--Hope. The clan reaches a forest as their trek across the mountains end, and something in their hearts tells them that this is their new home. Patrols are sent to scout out the area while Cicadastar makes sure that most cats settle down to rest for a while now that they are out of the harsh terrain.
--Mockingbirdcry's group meets back up with Cicadastar, though Raptorstar has now gone missing, sneaking off in the middle of the night to go find some of the cats he knew got lost - particularly a small group of apprentices of Fudgepaw, Dandelionpaw, and Lotuspaw. He refuses to leave them behind, knowing in his heart that they are alive and in need of help. Twigstorm reaches out a starry paw, guiding his old nemesis as best he can through the snowy conditions. The leader finds the apprentices hurt, but alive.
--Eveningrain, Morningdew, and their patrol return to the main group with bright eyes, excitably chattering about an abandoned structure the clan could settle in. A light in the darkness, the clan moves forward with newfound energy towards this structure, and Cicadastar has Cascadefreckle by her side as she realizes this place really could be their new home.

- there is a definite shift in tone as highgarden enters a new era. tawnyrose meets with cherryfire, bluetcrest, and birchflame to discuss naming generals to the clan as a new rank. bluetcrest is initially hesitant, as he worries that it will worry the clan and send signals that this will be a long and tedious affair. however, the others ultimately agree to continue considering it. bluetcrest also worries about cherryfire's misplaced energy into the war, and he marks the difference between peace leaders and war leaders

- ravenpaw struggles with the practical herbalist training, but continues to excel in dreamwalking. he watches a bird fly before it lands on a branch. there seems to be a connection between ravenpaw and the strange bird, but it flies off when shadowpaw tries to jump at it. after shaking the moment off, ravenpaw joins the other thorns and they have a bonding moment

- tawnyrose and bluetcrest goes to softglow and yewbloom following the attack on birchflame's patrol, and they reminiscence on simpler times. she expresses her wish that it would end without bloodshed, but no one is optimistic. they play with softglow's kits and worry for the future, while tawnyrose tells them about the idea of generals, and she looks to them for advice on who would work well in these positions

- meanwhile, foxtrot is enlisted to lead a group of senior knights and roses to the direction of the rogue group and other important landmarks that could be useful. during this time, they cross paths with specklefang and beetlewing, who have been looking for foxtrot. after much deliberation, foxtrot manages to convince the patrol to take them back to highgarden. at the mention of swallowclan, tawnyrose is willing to hear them out, and she offers them a new home in exchange for any additional information they might have

- cherryfire goes to speak with erasmus, and is shocked to see the wilted training, with several others pitching in to help them. erasmus steps away, and cherryfire asks for his opinion on everything that's going on. erasmus, for once, is entirely earnest as he says that he's never loved highgarden, but spencer is dead and he's come to care for his denmates. he doesn't mind the current state he's in, and doesn't want to be taken over by the rogues. cherryfire wonders aloud if it would be better to leave the valley and find a different home, but erasmus points out the elderly cats and those with families in other clans

- hornetshade tries to bond with all of his kits and gather his family together so they can all be happy together. esp comforting the pineclan crew after their shared trauma

- tawnyrose holds a ceremony for the changing of ranks and announces that there will be a new rank implimented, called wardens. she names rabbitrace as the hunting warden, dippernose as the training warden, daystrike as the battle warden, and sparrowflutter as the scouting warden. the news is met with surprise, but tawnyrose expresses that the ranks are untraditional, but necessary for tough times. afterwards, she approaches veerypath and tells him that she wants him to be a warden for intelligence, and he reluctantly agrees

- as minkslip and dawnflicker guard the camp at night after their ceremony, dark shapes emerge from the shadows, and war has officially come to highgarden

• despite the high tensions surrounding outsiders at this time, highgarden welcomes figspots to join the clan when the friendly loner crosses a patrol's path. when it is clear that figspots is entirely unaware of the rogue group, tawnyrose welcomes the new member to their clan.
• unlike figspots, beetlewing and specklefang from swallowclan are not immediately welcomed into the clan because of their ties to the rogue group. it is only after foxtrot, vervaincloud, and cyprus speak up for the littermates does tawnyrose allow them the chance to join the clan in exchange for information about the rogue group. she hopes that their loyalty and knowledge will help highgarden in the coming moons

the cheribum found by capra's patrol is seen freaking out, repeating over and over again that they had been taking care of a kit, their cousin, and that they had been trying to hunt to feed the kit but that the kit hadn't been where the cheribum left it. capra and her patrol try to calm the cheribum and insist on bringing them to the clan's camp, reporting that it'll be easier for a larger group of cats to find the kit. however, as they arrive at camp, the cheribum catches the scent of the kit and races for the rit zien's den, where the pair are reunited.
