the border tunnels thinned where the city bled into forgotten places - collapsed fencing, damp concrete, the stale scent of runoff and old oil. veilstar moved at the front, pace unbroken, tail low and precise. smogcloud kept close to her left, eyes tracking every seam and shadow. brassmaw followed half a step behind, heavy paws quiet despite his size, presence like pressure in the air. palehollow ghosted the outer edge, pale fur catching stray light, while coinrust lingered rearward, scent-checking with methodical care.

they smelled her before they saw her. milk-sweet and iron. warm life undercut by stress.

veilstar halted with a single lift of her tail, and the patrol halted. the molly stood beneath a broken overpass, skin bare and mottled. no fur hid the swell of her belly. green eyes watched them without panic - only calculation, pain kept leashed. she did not retreat.

brassmaw shifted first, a low sound in his chest. veilstar flicked her tail once. he stilled.

“you crossed a line.” smogcloud said quietly, more statement than threat.

the molly’s gaze slid to veilstar. “i crossed what was open.” veilstar’s eyes narrowed slightly at the insinuation that their borders were open, but for the moment, stayed silent.

coinrust circled wide, nostrils flaring. “she’s close. two moons, maybe.”

palehollow stepped nearer, stopping just short of crowding. she read her stance, the careful distribution of weight, the way her claws bit into concrete not for balance - but readiness.

veilstar advanced alone. she studied the molly’s bare skin, the strain, the resolve. life pressing forward despite everything. “you cannot stay here, on the edge of our territory.” she said. “edges cut.”

the molly inclined her head. “then don’t leave me on it.”

silence followed, thick as fog.

veilstar turned slightly. “smogcloud. palehollow. clear the culvert. dry ground.”

brassmaw’s ears twitched. coinrust’s eyes narrowed.

“and her?” coinrust asked.

veilstar met the molly’s gaze again. “she walks.” the molly exhaled - just once. ”follow.”

Snowstar is busy ensuring camp in set for as many cats as possible with leaf-bare right around the corner now and the morning frost lingering longer into the day. He gathers as much bedding and materials as possible to make wind breaks at the camp and den entrances as well as bulk up the nests to keep inhabitants warm if they cannot get enough bodies into the dens to warm them enough.
Acorntoe takes extra patrols when he can to try finding as many cats as he can to bring in and shelter for the coming storms even if they don’t want to join the clan for good. Even if it’s just for the snowy season, that’s better than being exposed and not surviving. On one such patrol he came across a large white mass and for a moment was fearful that snowpack had already begun! But upon drawing closer… the mass moved and revealed a white molly with a striking gaze. He asked who she was and if she had anywhere to call home. Icygaze responded in kind and eventually agreed to return to Mapleclan’s camp and join the clan.

Roachtrack notices it first in his body, not his heart.

His jaw doesn’t clench when Palmettowing walks beside him. His thoughts don’t spiral, don’t rehearse what he should say or how he might be misread. He breathes easier without meaning to, matching her pace as naturally as if they’ve never walked apart.

It unsettles him.

He catches himself looking for her before patrols, drifting closer during shared meals, choosing spots near her without thinking. When something goes wrong - a misstep on slick concrete, a sharp word from another warrior - his first instinct is to glance at Palmettowing, not for reassurance, but because she’s there. Solid. Familiar.

One night, during a storm that shakes water loose from the ceiling, he realizes he hasn’t thought about Heartfern in days.

The guilt hits hard. Then fades.

What replaces it is quieter and far more frightening: the understanding that what he feels now isn’t need or fear of being alone. It’s trust. It’s comfort. It’s the sense that if everything else falls apart, Palmettowing will still be standing next to him, waiting.

This is what it was supposed to feel like, he thinks, and the thought nearly sends him reeling.

Roachtrack and Palmettowing duck down the stairs into the ironpath, shaking droplets of water from their pelt. The pair crouch down, peering back up the stairs to the sudden downpour outside.

Roachtrack opens his mouth, closes it. Palmettowing doesn’t look at him at first. She gives him space, the way she always has.

“I keep thinking,” he says finally, voice low, “that I messed something up by trying too hard. Or not hard enough. I don’t know anymore.”

She turns then, eyes soft but sharp enough to catch lies.

“I don’t want to pull you into something I haven’t figured out,” he adds. “You deserve better than that.”

Palmettowing exhales slowly. “I’m not asking you to decide anything,” she says. “I just don’t want you pretending you’re alone when you’re not.”

The words land between them, heavier than any confession could have been.

He wants to say her name like a promise. Instead, he nods, because if he speaks again, he’s afraid the truth will come out unfinished and fragile. They sit together until the storm quiets, shoulders brushing, neither of them brave or foolish enough to cross the line yet.

It happens casually. Carelessly.

Lightflare laughs on patrol and says, “You two might as well admit it already.”

Roachtrack answers too quickly. “We’re not mates.” The words feel wrong the moment they leave his mouth.

Palmettowing doesn’t argue. She doesn’t look hurt. She just inclines her head and continues forward, but something subtle shifts. She gives him space where there hadn’t been any before. Her touch disappears. The silences stretch longer.

That night, Roachtrack realizes what he’s done. Not denied a rumor - but chosen safety over honesty. And for the first time in his life, the safety feels unbearable.

He finds Palmettowing near the nursery, where the air is warm and muted, kits murmuring in their sleep. It feels like the right place to be honest - somewhere built around care instead of fear.

“I said we weren’t mates,” he begins, voice steady despite the pounding in his chest. “And that was true. But it wasn’t the whole truth.”

She watches him closely now.

“I’m done pretending I don’t know what I want,” he continues. “I don’t want to stumble into this. I want to choose it. I want to choose you - slowly, carefully, if that’s what it takes.”

Palmettowing studies him for a long moment, weighing his words like she’s weighed everything else in her life. Then she steps closer, close enough that their noses nearly touch.

“I don’t need grand promises,” she says quietly. “I just need you to mean it.”

“I do,” he answers. And this time, there’s no doubt. She leans into him, not desperate, not hesitant. Just sure.

The nursery smells faintly of warm stone and milk, and the kits are finally asleep in a loose pile. Palmettowing has stayed to help, not because she was asked, but because she always notices when Highrise’s shoulders start to sag.

Highrise watches her for a long moment before speaking.

“Tunamouth used to hum,” she says, almost to herself. “Not songs. Just… sounds. Like he was reminding the world he was still in it.”

Palmettowing pauses, careful not to break the moment. “What kind of sounds?”

Highrise’s whiskers twitch. “Bad ones,” she admits. “Off-key. He didn’t care.”

She adjusts a kit gently with her nose. The motion is practiced now - muscle memory layered over grief.

“He was never afraid of the water,” Highrise continues. “Even when the floods started getting worse. Said the station had survived worse things than us.” Her voice tightens, just a fraction. “I believed him.”

There’s no accusation in it. No bitterness. Just fact.

Palmettowing sits, folding her tail neatly around her paws. She doesn’t offer comfort yet. She waits.

“He didn’t get to meet them the way I thought he would,” Highrise says, looking down at the kits. “I keep wondering what they would’ve learned from him. What I can’t teach.”

Palmettowing speaks then, quiet and steady. “They’ll learn that he loved them. You carry that.”

Highrise exhales slowly. The sound shivers through her chest. “Roachtrack reminds me of him sometimes,” she adds after a pause. “The way he carries guilt like it’s useful. Like if he holds it tight enough, it’ll keep everyone else safe.”

Palmettowing nods once. “He’s learning he doesn’t have to do that alone.”

Highrise curls back around her kits, eyes closing. “If Roachtrack has a reason for choosing you,” she murmurs, already half-asleep, “it’s because you make the world quieter.”

The station settles around them, water dripping somewhere far off, and Palmettowing stays until morning - not out of obligation.

But because some losses deserve witnesses.

Though the camp was abandoned, the Starstone wasn’t. Needlestar went there to plead to StarClan for help, but to her surprise, her prayers were answered before she even got a chance to touch her nose to the stone.

Houndheart had just became a warrior when the storm hit, and he still had his kittenish qualities. Before Needlestar could even process what she had seen, Houndheart had already bounded up to her, bumping his head against her.

“Pinetail told me to stay here while he looked for Berryspots, but I haven’t seen either of them since!” Houndheart said.

“Then we’ll look for them together. We have enough fresh-kill from before the storm to feed us two for another moon.”

Cats of all types are found here. Short-haired and medium-haired cats seem to be more plentiful, however.

Belief System
The Three Goddesses are believed to have created the very first cats, going as far as to weave the ability to pass down their magic into every cat henceforth. The Medics come to the meadow’s plaza on each full moon to try and commune with the Three Goddesses, though they are rarely successful in doing so.

Territory
Situated in the countryside, the nekos have set up long-abandoned horse stables and viewing stands as a makeshift camp, and the rest of their territory is a huge racetrack. The perimeter strip is dirt, good for catching prey dwelling beneath the ground. The next couple of strips, the second thinner than the first, are closely shaved turf. In the inside of all the strips is a field of overgrown grass dotted by bushes and trees. A ring of trees conceal a meadow with a stone-paved plaza, which has a fountain depicting three elegant cats in various running positions in the center.

Predators
The wide-open and heavily urbanized territory dissuades some, but certainly not all, predators from straying onto the land. Birds of prey (hawks being the most common), bobcats, and even wolves will cross their territory from time to time. Humans never come to the track anymore, due to how far out of the way it is.

Glasstumble finally catches up to them both with a purr rumbling in her throat, happy to see that they're in good spirits despite everything they've been through.

Before she could call for help, Frostcinder let out a screech as he barreled into her attacker, both cats writhing together on the ground as they threw blows that ended up with the rogue panting under Frostcinder's paws. With a final spit, Frostcinder clawed his opponent's muzzle before they heaved themself upward and fled down a dark alleyway, leaving both VeilClan cats alone. With the threat gone and Nullfur unharmed, albeit a little shaken, Frostcinder allowed himself to stagger once the pain from his injuries caught up to him. -- Frostcinder requires x1 chamomile, x1 chervil, and one moon of rest.

Tarantulapaw was quickly transferred to the medics' den after he exhibited every symptom of greencough, despite trying to assure everyone he was fine, a watery, nasty cough told his mentor and the medics otherwise. He'll need x1 honey, x1 chickweed, and two moons of rest.

Mushroompaw's stomach kept him writhing in his nest from uncomfortable cramping. He'll need one moon of rest.

Civetleap was a few paces ahead of Crabpaw when a dreadful shriek stopped her in her tracks, the molly swiveled back and raced to her apprentice's side where she discovered that her front paw had been trapped in a Twoleg-made trap full of sharp metal teeth. In her panic, Crabpaw tried to drag her paw to her chest, only for the trap to tighten around her limb. Civetleap hissed at her to stay still as she looked for a way to loosen it, yowling for help when she finally found the springs keeping the trap closed. With a final whimper, Crabpaw fell unconscious and later woke up in Batleaf's den, an acute numbness in her front paw that wasn't there before... She'll need x1 goldenrod, x1 daisy leaves, x1 lamb's ear, and three moons of rest. Her right forepaw had to be amputated.
