Shame pricked at her eyes and Newtpaw found herself sniffling again - The tortoiseshell had known she'd tried her best, had wanted to try her best and yet that wasn't enough in Shadowfang's eyes. Upon returning to camp, the large black tom had simply stared at her with weary eyes, as though she were a troublesome kit. Shadowfang had said nothing, and yet the silence was more cutting than any word.
Her misery didn't go unnoticed by the three healers, peering at her from the opposite side. ''Oh, she looks devastated.'' Trouttail clucked, rambling about how miserable Newtpaw looked and how tearful she was. It seemed all so much just for a hunting session and the grey tabby couldn't believe how sad the little tortoiseshell was. Only moments ago, she'd been so excited to be training. ''What did Shadowfang say to her?'' Trouttail inquired, unable to fathom what could've happened. ''He must've been horrible.''
''He didn't say anything, which is worse.'' Smallwhisker chimed in. ''She looks so miserable.'' She mused, although the mottled she-cat made no attempt to calm down Newtpaw - Mending wounds, physical wounds was more her forte. Emotional wounds? Smallwhisker had scarcely a clue how one navigated such matters without accidentally hurting the cat in question. ''I'm gonna get some sage, that might calm her down.'' That had worked for Smallwhisker in the past, especially after Nightclaw had died.
The third healer, a large battle-scarred tom, had begun to approach Newtpaw. ''Don't worry.'' Lampreypelt murmured, poking the apprentice softly. ''It happens to the best of us, and you'll have a second chance.'' The brown tabby sank slowly to his belly, letting out a tired sigh. Scars as pale as chalk and as wide as the thunderpath crisscrossed over his pelt, tapestries illustrating a bloody history - Mistakes scored into pale skin, unremovable. ''I've had my fair share of mistakes too, everyone has.''
''Even Shadowfang?'' Newtpaw croaked, frowning. The large black tom was an impressive sight and his stony facade gave nothing away, although some cats claimed that really he was a big softy - Newtpaw now thought they had said that just to ease any fears she may have had about the intimidating cat. It was difficult to imagine him embarrassed. ''Don't lie to me.'' Newtpaw added.
Chuckling softly, Lampreypelt shook his head adamantly. ''Oh, trust me.'' He grinned, leaning in like a naughty kit sharing some untold secret. ''Everyone here has made a mistake, including me.'' Lampreypelt motioned to his pelt. ''Look at me, I'm covered in scars and most of them? Not from heroic or successful battles, believe me.'' Sitting up, the healer pointed to a large scar on his chest. ''This was when I ran into a rock.'' He remarked, rather proudly. ''I was trying to impress a girl I liked.''
Staring at Lampreypelt in surprise, Newtpaw's jaw dropped and she couldn't help but raise her head, interested. ''What? How?'' The dark molly gabbled, shaking her head in disbelief. ''Why? Why would running into a rock impress anyone?'' For the first time, Newtpaw was beginning to take notice of the scars on Lampreypelt's fur and with each new one she spotted, Newtpaw began to wonder how a healer had gotten all those - Did his old clan maltreat him? Was that why he left? Disgusted by cats that she never knew, Newtpaw stared up at Lampreypelt with a newfound respect.
''I was trying to do a backflip, which kinda backfired.'' Lampreypelt sighed, shaking his head softly. ''She was so beautiful...'' Recalling a pelt of night and stars, Lampreypelt couldn't help but obtain a somewhat dreamy expression - Such was his dream that he hardly noticed Newtpaw staring at him oddly ''My point is that everyone makes mistakes, and that's okay.'' Lampreypelt hummed, smiling at the tortoiseshell. ''You feeling better yet? Is that smile back on that pretty face of yours?'' The tabby chuckled softly.
''Yeah, thanks.''
Everyone makes mistakes. And that's okay.

Beetlestep was dragged out of the shadows, covered in weeds that writhed as though alive. Still dripping with murky water, the black cat looked around dazedly, as though lost in a foggy quagmire or woken up from a dream so vivid that reality and imagination embraced for one terrible second. The will-o-wisps were nowhere to be seen, now that grey-light flickered through the shaggy pines - And yet you could tell they were close by. It was the way the air hummed, the way that if you looked in a certain way the air seemed to shimmer despite the frost in the breeze. Throat sore, Beetlestep could only manage three words.
''Where am I?''
The patrol hovered uneasily, watching the young molly trembling on scabbed paws - She'd obviously tripped and fallen, but what had brought her so far from camp? In the middle of the night, in a strange forest, no less? Briarcloud stared anxiously at the foggy tendrils as dangerous as snares - He had no answer for Beetlestep except for 'home'. Except this wasn't really home, not yet anyway. The woods was primal and dangerous, its heart as dark as it was ancient. ''Come on, Beetlestep, your friends were worried sick about you.'' Was all that the deputy chose to say, sighing deeply. ''Lets get you looked after.''
A fleeting figure disappeared into a patch of celandine, the flowers shivering at winter's touch. ''Did you see that, Garlicstar?'' Whispered Bramblefur, whiskers twitching with agitation. An otherwise beautiful clearing, freckled with primrose and mistletoe was somehow full of an ugly monstrosity - The trees loomed at every hand, faces in the bark sneering as the patrol passed. ''StarClan, why did we end up here of all places?'' Hissed Bramblefur, hunkering close to Briarcloud's shoulders. ''Couldn't we have gone somewhere nicer?'' The woods didn't want him here and he didn't want to be here - The feeling was quite mutual.
''I saw it.'' And she'd tried to ignore it, eyes staring down the mud between her paws. ''I hope it was just a trick of light.'' Garlicstar replied pointedly, her jaw set with a quiet anger - Could MoorClan ever stop suffering? Or was it going to continuously run into trouble time and time again? Just today a warrior went missing and a mother was found dead near ClayClan's border. Another figure ran past, darting into a flock of fly agaric, flickering and shimmering like river froth. Garlicstar let out a growl and walked faster, ignoring Bramblefur's complaint. She hadn't chosen the woods, it had chosen her and they could not leave.
Be cautious, curiosity kills.

The mill creaked softly, moaning under years of woodrot and termites. A cluster of pine trees trembled before the stony sides, like soldiers at the mercy of their cut-throat captain. Although there was nothing here particularly haunting, the ravens that clustered hungrily in the dark trees did make one wonder if they knew something that they didn't. Coal-black eyes watched the patrol emerge from the tree-line, following the trio as they approached the ivy-bound mill. Ragged sails hovered in the air, no wind to yet fuel their purpose. With a witch-like cry, the ravens exploded forth and disappeared into the dark with a raucous scream. The clearing was full of a hollow feeling, as if something had been taken. A life? A purpose? A heart? Who knew?
But of course, Waxwing reasoned nervously, that was all in his head. Right?
''Look alive.'' Dawnpool murmured softly, lilac-grey tail brushing the leaves from the ground. ''I heard those ravens, we don't want to be long.'' Her voice was as cool as a frozen lake but that icy sheen was just a facade, for she could not deny the worries that flailed around like drowning bodies in black water. ''I don't think Beetlestep is here unfortunately.'' The warrior may not have been able to see, but she could very well sense Waxwing's disappointment - He had voiced his concerns quite loudly on the journey.
''Sorry.''
Waxwing sighed dejectedly, shaking his head softly. ''Not your fault, Dawnpool.'' The ginger tabby felt a sharp pain in his heart, as though someone had clawed his chest to ribbons - It was a harrowing feeling, losing your best friend and so soon after escaping peril too. ''With a forest this big, she was bound to disappear.'' Waxwing sniffed, coughing quietly. ''Just wished it wasn't so soon.'' His blue eyes shone with misery, brimming until it was bound to overflow. ''Just wished she got to say bye and have kits with Mag.''
''Well, that's a shame!'' Piped up a silver-muzzled tom. ''But don't weep, that disturbs the fae.'' Hauling himself into the top-most branches of a withered sapling, he sighed loudly and peered at them as though they were lost kits. ''You're mighty far from the tower, I didn't know anyone lived out here.'' The pale tom seemed almost perplexed, watching them with glass-blue eyes. ''And you.'' He faced Yarrowshine, a sneer under his frost-tipped whiskers. ''You're not one of them, are you?''
The forest seemed to lean in, curious about the answer. The leaves twitched and fluttered with anticipation, like chained swallows. The old mill creaked and clanked softly to itself, old stories of a senile ghost - Nobody said anything, watching the other like a hawk. The clouds came and went, and the forest was at a standstill, breaths held in non-existent lungs.
Yarrowshine stared coolly at the tomcat, a moon-white figure before him. ''Iceheart, I didn't expect to see you again.'' She approached him quietly, drifting through the brittle grass, wraithlike before him. ''I thought they would never let you come here.'' Yarrowshine murmured, cocking her head to the side. ''Did they get tired of you and send you here to bother us?'' She inquired.
Iceheart looked impressed, hunched over a bough of dying leaves. ''You didn't deny the stars in your fur?'' He chirped, sliding softly to the ground and approaching Yarrowshine with long, slow strides. ''That's a first in a long, long time...'' Iceheart gave a vulpine smile, looking as though he had all the time in the world. The stars could've crumbled right then, the earth could've disappeared in a swathe of raging fire and Iceheart would not care - The clock ticked only for him. ''But I'm not here for you.'' Voice dropping to a whisper so soft it barely disturbed the tips of the grass below. ''I'm here for Heronclaw and Sparrowtail.''
Things are not always as they seem. Pay attention.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sprawled across a rot-eaten log, Magpiefeather could not muster the energy to move and she could only watch the owl as it peered through her - Yellow eyes were as wide as suns, burning through the black and white molly. It did not blink once. ''Fogwhisker...'' Magpiefeather's voice was hoarse, her brush-tail curling around her paws. ''...Have you ever been heartbroken?''
A ridiculous question, of course but Fogwhisker took it in stride. ''Yeah, it happens.'' The grey warrior replied softly, paws treading lightly on brittle leaves. The ache in the chest was a familiar feeling, and not always a pleasant one - It was sharp and cruel and cut like broken glass. ''I know how you feel.'' Fogwhisker whispered, touching her nose to Magpiewhisker's shoulder. ''It's the worst feeling in the world.'' Her motherly instincts kicked in when Magpiewhisker let out a painful-sob and Fogwhisker pulled her in for a hug.
Linnettail hovered on the edges, unable to figure some way of aiding Magpiewhisker. Emotions were never particularly the tabby's forte and she preferred to stay out of issues for the better part. You could never trust someone incapable of articulating their own feelings to help another through theirs - There was always the risk of hurt associated with that. Tail twitching, the skinny molly nosed quietly through the undergrowth. With leafbare approaching with it's howling gales and whispering frosts, Linnettail figured it would not hurt to try and rustle up some mice or something. Snuffling through the dark-green ferns, Linnettail recoiled suddenly.
A stranger!
''Who are you?'' Linnettail snapped, fur bristling. With the strange happenings around the woods, she had little patience for mysterious cats sneaking up to them and appearing out of nowhere like the wraiths themselves. ''And are you a threat?'' Linnettail's bright eyes glimmered with a subtle rage, tail lashing like a whip. ''Be honest, please.''
The grey tom purred softly, smiling sweetly at Linnettail. ''I'm Juniper.'' His startling-amber eyes slid over the trio like honey, taking in every part of them, from the way they held their tails to the tips of their noses. ''And you are Linnettail, Fogwhisker and Magpiefeather?'' Juniper beamed at them, as though greeting old friends. ''Pleasure to meet you!''
Staring incredulously at this cheerful tomcat, Fogwhisker snarled. ''How did you know our names?'' The large and lean molly turned to face him, shaking her head sternly. ''You do know that it is most unsavory to stalk she-cats or anyone in particular?'' Fogwhisker's teeth were bared, tail hung high over her head like a bristling, silvery, thorn bush. ''Explain yourself.''
Watching Magpiefeather rising to her paws slowly, a beauty dressed in black, Juniper almost missed Fogwhisker's venomous snarl. ''I just guessed, that's all.'' The stone-grey tom seemed unbowed, watching Fogwhisker as though she were merely a tad frustrated. ''I hear you lot are clan-cats, that's so cool.'' Juniper grinned, bouncing lightly on his paws. ''I wanna join!'' He gabbled, shaking his head softly. ''I've learned about that code you keep, about the ranks, about...about everything!'' And yet, he chose to meet Magpiefeather's eyes, staring deep into them. ''Please, I wanna join, I even gave myself a warrior name!''
Fogwhisker's eyes remained as steely as ever. ''Fine, what is it?'' She inquired, through grit teeth.
