"Has anyone seen Raptorstar this morning?"
Songbirdstar resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Late again for assigning duties, it seemed. Buzzardshade smiled wickedly from a corner, eyes blazing in mischief.
"He's been freaking out about his future kits all morning," the tom responded, his grin growing impossibly wide. "Too scared to admit that he's scared."
Songbirdstar sighed, annoyed that the brothers couldn't just get along for once. How Raptorstar agreed to take on Buzzardshade as their other soldier, she would never know. To keep a closer eye on him, probably. He could slip through the cracks more easily if he didn't hold a leadership position in the clan. "You can take over his duties, then," she told Buzzardshade, turning to hide her smug smile as his grin dissipated, replaced with a look of horror.
"No!" He nearly yowled, overdramatic. "I need to keep watching my brother! Shouldn't someone make sure he's coping well, now that his kits are surely going to be born?"
Now the she-cat truly did roll her eyes, giving Buzzardshade a quick glare. "Leave him alone and do something productive with your time," she snapped. Buzzardshade nodded, sighing dramatically, but he did as he was told. Songbirdstar could see why Raptorstar and Buzzardshade did not get along - their personalities were like night and day. One with a terrible chaotic, mischievous energy, and the other with a loner attitude and bossy nature. But she could also see how they were two sides of the same coin, with their stubbornness and hidden protective nature. She had seen how Raptorstar already cared deeply for his kits, and she knew that he wanted to keep them safe from harm, despite them not being born yet. And she had eavesdropped on Buzzardshade multiple times, telling off the warriors when they were whispering about other cats in a mean way - even defending Raptorstar when one of the newcomers sneered at Raptorstar's blind eye.

Yes, they were brothers, that was certain.

Was it dumb that he had decided to take a mate? Yes. Was it dumb that he wanted to have kits at all? Absolutely. Raptorstar was pacing in the newly made nursery, unsure of what else to do. It had to be perfect. He couldn't let his kits suffer in a cold den. He couldn't let them feel unloved. He had to do something right, both as a leader and as a father and mate.

But it still didn't seem perfect. It would never be perfect.

"I don't think I can help these kits. I can't even lead my own clan! How would I take care of them?"
"Raptorstar..."
He barely heard Petalsong, his pacing continuing, his eyes unfocused. "And Starclan doesn't think I'm fit to lead either, since they made me accept a co-leader-"
"RAPTORSTAR!" Finally, the larger tom stopped pacing long enough to glance at his mate's face, an alarmed look in her eyes. He paused mid step, one of his paws still hanging in the air. "The kits are coming."

”i’m blizzard───that’s my momma, valerian and my sister, sneeze.” the tiny, brave black-and-white kitten blinked up at the emperor, his mother-cat watching them helplessly and the little white she-kit pressed against her mother’s legs.

“they’re deaf?” the maine coon towers over the tiny little kit, but he shows a lot of courage, translating for his parent and littermate to someone stronger and bigger than he is.

“yes. we’ve been traveling for days, and my momma and sister are very tired. all we’d like is a warm place to sleep.”

sitka thought for a moment, studying the trio for a moment before speaking again and turning to his mother, blizzard translating as he spoke. “i’d like you three to join our clan. you can care for your kits with all three of you in the nursery, and when they become pages, you can become a bellatrix.”

relief floods the white she-cat’s expression, who dips her head respectfully. “thank you.” she whispers, and he nods curtly.

“follow me.”

“and who might these three be?” the oldest bellator, but by far the smallest, goldenflower, questions when the four cats slip inside, blinking down, warm and friendly, at the two kits.

sitka turns his head to look at the three, briefly, also warmly, before turning back to the warrior.

“valerianrose, sneezekit, and blizzardkit. the three new members of our clan.”

wolftail paced nervously back and forth outside the nursery. every heartbeat felt like an eternity. finally ridgepelt came out of the nursery.
"come see your kits!" she told him. kits! wolftail thought, i'm a father! he ducked down the tunnel that led to the nursery. down in the den, the gaps in the roof, let in the early mourning sunshine. a large beam fell on his mate, tawnyheart. and there they were. his kits.
"how many are there?" he asked his mate, touching noses with her.
"six."
"six!"
"yes. three toms, three she-kits!"
"what shall we name them?" wolftail wondered out loud. tawnyheart thought for a moment, before saying:
"i'd like to name some of them after birds." she said. "I've always wanted to fly."
"perhaps this one could be larkkit?" he said pointing to one of the she-kits.
"yes i like that name. what about juncokit for the biggest one."
"that is a good one too. are there anymore you want to name after birds?"
"no." wolftail thought about it for a moment.
"what about plants." he suggested.
"yes, that's a great idea. reedkit for him, for sure." she said licking the top of one tom's head. he mewed sleepily.
"i think that last she-kit looks like an ivykit."
"indeed she does." looking at the last two kits, he thought.
"what about sprucekit? after the loner who helped us find mistyclan?"
"yes of course! it's perfect."
" what about the last one?" wolftail asked.
"you name him, anything you want." the father thought for a moment. the kit looked up at him. they locked eyes for a moment and the deputy smiled.
"i think sootkit is a good name for him." he said at last.
"very well then." she said proudly." larkkit, juncokit, reedkit, ivykit, sprucekit and little sootkit!" they both smiled warmly at their kits.

two weeks later...
"come on sootkit! let's go check out the camp!" sprucekit mewed.
"alright! sootkit sprang up and padded towards his brother. looking back to check that his mother and sibling were all still asleep, the two tom-kits crept out of the nursery. when they got to the camp, they looked around. it was huge! glancing around he saw cats everywhere. sniffing around the dens, sootkit suddenly heard someone coming. sprucekit must have heard it too, because they both raced off and hid. the warrior, goldyfur, sootkit thought his name was, walked on. sighing with relief, the tom took in his surroundings for the first time. there were plants stacked up along the walls of the cave.
"the medicine cat den!" sprucekit breathed. " i wonder what this herb does." sootkit's brother said. he scooped up some of the leaves in his paw. he raised it up to his muzzle and sniffed it tentatively.
"sprucekit, don't do it!" sootkit whispered urgently.
"but they smell so good." his brother said and stuffed them in his mouth. sootkit watched horrified as his brother ate the herb. suddenly ridgepelt, the medicine cat, walked in. sprucepelt gagged at the bitter taste of the leaves. the gray and white she-cat dropped the bundle of herbs she was carrying and rushed over picking sprucekit up by the nape of his neck, shaking him. sprucekit. spat out the leaves he didn't swallow.
"what did he eat!" ridgepelt demanded. too shocked to awnswer, sootkit stood there, still as a stone. "WHAT DID HE EAT!" the medicine cat reapeated.
"those leaves." sootkit said, pointing at the stack of herbs his brother had taken from. ridgepelt let out a sigh of relief. "he'll be fine" she said. then she turned to his brother. "you shouldn't have eaten those. now you'll have to eat something worse to get it out of you!" she growled and whipped around, snatching up some more leaves. "it's yarrow. you eat it, and you'll throw up the leaves, understand?" then she set the yarrow in front of sprucekit. he nibbled one cautiously.
"these taste yucky!" he spat.
"well then you'll just have to stop eating my herbs!" ridgepelt growled. sootkit's brother ate the rest of the leaves, looking utterly disgusted, but without complaint. after a few heartbeats, he vomited up the last of the leaves. "good." the medicine cat said." now go back to the nursery. they left and slunk back to their momma, heads hung with shame.
