indentCrowcloud took a few pawsteps towards where Raggedstar was angrily gnawing on a rabbit bone. The black medicine cat halted when Raggedstar quickly shot him an angry glance, standing there for several seconds before starting to retreat. Mousepaw, knowing his mentor's wimpish tendencies, was already standing behind him. "No, go." The blind tom ordered, flicking his mentor's chest with his tail. The medicine cat groaned before begrudgingly trudging towards the ginger tom.

indentRaggedstar raised his head once the medicine cat had stopped in front of him. "What do you need now?" Raggedstar grumbled, his claws scratching at the rabbit bone in front of him. The Echoclan leader's gaze kept wavering from the young tom, darting towards Gorsebird who was speaking with a few warriors.

indentThe black medicine cat hesitated. "I've been thinking a lot about this, and I've spoken with Starclan about this as well..." Crowcloud trailed off, trying to stall what he was about to say. He flinched back when Raggedstar snapped at him to speak. "I believe that it would be best if you relinquished your leadership to Gorsebird and gave her your extra lives. Starclan sees as well that you've been struggling and they want what's best for the whole Clan and you."

indentRaggedstar rose to his paws, his brown eyes narrowing in anger as he stalked closer to the medicine cat. "It is not your place to speak with Starclan about taking my leadership from me," The large ginger and white tom snarled, his tail lashing angrily. "I am the leader of Echoclan, Squirrelstar passed it on to me and nobody, not even Starclan, can take that from me." He looked over quickly when he noticed Bumbleflower and Tadpole hurry over to join Gorsebird, who was already speaking with Canalstorm, Goosestrike and Heathpaw. The two warriors spoke quietly with the deputy, who tilted her head as she thought before nodding and confirming whatever they said.

indentWith an infuriated growl, Raggedstar launches himself across the clearing towards the small group. He shoved his shoulder into Canalstorm's side, shoving the smaller she-cat out of his way so he could stand in front of Gorsebird. "All of you, get to your patrols now!" He snapped at the others. The cats did as they were told but lingered in front of the warriors and apprentices den. The Echoclan leader glared after the cats before focusing his anger on the seal-point deputy. "It seems you have forgotten, Gorsebird, that I am the leader of Echoclan!"

indentConfusion flashed across Gorsebird's face. "I-I don't know what you're talking about, Raggedstar," She mewed, her ears pressing back against her head. "They were just asking about what routes their patrols should go on today."

indent"That's a question for them to ask me, not you." He retorted.

indent"B-But that's my job as deputy... I organize the patrols."

indent"And now you're arguing back?!" Raggedstar snarled, lashing his tail. "If you keep up this behavior, I'll be looking for a new deputy." The ginger and white tom threatened. Gorsebird opened her mouth for a second to protest but changed her mind, immediately snapping her jaw closed.

indentRaggedstar turned his back on the she-cat before stalking to the center of the clearing. "As punishment for your deputy's actions," He began, shooting a brief glare at Gorsebird. "All kits, especially those who are six moons old, will be held back from becoming apprentices for the foreseeable future." Without waiting to see his clanmate's reactions, Raggedstar turned and stalked back to his den.

indentthe two echoclan warriors trotted alongside pompeii, who was mewing orders to her fellow groupmates as they stepped onto echoclan's territory. the younger of the warriors shot the older one an anxious look, wondering if what they were doing was really right. as if reading their mind, the older warrior looked at them. "don't look at me like that, echoclan has this coming."

the younger warrior nodded quickly, eager to please the cat they had looked up to since they were a young kit in the nursery. "you're right." they responded, giving the older warrior a curt nod before turning to watch pompeii as she spoke with her groupmates. the young warrior blinked curiously when a pretty ticked tabby she-cat came up to join her. the two she-cats whispered quietly to each other before the ticked tabby turned her head towards the two echoclan warriors.

the older warrior froze next to the younger one, causing the younger warrior to look up with a concerned look. "her eyes..." the older warrior murmured. "they look like squirrelstar's." the younger echoclan cat looked back at the she-cat's shocking blue eyes. they had only been two moons old when the old echoclan leader had passed away so they couldn't remember entirely what the first leader had looked like, but they had vague memories of her brilliant blue gaze. "i know squirrelstar had a whole family still alive out there... it's just strange to see her eyes on someone else."

pompeii and the ticket tabby broke away from the other rogues to join the two echoclan warriors. pompeii introduced the two cats to the pretty she-cat before gesturing towards her with her tail. "and this is firefly," pompeii mewed, brushing her shoulder against the she-cat's. "she's the daughter of my cousin, glass."

Last Moon
Rainsong returned from one of her and Patchedmask’s excursions feeling guilty as usual. It’s not like they had been doing anything explicitly wrong, but she did know their relationship wasn’t allowed either. Morningstar met her at the camp entrance. “Mind patrolling with me?” She asked, and Rainsong followed her right back out. “You’ve been out of camp a lot lately. Enjoying the leaf-fall scenery?”
Rainsong practically froze. “I guess.” She squeaked out. “Just taking more walks than usual.”
“If that’s all you are doing,” Rainsong could hear the edge coming out in the leader’s voice. She just looked at the ground and continued on.

“Who is it?” Morningstar called into the underbrush. A black and white tom stepped out into view. Rainsong bristled at the newcomer.
“Wolfstar of HollowClan.” The new cat responded.
“HollowClan?” Morningstar asked.
“We disbanded.” Wolfstar’s eyes were filled with sorrow. “We moved on. Is this a Clan?”
Morningstar nodded. “This is Rainsong, and I am Morningstar. You are welcome to take refuge in TwistedClan for the time being. But take note that you cannot continue to be Wolfstar.”
“Understood.” Wolfstar came closer. “I can go by Wolfclaw if that is alright.” The calico agreed, and the trio continued the border patrol swapping stories.

Nightpaw stirred from his sunning position when Sunchaser returned from his private vigil. He kept his eyes on the tom as he approached Silverstem and sat down next to her. Is he getting attached to her or still feeling guilty about her son? Nightpaw pondered. Rainsong has seemed to move on, but has Sunchaser? Nightpaw stretched and shook dirt from his sleek black fur. His thoughts were interrupted by his mentor and Blossompaw returning from her climbing session. Her fur was still bushed from climbing up high, but Ruststripe seemed pleased enough with her progress.
“Lucky you got to lounge around all day,” She hissed as she passed the quiet apprentice.
“Lucky you didn’t fall and break a leg.” Nightpaw muttered back. Blossompaw huffed and stalked off.
“Be nice,” Ruststripe cuffed his apprentice’s ear. “She’s had a rough day.”
“I was being nice,” Nightpaw rolled his eyes. “She enjoys snarking.”

Present
Thunderkit was on point in his patrol. He could hear muttering behind him, and he turned and shushed the rest of his warriors.
“I am being quiet!” Stormkit protested.
“Not anymore.” Willowkit shoved her brother. They started to tussle in the dirt.
“We should go back to Birchwhisker.” Maplekit whined.
“No!” Thunderkit stopped her from turning back around. “We are almost outside of the camp’s boundaries. Just come a little further.” He pressed.
Cloudkit shoved Maplekit and Goosekit forward, and the four kits left their fighting siblings behind to step into the rustling forest. Thunderkit was lost now. He had thought Birchwhisker would have turned back to the group at the last second. He didn’t know what to do now.
“Well, come on!” Cloudkit ran forward.
“Wait up!” Maplekit called, scared she would get left behind. Thunderkit and Goosekit sprinted to catch up to their sisters.
“Eep!” Maplekit shrieked and cannonballed into Goosekit. The four froze. Two tortoiseshell she-cats were standing nearby a twisted tree. The strangers heard the sound of small kits and tried to spot the source of the noise.
“Get back!” Cloudkit hissed at her siblings. The kits scampered backwards, but the two adults easily found them. One of the tortoiseshells was a lot older than any of the cats back at camp and small scars littered her pelt. The other was younger and gave off a friendlier vibe.
“Do you have a mother somewhere close by?” The older of the two surprised them by softly asking. Maplekit’s eyes squeezed shut, and she nodded vigorously. “Okay, let’s go find her, shall we?”

Briarwhisper did not envy the kits they had returned to their mother in TwistedClan’s camp. She had immediately started scolding and lecturing the four that had actually ventured out of the safety of the camp, and it looked like the remaining two already had listened to their share of the scolding. A few other Clan cats gathered around. Briarwhisper felt slightly uncomfortable with all the staring; it was like she was on display.
“Thank you for bringing back some escapees.” The calico nodded to them. “I am Morningstar of TwistedClan. You are…?”
“Neritefang.” Her companion said. “Formerly of GraveClan but sick of their lifestyle.”
“Briarwhisper of RoseClan. Disbanded.” Briarwhisper introduced. “We met up near the beginning of the forest and decided to walk together.”
“If you would like to stick around for a while, you may. Or move on if you wish.” Morningstar offered.
Neritefang took in her surroundings. The camp seemed peaceful enough for her taste. “I will take you up on that offer.” Briarwhisper seconded. “Only if I remain as a warrior.”
“I don’t see why not.” Morningstar flicked her tail. “Welcome.”

Ruststripe approached Morningstar close to dusk. “Something on your mind?” He asked gently.
“Would you be terribly offended if I appointed Wolfclaw as deputy?” She closed her eyes in thought.
“Not at all. Why would you think that?” Ruststripe said.
“Because you were my first choice for the job.” Morningstar said. “But Wolfclaw has experience leading already and…” She trailed off.
“And?” Ruststripe pushed her to continue.
“I didn’t want it to feel like favoritism if we ever did, you know, have a relationship or anything.” Morningstar looked away from the tom, embarrassed.
Ruststripe purred. “I think Wolfclaw would be a wonderful deputy. And I would much rather be your mate than your deputy.”
“Gross. Don’t be so sentimental.” Morningstar pushed him away. “Go bother some other she-cat.”
“But I just want to bother you,” Ruststripe jabbed back. The two laughed and walked off together.

Rainsong did not feel right. Something felt off and she couldn’t figure out the cause of her discomfort. Eventually, she dragged herself to Spottednose’s den even though she wanted to avoid it. The medicine cat pushed a bundle of berries back into their spot and looked at her expectantly.
“Um, I don’t feel good.” She stammered.
“We’re going to need more than that.” Spottednose sniffed. He gestured to Galapaw who took the hint and started inspecting her. After a few sharp prods, Galapaw returned to her mentor to murmur something.
“Can’t you tell me what you found?” Rainsong asked worriedly. She didn’t even feel like the apprentice had the opportunity to find any ailment in the first place.
“Calm down.” Now Spottednose approached her. He also checked her out, finishing with pressing on her belly in multiple areas. “Is this slightly uncomfortable?”
“Y-yeah.” Rainsong shuffled away from his touch. “Not much but different.”
“Congratulations.” Spottednose said. “You better go tell Sunchaser the good news.”
Her heart sank. “Good news?” She didn’t want to hear the response but asked anyway.
“You’re expecting kits, of course.” He turned to Galapaw. “Well done.”
Rainsong ducked outside before he could ask any more questions. She couldn’t be expecting kits! This was definitely against all the rules because they were not Sunchaser’s like everyone would assume. She suddenly ran into a wall of fur.
“Hey, are you okay?” Birchwhisker righted the frazzled she-cat. “I’m taking a walk while Silverstem watches the kits. Do you want to join me?” Rainsong nodded, following the older queen outside of camp. “So, what did scary old Spottednose tell you today?”
Rainsong debated on telling the truth. “I-I’m going to have kits.” She decided someone else needed to know.
“Oh, that’s wonderful! I’m glad you and Sunchaser are getting along now.” Birchwhisker rested her tail on the younger’s shoulder. “I know it seems daunting, but we will all help you two along.”
“Thank you.” Rainsong’s voice came out unnaturally high. She stayed silent for the rest of their walk.

Neritefang was catching the last few sun rays before the leaf-bare weather took over and sent mounds of snow to the forest. She was adjusting to TwistedClan very well as Clan life had returned to a normal routine once more. She was content attending to hunting and patrolling her new borders and coming back to watch the bustle of cats and kits. She especially found herself fond of the six kits that initially brought her and Briarwhisper to TwistedClan. Birchwhisker also seemed grateful when the older warrior could entertain them with stories. It was therapeutic to retell some of the stories from GraveClan, but she made sure to leave out the most gruesome details.

Stonefrost padded up to Briarwhisper. “Hey.” He said and startled her.
“Oh, hey.” She laid her fur flat again. “Sorry, I wasn’t expecting someone to speak.”
Stonefrost ducked his head. This was not the good first impression he had hoped for. He considered just leaving but instead stayed awkwardly. “I was just wondering how you were doing. I know that coming into a new clan feels weird for a bit.”
“Alright, I guess.” Briarwhisper shrugged. “I still miss RoseClan.”
“I recently came from CherryClan myself.” Stonefrost said. “But now I really feel like a TwistedClan cat myself.”
“Really? I’m glad someone else came from a different Clan. It seems that Neritefang just blended right in, but I still feel like the odd one out.” Briarwhisper shrugged.
“It’ll get better. I promise.”

Sunchaser and Ruststripe were discussing potential training plans for their apprentices. Nightpaw was definitely behind by starting late and becoming injured. Sunchaser now had to debate whether to give Blossompaw her final assessment or hold her back for at least another moon. She had enough training sessions, but the dog attack also affected her training. By the time they finished speaking, he was ready to have the unpleasant conversation of waiting one more moon. Rainsong intercepted him before he could get to his apprentice, however. He was pleasantly surprised. They hadn’t been talking recently, and he had found that he missed that.
“We need to talk.” She muttered in his ear. Sunchaser followed her after saying goodbye to the other warrior.
“How’ve you been?” He asked. “We haven’t hung out in a while.”
“I’m expecting kits.” She blurted out.
Sunchaser was taken aback. “What?”
“And everyone is assuming they’re yours.”
“Well, they’re not!”
“I know, but…” Rainsong paused. “I don’t know. It would be easier if you went along with it.”
“But they’re not mine!” Sunchaser yelled.
“I know!” Rainsong tried to calm him down. “But please? For me?”
“Why should I?” Sunchaser spat. “You cut me off, and this is the first time you’ve directly spoken to me in moons and it’s just to ask for a favor.”
Rainsong ducked her head in shame. “I’m sorry. You weren’t listening to me, though. But I’m sorry.”
“I wasn’t going to stick around you spouting off conspiracies.” Sunchaser turned to walk back to camp, but Rainsong held him back.
“You don’t have to say anything then.” Rainsong countered. “Just don’t deny anything.”
“I don’t want to pretend to be a father when I would rather just be the father.” Sunchaser didn’t face her. “I loved you, Rainsong. I thought we were going to actually have a family together.”
“I loved you too.” Rainsong said quietly. “The timing just wasn’t right for us.”
“I don’t even know whose they are.” Sunchaser turned to face her. “You need to tell me if you expect me to do this.”
“I can’t.” Rainsong protested.
“Then that’s it.” Sunchaser prepared to walk away for good. His heart would hurt for a while, but they had moved on from each other. Her especially. He half-expected her to call out or try to stop him once more. But she didn’t. And he didn’t stop either.
And his heart cried.

After Rainsong's argument with Sunchaser, she decided that Patchedmask deserved to know. The kits were his too. Still panicking, she waited near their rock but eventually took up pacing beside the border, hoping to flag his attention in some way. Eventually, Rainsong was relieved to spot Patchedmask padding towards her, but he seemed slightly aggravated as well. Without waiting for him to cross the border, she ran up to him. "Thank StarClan you're here!" She sounded delirious. "You tell me what's wrong with you in a bit." She licked his face, knowing she was freaking him out and got a nuzzle in return. "But I'm expecting kits, and I don't know what to do!" She started to calm down but was still breathing quite hard.
He stared in shock for a moment but eventually broke into a grin. “We’re going to have a family! I’m going to be a father!” He was ecstatic. “Oh, isn’t it great, Rainsong? We’ll have kits!”
She leaned in against the tom. She was happy that he was excited, but did he not see the glaring issue before them? "I haven't really even thought about being a mother yet." She muttered almost to herself. "Will I even be a good mother?" She closed her eyes and sighed. If only she had never spoken to Patchedmask, but she didn't like that thought either. "I just don't know what to do."
He rested his chin on her head. “You’ll be a fantastic mother!” He purred. “I couldn’t imagine any other she-cat carrying my kits.” They stood together for a moment before Patchedmask gulp, now realizing the gravity of the situation before them. “D-do you know any toms in TwistedClan who would be the foster father?” He whispered.
Rainsong adverted her eyes. "I think I could talk Sunchaser into doing it. We just argued over this, but I don't think he'll deny any claims. The Clan already thinks they're his anyway." She took a step back from him. "What should we do about us?"
Patchedmask looked to his paws. “Rainsong - I love you. nothing will ever change that,” he murmured. “but, if you think it’s better for the kits, for us...” he meowed, trailing off.
Rainsong looked into his mismatched eyes. "I love you too, but I don't see how we could ever work." She wanted to go up to him and sit with him forever, but she kept her distance. "I wish we weren't from different clans, but we are, and we can't change that."
Patchedmask gave her a final nuzzle. “I love you.” He murmured in her ear and looked away.
Rainsong now avoided his eyes. They stood there in silence for a moment. "I shouldn't keep coming to see you anymore, however much I want to." Rainsong took a deep breath. "When the kits are old enough, I'll take them on a walk so you could see them. I'll make sure they know that it's you. And that you are special to them." Rainsong promised.
Patchedmask cast one last glance at Rainsong. “I’d love to meet them.” He choked out. “Goodbye, Rainsong.” They both turned to leave.
Rainsong left to walk the long trek back to the center of her camp. She found she did not regret her actions but only regretted that they were not allowed. Whether or not Sunchaser would ever accept any forms of friendship or anything further was not terribly important anymore. She might not have any cemented ties with Patchedmask anymore, but the memories would always be in the back of her mind, tugging and wanting to be pulled back out to the surface. Sometimes perhaps she would let them come and flood her thoughts once more, maybe even entertaining thoughts of what might have been if they didn't have to split apart. But that would come with time, and she still had her own duties to her own Clan. Rainsong would forever to loyal to TwistedClan, but a piece of her heart would always be just across the way with one mismatched tom, and she was perfectly okay with that.

(( ✏︎ "um, excuse me, but are you, by chance, summitstar?"

his eyes popped open and the new leader gasped as he realized a long-furred, gray and white she-cat was staring down at him. he shot to his paws, embarrassed at his unkempt fur that was sticking out at all odd angles. "yes, this is he. who, may i ask, are you?" he narrowed his eyes as the, as he now recognized, beautiful she-cat sat down and ran her tongue lightly over her slightly ruffled pelt.

"oh, me? i'm frost," she mewed, as if it were really that simple. summitstar rolled his eyes and flicked his tail, as if saying 'go on'. "well, about two days ago a weird cat with stars in her fur told me about this thing called 'jaggedclan'. she said that with my healing skills, i'd be quite useful here, and that i should find a tom named summitstar. you fit the description she gave me, so i'm assuming that's you," she mewed, pausing between sentences to lick a new spot of fur that stuck up awkwardly. summitstar nodded, and sat beside her.

"well, you've come to the right place. you'll learn about clan life quickly. from now on, hmm, you shall be called loonfrost. how does that sound?" he asked, and the she-cat's eyes brightened with excitement. "um, let me lead you to where you'll sleep and heal and store and yeah," summitstar mewed, trailing off as the she-cat looked at him expectantly. he stood up and padded down a long tunnel, keeping his tail against her ear so that she didn't lose him. the tunnel expanded into a large open room with lots of storage. loonfrost gasped and twirled in the new space.

"i love it!" she cried, rushing to a hollow and laying down in it before trying to climb the wall to reach the holes higher up. she fell, and summitstar rushed to her side as she laughed. her whole body shook as she chuckled and righted herself before she turned. "thank you," she whisper before licking his muzzle quickly and turning around to fully inspect her new den. blushing, summitstar made his way to the entrance to the camp. he decided to take a walk, and he stepped out into the thick snow.

a bright ginger pelt stuck out against the stark white snow, and summitstar halted in his tracks. "who goes there?" he called, glaring against the brightness of the sun reflecting on the snow. the ginger cat stopped, raised his hackles, and charged across the flat space with his head down. his forehead slammed into summitstar's side, but the tom had braced himself and barely moved an inch. summitstar whirled around and slammed his broad paws down onto the ginger cat's back, forcing him deeper into the snow. with a quick grab to the cat's scruff, summitstar hauled himself on top of the intruder and held him down. "i said. who. goes. there." the tom growled, spit hanging from his gaping maw in strings as he glared down at the now identified ginger tom's fierce face.

"the name's cherrystep. now can you get off my back?!" the tom snapped, and summitstar reluctantly got off when he realized this cat carried a warrior name.

"come with me," summitstar meowed and turned before cherrystep could even protest. the two toms set off, trudging through the deep snow, and finally they reached the entrance to the camp. summitstar cast a wary look over his shoulder before starting to make his way through the tunnel that lead the the gathering cavern. "loonfrost! we have a visitor!" summitstar cried, and the she-cat rushed out from the medicince cavern. the two sat side-by-side with cherrystep facing them. "who are you and why are you on jaggedclan territory?" summitstar meowed, eyeing the newcomer warily.

"like i said. my name is cherrystep. i hail from graveclan, but i decided i needed to leave. so much murder, so much death," the tom paused as he shuddered. "i'm not old, but i'm starting to get on up there in moons. i didn't want to live somewhere that my life was constantly at stake. i take it you're a new clan? then i'd like to join. i'll be your first warrior," cherrystep declared, and summitstar grinned. he liked this tom already.

"you can keep your name. meet loonfrost. she's our medicine cat. have her show you around camp and then you and i will go out hunting," summitstar decided, and cherrystep dipped his head in respect. summitstar sat by the entrance, and stood when cherrystep padded up beside him.

"i'm summitstar. i've only been running this clan for two moons now, so any advice would be greatly appreciated," the tom said with a chuckled edging his mew. cherrystep let out a snort and bumped shoulders with the leader.

"not much i can do for you there, buddy," the tom said, and summitstar just grinned. cherrystep stiffened, and a malicious smile slid across his face. "hare," he whispered, and summitstar just grinned.

loonfrost pawed through the snow, grimacing when yet another dried out shoot appeared underneath her gentle paws. she sighed before spotting the two toms chasing a fat hare up a slope in the distance. her heart warmed as she spotted summitstar's gray and white pelt melting into the background. 'you're not allowed to take a mate. get it together, loony!' she inwardly snapped at herself for fawning over a tom, and pawed at another lump of snow. her lips peeled back in disgust when the rotting body of a mouse came up instead of any useful herbs. she quickly buried the crowfood and set off back towards camp.

summitstar sighed as the moon rose, and said goodbye to his new clanmates. he set off across the mountain, all the way to the shimmering waterfall he had seen earlier that moon. he knew it was special, the way it didn't freeze and seemed to shine as if stars were flecked through its ever-moving waters. he gasped as the coldness rushed over his muzzle when he plunged his face in to drink. he sat and stared at the stars, smiling as he took it its beauty. "starclan, i need a loyal deputy who can govern by my side. it won't be long until our cavern is overflowing with cats, and jaggedclan will need fierce leadership. i know i can't do that on my own. i need someone's help! i can't appoint cherrystep. loonfrost wouldn't like that since he originally hails from an enemy clan. please, starclan, help me," he sent up his plea before turning around and padding back to camp. ))

Lashing rain. It was unending, continuous, ceaseless... Marring the surroundings with large unfeeling puddles of grey.

Or were they eyes? Sorrowful eyes growing larger and larger as they saw the rain, Oliveshadow thought as she stared around from a large tree. How she had gotten there she didn't know. The eyes did, forever gaping in wonder at the dark clouds. As she looked on the pools turned an icy blue. Lyrastar's eyes, Dawnteller's eyes, they were watching her with no specific owner. Then they were dark pits of anger, happiness, distrust. But how could she notice, when she saw a tortoiseshell staggering past her watcher, with markings so much like Shadow, her friend from moons before? Then she was swallowed by the eyes. Only then was Oliveshadow aware of who she was, and of the many cats wailing in distress among the trees with her.



Splash! Robinrise opened her eyes abruptly to a large drop splashing on her nose. "Stop it!" she growled uncertainty, swiping the air. In the nest next to her Shellrise sneezed and shivered, and in another nest Dapplerise's paws twitched. Lizardrise's eerie green eyes stared back at the small tortoiseshell in the dark den. Robinrise held her gaze, narrowing her eyes.

Ever since the incident when Lizardrise had been rude to Berryrise and Robinrise had protected her friend the two were rivals, and most of the family's members took care to avoid the other family. Dapplerise and Oakrise often tagged along with Lizardrise and Streamrise, and Swiftsky stayed friends with Thunderbird and Berryrise's parents, but the tortoiseshell and the tabby were sworn enemies even though they hardly spoke - when they did speak Robinrise's siblings faithfully gathered nearby and Ebonypool watched the apprentices with sharp eyes. Without a word Robinrise stepped outside the den and gasped at the world surrounding her.

Everything the rain could touch was soaked, puddles that could swallow a young kit were dotted around the soil, every den was damp. Petalfang was talking with Emberblaze, her eyes clouding with worry. Occasionally their eyes would drift to the clouds, still dripping large droplets without an end. Solarspark studied the puddles and walked through them curiously, her paws a muddy brown as she blissfully ignored every other cat. Daisystream sat peacefully in one area of the camp with Lilypad and Burnetheart, sheltering under the trees and what little cover they had. Curiously, the small she-cat went over to Petalfang, curious as to what the elder would say. Emberblaze had a grave face on and she wondered how bad the rain was, if it warranted such a look from the Lunar Guardian. "Russetheart has a terrible case of bad joints, Emberblaze. Do you have anything that can help?" asked Petalfang. Russetheart was a good friend of hers and she was clearly worried about what was going on. "I'm not sure what good herbs we have for this, but comfrey soothes wounds and aches. I'll see if we have any in supply," Emberblaze meowed, his gaze sharp with worry. "What's going on?" demanded Robinrise, her gaze sharp and curious. Two hollow eyes filled with worry stared back at her. "The territory seems to be flooding." Emberblaze meowed sadly. Petalfang nodded. "If it carries on like this then the camp will flood. First it was frost, now it's going to rain. We can move the camp in time, possibly." the grey and white she-cat rasped, determination in her old mew. "We need to tell Lyrastar then!" Robinrise protested loudly. Water rippled at her paws and she was faintly aware that something was coming towards them.

Solarspark, nosy as ever, jumped up on the group and bellowed, "Hello! What's going on?" she enquired curiously. Petalfang looked round in astonishment and Emberblaze's eyes jerked up, only to realise it was just the Solar Guardian. Robinrise snorted as she saw the excitable she-cat jumping about. "Russetheart has aching joints. It isn't the fault of the apprentices, but I've noticed that all of the dens have been very damp. Eaglefrost and Greystone agree with me that if we don't move away from the river then the camp will flood." Petalfang explained, her tail flicking nervously. "I'll tell Lyrastar right away!" chirruped Solarspark eagerly. Emberblaze shared an amused smile with the elder. "Are there any more cats in your den that are in pain? I hope that no one is suffering from the weather," Emberblaze informed them, mostly talking to the elder. "Shellrise has been sneezing a lot recently! No one else is though." Robinrise told him. She was cautious - no cat had ever really been ill with some kind of virus (like the dreaded greencough) in CosmoClan but her brother had been coughing recently, coming down with some kind of illness that made Robinrise feel uneasy. Emberblaze nodded and collected his herbs, leaving the apprentice to get on with her morning.

When it was hot enough to claim it as midday (even though the sun couldn't be seen) Robinrise was sharing a shrew with Roserise and Berryrise. Even as they sat there, under a tree with the other apprentices, Robinrise was sure that the rain wasn't going to stop. The puddles had been growing and growing through the days. There were short uneventful sessions of rain but they were scattered. A worry crept up in her as she conversed with her friends, but it was only a small one - it wouldn't happen. But the sun didn't rear it's head.

Flamewing opened her eyes and shivered. Everything was wet - the nests were wet, the floor was wet, and unfortunately even the warriors were wet. She hissed. The apprentices were terrible at cleaning out the dens nowadays, but she did not mutter this to any of the cats she had grown up with sitting around her. She had never really been friendly with many of the other warriors, but she tried hard with Cherryrise and was able to make her smile easily. Instead, Flamewing decided to go off and talk to Speckledleaf, her sister. Speckledleaf was her greatest friend who understood her more then the others did, and as they had been together since birth they did not need to speak to understand how either of them were feeling.

"How are you?" asked Flamewing as she entered the nursery, shaking the water off her paws as it swelled around her ankles. Her sister smiled as she saw her come in, and Rookkit raised her head sleepily. "Cold!" the she-cat announced, a frown on her face. "I'm surprised that the apprentices haven't become kits again as the den isn't very warm and the ground is damp," She continued. Flamewing purred as she talked with her sister, forgetting her wet fur for a moment.
In the distance, something snapped. It was a small sound, something barely audible below the unending rain, but it was enough to make Flamewing's ears prick up and rotate towards the noise. She hastily scrambled out of the nursery entrance to look, and took multiple steps forwards.

"I'll go check what it is," the tortoiseshell felt a second chill creep into her bones. It wasn't the rain's quiet chill that crept in and settled itself into her fur, but rather it was fear. Turning her amber eyes to the den of the two Guardians, she saw her father's terrified face. "Emberblaze!" she called. But his gaze was trained towards something else.

A wave of muddy water broke the camp entrance, overflowing everything in it's path. The noise before had been the river boundaries being destroyed by the huge mass of water that had built up in the storm, and now it had come to wreck their lives. The loud splash of the water was enough to bring the damp cats out of their dens and look on in horror, and soon Lyrastar was shooting out of her nest in the MoonTree, attempting to calm her clan in desperation. "Leave the camp in an orderly fashion! No cat must be left behind!" she ordered, the fur on her neck rising. Lyrastar's gaze oversaw the camp, but Flamewing hardly noticed this as she ran to the nursery, taking note of the chaos as cats ran back and forth with kits, herbs and prey, some biting onto others tails in an attempt to stay together while the water rose rapidly (the main example of this, she noticed, was Saffronblaze and Gorsetalon, overcome by the desire to get out of camp).

Softstep was already padding out of the nursery, carrying Larchkit in her mouth and with Hollykit clinging to her tail. Birchkit and Mintkit were mewling as Kitetalon tugged them out of the nursery, and Sunkit and Rookkit were already accounted for, being hastily taken by a terrified Mouseflower and Harerise. Featherfall was carefully lead of camp, being reassured that it was going to be alright by a quaking Birdlight. Lyrastar darted over to them, and Flamewing felt her reassuring gaze over her as she took a few steps back and began to tear at the nursery to free the rest of the kits and queens tortoishell paws fought from the over side. Brambles tore at her hardened paw pads and brought a bead of blood upon then, but her frantic claws still tore at the twigs. The water was rising higher in the nursery, and the small hole that marked the entrance was clearly not enough. Heatherclaw struggled out, leaning onto Hurricanegaze's shoulder. "There now," the old warrior muttered, her blue grey fur flattened to her sides as she nudged her daughter out of camp. "We'll be safe soon," she urged the queen, who stumbled along on unsteady legs. "Head towards the cliffs, climb trees, and help eachother! Teamwork is crucial!" Lyrastar yowled, leaving the nursery to direct everyone out. Cats still ran back and forth, helping each other and climbing the nearest trees or protecting eachother Speckledleaf pushed some twigs towards Flamewing (who had water swirling round her legs, even lapping to the base of her tail) and her head gasped for air as she attempted to stand, but the water knocked her off her tired paws. Flamewing heard her gasp and it tore at her heart to know that both of them were struggling to help each other. Most of the cats had dispersed by now, and even Emberblaze began to stray, his own heart torn in two again, like it had many moons before.

A groan echoed through the camp as the elders den collapsed, trapping Russetheart inside. Herontalon gasped, his eyes filled with grief for the elder, but ran over to help Flamewing dig out entrance to the nursery and make it bigger. Dawnkit and Blossomkit were recovered from the wreckage in a hole Speckledleaf formed that was just big enough for her to fit through. Woosh! Rain pattered down steadily and the river emptied of all the water it carried.

Instead of saving herself, Speckledleaf pushed the kits through the hole she had made, her paws weakening. Darkness wobbled at the edges of her vision and more twigs dispersed from the nursery, but the water weighing down her fur made her chilled, her paws stopping their mad swirl for survival. The young she-cat fought desperately, gasping out some words just before debris covered her body and forced her to gasp in the dirty waves of terror that mirrored her feelings. She had to let go, despite how much she would try to fight. Her green orbs blinked at Flamewing sadly, her sadness tearing at her as she knew she would not be able to get out of this one if she didn't get another breath soon. "Look after everyone, Flame," she gasped, before her body fell limp. She gave one last sorrowful look at her sister, the first cat she remembered seeing and the one that made her complete, until her eyes could see no more, only deep, murky darkness.
Flamewing blinked in shock, numbed by the suddenness of the situation as Speckledleaf's head sank under. Without feeling, she was lead swiftly away by Herontalon, who pressed against her side, beckoning an increasingly panicked Cherryrise to flanked her other side as they carried Dawnkit and Blossomkit. The camp fell silent, with water swirling around their paws and chilling their fur. It was deserted, the great home that had nurtured so many. Gone.


The days that followed were bleak. No cats had any sleep and everything was still wet and slippery. The flood had gone down, and the clan had been able to escape the trees to flee to the cliffs where half of them were already sheltering. Shellrise was discovered to have greencough, but died in his sleep shortly after, while Bramblingtuft decided to try and recieve a sign from the ancestors, but rocks had collapsed on him before he could do anything. Cats were losing faith.

All of this could have been prevented if Oliveshadow had shared her dream. The Calico knew this, was was saddened. In a way, she had betrayed this clan, and that cut her more then any disaster could. The troubled she-cat felt responsible for everything, and she was shocked at what an effect the events had. Lyrastar's spirit was hurt , and her blue eyes were filled with pain. Oliveshadow hated every moment of it, especially when the noble leader revealed she had lost two lives because she had slipped from one of the trees when all of them could have safely been on the cliffs, one of the highest points of the territory that was far off from where the flood had struck. Oliveshadow observed her clanmates, broken by the tragedy. Lyrastar was upset and weakened, Emberblaze saw nothing as he stared ahead, thinking only of his dead daughter, Featherfall tried to help, the only figure in authority desperately doing anything, and Solarspark, her energy having escaped her as she bent over to cough. It was a saddening sight, and she had to do something to help. The wails from the trees in both her dream and what she had seen a couple of days before had proven that every cat needed some kind of guide.

Drawing in a deep breath, Oliveshadow stood on top of a tree stump, drawing multiple weary gazes to stare at her: a traitor to a tribe in the mountains, a cat who was quick footed and a good hunter and herb gatherer to some, and a shy calico who kept to herself as known by many, and someone who was stepping up when no one else would. Light drew from the clouds and rested on her fluffy pelt, highlighting her broad head so that she glowed like a beacon of hope. "Cats of CosmoClan," she began, her eyes surveying every cat, before coming to Lyrastar's eyes. The leader dipped her head, allowing her to continue. "The flood was devastating. We have lost friends and family-" her eyes settled on Emberblaze and Speckledleaf, who seemed not to be focusing on her but had their ears pricked, - and our home. A dark... Cloud has been cast over our sun, our hope, but we don't have to be so down. This is a bad time, but every clan, and even tribes in the mountains have had these. I know times are bad, but we don't have to run away from out problems." she swallowed nervously, but no one caught her looking up at the mountain she had fled from."Why should we dwell on our problems, hide in the shadows, when we can rebuild our lives again? I joined this clan because it gave me happiness, and even if we no longer have that we have eachother. Friends are the best thing to have if you have nothing else. We are all a team, a Clan, and if we work together we can fix our home and create another one!"

Silence. Awe, wonder, hope... Everywhere Oliveshadow looked there was a supportive face, ready to help her. Even great warriors like Swiftsky, even the Guardians and the leader were amazed at her speech, and she too was surprised such words had come from her. Everyone began to move, a sea of pelts and shining eyes that looked to her for guidance. For the first time in a long while, Oliveshadow felt like she had found a home, and there were cats waiting to talk to her. No angry faces, but stirred friends ready to rebuild their home, right here and right now.

And the sun emerged fully from the clouds.

tansybloom’s unkempt fur stood on end as she watched her first apprentice walk towards her. she reluctantly bumped heads with foxpaw, but the anger she felt inside began to boil. her eyes narrowed as she watched ferretstar assign more mentors. he had given tansybloom no consideration or other option; it was as if he mocked her, giving her an apprentice with such a name.

marigoldpaw and rowanpaw ran to bump heads with their sister as the ceremony ended. tansybloom’s irritated demeanor caught rowanpaw’s eye, but he shrugged it off for now. the trio padded off, bouncing questions off of each other as they headed for the apprentice’s den.

tansybloom’s nose twitched with irritation. she blew breath between clenched teeth as she turned towards the medicine cat’s den. a consultation from sunnysprout would cheer any cat up.

sunnysprout’s ear flicked as she heard the sheer moss crinkle against tansybloom’s fur. the medicine cat purred at the sight of her friend, affectionately bumping against her cheek. sunnysprout padded back towards her herb stash with tansybloom now in tow, asking the reason for her arrival. “worried about your first apprentice?” she guessed.

tansybloom tilted her head in a so-so fashion. “i guess so. i guess i’m a bit angry about foxpaw’s name.” the words felt like flames on her tongue; she was quick to silence herself before saying anything she’d regret.

sunnysprout looked to the molly with a questioning expression before she remembered. she was just a kit when tansybloom’s sister, lilypaw, was killed by a mother fox. tansybloom had pushed every cat away after that, only coming to sunnysprout for solace and support. the molly simply nodded her understanding, meeting tansybloom’s shaky gaze. she stood to catch tansybloom as she buried herself into the medicine cat’s fur.

the warrior seemed to collapse into sunnysprout’s side, humiliating sobs escaping her. she flexed her claws into the tear-stained earth as the medicine cat soothed her. “it’s okay to be angry. it’s okay.” she mewed softly, pressing her nose against tansybloom’s cheek. tansybloom slowly rose her head to meet sunnysprout’s warm gaze. she blinked tears away as her lips curled to a smile.

the dewclan camp buzzed with life. the clan was growing into a strong, full clan. the nursery was loud as kits played within, and warriors were on their toes as they worked throughout camp.
“they’re so small! i can’t wait until we can all play!” lionkit chirped, gazing at the two newest bundles within the nursery. tigerkit and shiverkit had been born this moon, and they were now two tiny fluff-balls suckling at their mother’s belly. emberspark purred quietly as she looked down at her kits. dawnlight’s kits watched the two curiously, fantasizing playing games with them. “they’re beautiful, emberspark.” dawnlight smiled. “thank you.” emberspark murmured, looking to the queen. “appreciate them when they’re that small, they only get louder and more energetic from here.” dawnlight chuckled, turning to her kits. “you three should be napping.” she meowed. “no!” all three kits gasped. “yes!” dawnlight corrected them, wrapping her tail around them and guiding them to her nest. “if you don’t nap, you’ll have no energy.” the molly said before settling down by her kits. emberspark sighed, wrapping her tail around her two kits and curling up she round them before falling asleep aswell.

froststar gazed at her deputy, well, former deputy. “marigoldstep, i trusted you!” she snapped. “i’m sor-“ “no, you know what? fine, fine! dewclan is better off without a traitor as a leader.” she laughed, standing up. “go on, go to your pretty mate and watch as i tell the entire clan about this.” she snorted, whirling around before padding out the den. marigoldstep watched, mouth open in shock. had she made the wrong choice?

“may all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here, beneath high-branch for a clan meeting!” froststar yowled. soon, cats gathered below, eyes questioning as they stared up at froststar. however, the leader’s gaze was focused strictly on marigoldstep. some cats loyalties may not lie within the clan, froststar reminded herself. with a snort, she looked away. “marigoldstep has retired from her rank as deputy.” froststar meowed, her voice loud. gasps spread throughout the crowd as eyes shot towards the molly. “she’s expecting kits and wishes to live he rest of her life as a warrior afterwards.” froststar continued. “i will not be appointing a new deputy.” she added, leaping down before the yowls of protest stopped her. “starclan will be angry!” “has froststar gone mad?” “what will we do without a deputy?” the cats muttered, remaining in their crowd.

patchedmask had decided to take a walk in the forest after froststar’s announcement. marigoldstep, the clan’s deputy, had retired from her position after learning she was expecting fallowfur’s kits. froststar refused to appoint a new deputy despite the tradition that went way back in the history of all clans. patchedmask was frustrated, scared that starclan may be angry with the clan. if they were, what would they do to dewclan?

patchedmask’s thoughts were interrupted when a familiar scent hit his nose. rainsong? the tom’s ears flicked forward and he padded towards the border, only to find what looked like a distressed rainsong. “rainsong? are you alright?” he murmured, padding up to her. when the molly saw him, she ran up to him, without waiting for him to cross the border. patchedmask saw panic overwhelming rainsong before she spoke. he nuzzled her when she came up to him. "thank starclan you're here!" she meowed, sounding delirious. "you tell me what's wrong with you in a bit." she said, licking his face, knowing she was freaking him out. "but I'm expecting kits, and I don't know what to do!" she breathed, starting to calm down. the tom stared at her in pure shock when she said the words. i’m expecting kits. the words echoed in his head for a moment, but he smiled, not seeming to understand what the problem was. “we’re going to have a family! i’m going to be a father!” he meowed happily. patchedmask has always wanted to be a father, and he was ecstatic to hear the news. “oh, isn’t it great, rainsong? we’ll have kits!” he purred. the molly leaned in against the tom. "i haven't really even thought about being a mother yet." she muttered quietly. "will i even be a good mother?" she closed her eyes and sighed. "i just don't know what to do." patchedmask rested his chin on her head. “you’ll be a fantastic mother!” he purred. “i couldn’t imagine any other she-cat carrying my kits.” he murmured. then, it hit him. they were from different clans, how would he ever even see his kits? would he ever see them? with a gulp, he meowed, “d-do you know any toms in twistedclan who could be a foster father?” he whispered. rainsong adverted her eyes. "i think i could talk sunchaser into doing it. we just argued over this, but i don't think he'll deny any claims. the clan already thinks they're his anyway." she took a step back from him. "what should we do about us?" patchedmask looked to his paws. “rainsong - i love you. nothing will ever change that.” he murmured. “but, if you think it’s better for the kits, for us...” he meowed, trailing off. rainsong looked to patchedmask. "i love you too, but i don't see how we could ever work." she murmured, keeping her distance. "i wish we weren't from different clans, but we are and we can't change that." she sighed. “i love you..” he murmured, padding up to her before giving her a nuzzle. before rainsong could see his eyes tearing up, he looked away, heartbroken. would he ever see his own kits? they stood there in silence for a moment. "i shouldn't keep coming to see you anymore, however much i want to." rainsong took a deep breath. "when the kits are old enough, i’ll take them on a walk so you could see them. i’ll make sure they know that it's you. and that you are special to them." the molly promised. patchedmask cast one last glance at rainsong, nodding. “i’d love to meet them.” he meowed, the words choking out. “goodbye, rainsong.” he murmured, padding away. memories of the two together swirled in his head, when they first met, gazing at the stars, sitting on the pile of rocks, falling in love, everything.

patchedmask ran until he was deep into dewclan territory, eyes streaming with tears. he loved rainsong, why didn’t she seem to love him? was she ever truly in love with him? anger beginning to overwhelm him, patchedmask let out a yowl of frustration, tearing at the bark of a tree. “patchedmask?” a voice whispered. alarmed, the tom spins round, only to see orchiddapple before him. unstartled by the tom, she looked into his eyes, but he averted his gaze. “what’s wrong?” she asked. “i can’t..” he began, sitting down. “you were visiting a twistedclan cat, yes?” she meowed. patchedmask stiffened. “i scented you, and i saw you a night after.” she meowed. “i didn’t tell anyone, and i won’t.” she promised. “but, tell me, what’s wrong?” she added. “it’s over.” he meowed simply. “it should’ve never happened.” he added. orchiddapple’s eyes shone with sympathy for the tom. “do you want to go on a walk?” she whispered. the tom nodded, standing up. with that, the two cats walked further away from the camp, orchiddapple’s tail resting on his shoulder comfortingly.

Though snow still falls enough to account for a visibility issue, the weather has begun to warm somewhat. Elders swear they can feel newleaf in their bones, or perhaps hear it with their ears in the twittering of the newly returned robins. Lovebirds have begun to start exchanging that look that can only mean one thing: kits. There's a flood of new life in store for Fireclan, but they have to make it through the rest of leafbare first.

► Blazepool finds x1 mousebile & x1 marigold

However thrilling, Blazepool found there to be something lonely about being trusted to gather herbs on his lonesome. The marigold he had managed to scrounge, spotting its bright orange hue against the snow from half-way across the forest, would be vital to Fireclan's survival, he knew this. But still. The medicine cat longed to be back with Valleyglow and Pinepaw, the warmth of their pelts pushing back against the winter's chill and the warmth of their laughter driving away remembrances of past tragedy.

A flash of grey darted across Blazepool's vision. A mouse! His instincts took over, and the medicine cat slid into a hunting crouch before he even registered what he was doing. While his form was sloppy there was no creature besides the mouse to judge him, and even it didn't live to tell tales. The warm body of his prey stove off the cold. Its meat would give Blazepool the energy to carry on with his expedition an its bile would make a welcome, if smelly, addition to the medicine stock.

► Everyone is healing nicely but Blackpaw still isn't speaking

"Blackpaw say ahh." Though Blackpaw opened his mouth as Valleyglow instructed, he did not let out the same noise that she did. The medicine cat's heart dropped a little at that, and far more dramatically so by what she saw when she looked down the apprentice's throat.

"I think that's the first time I've been disappointed to find a patient displaying no illness," Valleyglow confessed to Smokewhisker a little bit later. "I've treated for sore throat, infection, and even cysts just to be safe, but Blackpaw doesn't appear to be sick at all." To her surprise, Smokewhisker seemed to have expected such a result.

"His parents were outed as murderers and killed. It's not so unusual for kits in such situations to retreat, Blackpaw has simply done so by ceasing to speak," the therapist explained, "I'm afraid herbs can't do much at this point. I'll keep speaking with him and maybe he'll start speaking again. Or maybe he won't. The most important thing is for Blackpaw to have support as he comes to terms with his parent's fates."

► Pebblepaw learns herbal knowledge

"I'm learning herbs?" Pebblepaw had cried out in shock upon finding Smokewhisker perched in front of a spread of plants in the therapist's den. "I thought I wouldn't have to memorize these stinking things," he groused.

Smokewhisker chuckled and shook his head. "Herbs are an important supplement to our job. Talking can do many things but in certain cases, especially involving cats with continuous troubles, herbs can aid in the recovery process."

Pebblepaw scrunched his nose against the sharp tang of thyme as he sat down across from Smokewhisker. "I just thought the medicine cats dealt with prescriptions and things."

"To some extent," Smokewhisker agreed, "But we need to know enough to be able to consider all options for our patients. Today we'll be starting with temporary sedatives. I'm sure you're familiar with poppy seeds?"

► Pinepaw learns herbal recognition

"What are these?" Valleyglow directed Pinepaw's attention to a collection of dark blue berries arranged on a pale oak leaf. The apprentice thought about it for a moment and then nodded her head.

"Those are juniper berries," she mewed confidently.

"Good." Valleyglow let out a purr of approval that made Pinepaw flush with pride. "Now can you tell me what these berries are?" This time she indicated a pawful of a small red berries.

A flash on confusion shot through Pinepaw but she answered nearly as confidently as before, "Those are death berries. Why do we have them here?"

"Holly berries actually," Valleyglow clarified, "Still poisonous though. We mostly keep them around for educational purposes, and perhaps on the off chance they have a beneficial purpose." The head medicine cat stared at the berries for a few heartbeats, seemingly lost in thought. "So far, nothing. Bad to the seed."

"Last one up's a mousebile-soaked moss bile!" jeered Nimbuspaw as he shot up the side of the tree, Smokepaw right on his heels. Brightpaw too was picking her way up the old oak, trailing a bit behind the two toms partially due to caution and partially due to constantly shooting the still land-bound Fuzzypaw sympathetic looks.

"It's not fair," whined Fuzzypaw to his mentor.

"Hush," Lionheart teased, "Do you want Brightpaw to hear you complain?" Fuzzypaw thought his mentor took too much pleasure in watching him blush and squirm, but nonetheless the little tom lowered his voice the next time he complained.

"How come Nimbuspaw and Smokepaw and Brightpaw get to race while I'm still on the ground."

"Because you decided to wait until halfway through fishing training to announce the water was too cold," Lionheart explained coolly.

"Well it was."

Fuzzypaw's mentor stifled a laugh, his eyes dancing with amusement. "Slow and steady is always a better bet than launching yourself straight into things. Take your time to learn and you'll out-climb even Nimbuspaw." And because Lionheart sounded so sure of his words, like he was speaking from long-lost wisdom, Fuzzypaw relented.

Swimming training was going about as well as could be expected during leafbare when Aspenpaw let out a sudden yelp and went under. Lavendernose was immediately on him, grasping her apprentice by the scruff and struggling against the current as best as she could with only three paws. Ambereyes swam over and helped her and Aspenpaw over to the shore where they collapsed in a huffing mess as Stillpaw and Nightpaw tried to warm them up with rough licks.

"I'm okay," Aspenpaw insisted, "I just caught my paw on something and twisted it. The surprise made me lose my rhythm."

"You swum well," agreed Lavendernose once she had collected herself enough to speak without her teeth chattering. "But I think that's enough excitement for today. We should all go see Valleyglow and get some rest."

With every blow Galepaw forced Snowpaw back. The little white apprentice searched frantically for a weakness, any opportunity to gain back ground. But alas, Galepaw was far larger than her and also far too smart to fall for any of the ploys Brindlestripe had suggested for dealing with bigger opponents. Then Galepaw pulled a blow, perhaps feeling bad for beating Snowpaw so easily, and the apprentice saw her chance.

When Galepaw went to strike again, Snowpaw surprised him by leaning into it instead of flinching away, using her unhindered momentum to brush past his jab towards his undefended side. But she wasn't quick enough to pull it off. Instead Galepaw recovered from her blow before Snowpaw had a chance to get clear of the strike zone and delivered a rough hipcheck that sent the younger apprentice spinning off balance, followed by a rain of clean blows that drove her back and out of the ring.

"That's enough." Sweetpatch called the match. "Galepaw is the victor. Nice recovery out there. Snowpaw? Attacking Galepaw's side was a smart move. You'll manage it next time."

► Paperpaw learns fishing but develops a bad ear infection which culminates in a high fever and a burst ear drum, leaving her deaf in the right ear. She will need x1 borage, x1 sweet-sedge, x1 poppy seeds & 2 moons of rest.

"I don't understand!" exclaimed Yewfeather, "She was fine when we were out fishing just yesterday!" The warrior was pacing nervously around the medicine den. Pinepaw kept offering her moss to drink from, or somewhere to sit. Anything to keep her from upsetting the patients with her fretting.

"Valleyglow says infection-based fevers don't always show warning signs," Pinepaw mewed as soothingly as she could manage, "Sometimes all a cat notices at first is a slight ear-ache or dizziness."

Though Pinepaw was trying to alleviate Yewfeather's guilt it was to little effect. "Your mother's going to have my pelt," mumbled the warrior, half to herself. Pinepaw couldn't think of anything else to say, so she and Yewfeather waited for Valleyglow to be done working with Paperpaw and give them the news.

"This ended up a far larger group than I expected," mewed Riverstripe half-mournfully as she and Reedtail watched their apprentices take turns stalking one another. Icepaw still hadn't quite caught on to the moving silently part of it all.

"Aww Riverstripe, if you wanted some alone time you could have just asked," Reedtail teased, laughing as her friend's fur momentarily stood on edge. Turning her attention to her apprentice she called out in encouragement, "You can do it Icepaw!"

Riverstripe willed her pelt to stop flushing. "Icepaw might be better off with you giving him advice rather than affirmation,"she drawled to regain her lost pride. Reedtail just shrugged in response.

"I can't help what I'm good at."

Coalpaw stood alone at the edge of the clearing, eyeing Burnettface. Only Coalpaw's assessor, not his mentor- that would always be Stonebark, stood between the apprentice and warriorhood. He just had to beat her in a fight.

"Come on Coalpaw," Burnettface called encouragingly, "You can do it. You're almost there!" Burnettface's words drove out the cold that had settled in Coalpaw's bones when he had been split off from Emberpaw and Sandpaw after the joint section of their assessment. He could do this. He had to do this.

With a mighty yowl the apprentice charged into the clearing towards Burnettface, claws sheathed but spirit soaring.

► Leopardeye's patrol catches x1 mouse

"Just one mouse?" Leopardeye's mew was reserved, like she had expected her patrol to fall victim to bad luck. Perhaps she had- the falling snow, while not a dangerous storm at the moment, made tracking difficult. Not to mention the cold that made warrior and prey alike wish to go home and curl up in their dens.

"The deaths a few moons ago means less cats are available to hunt," mewed Brightheart quietly, by way of explanation.

"But it also means less mouths to feed."

"Ashfur! That's unkind!" The horrified expressions of the rest of the patrol reflected Rippleface's indignation.

The young warrior shifted awkwardly under the attention of the patrol, not willing to meet their eyes for all the self-righteousness of her defense. "I'm not wrong. Unless we're talking prodigies it doesn't matter how many cats are hunting during leafbare. It's all luck." Sensing the atmosphere grow only more uncomfortable Ashfur picked up the mouse, her catch, and stalked off to bring it back to camp.

► Cloudstride's patrol finds a potential warrior

"So," Willowshade began when everything had grown too quite for her liking, "How's warriorhood been treating you?"

"Okay," Cloudstride replied hesitantly. He wasn't exactly sure what to say to the other warrior. She was old enough to be his mother- in fact her own kits were older than he was. The silence was so awkward that Cloudstride was almost relieved when an unknown cat burst out of the brush and barreled towards them.

The cat let out an unearthly howl as it charged, and it was all Cloudstride could do to leap out of the way before he was trampled. The cat, carried by their unspent momentum, charged right into a snowdrift and didn't move.

"Are they- should we-" Cloudstride looked to Willowshade for instruction. He wasn't actually sure what was going on.

From the snowdrift came a mew muffled by snow. Cloudstride and Willowshade watched curiously as the cat pulled themselves out of the drift and whipped around to face them. "Valiant warrior!" the cat cried all too loud, forepaw extended dramatically in Cloudstride's direction, "You have bested me in combat. Now I shall come and serve your clan!"

The two warriors exchanged baffled glances. "Okay," Willowshade mewed slowly, "Let's get you back to camp and see what Greystar has to say."

► The kits want to have a funeral for a beetle they had grown attached to and will need x1 mint to carry it out. It's advised to go along with their wishes and to also have Smokewhisker spare x1 moon to speak with them about death.

The extra padding of the nursery den did nothing to deafen the wails of eleven heartbroken kits. It was Summitkit who had found the body first and his sorrow quickly spread to the other kits. Even Hollowkit, who was too young to really know what was going on, had joined in with the other's cries.

"What's wrong?" asked Blazepool of Daisypatch. Scraps of green still clung to his paws- it was clear he had rushed to the nursery in the midst of sorting herbs.

"I'm sorry," the nursery hand mewed apologetically, "They're a bit worked up over-"

"Clack is dead!" wailed Goosekit.

Blazepool glanced at Daisypatch in alarm. Was Clack a new cat someone had forgotten to mention to him? "Clack was their pet beetle," Daisypatch quickly assured him, "Sunsplash gave it to them this morning. I told her they would get too attached!"

"I- I'm going to go get Smokewhisker."

► Barkstar finds the mysterious cat who is amenable to joining as a fighter

"So your name is Crab?" Barkstar felt an odd shiver run down his spine as he stared at this cat who was almost a perfect reflection of himself. But brown tabbies weren't that rare- he was just being jumpy. And jumpy was not a trait suitable of a leader.

"Hard 'ckc'," clarified Crab, repeating their name with a strong 'ckc' sound that made it almost sound like Krab. "I'm looking for my brother. He's around here somewhere but the snow must have driven him underground." Crab sneered rather unpleasantly, which went a ways to alleviate Barkstar's concerns. Disgust he understood. Wants he could work with.

"And you want help?"

"I'll make it worth your while," Crab promised, sheathing and unsheathing their claws. "I'm more than happy to take care of some of your problems too."

► Tigerfang steals x2 comfrey & x1 lungwart, Fireclan none the wiser

Tigerfang could have been in and out in less than two heartbeats, he was the best thief in the forest after all, but he couldn't suppress the urge to have a little look around. The camp was quiet and Tigerfang had to marvel at how easily these clan cats lowered their guard after an attack. No wonder Barkstar wanted to wipe them out- they were a walking hazard of trust.

The warriors were all fast asleep, even the guards Tigerfang had snuck easily by. The apprentices still awake, being regaled by the tales of their friends' assessments, paid the dark cat padding around no mind. Tigerfang was just another silhouette. The thief even dared to stick his head into the nursery. How easy it would have been to snatch a kit, had he been so inclined. But no, Tigerfang was here for herbs tonight.

The herbs were easily taken. No one seemed to have notice the last batch he had taken and so the stash remained unguarded near the forefront of the medicine den. Taking a mouthful of leaves and slipping back into the night was like taking a mouse from a kit.

► While building dens Tawnypelt finds a pawful of gorgeous stones

A few moons ago, if Tawnypelt knew she was going to be building her own den, she would have stayed solo. If she knew that she would have to build dens for others? She would have clawed all of Barkstar's nine lives when he asked her to join. But now, so far into her pregnancy, the molly had come to realize that as much as she disliked being ordered around, it was a better alternative than giving birth alone in the snow.

That didn't mean she couldn't be annoyed however. When the bramble she was threading amongst the brush pricked her again, Tawnypelt threw the thing down in disgust. "Stupid vine! We'd be better off digging our own dens," she hissed to no one in particular. As if to prove her point she began to dig, burying the bramble like one might their excrement. Then her paws found purchase on something shiny and cold.

Tawnypelt had unearthed a cache of beautiful stones and hard gold disks. As she retracted her claws she had to shake off scraps of decayed paper and canvas. "What on earth?" The mother gasped. She wasn't sure what the stones were, or why they were there, but she had to admit to herself that they were rather pretty. Making dens might be worth it if she got to decorate her nest with such baubles.

They both passed their assesments with flying colours, and despite being only moments from becoming full members of the clan, have to use everything in their power to stop themselves from squealing like kits on their first day as apprentices.
Hazestar started to speak, to Pigeonpaw first, and the grey and white cat smirked at Gullpaw, who only groaned.
"I, Hazestar, leader of HazeClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. They have trained hard to understand our ways, and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn. Pigeonpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Pigeonpaw's answer came as easy as breathing.
"I do."
She didn't hear what Hazestar said next, and Gullpawecho has to tell her the name she's been given - Pigeonwhisper.
HazeClan has two new warriors to swell their ranks!
x→ Beekit bounces up and down at the base of a high rock, his pelt ruffling in excitement. Hazestar smiles down at the excitable tom but clears his throat when the kit seems to not be paying attention.
"Beekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Beepaw. Your mentor will be Bearclaw. I hope Bearclaw will pass down all she knows on to you."
The other apprentices welcomed Beepaw with broad smiles and kind words, and after wrapping up the ceremony, Hazestar climbs down off the High Rock.
Beekit becomes Beepaw and is apprenticed to Bearclaw.

𝚔𝚒𝚝𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐
→ Koisplash's labour comes a little sooner than anticpated, which sends the already tense medicine cats into a panic.
"Applepaw!" Ashfang shouts.
"Yes?"
"Raspberry leaves! Chervil!"
"On it!"
The calico apprentice sprints off to the medicine den to grab the herbs, and anxiously sets them beside the queen.
As it turned out, to their pleasent surprise, they didn't need the herbs, and Applepaw took them back to the den while her mentors fussed over the kits and checked them both over.
Deciding that they were okay, Twigstorm sat back and sighed.
At least one thing was going right, he thought.
Koisplash gives birth to two healthy kits!
→ It's late into the evening when Daisytip calls in the medicine cats. They're much more prepared this time, and although their pelts are fluffed out in worry as they always are during kittings, the whole thing goes by smoothly and without much hassle, especially considering the fact that Daisytip only has a single kit, which is unusual, but a lot less stressful than when queens have long births with moe kits.
Daisytip looks over her kit, and givs them a uick grooming before slipping into sleep beside the ginger ball of fluff.
Daisytip gives birth to one healthy kit!

→ All three medicine cats are preoccupied with the prophecy as they slink through the territory, searching for herbs (or signs, omens, warnings, but they don't say that out loud.)
"What do you think it means?" Applepaw asks her mentor, her tail flicking back and owrth.
"I'm... I'm not sure."
Applepaw huffs.
"But you're fully trained!"
"I don't know."
It's sobering, Applepaw thinks, that the fully grown and fully trained medicine cat has no idea what the prophecy means.
"How do you usually figure it out?"
Twigstorm's tail flicks back in surprise.
"Well..."
They talk about signs, omens, and prophecies for the rest of the patrol. Ashfang is the only one who brings something back - two thyme, but he doesn't seem to mind.
They're all still preoccupied with the prophecy when they get back to camp. None of them sleep.
Ashfang, Twigstorm, and Applepaw find x2 thyme. Applepaw learns to understand omens and prophecies!
x→ Honeypool's claws hook into a tree as the ginger and white tom hauls himself up, closer to the squirrel. He yanks himself onto the branch the squirrel is perched on and finds himself shaking on the narrow thing.
It'll be okay if you fall. There's so much snow!
And so, without worrying, he goes for the kill.
The squirrel shrieks and darts out of the way, He lunges forward once more, and his claws hook into the squirrel's pelt, and when he stumbles off the branch they both fall into the snow below. Honeypool lands somewhat nimbly - no injuries to speak of, at least.
He pulls himself out of the snow with the squirrel in his claws.
I hope nobody saw that!
Hazestar, Littleflame, Juniperclaw, Brackengaze, Honeypool, and Dappledwillow catch x1 squirrel, x1 bird, and x1 stoat.
xx→ Shadowripple's tail flicked back and forth with a distinct air of irritability. She'd attempted to catch two squirrels already, and had failed both times. Now, perched on the branch in front of her was a pretty robin.
She thought it a shame to kill such a pretty creature, but the clan had to eat.
So, her claws skidded across the bark as she lept, her claws yanking up the bark like upturned nails. The bid was in her jaws, and she landed nimbly on the branch with a mouthful of feathers. (She was none too ecstatic about that.) She shimmied her way down the branch to the ground and nimbly jumped down before trotting over to join the rest of the patrol.
Shadowripple, Sootpelt, Reefpool, Panthertuft, Sandfire, and Aspencreek catch x1 bird and x1 rabbit.
xxx→ Rabbits were not easy to catch, Lichenpelt thought as he zipped through the territory, circling around trees and bounding over bushes in pursuit of the furry pest.
He was too focused on the bush he was jumping over, too focused on the leaves and the wind and if the rabbit would get away, and so when he sprinted along, he felt a sudden twitch in his whiskers and then -
Bam!
He rammed into a tree.
The black tom was dazed for several moments before standing up on shaky legs, only to see Swivelspear duck out of the bushes with the very same rabbit in her jaws.
She let out a mrrow of laughter.
Lichpelt grumbled.
Feathermist, Batwing, Lichenpelt, Pumapounce, Swivelspear, and Ospreytalon catch x2 stoats and x1 rabbit
xxxx→ Sheeppelt held her head high in the air, sniffing out for any prey-scents. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a squirrel and told her patrolmates about the slim creature rooting around in the snow.
Rainsong nodded, the blue tom's eyes focused.
"Shall we go after it simultaneously? Should be easier, in case it runs away?"
Sheeppelt nodded briskly at the older warrior. Yes, that made sense.
Except they bolted off in different directions.
And they both came back with squirrels.
"Oh, I thought you were talking about-"
They spoke simultaneously.
They had a good, hearty laugh about that.
Rainsong, Marshpool, Timberfall, Tansypetal, Sheeppelt, and Larksong catch x2 squirrels.
xxxxx→ Raveneyes shoves his muzzle into a mouse burrow.
It's objectively not his best idea.
Heatherflame laughs at him.
There are curse words involved.
At least he catches it, but he huffs in exasperation before burying the mouse and heading up a tree after he hears a faint chirping. He strains his ears to catch the sound, and a smile spreads across his face when he spots a sparrow a few branches up.
He catches it quite easily, and scrambles down the tree to boast about it to Heatherflame.
She grooms herself.
"You still shoved your face into a mouse's burrow."
"Oh, shush."
Inkfire, Raveneyes, Meadowhawk, Maplebreeze, Heatherflame, and Mottlesplash catch x1 mouse and x1 bird.
xxxxxx→ Heronstrike wound around a tree, and bounced over a very small stream, stumbling over her own paws before continuing.
Her heart raced and her blood roared in her ears and for one moment she thought she'd lost sight of the rabbit but it wound around the tree in front of her, and so she wasn't allowed even a second to catch her breath.
She wasn't sure how long she ran for, exactly, only that it was exhilarating, and that there was little else more satisfying than catching difficult prey.
Wrenfeather, Oakfang, Bearclaw, Willowstripe, Fernclover, and Heronstrike catch x1 rabbit and x1 vole.
xxxxxxx→ Badgerstrike, Emberspark, Adderstrike, Brightgaze, Cloudripple, and Pineshade have an uneventful patrol.
