cindersky collected herself, staring over the world from her place atop a large, moss-covered stone. ever since being exiled from flickerclan, she hadn't been exactly sure of her purpose. the universe was still guiding her paws, this much she knew. otherwise, she wasn't sure exactly where she'd be now. but... well, life was a little lonely right now, and without other cats to provide for she wasn't yet busy. it left her alone with her thoughts most of the day.

with a glance to the sky, dark in its nighttime pelt, they took a deep breath. no, no, don't spiral, they reminded themself. as much as it'd hurt being torn from their old family, something in cindersky knew that they wouldn't be alone for long. they may even see some of their former clanmates again, too. the universe was still looking after them, and they knew that gut feeling had to be a sign from it.

it had already sent her some cats, too, though they didn't stick around. still, they were enough motivation to get her to her feet and push her out of a self-imposed isolation. her soul had been touched by the strangers she housed, no matter how briefly, and it fueled her longing to be around others. now, she had to work towards it, to build that community herself.

pushing themself to their paws, cindersky considered their next steps. they weren't going to be alone for long, so... best to start preparing, right? first priority, they supposed, was food. if they really were going to form a new group of cats, they needed more to survive on than the measly morsels cindersky had been feeding themself with... yes, that was a good goal. time to begin, then!

bridgestar opens her eyes. her glassy-eyed reflection stares back at her from within the pool of sparkling water and ripples as she gets to her paws. the movement feels sluggish, like she's dragging her limbs through churning water, and she has to consciously remember to breathe.

she remembers the journey to the hollow tree. navigating the large, uneven rocks and the hidden dips and curves of this territory. she can feel the mud stuck between her paw pads when she walks out from the dark and back into the cold of the forest.

bridgestar looks over her shoulder at the massive tree that's likely older than everything and everyone she's ever known. the wind rustles the drooping leaves still clinging to the thick boughs and she can almost hear whispering. she doesn't remember talking to starclan, only an expanse of deep blue and pinpricks of light and the outline of cats stalking her within the fog. she doesn't remember speaking to them, but she knows she's been heard.

The mountain answered her command with violence.

Stone tore free from the cliffs above camp, crashing down in a spray of dust and sparks. Warriors scattered, panic ripping through the clearing as the ground bucked beneath their paws.

“Nursery first!” Gorsestar shouted, leaping onto a fallen slab of rock to make herself seen. “Beestripe - take the elders! Everyone else, to the stream path now!”

The fissure widened. Black water surged outward, thick and stinking, hissing where it met cold air. It wasn’t a flood. It poured, as though the mountain itself were bleeding. The stench of coal and rot burned her nose, clawed down her throat.

Gorsestar forced herself higher, bracing against the shaking stone as another section of cliff sheared away behind her. The sound was deafening. The echoes shattered, bouncing back warped and wrong.

“Do not look back!” she roared. “EchoClan moves as one!”

For a heartbeat, they did.

Cats streamed past her - queens clutching kits, apprentices wide-eyed and stumbling, warriors snapping orders through the chaos. Beestripe and Petalbound's voices cut through the din somewhere to her left, steady despite the terror.

Then the ground gave.

A sinkhole yawned open near the old warriors’ den, swallowing brush, stone, and the edge of a patrol path whole. Gorsestar’s breath caught as the earth folded inward, as if the mountain were collapsing into itself.

“Crowcloud!” she called.

“I see it!” the medicine cat shouted back, coughing through ash. “Get them away from the water! It’s poison!”

Another violent jolt threw Gorsestar sideways. She caught herself on cracked stone, claws scraping, heart hammering.

This is it, she realized. This is what I waited too long to face.

A scream cut through the noise. Sharp and raw.

Gorsestar spun just in time to see the nursery wall buckle. Dust exploded outward as stone collapsed inward, and for one sickening heartbeat she saw Juniperbranch pinned amid the rubble, Weavekit wailing beneath her.

“NO-”

Piper moved before Gorsestar could. The she-cat hurled herself into the wreckage, teeth bared, shoulders braced beneath a fallen beam.

“Get Weavekit out of here!” Piper snarled. The beam shifted. Cracked.

Juniperbranch didn’t hesitate. She lunged forward, scooping her kit free with her.

The ledge above them collapsed. Stone slammed down in a thunderous roar, dust swallowing everything.

“PIPER!” Gorsestar shouted.

The ground split again, closer now, and black water surged into the space where Piper had stood moments before. Warriors scrambled, hauling one another back from the edge as the earth caved inward.

“She’s alive!” Witheredstalk yelled, dragging a bloodied shape free from the dust. “Barely!”

Gorsestar didn’t let herself stop. She couldn’t.

“Move her!” she ordered. “Everyone move!”

Behind them, the mountain screamed one final time.

A massive collapse thundered through the valley, cliffs folding inward as the high paths Echoclan had walked for generations vanished beneath ash and stone. The echoes died mid-return, swallowed whole.

Gorsestar ran with her clan as the mountain fell behind them, each step tearing her further from the land she had sworn to protect.

She did not look back. She could not afford to.

The mountain was finished with them. And EchoClan had to survive what came next.

They ran until the mountain’s voice faded into a distant, wounded roar.

The path down was chaos - loose shale, unfamiliar turns, darkness thick with ash. Gorsestar stayed at the rear, snapping commands, shoving faltering cats forward with her shoulder when words failed.

“Keep moving!” she ordered. “Do not stop—do not cluster!”

Behind them, the black water hissed and gurgled, chasing the path where the stream once ran clear. Crowcloud’s warning echoed in her ears.

Poison.

Coyotekit stumbled. Gorsestar caught him by the scruff without breaking stride, thrusting the kit into Honeycrawl's chest before pushing them onward.

At last, the land dipped sharply, the stone giving way to scrub and twisted pine. The ground stopped shaking. The air thinned, clearer - still tainted, but breathable.

Beestripe skidded to her side. “This is far enough. The mountain isn’t following.”

Gorsestar lifted her head, chest heaving.

“Then we stop,” she said hoarsely. “Here.”

EchoClan collapsed into the clearing like a body finally allowed to bleed.

Crowcloud’s paws were numb. Not from cold but from the fear he hadn’t let himself feel yet.

He moved through the fallen cats automatically, nose skimming pelts, teeth tugging eyelids open, counting breaths. Ash coated their whiskers. Black water streaked their legs like wounds.

“Do not drink,” he rasped, louder than he meant to. “Even if you’re thirsty. Even if it burns. Especially if it burns.”

Mousemint hovered at his side, unseeing eyes too wide, already stained dark with responsibility.

“Who’s missing?” he asked.

Crowcloud swallowed. “Wait until Gorsestar counts,” he said. “We will not guess.”

Behind him, Piper lay on her side, breathing shallowly, blood matting her flank. Auburnpaw pressed close to her mother, trembling but alert. Amberpaw lingered nearby, her gaze lingering heavily on her mother and littermate.

Crowcloud touched Piper’s shoulder with his tail. Live, he thought. Please.

- Raindrop, Storm, and Wisp are brought into PineClan's camp, Shadowclaw hissing under his breath as he recognizes the molly he courted seasons ago and his ears flatten in shame as he takes in the fact those kits with her are most likely his. As Ratstar summons the Clan for a meeting and formally gives Stormpaw and Wisppaw PineClan-appropriate names, Shadowclaw weasels his way through the crowd of cats calling out their new names and darts out of camp, not wanting to confront Raindrop and his kits just yet. As he leaves, one of the newcomers - Cowlick - stares after him, his eyes widening in recognition as he takes in the tom his mother fondly spoke of when he was young.

Before he can get up and follow after the enigmatic tom, Cowlick is quickly interrupted by Ripplestone and Swampheart calling him over to help with Ripplestone's rowdy litter as all three kits run circles around their overwhelmed mother and aunt. With a fond sigh, Cowlick trots up to his sisters to lend a paw.

- A much happier family reunion occurs between Marblesmudge and her kits Slatepaw, Granitepaw, and Gneisspaw. As she covers her kits in happy licks, Slatepaw questions if they can meet Dipperfoot once he's able to get a word in, causing his mother to pause mid-grooming session. Her eyes water, swallowing heavily as she struggles to reveal that their father had since passed. Her children, old enough to understand what happened, say nothing as they take turns nuzzling their grieving mother.

- Maplenose moves into the nursery to help Ripplestone care for Dandelionkit and Pricklekit, knowing she must already be overwhelmed with three kits of her own. She also feels strongly for the two lonely kits and hopes to keep them company until they hopefully find their mother.

- Penstemonpaw is giddy as Cloudtongue says he thinks she's ready to receive her full name, whiskers twitching in barely contained excitement and she and her mentor head towards the direction of the Moonpool by approaching the NeedleClan border. The white tom's eyes narrow as he notices some cats patrolling the perimeter...

the tunnels had been silent too long. veilstar felt it before any scent reached her - an absence where sound should have lived. even the distant drip of water seemed to hesitate, as if listening. she slowed, tail lifting just enough for the patrol behind her to still. palehollow’s paw froze mid-step. brassmaw’s shoulders tightened.

then the scent came. not fear. not weakness. smoke-warm, sharp like old resin and dusk-soaked stone. they found her standing alone on the far platform of an abandoned station, moonlight spilling through a broken ceiling in pale bands. she was all lines and angles - black fur cut clean against the concrete, eyes like molten amber catching the light without reflecting it. she did not flinch when she saw them. did not step back.

she bowed her head. “i was told to walk until the dark listened,” the she-cat said evenly. “this is where it stopped pushing me away.”

brassmaw’s lip curled. smogcloud hissed under his breath. veilstar stepped forward.

“who told you,” she asked, “to seek what does not call?”

the she-cat lifted her gaze then, amber eyes steady despite the weight of veilstar’s stare. “your dead.” she said simply. “they said you asked for one who would not turn aside.”

silence fell - thick, reverent, dangerous. veilstar searched her scent again. starclan clung to it faintly, like frost after dawn. not ownership. not command, but permission.

“what do you offer?” veilstar asked.

the she-cat did not hesitate. “loyalty without softness. hunger without recklessness. and a blade that dulls only when it is no longer needed.”

veilstar held her gaze for a long moment. then, quietly, “you will be called amberdusk,” she said. “for the light you carry - and the hour you belong to.”

amberdusk dipped her head deeper this time, and from behind veilstar, the tunnels seemed to breathe again.
