. “Deputy: Birchwhisker or Ruststripe?”
“Can she pick her mate for deputy?” Honeytail wondered.
“I don’t think there’s any rule against it.” Nightpelt said. “Just that they are appointed before midnight.”
“And she didn’t even follow that last time.” Willowbranch said.
“Oh, did anything bad happen then?” Graybelly said.
“Well, he’s dead now.” Nightpelt said. “That shouldn’t count as a good thing.”
“Would she even announce another tonight?” Windcall surprised the growing group of gossipers.
“She said she would just assign patrols for the day. That must mean a deputy will be appointed tonight.” Stormheart also chimed in. “Have we thought about Neritefang?”
“Too old.” Willowbranch shook her head. “She should be retiring in a few moons anyway.”
“I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, yes?” Neritefang hissed and swiped at Willowbranch’s ears.
“Eep!”

“Hey.” Flameleap caught Nightpelt before they got too far in their day’s patrol. “Can we talk for a second?”
“Make it quick.” Nightpelt flicked an ear back. “I want a big dinner tonight.”
“I wanted to ask if you wanted to watch the sunset by the creek tonight.” Flameleap said. “With me.”
“I don’t know, I want to be here for the deputy announcement.”
“Right, right.” Flameleap stammered. “I forgot about that.”
“Tomorrow?”
“Sounds like a plan.”

Rainsong sat behind her kits, looking up at the Ceremony Tree with Sunchaser sitting beside her. The entire Clan was gathered to hear Morningstar’s announcement and then to hold the vigil for the two dead warriors. She had been sitting in the tree for hours in silence. The sun was starting to creep below the tree line, and TwistedClan was getting restless. Petalpaw and Dovepaw were teaching Tigerkit how to stalk and Patchpaw was telling training stories to Riverkit and Cinderkit.
“TwistedClan, may I have your attention?” Morningstar was now standing tall, her calico coat golden in the setting sun. “I say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve my choice. The new deputy of TwistedClan is Sunchaser.” She said. Rainsong glanced shocked to Sunchaser, who looked just as surprised as everyone else. He stood up quickly and dipped his head in acknowledgement. Rounds of cheering for Sunchaser started up, and Morningstar jumped from the tree to approach her new deputy. “Sorry, I didn’t discuss this with you beforehand.” She said in a low voice. “I thought a younger cat would bring new energy to the Clan.”
“Thank you for choosing me.” Sunchaser said. “I won’t let you or TwistedClan down.”

Galalight gratefully slipped into a deep sleep after the stressful day. Soon however, she found herself in the forest of StarClan. She was surprised when she seemed to be alone. “Welcome, Galalight.” A small voice came from behind her. “Do you remember me?”
She spun and was met with the small figure of Pebblepaw. “Of course.” She smiled. “I’d never forget you, Pebblepaw.”
“You were Galapaw when I was in TwistedClan.”
“A lot of time has passed.” Galalight said. “I’m sorry you didn’t make it. You fought like a warrior.”
“I was quite angry at first, but it’s nice here.” Pebblepaw shrugged. “I do miss Silverstem, though.”
Galalight didn’t want to be rude, but she did want to direct this conversation to something perhaps helpful to TwistedClan. “I haven’t dreamt of you yet.” She started. “I actually haven’t had a specific StarClan dream outside of the Moonpool.”
“Signs are rather confusing to us as well.” Pebblepaw said. “I don’t necessarily understand everything, but we are trying to help.”
“Anything particular tonight?” Galalight asked.
“Just that it’s no one’s fault. This sickness, if you will, it races across lands not bothering to stop for any border markings. Don’t blame yourselves for events out of your control. Even StarClan does not have control on most things. The forces of nature will always prevail.” Pebblepaw took a deep breath, or whatever dead cats do when they are tired of speaking.
“I understand.” Galalight flicked her tail back and forth thinking. “Thank you for the insight, Pebblepaw. I’ll tell Silverstem that you’re doing well.”
“And say hello to her new kits.” He said excitedly. “I’m glad she’s moved on.”
“She’s trying at least.” Galalight said. “Is Wolfclaw coming too?”
“He’s working hard to interpret the stars. That’s why they sent me tonight. Just a messenger of larger things.” Pebblepaw paused. “But it’s nearly sunrise. Good dreams, Galalight.”
Galalight blinked open her eyes. Sure enough, the sun was starting to bleed golden rays into the dawn sky. She rolled over to shake Spottednose awake. “Get up!” She hissed.
“Hmpf.” Spottednose huffed. “Is someone dying?”
“No.”
“Then let me sleep!”
Galalight rolled her eyes at the cranky old cat. She could tell him after he had eaten breakfast; he would be in a better mood then.

Aspencloud was nestled up in the combatant's den, shivering profusely. She wasn't accustomed to the cold climates of their territory yet, and when she wasn't off doing her duties, she spent her time trembling and uttering complaints to herself. Most of the other cats in the clan had thick or long fur, meaning they were well adapted to the frigid breezes that would pass by often. Pinepond and Petalsong were both ones that had shorter fur, similar to Aspencloud's, but they appeared to be unfazed by the bitter winds, being able to spend their free time happily resting about, or chatting politely with the other mere amount of cats. In fact, Petalsong, the clan's healer, happened to be the rather tranquil feline, and like most days, was currently occupied with sorting out the healer's den.

Aspencloud let herself shiver once more before padding towards Petalsong. Her patrol wasn't going out until a while -- might as well do something besides freezing in the cold. Petalsong had been humming a soft tune before she noticed Aspencloud approach, in which she quickly suppressed her croon. Petalsong nodded at the presence of the other she-cat before pushing her small bundle of herbs to the side with a swift movement of her paw.

"Greetings, Aspencloud. Is there anything I can assist you with?" Petalsong questioned in a mellow tone, and Aspencloud shrugged.

"N--not much. I figured might as well talk to someone as I wait for my time to go out hunting, it's something to distract me from the cold anyhow. Talking about the cold, how do you happen to deal with it so well? I mean, personally I'm freezing but --" Aspencloud stopped abruptly, noticing the tiny frown that Petalsong wore. The palely coloured she-cat had smothered a frown herself with a flick of her tail. "Oh, ah. Sorry. If you want me to stop blabbering and let you do whatever you need to do, I can leave."

Petalsong gave her a brisk shake of her head. "No, no. It's fine, you may go on. I have time to do it later, and I can't avoid not talking to someone forever." Petalsong smiled slightly, and Aspencloud had a tough time attempting to figure out if it was a real one or one out of pity. "I do get cold, it simply don't let it bother me. If you don't pay so much attention to how cold you may be, it does help to a degree. Tending to my den does happen to get my mind off the cold, as well. You're always welcome to help me, if you'd like. I'm always in need of an extra paw, and it's something to distract you from the cold." Petalsong offered, and Aspencloud hesitated.

"I mean, if it doesn't bother you, I'd love to. As long as there's no freezing stab feeling at my nose, I'm fine." Aspencloud grinned, and Petalsong returned the smile.

"I don't mind."

"I would first like to start by mentioning the bravery of all who chose to join Forestclan," said Applestar from the Speaker's Tree. "Many of us who joined during Honeystar's time were newcomers to the world of clans and yet we still decided to make this our home. But those who come from disbanded clans, whether due to natural disaster, violence, or other things, are braver. For they chose to put their faith in a clan they didn't know. All they had was hope and a promise that could have easily been broken." He paused, looking at the crowd that filled the camp. "We remember those who died in seasons past: Alderclaw, Bramblebush, Falconflower. But we also remember who still live with us: Hillfang, Ashstripe, Cherryclaw, Tumbletoes, and so many others. However, today we celebrate one particular family who placed their trust in us to teach their kits and to give them a more welcoming home. Today, we honor Ophelia's kits: Darkpaw, Patchpaw, and Rabbitpaw." A few cheers escaped the crowd, namely from the other apprentices, the mentors, and Ophelia herself. "I would like to call them and their mentors up to stand next to Boulderpelt."

Rabbitpaw pushed through the crowd, his littermates following close behind. They ended up near Boulderpelt who grinned at them and flicked her tail to indicate where they should stand. She nudged Darkpaw playfully who ducked his head, embarrassed at how the deputy (though his mentor) was paying such public attention to him. Hillfang and Reedfur stood next to Rabbitpaw and Patchwhisker respectively, and all of the cats looked out to the crowd with an ear flicking upward to catch Applestar's words.

"From this day forward, these three young cats are apprentices no more. I would like to welcome them into the clan as Darkstream, Patchwhisker, and Rabbitstorm. Darkstream has been a hard worker from day one, throwing all of his energy into every task given to him--care of the nursery, hunting, fishing, sparring, cleaning the nests, and more. Boulderpelt noticed his love of the water immediately and received help from her siblings, Adderstream and Barleystream, who helped to hone Darkstream's skills. Mila and her kits were drafted to help improve his skills in fishing but unfortunately..." The crowd chuckled and Darkstream's ears flattened as everyone remembered the day when he came home, sodden, and with a bleeding nose after a fish had smacked him in the face as it tried to flip away. "Despite these mishaps, I am proud to call Darkstream one of the best swimmers of his generation. Now Rabbitstorm was hard to train, Hillfang said to me, but if he became passionate about something, nothing could keep him from doing it. Though he might be called lazy by some, I would argue that he is simply so fast at his tasks that he can afford to lie around all day. Which is why I plan on him to be on every patrol, day and ni- No?" asked Applestar, looking down at Rabbitstorm who stared up with horrified yellow eyes. "Ah, well I suppose we can let him rest occasionally."

"Thank Starclan," Rabbitstorm muttered audibly. Then he ducked his head as he realized that everyone had heard him and was chuckling.

Applestar chuckled and continued. "And last but not least, I would like to remind everyone of one of the earliest warriors to join the clan. Briarwhisker was dedicated to her role of hunter, and took both it and training the next generation in it seriously. I talk about her because I believe that she would be proud of Patchwhisker, who had taken to hunting like a fish to water or a bird to air. Her mentor understood her potential and nurtured it to maturity, giving us the cat we see before us today: someone who is kind, understanding, and dedicated to her clan and duties. I would like to finish by congratulating our new warriors. Welcome to the next part of your lives."

The crowd erupted into cheers.

Doveheart stumbled through the forest, once-clean fur now tangled and matted. She panted, wondering if she would be caught. Or would die. She had a high fever and knew that if she didn't get help soon, it would be all over.

"Starclan," gasped someone from in front of her, "are you alright?"

The voice sounded male and she looked up to see the blurry form of a brown-and-black tom. She swayed and barely managed to catch herself. It wasn't enough, however, and she fell a moment later to the forest floor.

"Tumbletoes!" the tom screamed. "Lavender! I need lavender!"

Doveheart closed her eyes and barely heard as some time later--perhaps a short time, perhaps an eternity--another cat came crashing through the foliage, smelling of herbs. Her jaw was forced open and she felt something being put inside her mouth. It'll help, she thought, dizzy. Swallow. Remember how to swallow? She swallowed. A few moments later, she blacked out.

Larknose lay next to the white-furred molly who smelled of another clan. When had she caught such a sickness? He had thought and had confirmed she had a severe infection that was now being treated. It came from a severe side wound that seemed to have come from a badger that was irate at having its territory trespassed by a lone cat.

"How long are you going to lie there?" asked Dustleaf, amused.

Larknose jumped and glanced at her guiltily. "I don't know," he said. "I guess until she wakes up?"

"You know as well as I do that it might not be for a while," she said chidingly. "She needs time to recover. You should be looking for more herbs. Or perhaps asking Starclan for guidance, if you feel it necessary."

Larknose's body heated. "Don't you believe in Starclan?" he asked, mildly offended.

Dustleaf smiled. "Of course I do but perhaps you'd like to have an official diagnosis from Crowcloud, my mentor. I'm sure he would agree with me about her." The "her" she referred to was the strange molly, of course.

Larknose sighed. "I..." he trailed off.

Dustleaf quickly pressed herself against him comfortingly. "It'll be okay," she said gently. "She seems strong. I'm sure she'll make a full recovery."

I hope so, thought Larknose, a strange but pleasant feeling stirring inside him. I really really hope so.

Eleven days into the moon, most of the excitement seemed to be over. Isidora's kits had been apprenticed two days after the warrior ceremonies, the new molly was resting in the medicine cats' den, and patrols hadn't been able to find much more than badger tracks and scents. The greenleaf sun had allowed flowers to bloom and prey to multiply, and even warmed the river slightly. Fishing patrols had long returned to the River but only now were they truly successful in finding more than a few fish once every couple of half-moons. Now, they could find some fish almost every quarter-moon.

"Shouldn't Darkstream be here today?" grumbled Rabbitstorm, staring distastefully at the rushing water.

Adderstream chuckled, sharing a look with Kestrelclaw. "We'd rather everyone be able to perform all duties," he said. "I might be one of the best fishers but I can still hunt land animals and birds. I can still fight. That's why we make sure to train our apprentices in all skills before letting their mentor train them in a particular specialty."

"Don't be so sour," said Martennose, looking at Rabbitstorm. "I don't like swimming but I still volunteer because I'd rather remember how to swim than drown." That quieted the young tom though he still hissed quietly to express his displeasure.

Ophelia put her paw into the water, careful to keep her balance on the edge. Icefang made his way closer to the shore and crouched, almost as though he were ready to leap into the water. Instead, he put his paw as far as he could into the River. One by one, the other cats copied them. The patrol continued talking, mostly about the greenleaf, occasionally sharing stories of those who came before, only stopping to attempt flipping a fish out of the water. Sometimes they succeeded--Icefang never missed and Adderstream had more successes than others--and sometimes they failed--Kestrelclaw gave up after a while and settled further on the shore to keep watch. The patrol passed quietly, and eventually they picked up their prey, a few good-sized fish, and headed home.

"Okay, I'll be the leader!" declared Poppykit. "I'ma be Poppystar, leader of Forestclan! And my deputy will be..." She looked around and noticed Sandkit shuffling up to her. "Sandkit! What do you want your warrior name to be?"

"Uhh," stammered Sandkit, surprised at being chosen for deputy. "Sandclaw?"

"Nonono whatabout Sandblaze?!" asked Skipperkit eagerly.

Poppykit looked at her sister with a severe frown. "That's not a name," she said.

"Hmph," said Skipperkit, flopping down dramatically. "You never like my names."

"Well if you'd be more sensible about it..." said Poppykit imperiously.

"Well look what we've got here," said Silverstorm teasingly. "A whole kit-clan!"

"I'll have you know that my name is Poppystar," declared Poppykit. "This is my deputy, Sandclaw! And uhh, my medicine cat is..." She looked around pleadingly.

"Me!" exclaimed Thrushkit. "And I'm Thrushflight!"

Poppykit groaned and Silverstorm laughed gently. "Well," she said to the ginger-and-white kit, "part of being a good leader is knowing when you're beaten."

"Never!" exclaimed Rosekit, tackling Silverstorm. "Nevereverever!"

"Oh no!" groaned Silverstorm, falling to the ground dramatically. "Help me!"

"Attack!" called Poppykit and the rest of the kits followed except for Thrushkit, who hung back, tail twitching with impatience.

"Are they bothering you?" called Tipnose from the warriors' den, where she and Scorchpelt stood.

"Ahhhhh!" cried Silverstorm.

"Alright!" Tipnose yelled back. "Tell us if you need any help!" She disappeared back into the darkness of the den.

By this point, a small crowd of warriors had gathered to cheer on the kits. Hareclaw was calling out battle tips, Ezio and Fallowstripe were yelling enthusiastically, and Aspentail was laughing at Silverstorm's plight. Finally, the crowd was broken up by Cherryclaw, who insisted that her kits needed to eat and rest. That ended the games and even Poppykit hopped off Silverstorm happily, waving her tail victoriously.

"We're going to do a little sparring today," said Heronface, looking at the three apprentices. "What are the rules?"

"No claws," the apprentices chorused, "no biting, don't be ashamed to surrender, don't pretend to surrender."

Dawnface smiled. "They learned quickly," he said quietly to Heronface.

"I threatened to tell their father and when that wasn't enough," she responded quickly in the same quiet tone, "I told them that I would have Dustleaf talk to their mom and see what she had to say. The fear of punishment from Starclan and worst of all, their mother, seemed to do the trick."

Dawnface laughed. "Well," he said louder for the benefit of the three apprentices, "I look forward to seeing what you can do."

"Additionally," broke in Orchidwhisker, "you will be sparring with us later today."

Beechpaw looked at Orchidwhisker warily. "...are you going to pull tricks?" she asked. She got nothing in response but a smile.

"Alright," said Heronface, "you know the drill. Today, Minkpaw and Flypaw will start. Winner spars against Beechpaw."

"I go again?" Minkpaw complained.

"Yes," explained Orchidwhisker patiently, "because you won last time."

"Why can't Beechpaw go first today?" she grumbled. In the end, Minkpaw acquiesced and tussled with Flypaw until she pinned him soundly. Their brother was spindly and quiet compared to his sisters, but he was fast and consistently came up with ways to avoid his sisters' pranks on him. However, he almost always lost in tests of brute strength such as this. It occurred more often now, and Minkpaw wondered if he even tried anymore.

Minkpaw and Beechpaw sparred for longer than Minkpaw and Flypaw, but of course Minkpaw won. She almost always did, as she had grown to be far larger than both of her siblings. Their dad, Aspentail, sometimes said that she must have taken after her mom in size.

"Alright," said Dawnstorm after the sisters had recovered. "Now, onto something new."

"Fighting dirty?" asked Flypaw, a hint of a grin showing on his normally-stoic face. Minkpaw caught her brother's eye and his grin discomfited her. His whiskers twitched in a silent laugh.

Dawnstorm smiled. "You guessed it. Today, we'll be teaching you tactics on how to defeat an opponent quickly and easily, so that you minimize your chances of being hurt. Of course," he said, giving the three of them a glare, "we only fight after the other group or other cat refuses to back down and leave. So this is always a last resort. But it's good to have these tricks ready and hope that you'll never need them, rather not knowing that they're possible and losing."

Flypaw nodded enthusiastically. "When do we start?"

"Well," said Heronface, breaking in, "we'll be sparring with you separately for a today and the next few days, and then we'll regroup for a group spar. Got it?"

"Got it," the apprentices chorused.

"Good. Now Beechpaw, follow me."

Over halfway into the moon, Applestar still sent out patrols to look for the badgers. Though neither hair nor hide had been seen, their footprints and a faint scent surrounding them kept appearing throughout the territory. It was worrisome.

"Do you think we'll run into the badgers?" Darkstream asked Embernose as they padded through the forest.

"I doubt it," he replied, looking around briefly. "And besides, Applestar and Swancloud could easily take care of them." Despite his advancing age, Applestar still had all nine of his lives, likely because he hadn't yet faced any life-threatening dangers.

"We should be more worried about refugees or invaders," said Applestar, catching up to Darkstream and Embernose. "It's not the first time that we've had refugees come in; I just hope we won't have another wave of them."

"Another wave?" asked Robinpelt, emerging from the shadows.

The toms jumped and Applestar nodded before he appeared to remember that Robinpelt was blind. "Yeah," he said. "When I was...an apprentice, or maybe a young warrior, lots of cats came from recently-abandoned clans. Alderclaw was one of our first warriors and he was from...Riverclan? Streamclan? Rushingclan? Something like that. Falconflower, Aspentail, Asterstripe... Lots of others came and I remember Honeystar grilling the other leaders at Gatherings what they thought about it. Clans disband all of the time, but it's always worrisome when they're your neighbors or if it was an established clan." He sighed, thinking of past times. Darkstream wondered what it would have been like, to grow up during Honeystar's reign. She seemed like an amazing leader, from the stories he heard told by the older warriors and even some of the younger warriors who'd grown up in the clan or joined as young apprentices.

"I'm sure that once we get the full story, it won't be as bad," said Robinpelt reassuringly.

"You're probably right," Applestar admitted. "Still, it's my job to worry, isn't it?"

"Are they doing well?"

"Of course, Honeystar." Dustleaf sat next to the former leader next to Starclan's version of the Moonpool. "Flypaw took to sparring once he could utilize that speed of his."

Honeystar chuckled. "I've walked his dreams. I see how worried he gets that he'll be overshadowed by his sisters...by me. Tell him, Dustleaf," she said more seriously. "Tell him that I love him and that he's doing such a wonderful job."

Dustleaf nodded. "Always," she said with a smile. As the sky brightened, her form blurred then disappeared. Honeystar stood up and began the trip back to camp. Though she never felt tired, today, she just wanted to savor the moment.

"Your clan is doing just fine," said Minkstar, coming from the forest. "Better than...better than what I had done."

Honeystar's tail twitched and she looked away. Her grandfather, or possible her great-grandfather--they'd never figured out how many generations separated them for her other ancestors and his other descendants went to whatever afterlives existed for loners--walked up to her and nuzzled her comfortingly. "I worry. I know that Applestar has done an amazing job so far, but I'm worried. What will his first test look like? How will he deal with the loss of a clanmate? He's known about death since he was a young warrior," she said quickly before Minkstar could argue, "but not since he's been leader. Will he blame himself? Will he withdraw?"

"You shouldn't worry about this," he said. "When the time comes, he will likely come here for advice. And you can remind him that life isn't always full of death. It's full of the life that comes from a kitten's first mewl, the life that comes from love, from friendship, and from family. You will be here for him, the entirety of Starclan will be here for him, and so will his clanmates. He made a good choice in picking Boulderpelt; I've watched her from her birth and she has done nothing but make us proud. You made a good choice in picking him. But now it's his time. And you can't be there, holding him by the scruff. He has to make his own decisions and missteps. He has to learn."

A faint outline appeared in front of them. If she looked hard enough, she could almost make out the features of Tumbletoes. A shriek of laughter startled her before she remembered that it was simply Thymekit, rolling on the ground with Bleakstone on top of her. She shook her head, smiling. Those two kits were inseparable and as Thymekit wanted to stay by Tumbletoes's side day and night, Bleakstone stayed with them too.

"They would have been good to each other," murmured Minkstar, seemingly echoing Honeystar's thoughts. "It's a pity..."

"Oh! Honeystar! Minkstar!" Shellfur bounded up to them, neatly clearing the two kits. "Have you seen Fleckstorm?" When Honeystar and Minkstar shook their heads, the tortoiseshell molly stalked off, muttering curses under her breath.

Honeystar laughed. Life on both sides was good.

"Knock knock," Mousestone stretched out in her nest, careful not to bump Novella where she was curled around her, smiling as she spotted Dusklight hovering in the mouth of the den. "Morning," she purred, "no patrol for you this morning?" Dusklight shook his head, coming further into the den and placing a rabbit down at the edge of her nest. "I convinced Longriver to give me the day off so I could catch up. Couldn't let two of my favourite girls come back without a proper welcome," his face softened a little, "how are you doing?"
"I'm alright, really," Mousestone blew out a sigh, a small smile crooking her maw as Novella pressed her forehead to the back of her neck, "there were a lot of things in EchoClan that were... hard to see, but I have Novella to support me, and I know I can count on you and Goldleaf if it ever gets too much. Mostly I'm just glad to be home, and I'm happy that we're all safe and healthy. Being responsible for so many cats was... well. I don't know how Badgerstar does it, for sure."
"He doesn't give himself enough credit for keeping all of us in check, really," Dusklight said with a light laugh. Novella blinked at him blearily, with a light smile. Dusklight laughed again. "I missed you too, Novella. Both of you. Place just wasn't the same without my best partners in crime." Novella's smile got wider, before she stretched around her mate again and touched her nose to her cheek. Mousestone purred, happily. "I lost count of the times I wish you were with us, really. I'm sorry we had to leave you behind."
"I forgive you," Dusklight said, "I know why you had to, but the next time you embark on a potentially life threatening adventure, I don't care what I've got going on, nothing's going to stop me from coming with you." Mousestone let out a laugh, gently shoving at her friend with one of her front paws. He barely swayed. "You know what? I think I'd be alright with that," she grinned at him, "you are my best friend after all. You always knowing just what to say to keep me grounded kind of comes with the territory."
"And you're mine," Dusklight smiled, his eye shining with happiness, "I was really worried, you know? I know you can take care of yourself, and I know Novella would never let anything happen to you but... every day that you weren't home I couldn't help but miss you like anything."
"It's strange, isn't it?" Mousestone let out a short laugh. "All of the little things that lead to us being together. Novella being here, you and I growing up in the nursery together... I think I took for granted how lucky I was to have all of you around. Without you and Dawnblossom it felt like missing a limb." Novella nodded, eyes softening a little and Mousestone smiled. "I missed Sedgefire too. And Halfpond, however painful it is to watch he and Dawnblossom pining without ever doing anything."
"He's trying," Dusklight protested, "they're just.... busy."
"Uh-huh."
"Novella! Tell her to be nice." Novella just shrugged, giving Dusklight a pointed look. "Okay, you might be right, but Dawnblossom is my sister and I do have a contractual blood obligation to defend her with at least a little bit of gusto." Mousestone let out a snickering laugh, leaning back into Novella as the longhaired molly let out a delighted purr. "Okay... you can have a pass for that then. In all seriousness, I am happy to be home. I missed you all, and I'm ready for things to be normal again. You and me, partners in crime, holders of all the prime gossip."
"Yeah... about that," Dusklight blinked, "I told Dawnblossom about Gorseberry." Novella startled, giving Mousestone a confused look. Mousestone blinked at Dusklight. "I know I was gone for a while but you were really that desperate to talk about him?" Dusklight's smile was shy, as he ducked his head. "Yeah. I'm in love with him. I don't think I want to tell him just yet... but I am. That's a fact I have to face. It's different too, this time, it's not how it was with Halfpond where I was half-convinced. I feel it, with him. Every time I see him my heart feels free. He's like his own personal sun and I feel like I revolve around him. I want... I want to get a better grasp on how he feels first, but he makes me happy, you know? I just- yeah. I wanted to tell you but you were so far away... so now Dawnblossom knows your gossip, I'm sorry. And Novella too, I guess." Mousestone grinned, eyes brimming with almost-tears.
"I'm so happy for you," she mewed, leaning forward to touch noses with him. Her mate swatted her side, casting confused looks between both of them. "Oh, sorry love. Dusklight's been seeing a tom from QuickClan named Gorseberry." Novella's jaw dropped, brow furrowing a little. "I know! I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but Dusklight wanted it to be a secret. I only know because I helped him sneak out to see him when he was in the medicine den with his eye." Novella's eyes flicked between Dusklight and Mousestone, making Dusklight laugh out loud.
"Yes, that's where I was during the snowstorm." Novella straightened up with a smirk. "I knew you were too smart to think I'd been there the whole night, but... well. It was new and I wasn't exactly sure about how Badgerstar would take to it, so... I kept it quiet. Sorry I didn't tell you, Novi, I should have." Novella shook her head, amused, leaning forward to touch noses with Dusklight. All is forgiven.
"Good," he said with a laugh, "I couldn't stand having either of you two mad at me."
"We could never stay mad at you," Mousestone said with a smile, "now shut up and push that rabbit closer. I'm starving!"

The sun shone down on another bright day in GroveClan, the Greenleaf sun warming the cats. With most of the clan away on patrol, the campground had become a play space for the nursery's kits. Woodbloom and her older kits scampered about on one side of the camp, while Silvermoon and Maplefall lounged with Flowershine, the three of them watching as Silvermoon's litter batted a mossball around with Maplefall and Lionheart's kits.
Lionheart and Badgerstar sat close together, watching their kits from the shade of the nursery. Badgerstar's eyes glittered with pride, and fondness. Lionheart smiled. "You did a good job, you know," she mewed, nodding to them, "both with the kits and with the clan. Do you remember how it was when we first came here?"
"Just me and you," Badgerstar said with a laugh, "I was so small back then... so little and afraid. I had no idea what I was doing but... you've taught me a lot. Things have changed, I guess, but you have as much claim to the credit as I do." Lionheart shook her head with an amused smile. "I've just been here to support you, it's what a deputy does. Everything that this clan has survived, the bonds that have been forged here, the safety of this camp... that's all you. Every tough decision has been you. Every alliance has been you. Every ounce of compassion, of humility, of unconditional kindness- every characteristic of this clan has been built by you."
"You're flattering me," Badgerstar laughed, "I've made my mistakes."
"Twilightkit."
"How could I not think about her?" His smile was a little bittersweet, eyes watching his mate as she tipped her head back and laughed at something that Flowershine had said. "I know at the end of the day, there's not a whole lot I could have done to make that day turn out differently but... I still feel that I failed. And now that I'm a father again, I worry that I'll fail them, too."
"Being a parent is... hard," Lionheart said, gently, "and no parent ever deserves to outlive their kits. It's such a hard thing to cope with, and in ways, I think you had it worse than me, because you actually got to know your kits. I didn't think I'd have kits again because I was afraid of a repeat but... look at how it turned out. My kits are strong, and they're healthy. Your kits have Maplefall's sweetness and your curiosity, your passion for life. Nothing is going to happen to them. GroveClan is bigger and stronger now, and those kits are surrounded by so much love. Nothing will happen to them, I promise you this."
"You're going to personally make sure of that, aren't you?" Badgerstar gave her a smile, fond as anything. Lionheart grinned. "I wouldn't be much of a starmother if I didn't," she said, and Badgerstar snorted, nudging her shoulder, "but really. I know it's scary and there's about a million things that could go wrong, but you can't ever move forward if you let the past hold you back. The most important thing now is looking to the future."
"You're right," Badgerstar said, getting to his paws with a grin, "and my future is right there." With that, he surged forward into the fray, scooping the mossball from between Mottlekit's paws and lobbing it to her sister with a deft flick of his paw. Pitchkit let out a whooping laugh as Mottlekit yowled her protest. "Yeah! Dad's on our team!" He crowed, racing forward with Crowkit as Pebblekit flicked the ball toward Starlingkit, who in turn neatly batted it across to Fernkit. "No fair!" Mottlekit complained, trying to swipe the ball from Fernkit, who simply batted it upwards, and smacked it across the camp toward Pitchkit.
"Mom!" Cherrykit called, trying to intercept the moss wad as Pitchkit and Crowkit passed it between them. Lionheart was laughing hard as she pulled herself to her paws, racing forward to join the cacophony of delighted squeals that rose up from the camp, and made the sun smile even brighter on GroveClan.

"You don't have to slow down for me, you know," Spidernose grinned as Goldleaf huffed and rolled her eyes, "my leg's a little twisted, but it doesn't give me that much trouble... not usually at least."
"I don't mind meandering," Goldleaf said with a shrug, "Mousestone's in camp if anything goes sideways, and it's a nice day." After a pause, she flicked her gaze to Spidernose's leg, head cocked a bit. "If you don't mind me asking... how'd it end up like that?"
"I was born with it," Spidernose shrugged, somewhat jankily, "that was pretty much it, honestly. I was born with a twisted leg and it was decided I was going to be a medicine cat, and for a long time, I thought that was just how it was... until I came here. I couldn't believe that this clan had a blind warrior, and a deaf one. I guess it never occurred to me that I could be anything other than a medicine cat, you know?"
"I get it," Goldleaf nodded, carefully, "would you... change it? If you could." Spidernose shook his head, lightly. "No. I love being a medicine cat. Maybe I would have liked the option to choose my fate, but... at the end of the day, I love this work. It's hard, and it's a lot of pressure, and in my own clan it was... lonely but I love it. And I hope it can be different, here."
"It can be," she said with a firm nod, "GroveClan has always been a clan of second chances. I think, for the most part, you have Badgerstar to thank for that. He says StarClan entrusted this clan to him because of the fighting and misery in others, and Badgerstar has done his best to make sure that this clan is happy, and that everyone here feels safe and respected. He's made some calls that would be... controversial, perhaps, among the other leaders, but he has a good heart and a sure head, and that's what makes GroveClan the clan that it is."
"You've got a high opinion of him," Spidernose said with a laugh, "I suppose that means he really has earned it. You don't strike me as the kind of molly who gives praise where it isn't due." Goldleaf quirked a smile, shaking her head a little. "No, I suppose you're right. But... Spidernose, I hope you know. If I've been tough on you, it's because this clan means a lot to me, and I need to know that I can trust you."
"I know," Spidernose nodded, "it's really obvious how much you love everyone in this clan, and I understand that I overstepped a little. We're both used to being in charge, and we're both experienced medicine cats, and I suppose neither of us were used to having someone challenge that authority. I definitely think we got off on the wrong paw, but I really respect you and I think you're an incredible medicine cat. I'm glad we're getting this chance to talk because... well, I'd really like to be friends. And I hope one day you'll trust me enough to work as your equal."
"I already do," Goldleaf smiled, "you've been beyond helpful while Mousestone has been gone, and I can see how quickly you've adapted to the clan. Everyone seems to like you, and trust you, and without you around... Maplefall probably wouldn't have survived that kitting. I'm grateful for everything you've done, and I'm looking forward to working with you, for the rest of the foreseeable future." Spidernose brightened, ducking his head bashfully.
"Thank you," he said, "it means a lot, coming from you. I uh, if we're.... friends now. I have a question. Badgerstar seems lax on... romantic relationships and I was. Wondering- would he uh, would he be... opposed to two medicine cats having... mates?" Goldleaf's grin grew broader. "This is about Sootface, isn't it?"
"No!" Spidernose winced. "Okay, yes. I don't know why I lied. These past few moons he's just been... steady. He's kind and he went out of his way to make me feel at home. And he's very handsome." Goldleaf laughed, nodding her head slowly. "Objectively, he does have very nice eyes. But... I wouldn't worry too much about what Badgerstar will think. He's not one to stand in the way of someone's relationship."
"It's such a strange concept to me," he said with a laugh, "it never could have happened in my old clan."
"Anything's possible here."
"If you don't mind me asking... why didn't you take a mate?" Goldleaf paused, giving Spidernose a little smile. "It's not anything like I suppose you're thinking," she said, "look, I like mollies and that's all well and good, but I've never really... connected with any of them. Not in the kind of way where I could imagine myself being with them forever. In a way, I was grateful for my position in my old clan because it meant I never had to explain it, but... being here is better."
"I see," Spidernose said with a nod, "I think I might take your share of the romance then, if that's okay with you." Goldleaf let out a bark of laughter, shaking her head. "Fine with me. Now come on, let's get back to work."

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"All cats gather beneath Highbranch!" In the morning light, Badgerstar's call dragged cats from their dens, those already awake and receiving patrol assignments from Longriver clustering in quickly, clamouring for the best seats. From the nursery, Fallowshimmer helped Redrunner step into the sunlight, while Woodbloom, Jayfur and their daughters exited from the elder's den. Woodbloom pressed close to her mate, twining her tail around his with a bright purr.
"We've got a lot to get through, so I'll try to be as quick as possible," Badgerstar mewed, a twinkle in his eye, "six moons ago, Woodbloom and Jayfur proved there's something in the water over in HazeClan when they gave GroveClan six very lovely mollies." A ripple of laughter went around the clan, and Jayfur ducked his head bashfully as Squirrelwhisker nudged his shoulder with a light snicker. "Now, it's time for those wonderful young she-cats to become apprentices. Dahliakit, Willowkit, Sparrowkit, Twigkit, Wrenkit and Finchkit; from this day on until you receive your full warrior names, you will be known as Dahliapaw, Willowpaw, Sparrowpaw, Twigpaw, Wrenpaw and Finchpaw respectively, to symbolise the path that StarClan will guide you down." Badgerstar took a deep breath, grinning.
"Dahliapaw, you will be mentored by Roseclaw. He is an experienced warrior of this clan, who is strong and kind, and I have no doubt that he will pass on his knowledge to you to make you the best warrior you can be. Willowpaw, you will be mentored by Willowthroat; an optimistic and keenly intelligent tom who I trust to train you as an upstanding member of the clan. Sparrowpaw, your mentor will be Burningcloud, who is astute and level-headed. He will make a fantastic mentor for you, and I trust him to impart wisdom upon you to help you grow into your best self. Twigpaw, for you your mentor shall be Shadowtail- no one in this clan could doubt her ability as a mentor, and her kindness and vivacity will surely be passed on to you. Wrenpaw, for your mentor I have chosen Kererucall. Though she is new to the clan, she has shown herself to be kind, and she has overcome insurmountable odds. I am sure her determination and her calm demeanour will prove invaluable in teaching you the ways of the warrior code. And finally, Finchpaw-"
"Stop for a breath!" The molly called, making Badgerstar laugh, and inhale deeply. "Your mentor is young, but she has already shown herself to be brave and thoughtful. Novella will teach you well, and I hope you enjoy working together. Let's hear it for our newest apprentices!" A cacophony of shouts rose around the camp, crying out for the newest apprentices as they all stepped forward to touch noses with their mentors.
"Out of breath there, old man?" Maplefall called from underneath the tree, looking amused. Badgerstar let out a wheezing laugh, and gave a nod. "Yeah," he said with a laugh, "Finchpaw was right- I should take more breaks."

"So, a whole bunch of interesting things happened while I was gone and everyone's acting like it's not such a big deal," Mousestone bounced alongside Goldleaf, grinning at her. The cream molly purred, shaking her head at her apprentice. "You know that if you want gossip, I'm not the cat to come to, right? Don't you have Dusklight for that?"
"Dusklight thinks Lionheart having kits is just an everyday occurrence, and no one will tell me anything about all the wistful looks Spidernose is sending Sootface, and how Halfpond manages to look so angst-ridden every time he even glances in Dawnblossom's direction, or why Thunderspark and Juniperstorm are in the medicine den looking thick as thieves, or why Frostbranch and Sparkfur sit very close when they're eating now-"
"Okay, okay," Goldleaf groaned, "how much detail are you expecting here."
"The most detail, obviously." Goldleaf rolled her eyes, blowing out a sigh. "Lionheart's kitting went smoothly. You saw how Ashenstrike flitted around her and made sure she was okay. He insisted on being there while she was kitting and bracing her, which I think made her calm, and overall she did really well. Cherrykit and Fernkit are both strong, as you can see, and they seem to get along well with Maplefall and Badgerstar's lot. Spidernose likes Sootface because he's been making sure Spidernose adjusts to his new clan by sharing his experiences as a perceived outsider, and I don't think it takes a genius to guess that Sootface likes him back, in probably more than a friendly way-"
"Oh, definitely. I overheard him talking to Ashenstrike about it and gushing about Spidernose's eyes." Goldleaf squinted at her apprentice. "Do you want me to finish or not?"
"Sorry, go ahead. Continue." Goldleaf rolled her eyes again. "I assume Halfpond's still in love with Dawnblossom but since Dawnblossom has an apprentice she's a little busy now and she tends to spend more time with her brother and Sedgefire, who is spending a lot of time with Wolverinejaw who spends a lot of time with the other two because they're all training apprentices together. I assume he's lamenting how they could have been having a family right now if he'd made a move, and yet... well. You get the point. Flintburr came across a group of dogs on patrol, Thunderspark and Juniperstorm were lucky to escape with no injuries, but to limit the chances of a shock or post-traumatic stress syndrome developing I've had them on rest, and I suspect there were already some lingering feelings from kit-hood between them. As for Frostbranch and Sparkfur.... that one I'm sure you can figure out on your own."
"And you say you're not a gossip," Mousestone laughed, shaking out her fur as Goldleaf deftly flicked lake water at her. "And what about you, how have you been? I know you're not immune to the disease of feelings."
"Hilarious," Goldleaf said dryly, "I've been alright. I missed having you around, but it was a good opportunity to see what Spidernose can do. He's competent, and we worked well together once he got past the initial hurdle of not being top cat anymore. I'm optimistic about how the three of us will interact, as a team and I'm glad to have you back. You know you're like a daughter to me, and I was worried for you."
"I know," Mousestone touched her nose to Goldleaf's cheek, "it seems like everyone was, and I was scared for myself too. But I'm back now, and I'm safe, and StarClan willing I won't have to do anything like that for a long time now. Plenty of time to hang out with my friends, and my brother...."
"Yes, you can have however much time you need to spend with Harrierstreak," Goldleaf said, amused. Mousestone lit up. "Thank you! Of course I want to spend time with you and Spidernose too, but I reckon I still have a fair amount of time to do that. Like... oh... I don't know, forever." Goldleaf let out a laugh that ran out across the lake, echoing around their basin.
"I don't know about forever," she said, "but certainly for a long time yet."

"Don't you miss patrol?" Juniperstorm asked, laying on her back and tilting her head over the edge of the nest to look at Thunderspark. The grey and white molly blinked, and then shrugged a little. "I suppose. It's a little frustrating, feeling like I'm under observation all of the time, but... I understand. And besides, I like spending time here, with you." Juniperstorm ducked her head, shyly. "I know you're worried for your brother. It's okay to be."
"I know... I just. I know he worries, after Twilightkit and everything. You know, I was talking with Pinefeather the other day, and he was telling me that two-legs have these things called 'twins', when two of their kits look exactly alike, and Pinefeather says the two-legs believe that twins can read each other's minds and that they have a special bond. I feel like Midnightstream and Twilightkit were like that- twins."
"They certainly looked the part," Thunderspark's eyes were sad, all of a sudden, "you know... none of us really talk about it, but we miss her. We don't bring it up because we know you saw her... die... but she was our friend. And I understand why he misses her. Even now, sometimes Elkbounce says something funny or the sunlight catches just right on the leaves of a tree and I think Twilightkit would have liked it, and it feels empty that she's not there."
"Sometimes I feel bad because I think that maybe I don't miss her as much as I should do," Juniperstorm ducked her head, "Midnightstream is clearly distraught. He threw himself into a river for an apprentice from another clan because he's so dedicated to not letting anyone else get hurt. And it was... horrible, traumatic, for me but... I think she's safe now, in StarClan, and that comforts me. Mostly I just want to move on with my life, and not feel guilty. I think she would have liked that, you know, but at the same time, I feel like I can't tell anyone because they'll think I'm a bad soul."
"Everyone grieves differently," Thunderspark said, "and everyone takes their own time to grieve. Midnightstream feels very deeply and has strong emotional responses to things, just like your father. You're compassionate, but ultimately pragmatic, like my father. Neither of those things makes you inherently a good cat or a bad cat. I think Twilightkit would be touched that her brother still feels so deeply moved by her death, but I also think she would be happy for you, that you're happy. I don't think you should have to be sad about her for the rest of your life." She paused, and then, almost shyly, she asked. "Why... why did you tell me?"
"Because I trust you," Juniperstorm's response was automatic, almost without thinking, "beyond a shadow of a doubt. You've always been there for me, from when we were kits to now. I know... I know if anything is wrong, if I ever need anything, you'll be there."
"Of course I will," Thunderspark said, eyes fond, "I care about you. A lot."
"Yeah," Juniperstorm said with a small smile, "me too. About- about you, I mean." She shook her head as Thunderspark laughed. "I'm not very good at this whole... emotions thing, I suppose, but... thanks for talking to me about this."
"You're welcome. And Juniperstorm? Don't worry too much, okay? Midnightstream's got a support system. He's going to be fine."

"Midnightstream, you're doing a poor job of substituting for Thunderspark," the tom jolted, swinging his head toward his friend as she shot him a crooked grin, "my sister is much less of a worry-wart you know. Logical doesn't mean frazzled!" Midnightstream rolled his eyes, bumping shoulders with Elkbounce as she let out a laugh. Effortlessly, she bounded forward to catch up to her parents.
"Tell us more about EchoClan," Mistcreek was saying, tail raised high, "what's it like being up so high in the mountains?" Stonepatch smiled, as Fawnrunner pushed ahead to continue scouting the area. "Well... it's high up, and quite chilly, even in Greenleaf. Nice views, but the rocks hurt your feet, and Mousestone was very strict about it. She says some diseases can be transmitted through fluid, so if we cut our paws we weren't allowed to come into the camp, we had to wait outside until Mousestone could administer a poultice and cover the cuts to make sure we didn't get infected."
"It sounds dangerous," Elkbounce announced, "pretty risky move, but it's cool that you did it."
"Well, Mousestone asked me to. You know, before you rascals came along, she was a bit like a daughter to me. I taught her how to fight, when Goldleaf wanted her to learn how to hold her own." Mistcreek let out a tinkling laugh, with a nod. "We know, Dad. You've told us many times. I'm sure she was lucky to have you, though- she's such a nice molly, you must have done a good job."
"I think he did a good job on some other kits I know, too," Fawnrunner said, smiling back at her children. Deerstripe nudged Midnightstream's shoulder, jolting him back to reality. His friend's gaze was sympathetic, as he cocked his head to the side. "Thinking about your sister again?"
"Yeah," he blew out a sigh, "sorry." Deerstripe shrugged. "Don't feel like you have to apologize to me," he mewed, "I get it." Midnightstream nodded, gesturing to his family as they traipsed ahead of them. "Do you ever worry about them? I don't get how you couldn't. You're not worried that anything could happen, at any moment, and you wouldn't be there to say goodbye? Or to stop it from happening?" Deerstripe's smile was still gentle. Even when they were kits, Deerstripe had been quiet, contemplative. Midnightstream had always liked him, had always found him to be good company. They were similar in temperament, and had found a special solidarity growing up among so many girls.
"Of course I do," he said, "they're my family, and I love them, and I know there's so many things that could happen. But I'd render myself catatonic trying to hyper-manage all of them, and at the end of the day, if the will of the universe is that they should go to StarClan, then so be it. In most cases, there won't be much I, or anyone else for that matter, can do to stop anything from happening to them. So... I just try to enjoy the time I have with them, and to be kind, in case it is the last time I see them. I tell them I love them often, and I forgive them when they fight. It's the best I can do, is to love them unconditionally while they're here."
"I guess you're right," Midnightstream gave his friend a small smile, before his ears pricked. The Highgarden border entered sight, and Midnightstream's eyes roamed it keenly, before they settled on a familiar pelt. Somehow, the sight of his friend didn't fill Midnightstream with that delightful feeling of sunshine in his chest. Now, he felt almost queasy, as the patrol passed and vanished from sight. "Everything okay?" Deerstripe asked, looking worried.
"Yeah," Midnightstream said, trying not to think of how awkward things had been with Hornetpaw lately, or how he'd felt that the other tom had been dodging him at any given opportunity, "yeah. Everything's fine." He turned to Deerstripe, giving him his best grin. "Bet you I can catch more fish than you." Deerstripe laughed, holding up a paw and unsheathing his claws. "You're on."

Greenleaf- A kit tumbles out of the nursery, squealing loudly as they tried to escape their littermates. The young one halted, their eyes wide in shock as a few droplets of water splattered on the ground and their back. They tilted their head back, their tiny jaw parted in a silent excited squeal as more droplets started to fall. In the last days of Greenleaf, the rain has started to return and fill up the dry riverbeds. The Twolegs are packing up their odd dens and dogs, slowly leaving the territories in their monsters. Cats and prey are starting to come out of their shelters, bringing the possibilities of new clanmates and more prey to feed them.

(ooc : I have really bad writers block for his post so, I just summarized what happpened)

last moon. kestelstar's patrol catches the scent of a mate-pair of badgers on their territory. cobramask is the one that ends up finding them, she, sorretail and kestrelstar quickly think of a plan of fighting them. on the other hand, poppyflame and seawhisker seem more nervous. having the element of surprise on their side, the five cats charge the pair of badgers. during the fight, kestrelstar gets pinned by the badger. however, a rogue comes by and help get the badger off of him. the now six cats successfully chase off the badgers with only minor scrap and cuts. the rogue introduces himself as falcon and is later named falconclaw. Around this time infection sets in kestrelstar's wounds and he later looses his first life to it.

this moon. mention pansykit + cranekit becoming apprentices. graveclan refugees, ivytonuge, lichenbelly (renamed cedarsmoke) and reedpaw, are found and join the clan. kestrelstar and cobramask observe how many of the cats are cautious of them due there clan's reputation. poppyflames talks about being nervous about having an apprentice. while galesong takes an platonic interest in reedpaw. echoshade and buzzardshadow make small talk, echoshade starts to confess her feelings about him but, hesitant and changes the subject. + have them find out about reedpaw's vision issues.

Larch's Advance

Bramblespirit was nervous. The entire clan was on edge. Today was the day Simon had planned for the clan to drive out the badger, and he had selected her, Birdsong, Sunflower, Wavecall, Night Breeze and himself to go on the dangerous mission. Claws of anxiety sank into her pelt as she thought of the huge beast the patrols had described, and of the clan's inexperience. Everyone had to start somewhere, but a badger fight was a fierce fight to be a part of. Although she had not experienced it yet, the worst thing so far was the waiting.

Although Simon had not much experience with battling other than sparring with clanmates and a few hastily taught battle moves to deal with badgers from the cats around him, the tom carried enthusiasm with him and the faith of the stars, as well as the knowledge that his clan would be safe after the fight. He had told the cats in his patrol to fight when necessary, but their main goal was to get the badger out of the territory.

Although she was excited, that nervousness was still there, and Bramblespirit could sense it in the other members of the patrol as they shared prey in camp before setting off. Night Breeze especially seemed to be questioning Simon's optimism, and while their leader took in their opinions, he too grew more concerned and doubtful. Bramblespirit was determined to be cheerful for the patrol; she had been named -spirit for her energy and enthusiasm, and right now she wanted to show that same enthusiasm, but being her first fight with a badger, she showed wariness. It was natural though; Night Breeze quietly talked with the council as to their strategy, with Simon listening in, while Wavecall purred with Pebblesong over a vole. All of them were in tense sitting positions, with their swishing tails and glances that bounced from cat to cat even though they were among friends.

"A badger!" Cloverpaw wondered, her wide eyes staring at Bramblespirit, making her jump. "They're big and scary! How will you survive?" the apprentice continued to meow. "We'll do it. Driving out a badger can't be that hard, can it? We just have to swipe the big brute on the nose and it will run!" Bramblespirit told her with more confidence than she truly had. Her claws flexed, and she tore at the grass. Cloverpaw seemed satisfied with that answer, but still has doubts. "I've never seen a badger, and I hope I never will. I don't remember there being any in WaveClan," she said, her voice dripping into sadness. "In my old clan, RoseClan, I don't remember there being any badgers. I just hope we can drive it out without wounds." Bramblespirit told her quietly, glancing at her paws. Cloverpaw touched noses with her mentor briefly, a look of understanding passing through the apprentice's eyes. "Good luck! I know you can do it," the apprentice smiled, tail flicking happily as she went off to talk to her brothers. Bramblespirit hoped that she was right.

Simon nodded at the council and began to look at the rest of the patrol, but first padded off to say bye to Evening Star. By now it was clear the two cats held a deep bond, but Bramblespirit was ready to get on with it, but not without goodbyes to her own friends first. Looking around the gathered cats, the tabby spotted Silver Sun, and meowed quickly, "Goodbye Silver Sun," and the she-cat turned to her, warmth shining in her golden eyes, to say, "be careful, Bramblespirit. May the stars guide your paws!" Bramblespirit echoed, responding, "may the stars guide your paws," she gave a small purr, "I will be careful, and thank you." Silver Sun gave her a blink of understanding, worry and sorrow also apparent. Before Bramblespirit could say anything to possibly reassure her friend, Beepaw bounced up behind her.

"You didn't think you would leave without saying bye to me?" she asked teasingly. "Badgers are so stupid, you could probably swat at it and make it run away. I don't know why they feel the need to muscle in on our territory in the first place, instead of somewhere else," Beepaw meowed, her eyes bright. The sight of the apprentice's own carefree attitude made Bramblespirit relax a little more. "You're not an elder, and I'm sure you'll do fine. I wish I could be there as well, but I think Simon knows what he's doing? Go get 'em!" the pale tortoiseshell-and-white apprentice told her, a more serious look entering her eyes. "I'll do this in your place then. I just wish everyone wasn't so tense! This won't be a cheerful patrol, that's for sure," Bramblespirit responded. She hoped her courage would not fail her now.

Beepaw nodded, and opened her mouth to speak again when Simon's yowl caught her attention. "It's time to go!" he told them, standing up with his head raised in confidence. "Tipwhisker will be in charge of the camp while I am gone. Stay safe, Larch's Advance," he told the clan. Bramblespirit couldn't miss the glimmer of worry that glinted in his eyes for a moment. He turned and flicked his tail towards the chosen patrol, ready to set off. Meows of encouragement poured out behind them, and Bramblespirit couldn't help the smile that spread across her face. She would always remember her old clan RoseClan, but to know there was a home here was enough for her.

The patrol began to travel through the forest, and the warmth of the camp faded with every step they took. The trees were looming and shadows played underneath them. There was no denying the strong badger scent, and Simon stopped them a few tail-lengths away from a large gaping hole in the ground.

"Half of us will go into the trees. That will be me, Birdsong and Sunflower. Night Breeze, you, Wavecall and- w-why are you looking at me like that?" Bramblespirit watched in terror as a large beast loomed over their small leader, its terrible jaws contorted in a spine-chilling snarl. "Go!" Birdsong took charge, pushing Simon one way while he and Sunflower went the other. The three cats climbed the trees, and Bramblespirit wondered what they were doing.

Before Bramblespirit could say a thing, a rumbling growl came from the great creature behind them. Her fur stood on end, but she was ready. Her courage did not fail her as the lumbering creature, the badger, took a few shockingly fast steps towards them. "I'll rip you apart!" Bramblespirit snarled, allowing the adrenaline to rush through her in preparation for her next moves. In front of her, Wavecall dashed forward to slash the badger on the nose. Birdsong and Sunflower pounced from the trees like squirrels, landing blows on the badger's back and turning in the air to be able to be at a position to attack the badger's sides.

In response, the large beast shook itself, pushing the cats away before setting it's berry-bright eyes on her. The badger charged and she swiped in response. A glance upwards told her Simon was getting ready to pounce, but there was no time for that as the badger leered closer with large, sharp claws and huge pale jaws, undaunted by the attacks around it. What have we gotten ourselves into?
