▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔“autumnkit! littlekit! get back here this instant! brindlepelt snapped. the two kits spun around to face their mother. “you kits are absolutely not going to your ceremony looking like that!” she meowed, rushing over. the molly began to groom her two kits, rolling her eyes when littlekit began complaining, “mom! we’ll be late!”. when her mother didn’t reply, littlekit sighed in annoyance, receiving a glare from her mother. “no cat will want to mentor messy and impatient apprentices, now will they?” she asked, her tone threatening them to argue.
when the kits looked well enough, they were just in time. “may all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the high-tree for a clan meeting!” froststar’s call rang throughout the camp. “alright, go ahead. walk like you’re a well-disciplined apprentice, not a reckless kit, please.” brindlepelt sighed, love in her eyes. her two beautiful kits were going to be apprentices. as the two walked, heads high out into the camp, brindlepelt stared after them happily. “momma! momma! can we go watch autumnkit and littlekit’s ceremomy?” lionkit begged, stumblekit and sparkkit modding. “oh, i suppose, but you must behave! only speak when the clan says their names, am i clear?” dawnlight meowed, only a hint of sternness in her voice. the trio nodded, scampering after autumnkit and littlekit. heaving herself up, dawnlight jogged after her kits, stopping by brindlepelt with a smile. “they’ll be fine apprentices.” she murmured soothingly, seeing the nervous look brindlepelt had. “i know, they will. i just worry for them, but i suppose i can’t keep them kits forever.” the molly sighed, trotting out of the den. dawnlight nodded before padding out into the crowd, settling down next to her kits and their father. behind them, sandsnarl and emberspark trailer behind, each round with kits.
“hello, little ones!” grayleap meowed happily to his kits. all three of them looked like their mother, but he could see each of their different personalities. lionkit took after his name, brave and proud. sparkkit was sweet, but she always had that spark of curiosity. stumblekit, as his name suggested, was a clumsy kit, but he was also meek. “hi papa!” they grinned. “i can’t wait to be an apprentice someday!” lionkit meowed, looking longingly at autumnkit and littlekit as their mother gave them a quick pep-talk. “you’ll be great apprentices someday.” their father assured them. “but for now, you have to stay in the nursery. every apprentice born into a clan has to.” he added.
“autumnkit, please step forward.” froststar began as her clan quieted down. “autumnkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as autumnpaw.” she meowed, turning to a certain warrior who she decided shall mentor the young apprentice. “greengaze, you are ready to take on an apprentice. you have shown yourself to be loyal and skillful. you will be the mentor of autumnpaw, and i expect you to pass on all you know to autumnpaw.” froststar finished. greengaze looked very surprised, but she padded over to the new apprentice and touched noses with her. “i’ll be the best apprentice ever!” autumnpaw promised. “i’ll do my best to be the best mentor.” greengaze smiled. the two cats trotted off to the front of the crowd, sitting down by eachother. autumnpaw’s ears were forward and alert as she waited for her sister’s ceremony to begin.
“littlekit, please step forward.” froststar started again. “littlekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. from this day on, until you receive your full name, you will be known as littlepaw.” she meowed. “littlepaw, you have shown that you hope to be a medicine cat, and bluesky is ready for an apprentice.” froststar meowed, turning to a bluesky. “bluesky, you are ready to take on an apprentice. you have shown yourself to be an skillful and intelligent medicine cat. you will be the mentor of littlepaw, and i expect you to pass on all you know to littlepaw.” froststar finished. littlepaw’s eyes were bright with pride as she trotted to her mentor, touching noses with the tom. “i’ll take you to the wishwall tonight to present you to starclan.” bluesky smiled. littlekit nodded, following bluesky to sit by her sister and greengaze. the clan was silent for a moment, but they soon broke out into joyful cheers. “autumnpaw! littlepaw! autumnpaw! littlepaw!” the clan cheered. autumnkit day up proudly and littlepaw blushed with embarrassment. the two gazed around the clan, each seeing their once denmates, lionkit, sparkkit, and stumblekit, cheering louder than ever. the two apprentices smiled as the cheering continued, looking back to froststar as the cheers died down. “as leaf-bare begins, prey becomes scarce. with that being said, we’ll need every warrior working their best for hunting. marigoldstep, please send two hunting parties out today and two patrols, we’re going to need it.” she meowed before signaling the meeting was over.
“greengaze! fallowfur! canyoncry! orangeray!” marigoldstep’s voice called. greengaze looked up from speaking with her apprentice before padding over, and the other three came from different directions as they came over “greengaze. i’d like you to lead a hunting party. fallowfur, you aswell. each of you may choose the cats who accompany you.” marigoldstep informed them. “canyoncry, orangeray, i’d like you each to lead a border patrol. choose your cats.” she meowed. the four nodded and headed off to find cats to accompany them.
autumnpaw frowned as her sister left to view the medicine den. she felt alone without the crowded nursery already. she didn’t know any of the apprentices well, and she barely knew all of the warriors’ names! flustered, autumnpaw began to groom herself, surprised when she was approached by stonepaw. embarrassed she hadn’t said anything to him, she smiled and stood up. “congratulations, autumnpaw.” he smiled. autumnpaw blushed as his congrats, laughing. “thanks, but i haven’t even learned anything yet!” she meowed. stonepaw laughed, giving her a friendly bat at the ear. “you aren’t going to learn anything in one heartbeat!” he teased. “i suppose.” autumnpaw chuckled. ever since the nursery, autumnpaw had liked stonepaw. as a friend, of course, but she also loved him. of course, she wouldn’t admit it, but what couldn’t she like? he was handsome, kind, talented, and everything else! stonepaw looked around before back to autumnpaw with a sigh. “so your mentor’s on patrol too?” he meowed. autumnpaw nodded. “guess i’m stuck in camp with you!” he smirked. “oh shut up!” autumnpaw meowed with a playful eye roll.
sunnypaw was happily chatting with birchface on the other side of camp. “you’re so lucky to be a warrior! i hope i’ll get my assessment soon, marigoldstep said maybe next moon, but probably the moon after that.” sunnypaw frowned. “hey! at least you won’t be becoming a warrior when your almost as old as all your warrior clanmates!” birchface exclaimed. “i guess, but i wish we could spend time together! you’re always busy as a
warrior!” sunnypaw whined. birchface frowned, looking up. “i guess i am, and i honk im being summoned on patrol.” he meowed. “i’ve gotta go, bye sunnypaw!” birchface called. “bye!” sunnypaw called sadly. sunnypaw had a crush aswell, but not on a molly, on birchface. the two got along very well, and sunnypaw adored the older tom.
canyoncry, orchiddapple, patchedmask exited camp, ready for their patrol. patchedmask has felt bad leaving stonepaw, but he promised he’d train the tom later. the patrol was normal so far, as usual. dewclan never really ran into any bordering clans, and even though it sounded exciting, patchedmask most certainly didn’t want to get in a fight. just as they thought it would be another normal patrol, as they jogged through the forest towards the border, patchedmask shivered in the cold weather. it was nearing leaf-bare, and patchedmask was certainly not looking forward to it.
patchedmask was broken off from his thoughts as they spotted a patrol of twistedclan cats, patrolling their border. patchedmask blinked in surprise, staring at them. he’d never seen another clan, nor did he expect to today.
"i’m assuming this is dewclan?" a cat meowed, narrowing her eyes. "well, i guess this is better than stumbling across the dogs from our eastern border." the cat meowed to the twistedclan patrol. orchiddapple raised an eyebrow as the cat carelessly revealed their clan’s troubles. rolling her eyes, orchiddapple looked back to her “patchedmask, orchiddapple, come on. we have no time for these cats. froststar will want us back soon.” canyoncry meowed, glancing warily at the twistedclan cats before continuing on.
curiously, patchedmask looked at the cats, a pretty spotted molly catching his eye. he looked back towards his patrol, curious as to why they ignored the cats. making friends couldn’t do any harm, right? allies was better than enemies. besides, there was nothing patchedmask noticed that was different about these cats besides their scent. despite both living in the forest, twistedclan smelled...
different. they were just other cats, not a terrible threat, right? the patrol of twistedclan cats had moved away, but patchedmask remained where he was, distracted from his patrol.
"hello?" a caty called. patchedmask was slightly startled as he snapped out of his thoughts. patchedmask looked up, surprised to see the twistedclan molly he was looking at earlier. "sorry!" the molly meowed, looking at the ground. "i didn't mean to startle you!" she apologized. “hello? it’s ok!” he assured her, smiling. “are you a twistedclan cat? what’s your name?” he asked curiously. “i’m patchedmask, a dewclan warrior.” he said with pride. “although, i wasn’t born in dewclan.” he added. “what about you?” he meowed, speaking quickly. noticing his speed-talking, he chuckled. “sorry, it’s exciting meeting a new clan cat! i never met someone from another clan before.” he admitted.
the two cats chattered for awhile, seeming to forget about their clan-life. the molly seemed slightly wary, but patchedmask took no notice. "i’m rainsong of twistedclan. i found them when i was just an apprentice." rainsong meowed, checking once more that she had lost her patrol for sure. "this is the first we've really seen another group of cats around here. we usually keep to ourselves." she shrugged. "it is nice meeting other cats though." she ended shyly. the tom nodded in agreement. “so does dewclan. we haven’t spoken to any other clan, at least that i know of.” he meowed, glancing to his sides for any sign of his patrol returning. after a moment of silence, rainsong spoke again, "am i keeping you from anything?" “not much, besides my patrol.” he meowed. “it’s nice to have a friend - i mean, someone to talk to.” he meowed. “i’m pretty extroverted myself, but not many of my clanmates seem to take much notice to me. i guess i chat too much?” he said with a shrug. within dewclan, cats seemed to had their small friend group, no one else. patchedmask, unfortunately, didn’t have one of those. there wasn’t really anyone in the clan that was extroverted like him, besides sunnypaw, but the apprentice seemed too busy mooning over birchface to be his friend. “it was really nice meeting you. maybe we could.. meet again?” he meowed nervously. a cross-clan relationship wasn’t good, but if they were just friends, nothing could go wrong, right? no, friends can trust eachother. soon, rainsong’s reply came, "i think i would enjoy that. and i don't think you talk too much at all." she meowed as she met his different colored eyes. they both smiled. "right now things are pretty tense in twistedclan. it’s nice to get away from everything once in a while." she tilted her head. was it her imagination or were there footsteps faintly approaching? "where should we meet again, patchedmask? around here at the border?" her voice lowered a bit, but no one appeared through the trees yet. the tom smiled at the molly’s reply, happy. he wanted to speak more, but approaching footsteps made him stiffen. he glanced to the side, quickly nodding at her reply. “yes, we can meet here.” he meowed, rushed. “goodbye!” he whispered before quickly padding away, flashing a smile to the molly from behind him.
as he continued, he spotted orchiddapple and canyoncry going towards the border. when the two were both out of his sight, patchedmask spotted a mouse not far in front of him. quickly, he crouched, creeping forward before luckily, but barely catching it. “thank you, starclan.” he whispered. if they didn’t want us to meet, they would be angry, not letting me catch anything. it must be a sign that it’s ok. he thought before rushing towards orchiddapple and canyoncry. the two glared at him, canyoncry stepping forward. “where in starclan’s name have you been?” she demanded, her gaze stern. “a cat from twistedclan stayed behind and tried to chat, but i warned them and they left. then, i caught this.” he meowed, lifting his chin to show off his catch. “sorry.” he added. canyoncry rolled her eyes before the cats continued on, not speaking. patchedmask sighed in relief before following.
froststar jogged out of camp, pacing restlessly. things were too calm in dewclan, too happy. was starclan saying something terrible was coming? no, surely not.. but they might! froststar was thtinkining rapidly, eyes wide with fear. what would happen? something terrible? froststar shookher head, clearly flustered. the leader decided she needed to take a walk, walking quickly out into the territory, careful to avoid any patrols or hunting parties. as froststar walked, she seemed distracted. however, she jumped out of her thoughts when she heard low, unfamiliar murmurs. “who’s there?” froststar demanded, voice stern. at the very moment, a young molly and an older molly exited a bush. “greetings, froststar.” the older molly meowed. “who are you?” froststar meowed, eyes narrowed. how did these cats know her, and who were they? “i’m yellowstorm, and this is reedpaw. we were loners, but we wish to join a clan. then, i had a dream of a starry cat telling me about dewclan, and it seems as if reedpaw had the same dream.” the older molly meowed. reedpaw nodded, glancing side-to-side. “they told us that our names should be yellowstorm and reedpaw.” the young molly added. yellowstorm nodded. still confused, but trusting he two cats more now hat she knew starclan sent them, froststar looked at the two cats. “dewclan will welcome you if you promise to uphold our code and follow our rules.” froststar meowed, going over the warrior code. the two exchanged an alarmed glance, reedpaw leaning in before whispering, “how am i going to memorize all of this?”. ignoring her comment, froststar finished. “well?” she prompted. “ok. i agree.” yellowstorm meowed. “yes, so do i.” reedpaw agreed. “well then, follow me to your new camp.”
“cats of dewclan!” froststar’s meow was loud and clear. she’d just called a meeting to announce the new clanmates she found. “starclan has sent us a worthy warrior and apprentice, it seems.” froststar meowed, glancing to yellowstorm and reedpaw. “reedpaw, please step forward.” froststar called. “reedpaw, you have joined our clan at the age of seven moons, and it as you wish, you will be trained in dewclan. from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as reedpaw.” she meowed, turning to quailstep. “quailstep, you are ready to take on an apprentice. you have shown yourself to be a quick-thinker and a fiercely loyal warrior. you will be the mentor of reedpaw, and i expect you to pass on all you know to reedpaw.” froststar finished. quailstep blinked, seeming to not believe what he heard. after a moment, the tom stood and confidently padded to his new apprentice. reedpaw looked around, joining the tom. knowing she didn’t know what to do, quailstep whispered, “we are to touch noses now.”. reedpaw gave a curt nod before touching her nose to his. “welcome to dewclan.” her mentor greeted her. the two trotted back to the crowd, sitting beside eachother. “yellowstorm, you shall be welcomed into dewclan as a warrior.” froststar meowed, starting to chant the new cats’ names. “yellowstorm! reedpaw! yellowstorm! reedpaw!” the clan chanted, though some voices were slightly doubtful.
as the night came, cats were very tired. it was an eventful day, but bluesky stood, awake. “it’s time, littlepaw.” he meowed, gently prodding her with a paw. the apprentice had taken a nap and bluesky allowed her to sleep until now, not wanting her to be exhausted for the journey. “froststar will be accompanying us to speak with starclan.” bluesky added. the apprentice stirred, yawning before getting to her paws. dazed with sleep, there apprentice nodded. bluesky spotted froststar padding over, a hint of worry in her eyes. “i’m ready.” she meowed.
when the theee cats arrived at the wishwall, they were all tired. however, they were inside now and were ready to speak with their ancestors after littlepaw was named his apprentice. “littlepaw, is it your wish to enter the mysteries of starclan as a medicine cat?” bluesky asked. “it is.” littlepaw meowed, gulping with nervousness. “then come forward.” bluesky meowed, his voice calm. littlepaw did as asked and stared at the wall with water flowing down. “warriors of starclan, i present you with this apprentice. she has chosen the path of a medicine cat. grant her your wisdom and insight so that she may understand your ways and heal her clan in accordance with your will.” bluesky finished, touching noses with littlepaw. waving his tail, he signaled for her to come. the two cats lapped the water, the icey taste sending a shiver down littlepaw’s back. after that, he two lay down, froststar doing as each of the others did after they settled down.
