“i’m telling you, i was this close!” goldendawn exclaimed, dejectedly flicking water off his paws. the tortoiseshell had to stifle an exasperated sigh.

the leader and warrior were out on a hunting patrol. lichenstar had taken goldendawn to one of the territory’s better hunting grounds to test his hunting skills. after one successful demonstration, in which lichenstar managed to drag up a large fish, he had become determined to catch a fish himself.

and that is where the two had been stalled for the past hour or so… goldendawn’s tenacity for the new task at paw was certainly admirable, but any attempts at instruction while he was deadset on his goal seemed to roll off him like water on a duck’s feathers. ‘if this is what mentoring is like,’ she mentally grumbled, ‘i am never taking on an apprentice.’

“goldendawn, listen.” finally having enough, she herded him back from the water’s edge with her tail, gesturing for him to sit. “how were you catching food for yourself before joining bulrushclan? you were wandering for a while, and you had to feed yourself, so how did you do it?”

goldendawn’s nose scrunched as he thought. “well i’ve always been pretty good at catching land prey. mice and voles and stuff…” he deflated a bit. “i never thought fishing would be this much harder.” lichenstar felt a surge of sympathy run through her.

“fishing is very different from hunting land prey, so what worked for you there might not work with this... if you want, i could give you a proper lesson later?” goldendawn looked pleased with that idea, but when he glanced back at the fish, he winced.

“i still need to catch something though.”

“you don’t need to. the fish i caught is more than enough for today, and you can always go on patrol again tomorrow.” goldendawn opened his mouth to retort, but lichenstar quickly shushed him. she could hear a frog hopping about somewhere in the reeds off to her right, and she gestured goldendawn in the vague direction of it. “hold on. there’s something over there. want to try catching that?”

goldendawn seemed to perk back up at the opportunity, smiling as he dropped into a careful hunter’s crouch. he crept forward noiselessly, ears swivelling to angle in on his prey, and lichenstar found herself impressed. ‘guess he wasn’t kidding about being a good hunter.’

like lightning, he suddenly pounced, but as soon as he got a proper hold on it, he yelped and flung it back. “a frog?!”

“yes, a frog!” lichenstar stared blankly at the bewildered tom, who was hissing and spitting at the limp frog on the ground as if he had just threatened him personally.

“that’s… eugh! gross! is this a joke? were you pulling a prank on me?” his fur bristled as he whirled around to demand answers from lichenstar.

“no? it’s prey, you did a great job, we can eat that!” lichenstar answered, trotting over to pick it up from where he had tossed it.

goldendawn somehow seemed even more shocked at that. after glancing back and forth at lichenstar and the frog, he eventually pulled himself together, though his ears were still pinned back in disgust. “oh my stars, you’re serious… i mean, okay, you can eat that frog. i would really rather not.”

lichenstar narrowed her eyes at him, though there was no real bite, just confusion. “your loss.”

iciclewhisker had settled neatly into bulrushclan over the course of the past moon. it had been different from what they were used to, but it was a nice kind of different.

so far, they only had two clanmates. lichenstar, the leader, who had been welcoming and warm, and the one warrior goldendawn, who had seemed somewhat squeamish, but nothing that couldn’t be worked on with dedication and time. it was small and quiet, but one day it might become someplace they could call home.

now, it wouldn’t be right to say they were homesick for their old clan. they had despised it, but it still clung to them like a thorn in their paw; difficult to shake off or ignore, and only paining them as they moved away.

the main source of their pain was those they had left behind. there were several dear friends of theirs who had quietly opposed salmonstar’s reign and looked up to them as the one who voiced their opposition. would they keep fighting without them around? under the circumstances of their departure, they didn’t even get the chance to say goodbye. not even to their own sister…

they winced at the thought that they had left her all alone. not of their own free will, of course, but they still found themself wondering if she ached at the loss of a sibling the same way they missed her.

caught up in their remorse, iciclewhisker barely noticed the steady approach of pawsteps until it was too late. they barely had time to flick their ears up before they were bowled over into the grass. though they could not see their assailant, with a honed instinct, iciclewhisker immediately kicked out to send them staggering back.

“what was that for?! is that really how you’re going to greet me?” they said, more amused than annoyed, and iciclewhisker’s face lit up in recognition. they knew that raspy voice anywhere.

“coniferclaw!” iciclewhisker purred, instantly surging forward to meet their sister in an affectionate headbutt. coniferclaw returned the purr with double the volume.

“there we go… yeah, i missed you too, icy.”

“how did you find me?” iciclewhisker asked sceptically. “i didn’t exactly get to talk to you before i got-”

“banished?” coniferclaw looked to them for confirmation. “yeah, figured.” she scowled. “you know, they told us all you died... the tyrant’s lackeys said you got jumped by dogs.”

“covering it up...” iciclewhisker frowned.

“well, they did a horrible job of it. i think everyone knew the truth, that he just wanted to shut you up, but we were all too scared to speak up.” her whiskers drooped in shame. “i found where they chased you off. followed your scent. family sticks together, after all. lagged behind a bit to make sure they weren’t following my trail, but i don’t think they bothered.”

after that, the siblings just leaned against each other for a while. a minute of silence later, iciclewhisker spoke up. “i’m so sorry i didn’t get to say anything before i was banished. i would have done just about anything to at least say goodbye, but they threatened me with death if i even tried to step foot back on territory, and we both know salmonstar doesn’t bluff.” coniferclaw’s eyes turned steely at that, but she remained quiet.

“i felt so terrible leaving with him still in power, knowing he was just playing with your lives like a kittypet with a toy, but when i slept, i had this vision… mom came to me. she told me that he would get what he deserved in due time.”

“well that’s vague.” coniferclaw snorted dismissively. “no disrespect to mom, i just- i want to see him pay. you know, while the two of us alone couldn’t really make a dent on him, i’m sure if we could rally enough cats together he’d never even see it coming! we could…” she sprung to her paws, a determined spark in her eyes. “we could start a clan of our own!”

iciclewhisker winced. “actually... i’ve already joined a new clan. it’s called bulrushclan. i’m deputy.” at her bewildered look, they continued. “that’s the next thing mom said. she told me there was a fledgling clan in need of assistance, and she saw my potential as a deputy and pointed me their way.”

“that’s perfect! we can rally bulrushclan together, and salmonstar wouldn’t stand a chance.”

iciclewhisker growled back. “no, no, we’re not pulling bulrushclan into our business. i meant it when i said this is a small clan. there’s only three cats, me included. we can’t just rush back into the fray. i haven’t even told them anything about salmonstar yet, and to be frank, i don’t know if i should. we should leave them out of this.”

“wh- but you’ve been resisting salmonstar for moons! there are so many cats back at minnowclan that look up to you, and you’re going to turn your back on them for a clan just joined?”

“i did not turn my back on them, i was forcibly banished! plus, have you spared one thought for the bulrushclan cats in this scenario? if we recklessly lead them into a battle like this, cats could lose their lives pointlessly in a fight they have no stake in. doesn’t that sound familiar?”

their sister flinched sharply at that, and iciclewhisker realized they may have gone too far. “sorry. i shouldn’t have compared you to him. you have good intentions, while he’s just driven by greed. you’re not like him.” they moved their paw to lay over hers. “i want to take salmonstar down too, but i don’t think using bulrushclan as a means to an end is right. plus, mom never specified if we’re actually the ones meant to take him down. and, if we are… i think we’ll know when or if that time comes.”

coniferclaw didn’t look fully convinced, but managed a weak smile. “alright. i think i can live with that. trust in starclan and all that…” she looked at them, an indecipherable look in her eyes, before shaking her head. “look at you, oh so responsible. thinking of others. guess that’s why you're the deputy of this clan.”

iciclewhisker felt a flicker of pride at her words. “speaking of bulrushclan, would you like to become a warrior here? i kind of inferred so from our discussion but i didn’t want to presume.”

she smirked. “oh, of course i would! did you think i was just going to up and run off on you so soon? take me to your leader, oh bulrushclan deputy...”

The current season is newleaf! The leaves are adorned with fresh dew and the sun beams gently onto the earth. Because the weather outside is so lovely, lots of cats are going out to enjoy it, and they might just need a new Clan to settle down in.
