She was surprised to find the tall, snub-nosed man waiting outside her little ramshackle hut and judging it. ''This is awful.'' The stranger murmured, turning to face her with hawk-like eyes. ''Utterly awful, if a sandstorm were to come by now that thing would be blown away.'' Hikmat scowled at him and crossed her arms, lips thinned like strands of dark reed. ''I'm only young!'' She hissed, clinging onto the tattered vulture like a baby would a doll. ''Still, you should have been more careful.'' He tutted, eyeing her catch. ''Good hunt?'' He offered her an unkind smile. ''I'm Bede, and for some reason...the ancestors disturbed me so that I could help you'' He spat the last word like it was a piece of hot meat, singeing his tongue.

The desert wind sang and tousled Hikmat's long hair, like invisible motherly fingers. ''Well I'm sorry that I've never done this before.'' She sighed, shaking her head and rolling her eyes. ''I guess everyone's just born knowing everything and I'm just the stupid one out there.'' Hikmat hoisted the bald-headed vulture over her shoulder and drove her emerald-green eyes into his, as steady as the horizon. ''I'm Bede Courtney'' The man sighed, driving a scabbed hand through his long hair. ''And I guess I'm your shaman.'' Turning to the rubble of pathetically woven branches and leaves, the shaman kicked at it. ''Go and hunt, and I'll make the best hut you've ever seen, little girl.'' Hikmat bristled at the condescending tone. ''Don't call me little girl.'' She died in that fire a long time ago, the thought sent a shiver through Hikmat and ignoring whatever snark her new comrade had, she sulked off.

"Congratulations to our new Masters!" crowed Seanni, lifting her glass.

"Congratulations!" repeated the weyrfolk. Ershar and Jesni looked at each other excitedly, and Borrin and Abesses patted each other on the back. Seanni smiled and glanced at N'reg. The ceremony had been extremely lavish, with crafters from the North coming to bestow the rank of Master upon several of the Black Rock craftsmen. Seanni was extremely proud of her friends, now Masters. It had been only nine turns since the weyr had been founded and yet it had come so far. Now all they needed were more dragons!

"Honor those the dragons heed," recited Eshni. "In thought and favor, word and deed. / Worlds are lost and worlds are saved / From those dangers dragon-braved."

"Very good!" exclaimed Waxinnan. The little child that Jesni had tossed at him was extremely bright, moreso than many he had had to teach (he rather thought that Eshni was about as mature as most of the first settlers' children must have been when they first arrived on Pern, which was to say very), and they had been memorizing some of the Teaching Songs over the past few weeks. "Do you remember the rest?"

"Dragonman," started Eshni, "avoid...ex-ex?" She glanced at Waxinnan, small face bunched up in confusion.

"Avoid excess," he corrected. "Dragonman, avoid excess."

"Greed will bring the Weyr distress!" Eshni said enthusiastically. "To the ancient Laws adhere; / Propsers thus the Dragonweyr!"

"Fantastic! We'll make a Harper of you yet."

"What's a Harper?" asked Eshni.

"It's like me," explained Waxinnan patiently. "We teach the younger generation like you," he said pointing a finger and giving a stern frown. This elicited a giggle from the three-turn-old girl. "And we draw. We write new songs and ballads. We keep the memories of all Pernese history and make sure it never gets lost."

"Could you be a Harper and dragonrider?"

Big ambitions, huh, kid? "Of course you can! Anyone can be a dragonrider."

"Even you?"

"Well. If the dragon chose me, then of course."

Predath enjoyed the feeling of the wind under his wings as he soared through the sky. He and N'reg were finishing checking the borders to the east of Black Rock River, and would soon go to the rendezvous with Rosanth.

"I think that's it," said N'reg. "Looks like Cyrrane down there."

Predath glanced down to see a small dot. It didn't look much like a village, but then he had been born and raised in Black Rock. Redmire Hold certainly looked very different than the weyr.

"Ready to go between?"

Yes. Predath fixed the image in his mind and made the transition. Through his bond with N'reg, he could "hear" his partner counting down the seconds until they burst out into the chilly air.

"So where did you come from?" Abesses asked Nitia, giving her a sidelong glance.

"Benden Hold," replied Nitia stiffly, bending down to ruffle Chase's ears. The canine was getting old, and Seanni had cooperated with Mournstead to breed their canines before their time ran out.

"What's wrong with Benden?" Abesses rather liked the hold. He had been there are few times and had always enjoyed a good bottle of Benden wine. Those wines were considered luxury items around Pern and it was only thanks to Seanni's connections that they had been able to get it without the extremely high price it was normally sold at.

"Nothing," said Nitia with a sigh. "It's just... Benden Weyr is where all the heroes come from and everyone seems to expect the same from the hold. Benden and Ruatha both."

Abesses snorted. "No one cares where you came from," he said, "once you arrive at Black Rock. It's a whole new start here. I promise."

Sultan could hear Halisi's painful shouts, but he could also hear her shouting demands at Zakia, Rashida, and Imara. He knew he had to distract himself from this, so he started with the patrols he would be sending out.
"Ayo!" He called the scout, his voice booming over the bustle of the camp.
"Yes sir, yes sir?" The smaller man questioned, a wide smile across his face.
"Anything to report?" He questioned.
"Oh! Yes, me and Imara found some animal tracks. Might be a good pet for the village, good for help around with things." Ayo told him, his grin growing along the way with excitement.
"Hm... Good idea, take Imara along with you and follow the tracks. If it's a dangerous animal, don't even try bringing it back." Sultan ordered, watching him and his sister leave. Before he could even start thinking again, Chanua came up to him, her belly large with pregnancy.
"I'll go out with Umoja and Mshindi to help with tracking, they'll need as much help as they can get." Chanua told him, not really asking.
Despite the disrespect, he had to agree with the huntress. "Well, don't push yourself too hard, won't be good for the baby." He told her, a little bit worried for the young mother. "No hunting, only tracking." Sultan added.
She simply nodded, going off.
"Hey! Make the patrol wait a bit, I'll be joining you guys!" Sultan called after her.
He saw Dalila with Rashida. They were on their way out to go to the open fields for the seed they found. 'That's a start for the gardens.' He thought, proud Dalila was helping out too.
'By the spirit's word, I wish there was another Head to help me organize these people...' He thought, taking a breath.

The young gatherer bounded up to Hikmat, a spring in her step. ''Hey, I'm Marjolaine'' Brushing reed-brown hair out of her eyes,she pumped Bede's hand up and down. ''Nice to meet you!'' Marjolaine gasped and looked around the oasis. ''You have no idea how much my feet hurt!'' The young girl complained, hopping around as she stared at her bare and sunbaked toes. ''Shut up.'' Bede interrupted her merry ramblings. ''We need to get as strong as possible and you, my dear, are slowing us down.'' The shaman sneered at her. ''We need a war chief.'' He turned on his heel and strutted off, as though Hikmat were not the chief.

''Wow, rude!'' Marjolaine hissed, clicking her tongue disapprovingly and taking hold of Hikmat's hand. ''You're leader.'' She smiled reassuringly, staring wide-eyed at the dark haired girl. ''I'll always listen to you, that's the way to survive.''

xxxThe Shaman slipped a bookmark into the old, ornate tome. She had found it hidden underneath one of the last few remaining boards in the Healing House, along with a few other books about medicine. There was also a book about history, although she had given that to her sister, Erze, to look over. Her discovery of the books had been recent, confining her to that building, so she had little knowledge of the state that the village was in.
xxx"Ibaris?"
xxxShe looked up at the sound of her name. She saw Illus standing in the doorway, looking concerned. He was clutching his bow, and his left arm was covered in blood. "Whose blood is that?" she asked, thinking back to what she had read on how to prevent infections.
xxxThe young Hunter looked down at himself, alarmed until he saw that she was talking about his arm. He wiped at it, managing to mostly get it off but leaving a few streaks of red on it. "It is just an animal's. I should clean up soon. I came because I am worried about Erze. She was crying and she wouldn't tell me why. She seems so...withdrawn. Like she's not really here. Just her body. You're her sister, Ibaris. Maybe you could talk to her? Make sure she's alright?"
xxx"She talked to me about it already."
xxx"What is it?"
xxx"She asked me not to say. If she wants you to know, she will tell you."
xxxWhen she finished speaking, Illus's expression changed to one of annoyance. "Both of you treat me like I'm just a naive little kid. I'm worried, here! I care! I just want an explanation. I want to know why she is acting this way. Why is it so hard for you to give me one?" Illus stormed out of the Healing House, muttering to himself. Ibaris only sighed and got back to reading.

xxxOnce she was some distance away from the camp, Sephlisa broke into a run. She was heading towards the place where Erze had found the tracks. She let her long hair fall from the ponytail she had it in. She loved the feeling of freedom. It reminded her of home, even in this landscape that was so alien to her. She remembered her childhood of running through the grass by the streams, feeling it tickle her bare feet. She had only left because of the people there. That was how she had come to be lost in the cold landscape she was in when the spirits appeared to her and told her to seek out this village called "Expanse." She was so glad that she could be a scout again.
xxxShe felt painful memories begin to arise, so she focused her attention on what was happening at that moment: running, the wind whipping at her, her hair flying back and streaming in the wind she created. Joy arose in her from the enjoyment of the activity. She was no longer fenced in by the Chief in her old village. She had almost forgotten what it felt like to be free.
