To be honest... The Chinese buffet I grew up in. My family didn't own it, but we went there a lot because we were really poor, my mom worked to much to shop regularly and her husband was too lazy to go, so a lot of the time we'd find somewhere cheap and eat there. You can get a lot of bang for your buck at a Chinese buffet, and I've been to many, enough to be able to tell just how good it'll be just by looking though I think part of that comes from being Cantonese myself. Anyways, so it was painted a dark, dull green and had an LED sign on the front that never worked. It was really unassuming from the outside. The inside had a small tv mounted to one of the corners near the door above a booth and it was situated against a window. That was the only time I ever got to watch Sharkboy and Lava Girl. There was kids' chopsticks on the front counter where you'd walk up and have someone seat you, and it had these really pretty ink wash paintings from the 1800s with birds and landscapes.
In the other half of the restaurant there were these booths and a half-wall with a glass partition. The glass was clearly decorative, and it depicted cranes and lotuses. Aside from that there wasn't much decor, it was wide and felt kind of empty aside from where you'd get your food. Wait staff wasn't always rude, but definitely short and barely spoke English, and it was owned by a family and so when I was little, I'd always see a couple kids sitting at tables doing homework. The food was DIVINE, I've never been anywhere that delicious ever again. The orange chicken was so good, always warm and fresh and delicious. The potstickers were perfectly golden brown and crunchy, but soft and steamy. The soy sauce was Kikkoman and the bottles were obviously really old, I'd have to guess at least 25 years, and for those of you who don't know, soy sauce bottles are refillable. one of the hallmarks of a good Asian restaurant are the age of the bottles, and the older the better.
But one of my favorites was the fish. MY GD THE FISH!!! It was a whole fish, not sure what kind, eyes, fins, tail and all, grilled to this dark brown. The outside was a little crunchy, but the inside was soft and white and juicy. The fried rice was like, actually fried too. You could tell it was just old white rice that had been fried, and that's EXACTLY how you're supposed to make it!! and it had little bits of egg, carrot and peas, too. The beef teriyaki was one of my favorites. It was savory and a little salty but it had a sweet and spicy aftertaste. Smooth and juicy going down. I miss that place so much, I spent more of my life there as a regular than not. I moved away in late 2019, and it closed down temporarily during the pandemic. One day, I went back after everything had opened back up and it was gone. The only thing left was an empty and gutted building with a note typed in somewhat broken english saying "I'm sorry, but we're closed forever now". I felt my heart drop into the deepest pit of my stomach when I saw it.
I would give anything to see my favorite restaurant open again. That place was there for me in the darkest part of my life, and that's not an exaggeration. There were nights I wouldn't be able to eat anything if not for them. I wish I could see the owners and tell them thank you, but I don't know how much they'd understand me because I can only muster up broken Cantonese and they were native Mandarin. But it would be nice to have that fish and fried rice again.
^ Attempting to style their hair!! More power to you pal, best I can do is stupid 80s goth hair. I believe in you, though!! I hope it's fun. You have a super cool profile too, I really like your character :)
> I am so tired but I cannot sleep. Some really rough things have been happening the past couple of days and its made it hard for me to sleep, but I'm hanging in there. My cat has been really clingy lately, which is nice because I could use the company. tbh I'm just trying to relax and pull myself together
v What's a country that you think has really cool or pretty traditional costumes? e.g like hanfu, lederhosen, etc. If you don't know much about folk dress, tell me a country you'd like to visit and why.
