“Good, Nightpaw!” Ruststripe purred. Nightpaw landed with the bird he snatched out of the air hanging from his jaws.
He raised an eyebrow at the tabby. “I thought you were supposed to be hidden.” Nightpaw spat out a feather.
“That was a great catch to end on,” Ruststripe continued. “It’s getting late in the evening. We can head back now.”
“Did I pass?” Nightpaw didn’t want to assume anything even though Ruststripe seemed very pleased.
“Of course, you did.” Ruststripe grinned. “I wasn’t worried you would fail anyway.” Nightpaw swished his tail back in forth happily. “I’m proud of you, Nightpaw.” Ruststripe continued. “I’m proud to call you my apprentice.”
Nightpaw’s fur became uncomfortably hot. He wasn’t used to this level of compliments. “Thanks.” He said awkwardly.
Ruststripe laughed. “You can run ahead if you want. I’m sure Flamepaw will want to know how today went.”
This didn’t make Nightpaw less embarrassed but the short run through the forest helped. He was surprised by a new tom sniffing around the camp. Flamepaw, Rushingpaw, and Starlingpaw ambushed him before he could ask Wolfclaw what was going on. “Did you pass?” They all yelled. Nightpaw nodded. “I knew it!” Flamepaw said.
“Lucky.” Starlingpaw said, just a bit bitterly.
“You’ll be taking yours next moon. You both will.” Nightpaw shrugged. “What’s up with the old man?”
“His name is Marsh.” Starlingpaw explained. “You missed him and Morningstar arguing about changing his name.”
“And he talks weird.” Rushingpaw added.
“And he’s not deaf.” Marsh stood behind the group. Wolfclaw did not look happy at their gossiping.
“Sorry,” Rushingpaw’s tail drooped.
“Why don’t you go gather moss for his nest?” Wolfclaw shooed the apprentices away. “How’d you do, Nightpaw?”
“Good,” Nightpaw took this time to take in the new elder. “I passed.”
“Nightpaw took his warrior assessment today.” Wolfclaw explained to Marsh. “Tomorrow he will receive his warrior name.”
“I bet if you ask, you can keep the name ‘Nightpaw’ if you want.” Marsh told Nightpaw.
“I’ve worked hard to not be called Nightpaw.” He shrugged. Wolfclaw nodded at him.
“Well, I’ve lived long enough to be called whatever I want.” Marsh huffed. “And that’ll be Marsh.” Nightpaw excused himself. He wasn’t up to arguing with them; he just wanted to curl up in his nest.

“Nightpaw do you promise to uphold TwistedClan’s traditions and to protect the Clan with your life?” Wolfclaw called from the Ceremony Tree.
“I do.” Nightpaw said.
“Then, I give you your warrior name, Nightpelt. Remember that your Clan is always there for you even in the darkest times.” Wolfclaw rested his muzzle on Nightpelt’s forehead while TwistedClan cheered.
Morningstar congratulated him from her spot at the base of the tree, but her mind was spinning at the words Wolfclaw had used. He said very appropriate words for the possible issues to come.

Cloudpaw ducked under Stormpaw’s paw swiping at her head. Countering his attack, she darted forward throwing her weight into his shoulders, knocking him off balance. She had now thrown him off his rhythm. “Good, Cloudpaw!” Claystream encouraged her apprentice.
“Roll with her and grapple with your back legs.” Blossomfall suggested to Stormpaw. Stormpaw snagged her with his claws and brought them both tumbling to the dirt. His back paws scratched at her belly as she batted his ears.
“Regain control.” Claystream called, but Stormpaw had already heaved Cloudpaw off in a heap and she rolled into a bush. She laid there for a second trying to make the world stop spinning until she heard a soft growling. She spun her head to notice she was facing a salivating fox stepping near her. She shrieked and bolted as the fox lunged at her. The fox grazed her leg drawing a bit of blood, but she escaped to the clearing. The warriors hissed in surprise and sprang into action. Birchwhisker, Claystream, and Blossomfall were the closest to the fox, so they were the first to attack. The fox got a hold of Blossomfall’s neck and pulled her closer. Claystream slashed at the fox’s nose, and Birchwhisker attacked its flank. Toadsplash and Sagefeather attacked from the other side and overwhelmed the fox. It staggered away, lurching back and forth on its feet.
“Should we finish it off?” Toadsplash panted.
“It’s weakened and won’t survive for long. Let’s take care of Blossomfall first.” Wolfclaw looked at the warrior bleeding on the ground. Her eyes were closed, and she was breathing unevenly. “Should we move her?”
“I don’t think we have a choice. She’ll bleed out before Spottednose or Galalight gets here first. Here.” Birchwhisker hoisted Blossomfall up, and Wolfclaw and Claystream helped support her weight. The three slowly moved towards the camp. Sagefeather saw the apprentices were horrified and tried to regain their attention.
“Cloudpaw, did you get cut?” She asked. Toadsplash started to sniff the other apprentices, making sure everyone else was unscathed. Sunchaser and Briarwhisper took off following the trail of blood to track the fox.
“Yes, it got my leg.” Cloudpaw showed the cut. “It stings a bit.”
“Rushingpaw? Can you and Honeypaw take her back as well?” Birchwhisker sent the three back to camp. “Everyone else okay?”
“Everything else looks good.” Sagefeather said. “It’s odd how we didn’t really scent it beforehand.”
“Sunchaser did mention smelling a rotting smell, but we wrote it off as an old piece of prey. It didn’t really smell like a fox.” Toadsplash frowned.
“Is it going to come back?” Maplepaw meekly asked.
“Of course not.” Sagefeather assured. Sunchaser and Briarwhisper returned out of breath.
“It’s dead.” Sunchaser said.
“And smells awful.” Briarwhisper wrinkled her nose. “It must have been sick with a fever or something.”
“Let’s just head back.” Sagefeather cut her off. She didn’t want to frighten the apprentices any more.

Crowtalon was making light chit chat with Rainsong, Mallardwing, and Valleyrunner while Morningstar was in labor. Her groans were echoing from the medicine cat den. “What’s wrong with her?” Patchkit asked her mother.
“Bringing kits into the world hurts.” Rainsong said. “Go play with your sisters; you don’t have to be worried about her.” Patchkit ran off. “He is always worrying about something.” She returned her attention to the group.
“That’s cute he’s so concerned.” Valleyrunner laughed.
“I can’t wait until I have kits.” Mallardwing said.
“They’re great, but I also have not gotten a good night’s sleep without a claw stabbing me somewhere.” Rainsong said.
Crowtalon laughed. “That’s nothing if you have to put up with his snoring every night.” He flicked his tail on Valleyrunner’s side.
“Hm,” Rainsong grunted. “I’m sure kits are exactly like snoring.”
“It’s not like we’ve had some of our own.” Crowtalon said.
“Don’t start an argument now.” Valleyrunner shot him a look. “I deal better with your debates with a full stomach.”
“I was just saying that kits aren’t the only thing that keeps cats awake at night.” Crowtalon said. “I’m not saying that to discredit you or anything…”
“I could have your kits.” Mallardwing interrupted. The three stopped in midsentence and stared at her. “What? It’s not like I have my own mate yet or anything. And if you guys want some, then it’s a win-win for all of us.”
“We’d have to think about it.” Valleyrunner said slowly. “But we’ll definitely consider it.” Crowtalon nodded. They were all quiet for a moment, allowing them all to immediately notice something wrong. It wasn’t just them that grew silent in the natural lull of conversation, but the entire forest seemed to sense something was wrong. The unnatural silence was broken by Birchwhisker, Wolfclaw, and Claystream carrying Blossomfall. Rainsong knew something was not right and hurried to herd her kits away from witnessing the chaos.
“Get Spottednose!” Wolfclaw ordered. Mallardwing and Crowtalon both jumped to their feet, now smelling the stench of blood. However, Spottednose had heard his name yelled and poked his head out briefly to assess the situation.
“Stay with Morningstar.” He ordered Galalight on his way to grab a mouthful of herbs. He sprinted to where the warriors set Blossomfall down. Her eyes were shut, and her breath rattled in and out heavily. Her throat was torn open and blood bubbled out with each breath, dying the grass red. Spottednose pressed his paws lightly to her gash but didn’t reach for any of the herbs he grabbed.
“Do you need me to do anything?” Claystream crouched by the herbs he brought.
“No,” Spottednose rested his head above Blossomfall’s face. “It’s too late for her.” He held his head above her muzzle until her breath stopped moving his whiskers. “She’s with StarClan now.”
“A worthy warrior.” Birchwhisker lowered her head. The next group from the training session returned to camp. Rushingpaw and Honeypaw were supporting Cloudpaw between them.
“Go wash the blood off.” Spottednose told the warriors. “Cloudpaw, what’s wrong?”
“A fox grazed my leg.” Cloudpaw winced. “It’s stinging.”
Spottednose spun a cobweb around her leg. “We’ll see how this holds up. It should stop bleeding soon.”
“Is she…?” Rushingpaw stood on her tiptoes to look at Blossomfall.
“She’s dead.” Spottednose said. “Go to the cabin until we know what is going on.”
“No need.” The last of the training group had arrived. “It’s dead too.” Briarwhisper said. “And we didn’t find a trace of another one.” Thunderpaw, Willowpaw, Goosepaw, Stormpaw, and Maplepaw scurried off to check on their sister. Rainsong beckoned Sunchaser over to her, still shielding the kits from the gore. She licked his face quickly, making sure he was okay.
One last groan was heard throughout the camp. Ruststripe poked his head out of the medicine den happily. “We have kits!” He called. His face fell when he took in the bloody scene in front of him. “What happened?”

So far Greenleaf has a mild, buzzing heat. Its more humid than typical for this time of year, likely due to the especially heavy rainfall early this year. While some cats, especially those with long fur, are disgruntled at the heavy air the humidity does serve to keep dust and ash from terrorizing cats' lungs and the extra reservoirs of water will be welcome as the hotter part of the season approaches. So far heatstroke has not been an issue but as Greenleaf continues to heat up cats are advised to limit their activity lest they overexert themselves.

► Oíche is aware enough now to maintain a train of thought and react appropriately to questions the medicine cats pose to him. He is also aware enough to express frustration at the unintelligible strings of words that leave his mouth instead of sentences, once he realizes he isn't speaking clearly that is. Though the medicine cats, ironically, don't have the name for it, Oíche is suffering from a form of aphasia.

Nightwing, Centaurytuft, Grousewhisker, Brackenpaw
Nightwing blinked. There was something amiss here on the shoreline. No- not amiss... Something was missing, but also at the same time, something new was there.

"Is something wrong?"

Grousewhisker's question jolted the former AdderClan warrior into reality. The black she-cat blinked again and turned to the new warrior, meowing, "Yes. The shoreline's changed, somehow." The way she'd uttered what happened - it was with finality. Nightwing turned to Brackenpaw and meowed, swallowing, "Go and tell the medicine cats what happened here. We'll be following you soon." The brown tabby she-cat nodded and ran back toward the Sea Path, her small paws spraying sand everywhere in her wake. Turning back to her patrol, Nightwing mewed quietly, "This patrol is over. We'll need to report to Leafstar." Centaurytuft meowed, curious, "I wonder what happened there?" "I just hope it's not a sign from StarClan," Nightwing replied heavily, leading the patrol of three back to camp.

<At the Pine Grove>
Brimflower, Goldenmist, Lobeliaclaw, Buntingpaw
Brimflower signaled for her patrol to stop. The fawn calico LaPerm she-cat meowed firmly, feeling wet, squelchy earth beneath her paws, "We can't go on. Any further seems flooded." Goldenmist nodded, nose on the ground, "The melting snows, coupled with the rains, must have flooded the grove." Frustration showed in Brimflower's eyes as she meowed, "This is where we found the most prey..." Lobeliaclaw, one of the newest additions to the Clan, meowed quietly, "Still, I think safety should be the most important thing here." Brimflower nodded and meowed, "All right." Turning to Buntingpaw, the fawn calico warrior ordered, "Buntingpaw, we're going to head back to camp, but you should hurry on ahead and inform Leafstar what had happened here first." The cream tabby tom nodded and rushed toward the SeaClan camp, leaving the three she-cats to stare ahead of them, toward the flooded section of the Pine Grove. After a moment, Goldenmist suggested, "There's not much we can do for now. Let's go back." Brimflower and Lobeliaclaw agreed, and the patrol turned on their heels and headed back toward camp.

<At the SeaClan camp>
Leafstar
Leafstar was meowing to Honeytuft, "So you are saying that Breezewhisker and Lavenderpaw are in critical condition." The honey-colored tabby tom nodded tiredly, his long whiskers drooping in sorrow, "I'm afraid so. They are at StarClan's mercy now." Sighing, the cream tabby tom meowed, "We can only hope and pray." Turning around at the sound of clawed paws against cold stone, both leader and medicine cat of SeaClan found themselves surrounded by the rest of the medicine cats and three apprentices.

Dappledawn began, "Sorry Leafstar, Honeytuft. But Brackenpaw here has some news to tell you." Buntingpaw piped up, "I do too!" Leafstar glanced at the two apprentices before nodding. Brackenpaw began, "Nightwing, Centaurytuft, Grousewhisker, and I were on the morning patrol, and uhh, we found this area of the shore that was littered with rock." Sandripple added, "I've checked the place myself, after sending the rest of the patrol back to the warriors' chamber, and..." Comfreypaw finished for the former RidgeClan medicine cat, "...and the cliff right above is gone, just like that!" Alarm flashed in Leafstar and Honeytuft's eyes as the former turned to his head medicine cat. He meowed, "Honeytuft, has StarClan told you of anything lately?" Honeytuft's eyes seemed troubled as he replied, shaking his head, "No, not at all." The honey-colored tabby tom promised, "I'll ask tonight."

Leafstar thanked Brackenpaw and Honeytuft, then turned to Buntingpaw and asked, "What is the news?" The young cream tabby apprentice replied, "Brimflower, Goldenmist, Lobeliaclaw, and I were in the Pine Grove, and we found a stretch of it flooded, Leafstar." The SeaClan leader looked worried as he meowed, "Thank you for telling me of this serious matter. I will gather my senior warriors tonight to discuss this." He then dismissed everyone.

What are you trying to tell me, StarClan? the SeaClan leader asked silently, his gaze traveling to the ceiling of his chamber.

"Breezewhisker!"

Dappledawn's eyes flew open at this shrill shout. The calico she-cat forced herself to fully awaken as she tried to assess the situation. Sitting up in her nest, the first thing she could smell was the scent of sickness. 'Of course,' she told herself silently, 'some are sick with greencough.' But someone had shouted Breezewhisker's name - what had happened?

Dappledawn made her way to where the patients lay, and realized what had happened. Her throat seemed to tighten with sorrow as she gazed at the lifeless body of the calico warrior, surrounded by the tearstained faces of her fellow medicine cats. Hoping it was just a horrible nightmare, the SeaClan medicine cat forced her paws to carry her to where Honeytuft stood, eyes closed and head bowed. Her former mentor meowed hoarsely, "Dappledawn, please inform Morningflame what happened, and bring him here please." Nodding heavily, Dappledawn turned on her heels and limped out of the chamber. Her twisted paw began to throb again.

This is real, she realized. Breezewhisker has gone to join StarClan.

Morningflame
The ginger tabby tom woke with a start, face glistening with sweat. He had been worried sick about his sister for the past moon, and he just had a very bad feeling about it. The former MistClan warrior slowly rose to his paws, intending to go check up on Breezewhisker, his sister.

That was, until a calico she-cat stepped into the warriors' chamber.

Morningflame's heart seemed to skip a beat as he recognized the distinctive coat of Dappledawn.

"Dappledawn?"

Dappledawn swallowed hard. Her face was streaked with tears.

Oh please, StarClan, no!

Morningflame asked again quietly, his mew cracking, "Dappledawn?"

The calico medicine cat nodded heavily and meowed, "I- I'm sorry, Morningflame. She hunts with StarClan now." She swallowed again and indicated for the ginger tabby tom to follow her.

Morningflame felt numb, inside and out. He couldn't believe his ears. 'My sister, dead?' He echoed silently, 'please tell me this is a horrible nightmare. Please wake me up, StarClan.'

<Back at the medicine cat's den>
Medicine cats, Morningflame
Morningflame took hesitant steps into the chamber that housed the medicine cats' den. He'd taken deep breaths before entering. He'd promised himself he wouldn't break down. He promised himself he'd send her off like a true tomcat...

"Breezewhisker!" (Oh who am I kidding, the ginger tabby tom cried silently, a howl of grief escaping his throat.)

Honeytuft, Dappledawn, Sandripple, and Comfreypaw's heads were bowed in sorrow. In resignation. One part of him wanted to accuse them of not helping her at all, but he knew that was preposterous. They had done nothing wrong. Breezewhisker was simply too sick to recover, and StarClan wanted her to join their ranks before he did.

It didn't make him feel any better though.

Raw grief tore through the devastated ginger tabby tom's body as he shook with grief. Again, he roared into the air his beloved sister's name:

"Breezewhisker!"

After what seemed like ages, Honeytuft meowed softly, "Morningflame, we must prepare her for burial." The ginger tabby tom looked up at the head medicine cat.

Again, one side of him wanted to accuse them. He wanted to hold onto her. But again, he knew that was stupid. Breezewhisker had been a fully-respected and beloved member of the Clan, and she deserved a good funeral.

Another shudder went through Morningflame's body as he nodded shakily. He needed to let her go. He buried his nose into his sister's cold body for the last time, clinging onto her scent, and reluctantly backed up. Standing up, the ginger tabby tom mewed quietly, "I will help carry her." The medicine cats didn't argue. As it were, Clan tradition was for the elders to carry the dead to their final resting place, atop a cliff overlooking the sea, but as SeaClan had no elders, it was up to the senior warriors to do so.

Morningflame mewed lightly, "Stormbreeze and Shorefall would be delighted to know their work will be less." No one dared laugh or smile, but the atmosphere became less heavier at the remark.

<Later, in camp>
Leafstar
The camp was quiet. Too quiet. The cream tabby tom saw his Clanmates huddled in small groups, discussing things under their breaths. He knew Breezewhisker's death hit everyone hard, especially her brother Morningflame and her former apprentice, Winterflame. Spotting the two cats crouched together, the SeaClan leader padded toward them.

Approaching them carefully, Leafstar asked, "Are you all right?" Morningflame lifted his head up a little sharply at his question, neck stiff with alarm; however, on seeing who it was, the ginger tabby tom relaxed somewhat. The SeaClan warrior nodded shakily, mewing, "I am, now. I know Breezewhisker wouldn't want me grieving for her indefinitely." Winterflame meowed softly, "I... I'll be okay." Leafstar mewed quietly, "I must begin her funeral now, if that is okay with you two?" Winterflame nodded slowly and turned to Morningflame questioningly. Breezewhisker's brother swallowed and nodded in approval. Leafstar offered words of condolence to the grieving tom before making his way to the Meeting Ledge. He leapt up to his spot and called,

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey meet here, beneath the Meeting Ledge, for a Clan meeting!"

The cats of SeaClan were already in the main camp, though they shuffled closer to the Meeting Ledge, keeping a respective distance from Morningflame. Winterflame had moved to sit next to her siblings, giving the bereaved tom some room. All eyes were on the medicine cats as they bore the body of Breezewhisker to the front of the crowd. Her fur had been groomed carefully, lavender woven through it to hide the scent of death. The calico's eyes were closed, almost as if she were merely asleep. Honeytuft gave a signal, at which his fellow medicine cats laid the warrior down gently onto the floor.

Taking a deep breath, Leafstar announced, "With heavy heart I must announce to you the passing of Breezewhisker. She was taken from us early this morning, before sunrise. Greencough was her cause of death." Heavy silence greeted the cream tabby tom as the Clan silently grieved for the pretty calico. "It is always hard to witness the death of any cat, but it is especially hard to see such a young cat die before their time." Swallowing, Leafstar concluded, "We shall conduct the Ceremony of Remembrance." He stood up, leapt down from the Meeting Ledge, and stoos by Breezewhisker's body. He gently lay his nose on the calico's cold shoulder for a moment before meowing solemnly, "Breezewhisker was a bright, young warrior who only wanted the best for her Clanmates. May StarClan receive her well."

And so, the Remembrance began. Cats filed past Breezewhisker's body for the last time, sharing tongues with her for the last time. When it came to Winterflame's turn, the pure white she-cat meowed loudly, "Breezewhisker looked out for me whenever we went on patrols, and got down to my level when it came to training. She understood what I wanted for myself, and for that, I'm extremely grateful. For me, she wasn't just my mentor. She was also my best friend." Tears flowed down the young warrior's cheeks as she was led away gently by her adopted mother, Rippleheart, as Morningflame took his stand by his fallen sister.

The ginger tabby tom began, "When we fled from our previous Clan, MistClan, we had no one to trust, no one to turn to, other than each other. She was sick back then too, and that's what got us separated from the rest of the Clan. Sickness spread through the camp before a flood devastated it completely. I had to shepherd Breezewhisker away from the water myself because the medicine cats had already fled with the healthier patients." He swallowed before continuing, "They apparently thought Breezewhisker was too sick for them to herd to safett, but I didn't give up on her. I nursed her back to health, doing whatever I could to keep her from the waters. When they receded, she was healthy enough to journey far, and so, we left that land." Morningflame let his tears flow onto his sister's fur as he concluded, "It took us moons to discover SeaClan, and here we stayed since. I'm extremely grateful that we met you, and you allowed us to stay. Breezewhisker would never have gotten the respect she deserved back at our old Clan." The ginger tabby tom then lay down next to his dead sister and buried his nose into her stone-cold flank.

Knowing the Ceremony of Remembrance had ended, Leafstat meowed, leaping back onto the Meeting Ledge, "We will hold a vigil for Breezewhisker tonight. Anyone who wishes to partake in this, please let me know." With that, the cream tabby tom dismissed the Clan, and leapt down from the ledge.

The muffled sounds of pawsteps filled the camp, and Willowstar watched from afar as the newest cat in the clan, Silverstep, paced around in circles anxiously. He certainly was an interesting tom, but something seemed quite... odd about it. Even with Willowstar's piercing stare, Silverstep didn't seem bothered by anything else but his duties and a few other things Willowstar couldn't quite understand. Willowstar had barely noticed that another clan member had been padding silently towards her, and it almost caught her off guard when Petalsong's gleaming tricolour coat. Willowstar flicked her tail, but allowed Petalsong to talk.

"It appears you've noticed something off about Silverstep, no?" Petalsong mused softly, and Willowstar grumbled, but nodded gently. "Ah, I'm glad to not be the only one that has noticed. Why don't you take him and someone else on a hunt? You get to see his skill at hunting and question him, if you like." Petalsong suggested quietly.

"Not too bad of an idea, coming from you." Willowstar uttered.

It's newleaf, and the snow is finally melting! Prey will be more plentiful, kittings will run smoother, and you'll have a higher chance of finding cats on patrol. However, the chance of flooding - especially in low territories or territories near water - is significantly higher.
