"Selinaa!" Hilda called out, hands on hips. After the several months spent in the village, Selina had learned to speak properly and somewhat behave in society, but she still had that strong need for freedom that characterized her so, and her unruliness had earned her the title of "wild child" quickly. Hilda herself didn't use it, but had heard many of the kids and even a few adults use it. Though, who called Selina a wild child or not wasn't really Hilda's primary concern at the moment. It was late morning, and lunch would be served soon- with the few months experience she had, the mother knew it might take her a long time to find Selina. "Selina, it's lunchtime!" she called again. The dwarf began making her way to the forest edge, down the slope that led to the village, after assuring herself that Selina wasn't by the edge of the cliff. It was as she passed one of the fields that Hilda noticed the fast movement of a bushy head, indicating Selina's presence. Hilda didn't have time to call out- Selina was already gone- so she set off after the child, in the direction of the horse paddock.
After a couple minutes of walking, behind a large shed, Hilda found Selina sitting on the wooden barrier of the horse paddock, staring intently at Pitaya, the youngest mare, barely more than a foal in all honesty. So far, nobody had been allowed to come close to the young mare- her mother, Apple, a gorgeous grey dappled horse, was extremely protective of her young white and black appaloosa and kicked everyone away. But today, Apple stayed a small distance off to the side. Chestnut, her second foal, was grazing near her, but Pitaya was staring back at Selina, barely a few meters away. The mare stood, legs slightly apart in the manner of foals, and nostrils blown out. Selina sat on top of the fence, one hand holding on for balance, the other help out towards Pitaya, palm up. She was still, stiller than Hilda had ever seen her. Neither child nor horse seemed to notice the dwarf as she leaned against the shed, silently watching.
Pitaya danced a few steps to the side, snorting anxiously. Hilda realized that Selina was speaking, quietly, gently, but without stopping, barely taking a break to catch her breath. "Come on girl, I promise I won't hurt you, I think that we could be great friends, come here girl, it's ok, I promise..." Pitaya took a single, hesitant step forward, then pulled back immediately as if scared. After a few more seconds, she took another step forward, repeating the process. This maneuver went on for many long minutes, so long that Hilda wondered how on earth Selina could stay so still for that long- her nose itched at the simple thought of it. But she couldn't deny that it was amazing: the shy, hesitant horse was very slowly getting closer, until her muzzle was barely a few centimeters away from Selina's hand. And yet, the child did not move, except for her lips, still gently encouraging the foal. Hilda felt a surge of pride for the girl- whether she would manage to stroke Pitaya or not, she had shown incredible gentleness, patience and tenacity.
It took more time still to pass the last centimeters, but finally- Hilda saw Selina's hand move slightly as Pitaya's grey muzzle pushed against it. The young horse backed off immediately at the touch, but it barely took thirty seconds for her to come back. A large grin spread over Selina's face as she fondly scratched Pitaya between the nostrils. "That's a good girl, you're a very good girl, Pitaya." she murmured. Pitaya whinnied approvingly.
Hilda did not dare disturb them, so it took another few minutes until Selina looked over and saw her mother standing there. "Oh! Mum! Can we keep her?" The sheer hope and joy in the girls voice and the shine in her eyes made Hilda want to immediately reply 'yes'. Instead, she chuckled. "Well, not right now, but I promise I'll ask Myriam about it. We can't keep her at home though, you'd need to come over here to see her." Selina shrugged. "That doesn't matter! Thank you!!" Hilda's smile would not disappear. "Now come on, it's lunchtime." Selina's face fell. "Now?" "Now. But you can come to see her directly after lunch. no riding yet though, you gotta wait for Azelle." Selina reluctantly separated herself from Pitaya and ducked under the barrier to join her mom. "That's true? I can ride her if Azelle teaches me?" Hilda grinned. "As long as Pitaya is old enough, ye! If I can trust you to be responsible, of course. "Of course!!" Selina hugged Hilda, which warmed the dwarf's heart. Hugs from your child were absolutely the best. The two then made their way back to the house, Selina chattering excitedly and jumping around. Hilda felt like her heart was feather-light. She was incredibly proud of her.
Only downside, Hilda was still questioning how by Gorlog's teeth she was going to convince Aaron that letting their 9-year old start riding lessons was a good idea- or that keeping the horse was a good idea too, for that matter.

Ever since they had gone out this morning on hunting patrol, Aaron and Gwinaelle hadn't had much luck. They were one of three groups hunting in approximately the same area, the other groups being Myriam and Peony and Nayah and Hilda. Usually, Hilda was Aaron's hunting partner, but since Aaron had volunteered to mentor Gwinaelle, he spent his days with her, trying his best to pass on whatever knowledge he had. Despite his best efforts- and Gwin's too- neither had found any fresh game trail all morning. Aaron knew very well that hunting was all about patience, but he was frustrated at being unable to show his mentee more than just the searching-for-a-trail part.
"I'm sorry 'bout that Gwin, today isn't the most exciting hunting lesson." Aaron mumbled, after they had established that this trail was, again, several days old and completely useless. Aaron was quick to believe everything was his fault. Gwinaelle laughed. "It's alright Aaron, I'd be a pretty terrible apprentice if I blamed you for the lack of game in our part of the forest." she shrugged. "We got unlucky a the drawing of territories, that's all." Before splitting up, the three hunting groups had drawn lots on who would hunt where. "Besides, it's still very interesting to learn how to tell how old a trail is and all that!" Aaron nodded, a smile raising the corner of his lips. The two kept on walking for another hour, mostly silent except when Aaron paused to show Gwin one interesting thing or another. After a while, Aaron looked at Gwinaelle sideways and shifted uncomfortably. "I uh.." he hesitated. "Just wait here a minute, ok? I just- well, nature calls." Gwin grinned, but resisted the urge to comment. "Go on, I'm not budging."
Gwinaelle leaned on a tree, arms crossed. She wasn't lying when she said this was interesting, but she too wished something would come up. She wanted to get on with her learning. Hopefully they'd have more luck in the afternoon. Gwin's thoughts were suddenly interrupted when a screech rang out between the trees. It wasn't a scream, it was a high-pitched screech. Gwin's hand dropped to the dagger at her side, and she turned in the direction the noise had come from- where Aaron had gone. Another noise came from the same area, this time a shout. "Don't just keep looking at me like that!" it was definitely Aaron. He sounded outraged. Gwin was still considering going over or not when Aaron appeared from behind the bushes, stomping angrily, face almost as red as his hair. Behind, a boy wheezing in laughter followed him, and behind the boy, two more people followed, looking amused but slightly embarrassed.
Gwinaelle's eyes wandered between the furious Aaron and the laughing boy, a bemused expression on her face. Before she could say anything, Aaron turned to the three strangers, hands on his hips. "What'd'you want?" a relatively short, light-skinned and curly haired man, who looked perhaps the most serious out of the lot, stepped forward. "I apologise for our untimely arrival and my companions... Inappropriate behaviour." he grimaced. "I think someone here needs to calm down." the man continued, shooting a pointed look at the younger boy. Said boy took a few breaths to calm down, and his laughter died down slowly- though he continued chuckling to himself every now and then. After a few seconds, the man who had first talked went on.
"My name is Jasper Apolosson, this," he pointed at the man who had been silent so far, "is Idris Irisson, and the boy is Fate Helensson. We originate from Athens, but as time passed, things were getting a little.. Heated, and we decided to leave together. Since then, we have been traveling, but as time passes and the seasons advance, we all agreed that finding a more permanent place to stay was the best choice for us now- hence why we made ourselves known to you now." Aaron's face had slowly begun going back to a normal color during Jasper's explanation, though it was still a little pink.
"Hold on." he cut in. "What do you mean by make yourselves known to us now?" Jasper shrugged. "Exactly that. We've known about your village for a while already, but didn't think it necessary to make ourselves known before now." a few seconds of silence passed. "How long have you known about Cyrrane?" Aaron fought to keep his voice level, but to someone used to detecting other people's emotions like Jasper, it was clear that he was deeply unsettled. "A month or so. At first we only saw the tracks that the patrols or hunting groups left behind, then after following the river a few weeks earlier, we stumbled upon the lake, and noticed the houses on the cliffs above. We didn't go up, not wanting to startle anyone. Seems like we failed that part."
Aaron took some more time to formulate his response. "Alright, I.. See. But now you'd like to join us?" Jasper nodded. Cyrrane's red-headed hunter scratched the back of his head. "A-Alright then. I think we're done for today, Gwin." and he began leading the group back to the village, trying to keep the conversation going but still being clearly unsettled. He didn't like the idea of strangers having known about the village for weeks before they eventually found out about them. Were these people even human??

Just in front of their little house on the southern side of Cyrrane, Maple and Ian were both busy. Ian's father, Calder, was still out patrolling (though he could come back anytime now) and Maple was shelling beans for the evening's meal, her familiar, the white cat Poppy, on her lap. Meanwhile, Ian was using sticks and leaves to make a small insect house. It wasn't going exactly as he wanted it to: the sticks kept falling, and the leaves would always blow away with the slight breeze they had up here. Ian, though a generally sweet and calm child, was slowly losing patience, putting down the sticks in a rougher manner each time, small face scrunched up in annoyance. Eventually, the sticks did hold, and very, very gently, Ian put the leaves on top and stood straight with a triumphant shout. "Mama! Look!'' However, as his mother glanced up to see what he wanted to show her, a gust of wind brought the whole affair crashing down again. "But NOO!" Ian shouted, face reddening in anger.
The child stomped his foot, and suddenly, in the middle of the fallen sticks, a flame rose up, then more- the small pile was entirely ablaze in less than a second. Behind her son, Maple paled, dropping the beans and rushing to him- much to the annoyance of Poppy, who fell to the ground. The 6 year old had stumbled away from the fire and was crying in fright and shock. Maple reached her son in two large steps and took him in her arms. She waved a hand towards the fire, which immediately extinguished, leaving behind a smoking pile of ashes. Ian cried into his mother's shoulder, small hands grasping the back of her dress. Maple pressed him closer to her, her eyes wide and hands shaking, though she tried not to let him notice that. Her worst fear had just been confirmed. "It's ok Ian, it's ok. You didn't mean to." she whispered, even if inside, she knew that it wasn't ok.
It was now that Calder came back. From a few dozen meters away, he had been alarmed by the smoke coming from the direction of their house, and was even more so as he noticed the sobbing Ian in his mother's arms. Calder ran the last few meters separating him from his family, and laid a hand on Maple's shoulder, shooting her a worried look. "Did Ian get hurt?" he asked. Maple shook her head wordlessly, pointing at the smoking pile of ashes instead. Calder did not understand, and looked back at her questioningly. Maple gestured at the pile again, and, with her voice shaking, explained. "He got angry and set it on fire. Ian is a wizard, like both of us." Calder looked back at the ashes, eyes widening in understanding. "He-" and suddenly he understood Maple's shaky behaviour too. "And you think that they'll come?" he whispered. Maple did not look him in the eyes, but nodded wordlessly. Calder felt his throat tighten, and he wrapped wife and child in a large hug. "I won't let them take him."

"Xzavier?" coming into the dark tool shed from the sun-lit outside fields, Tamara could not see where her fellow gatherer was. "I'm here, gorgeous!" the familiar voice called from a corner. Although he most likely couldn't see it, Tamara rolled her eyes. After a few seconds of blinking into the darkness, Tamara's eyes began to adjust to the dim light, and she spotted Xzavier sitting at a desk in the corner, counting out the seeds they had collected today before they could be sent off to the village storage area. "Congrats, you're actually working for once." Tamara stated, getting closer. Xzavier grinned, not looking up. "Well yes, for once I did have to, with all the things we got today. You did good work." Xzavier's voice was mellow. Tamara blushed slightly, and was suddenly glad the dim light could hide it. "So did you." she retorted. "But I wasn't here to talk about that." Tamara hesitated.
"I wanted to er, thank you for, well, cheering me up earlier? And encouraging me to do something. Trade. It worked well, back at the marketplace, and I'm glad I went. I was able to help Myriam with that." it certainly wasn't a habit for her to thank Xzavier, but she felt that this time, he deserved it. The blond man looked her straight in the eyes for a long second before replying with a cheeky grin. "No problem, love. Glad to see you've found your calling." Once again, Tamara felt a rush of blood come into her face, and strongly hoped he would not notice. To hide her embarrassment, Tamara turned away. "I told you to stop calling me love!" she shouted back, leaving the room in a hurry.

The evening was cool, but not overly cold- it was easily possible to go around with just a cardigan. This is exactly what Myriam was wearing as she crossed the village, up towards the Healers Hut. A visit there was the next thing on her schedule.
As she was only a dozen meters away, the door of the hut opened and a lanky figure left it. It was Hessin, the young child who had expressed the wish to become the healers apprentice. Under Myriam's strong influence, Joan had agreed, and Hessin had begun his training a few days ago. Now, Myriam was on her way to ask how it was going with him- she had heard echoes of course, but it was always safest to get a first-hand account from the person involved. As he passed her, Hessin smiled shyly and mumbled a "Good morning- uh, evening!" before hurrying away. Myriam grinned. Hessin was wonderful in many aspects, but few could match his head-in-the-clouds-ness.
Myriam knocked thrice on the wooden door, and upon hearing a soft "Come in!", pushed it open and entered the warm house. At the desk on the left, Joan was tidying up papers. On the far right stood a bed Myriam only knew too well- she and other villagers had used it when sick or hurt, when Joan wanted to keep an eye on them through the night. On the ground, just near the head of the bed was an arranged pile of cushions, upon which throned one of the cats- probably Cordelia, Myriam remembered. The molly had taken a liking to Joan, one which was happily reciprocated by the healer.
Pulling Myriam from her contemplation, Joan dropped a heavy pile of papers into a drawer with a thump, and turned to the leader. "Anything I can help you with?" she asked, leaning against the desk. "Sort of-'' Myriam gathered her thoughts for half a second. "I only wanted to ask how it was going with Hessin. I do feel slightly responsible for you having taken him as your apprentice, and i couldn't but worry my nails off at this constantly." Myriam grinned lopsidedly. Joan chuckled. "No, I'm glad you insisted. I had underestimated how helpful a second person here would be. By the time I've trained him up, he'll quite literally cut my work in half. By the way, eating your nails is a very bad and very unsanitary habit that you should try to break quickly." Myriam cautiously avoided the topic of her eating her nails and went back to respond to the original answer. "That's reassuring to hear. And while you haven't trained him yet? Does he not take up too much of your time?" Joan laughed. "Well, he does, he never stops talking, now that he's not so shy around me anymore. But he makes up for that with very quick learning and extremely useful inventions. Look-" Joan moved to the work bench and gestured to a curious contraption. "This here lets me mix ingredients in a bowl by pressing on a wooden plate with my foot. This leaves my hands completely free to do other things. He also promised a machine to weave bandages faster."
Myriam listened attentively. Maybe she could ask Hessin to do a machine that would fill in paperwork for her. Aside from the joking, Myriam was glad to see how well it seemed to be going. Before Hessin had arrived, Joan had been weak and exhausted by the long, lonely nights. Now, the young healer had a spring in her step. "He learns quickly?" Myriam asked. Joan nodded once more. "He does. Most of the time, I only need to say things once. He's eager to learn, asks questions constantly.. You made a good choice in recommending him to me, Myriam." the leader heard herself sigh, louder than she'd meant to. "Even after all those years, it still does me heaps of good to actually hear that. I'm glad it's going well." Joan smiled at Myriam. "I may not have known too many leaders, but from the ones I have met, you are definitely the one that cares so deeply for the well-being of her village. You shouldn't doubt yourself so much." Myriam grinned ruefully. "Maybe not, but I still do. Can't help myself." despite her joking retort, she was touched by Joan's words. Did the healer know just how much it meant to her? Maybe, maybe she did. "Fair enough, it's not like I can say much in that regard." Joan shot back. The two women talked for another few minutes, until Myriam was reminded that she did have a schedule, and needed to take care of other things. After a quick goodbye, Myriam left the Healer's Hut and made her way back to the center of the village, heart much lighter than it had been on her way up.

Jaymes' obligations were all done, and he had an hour or two left before dinner time, so he had decided to go into the forest and practice the mandola a little. As he stepped under the trees, Jaymes took his mandola from his back and strummed a few chords, a smile appearing at his lips. It was nice being alone, sometimes. Jaymes walked for a while, playing quietly, before finding a nice spot to sit down, at the edge of a clearing. He didn't stick to one song, but flowed freely from one to another, preferring the improvisation to being stuck with a specific piece. As he played and hummed, a gentle tone slipped into the music, just as a certain person slipped into his mind. Jaymed sung under his breath. "Oh Ana, I think of you when you're not here, I think of you when you are near, I think of you.. All the time. I can't say these words to you, cause I'm way too shy.. But oh Ana, when I say this to myself, I realise: I'd really like to see you more." as Jaymes got to the end of his little improvisation, his face reddened slightly despite there not being anyone to hear him. It felt odd saying this out loud.
And then, to Jaymes' absolute horror, cheerful clapping rang through the trees. "That was really beautiful!" Jaymes did not dare raise his head to meet her eyes, but he did turn slightly in the direction the voice came from- above him, up in the trees. A certain fairy sat there, wings flapping in time with her clapping hands. "H-Hey Ana." Jaymes mumbled, his face even redder than before. Ana flew down, though instead of landing in front of Jaymes, she continued fluttering around. "I'm not joking Jaymes, I really liked the song. Very sweet." had Jaymes dared looking at anything else but his feet at this moment, he may have noticed that Ana's cheeks had darkened in a slight blush as she said this. "Ah, uh, thank you." Jaymes hesitated, then ended up asking the dreaded question: "Did you hear who the song was about?" as he had asked the question, Ana was behind him, but she took the time to go around and land in front of him before answering. "Yes, I did, and I'm very, well, happy, or maybe honored you wrote it." for the first time in their conversation, Ana sounded a little unsure of herself.
Jaymes looked up at her in surprise, but before he could say anything, a loud rustle in the bushes startled both young people. A rather large bat flew out from the bushes, straight towards Jaymes and Ana. While the former stepped back in surprise, Ana stayed where she was, and an angry frown appeared on her brow. As the bat was hardly a few steps away, it suddenly shifted. In seconds, it had grown to extraordinary proportions, the wings had shrunk, the face flattened and legs lengthened. Jaymes stared. "Mr- My Tale? I-" Ana's grandfather cleared his throat, laying a strict gaze on the two young people in front of him. "Ana, I was expecting you to be home by sundown. Why were you not?" Ana did not reply, her determined frown even more marked now. Sabra Tale turned to Jaymes. "And you, don't you have something better to do? I'm sure someone in the village could need your help, if only you were there to offer it." his voice was a lot harsher than Jaymes was accustomed to, and the boy only nodded, too stunned to speak up. Sabra's gaze lingered on him for a few seconds still before he turned away. "Now come on, dinner will be any minute now." and he waved the two forward.
The trip back was silent. Jaymes and Ana walked together in front, followed by Sabra. As the group arrived at the top of the path and was about to split up, Ana leaned close to Jaymes and whispered: "Your silver hair shines in the moonlight, it's very pretty." Jaymes blushed so strongly that even in the dim light it was visible. Ana flashed a grin at him then turned away to go towards her house, flying this time, though not before shooting a glare at her grandfather. The old man watched her disappear between the houses, then looked as Jaymes left towards the kitchens, occasionally looking back in the direction Ana had gone in. Now alone, Sabra heaved a long sigh. "I hope she will forgive me at a later time, but I had to try this, pose at least a little resistance to their union, lest too light winning make the prize light." Now, the elder- who did feel older now than ever before- slowly made his way into the village, heavily leaning on his cane. He was tired.
~~~
It was late in the evening, long after dinner and when all the children had been sent to bed by their parents. There weren't many lights still on: One in Myriam's office (through the window, one could see Panto bringing her a cup of tea), one in Laedrya and Zaos' house (they were still up, locked in a serious discussion) and one in Tamara's room, in one of the large buildings that offered small apartments to the villagers that didn't have a family- there weren't enough houses in Cyrrane to offer one to everybody, despite there being more built constantly.
Tamara was still working, organising lists of things the village could sell- she'd gotten the list of the village's average weekly consumptions from Myriam- and what they might still need. It would be nice to have more variety in fruits and vegetables, for example. Cows or sheep would be a great addition if they could acquire one, to help with farming. And of course, Tamara was strongly hoping to get better quality fabrics for clothes and sheets, and eventually find a way to get electricity in the village. This last plan would certainly be a very long-term project, since, as of now, she and Layla were the only ones to have known electricity, and neither of them was capable of reproducing an electric system. But Tamara knew that for creating electricity, the windmill at the top of the cliff (that still wasn't used for anything, though Myriam was planning on renovating it and starting it up again, possibly to pump up water and give all the houses running water), and the stream underneath the village could be useful.
Tamara heaved a sigh and leaned back into her seat. These were a lot of hopes and dreams for the village, for the village, but the problem was how to fund it. So far, Cyrrane used up most of the resources it produced, and with how close they had come to starvation, Myriam was very hesitant on trading their excess food production. Though, they may have a thing going on with the gold, silver and other metals that the miners had been bringing back recently.
A knock at the door pulled the young woman from her thoughts. "Tamara, isn't it?" a small head, spotted by freckles and surrounded by a mane of bushy black hair was looking in through the half opened door. Tamara raised a surprised eyebrow. "Yes, that would be me. Come on in." she had recognised Ellie Silverhand, a scout who had arrived today. The dwarf closed the door behind her and joined Tamara at her desk. "Well, I'd gone out to get a snack from the kitchen, and on my way back I saw your light was still on, and since we hadn't talked yet but I'd heard about you from the other villagers, I thought I might pay you a visit. Cherry tart?" Tamara took one of the two slices Ellie was holding out, smiling. "Thanks.'' After taking a bite, Tamara looked at Ellie curiously. "What did you hear about me from the other villagers?"
Ellie took a second to think. "Well, Myriam introduced you as 'Tamara Milner, the person who was going to make the village's wealth- and keep it'. A tall, blonde guy told me you were very stubborn and smart. From a few others, I heard that you were currently in charge of the village's trading and development." Tamara hardly dared looking at Ellie as she heard the comments. Myriam really did believe in her- and Xzavier, despite how annoying he was, did seem to have a high opinion of her. Tamara's heart beat a little faster at the thought. "Well, that last part at least is correct. I'm one of the more experienced here in trading and all that, probably more than anyone else in the village. It's a big responsibility, but I'm happy to help out." Ellie nodded along, listening attentively. "It does sound like a lot for one person. And you're sure there's nobody in the village who can help?" Tamara shook her head. "Not that I've-" she cut off, looking at Ellie suspiciously.
"This is when you say 'But there is someone else who can help! Me!' right?" the dwarf, who had already opened her mouth, froze then laughed. "Fair enough, you saw through my scheme. Yes, I did want to offer my help. You've heard my last name, right?" Tamara nodded. "Yes, Silverhand." understanding was beginning to dawn in her eyes. Ellie nodded. "Precisely. And this would be because I have a certain talent to bring silver into my hands. I've been a traveling trader- and professional bargainer- for most of my life. I've been quite successful, and even now, have a lot of silver left over. I wanted to offer my help for both the bargaining and the funding part of your projects. Because that's often a problem as well, right?" Tamara stayed frozen for half a second as ideas zoomed through her head, then shook herself. "That-that sounds amazing! When do you want to look at things together?" Ellie finished her last bite of cherry tart before answering (and Tamara realised she'd completely forgotten about hers). "Well, not tonight that's for sure, it's getting very late, and I'm supposed to prove I'm a good scout tomorrow- can't do that if I'm half asleep. Maybe tomorrow evening, just after dinner?" Tamara nodded quickly. "Yes, yes of course! See you tomorrow then!" Ellie waved goodbye and left the room, gently shutting the door behind her.
Tamara leaned back in her chair and finished her cherry tart alone, thoughts racing. Myriam believed in her, Xzavier thought she was smart and her projects were getting funding! How on earth was she going to be able to sleep tonight?
